Microbial biodeterioration of timber and woody material in buildings can cause costly restoration procedures. Here, we focus on Serpula lacrymans (commonly known as dry-rot) the fungus causing the most severe damages to buildings in Europe. Although its morphology, lifestyle, and dispersal have been intensively studied, research on microorganisms sharing the same habitat and interacting with the dry-rot fungus is not as comprehensive. Bacteria have long been known to inhabit dead wood, and several studies have shown their association to fungi. However, their identity, ecology, and putative interactions with co-existing fungi in dead wood remains largely underexplored. The interactions of bacterial and fungi have considerable impact on all partners involved covering the full spectrum between antagonistic and beneficial. Fungi are highly capable of manipulating the microbial community in their surroundings (e.g. via pH manipulation) and bacteria, in turn, can influence fungi by affecting the outcomes of (antagonistic) interactions or preventing fungal feedback inhibition via consumption of breakdown products. Associated bacteria on the other side could play an essential role for the fungus as bacteria can exert significant influence on fungal physiology and behaviour. This minireview summarizes the current knowledge on bacterial-fungal interactions in dead wood with a special focus on dry-rot and proposes possible bacterial-fungal interaction (BFI) mechanisms based on examples from soil or decomposing wood from forests.  相似文献

Survival of cercariae of Transversotrema patialense was enhanced in saline with an ionic concentration equivalent to 25 % sea water whilst infectivity was unchanged up to the maximum salinity tolerance of the fish experimental host (Brachydanio rerio). Adult survival in vitro increased little at ionic concentrations above 12.5% of that of sea water but fell sharply at lower concentrations. Survival in vitro was not enhanced by sterile conditions and only increased slightly with increasing age of worms. Adult parasites became water sensitive within 5 min of infection. However mechanically decaudated cercariae showed no water sensitivity. To survive on freshwater hosts the adult parasite must experience a degree of physiological isolation from its environment despite its apparent ectoparasitic microhabitat.  相似文献

The magnetic circular dichroism spectra (MCD) recorded for the visible and near-UV regions of high-spin ferrous derivatives of myoglobin, hemoglobin, hemoglobin dimers and isolated chains as well as of horseradish peroxidase at pH 6.8 and 11.4 have been compared at the room and liquid nitrogen temperatures. The MCD of the Q 00- and Qv-bands have been shown to be sensitive to structural differences in the heme environment of these hemoproteins. The room temperature visible MCD of native hemoglobin differs from that of myoglobin, hemoglobin dimers and isolated chains as well as from that of model pentacoordinated complex. The MCD of hemoglobin is characterized by the greater value of the MCD intensity ratio of derivative shape A-term in the Q 00-band to the A-term in the Q v-band. The evidences are presented for the existence of two pH-dependent forms of ferroperoxidase, the neutral peroxidase shows the hemoglobin-like MCD, while the alkaline ferroperoxidase is characterized by the myoglobin-like MCD spectrum in the visible region. The differences in the MCD of deoxyhemoglobin and neutral ferroperoxidase as compared with other high-spin ferrous hemoproteins are considered to result from the constraints on heme group imposed by quaternary and/or tertiary protein structure. The differences between hemoproteins which are seen at the room temperature become more pronounced at liquid nitrogen temperature. Except the peak at 580 nm in the MCD of deoxymyoglobin and reduced peroxidase at pH 11.4 the visible MCD does not show appreciable temperature dependent C-terms. The nature of the temperature dependent effect at 580 nm is not clear. The Soret MCD of all hemoproteins studied are similar and are predominantly composed of the derivative-shaped C-terms as revealed by the increase of the MCD peaks approximately in accordance with Boltzmann distribution. The interpretation of temperature-dependent MCD observed for the Soret band has been made in terms of porphyrin to Fe-ion charge-transfer electronic transition which may be assigned as b() 3d. This charge-transfer band is strongly overlapped with usual B( - *) band resulting in diffuse Soret band. Adopting that only two normal vibrations are sinphase with charge-transfer transition the extracted C-terms of the Soret MCD have been fitted by theoretical dispersion curves.  相似文献

This paper presents three propositions. First, the author suggests that there is a growing potential for technologically induced catastophes. Second, our capacity to analyze technological risk is inhibited in part because: (1) we tend to confuse low-probability/low-consequence events with low-probability/high-consequence risks; (2) we seldom adopt a holistic approach to the analysis of risk; and (3) we tend to underestimate the effects of catastrophic events. The author further argues that existing control systems, including federal regulatory bodies, are inadequate. In the conclusion the author discusses difficulties likely to accompany the design and creation of risk control systems.  相似文献

The transient properties of balancing selection in large, but finite, populations are described by means of an asymptotic analysis. Heterotic selection is shown to retard the rate of loss of genetic variation while random environment selection is shown to retard the rate of loss of variation when the initial variant is a rare mutant. Otherwise random environment selection can speed up the loss of variation for certain parametric cases. The asymptotic analysis leads to a particularly simple conceptualization of the selection process which allows the computation of asymptotic forms of the dominant eigenvalue of the process.  相似文献

Summary In order to document the natural CO2 environment of the moss Hylocomium splendens, and ascertain whether or not the moss was adapted to this, and its interactions with other microenvironmental factors, two studies were carried out. Firstly, the seasonal variations of CO2 concentration, photosynthetically active radiation (PAR), tissue water content and temperature were measured in the natural microenvironment of H. splendens in a subarctic forest during the summer period (July–September). Secondly, the photosynthetic responses of the species to controlled CO2 concentrations, PAR, temperature, and hydration were measured in the laboratory. CO2 concentrations around the upper parts of the plant, when PAR was above the compensation point (30 mol m–2 s–1), were mostly between 400 and 450 ppm. They occasionally increased up to 1143 ppm for short periods. PAR flux densities below saturating light levels for photosynthesis (100 mol m–2 s–1), occurred during 65% (July), 76% (August) and 96% (September) of the hours of the summer period. The temperature optimum of photosynthesis was 20° C: this temperature coincided with PAR above the compensation point during 5%, 6% and 0% of the time in July, August and September, respectively. Optimal hydration of tissues was infrequent. Hence PAR, temperature and water limit CO2 uptake for most of the growing season. Our data suggest that the higher than normal ambient CO2 concentration in the immediate environment of the plant counteracts some of the limitations in PAR supply that it experiences in its habitat. This species already experiences concentrations of atmospheric CO2 predicted to occur over the next 50 years.  相似文献

Summary Under semi-arid conditions, three field experiments were conducted at Gezira Research Station to determine response of irrigated dry-seeded rice (Oryza sativa L. var IR 2053-206-1-3-6) to addition of nitrogen and phosphorus fertilizers. The experimental treatments included the factorial combinations of seven levels of nitrogen applied as urea and four levels of phosphorus applied as super phosphate. Plant growth and grain yield were significantly and progressively increased with the rise in the levels of added nitrogen and phosphorus. However, response to added phosphorus was restricted by the applied level of nitrogen. The responses of grain yield to nitrogen and phosphorus levels are given by quadratic regression equations. Without addition of nitrogen or phosphorus grain yield averaged 1.52 t/ha compared to 6.07 t/ha with addition of the optimal levels (160 kg N plus 35 kg P/ha). The high potential for rice production in semi-arid environment is evidently restricted by addition of relatively high rates of nitrogen and phosphorus.  相似文献

Different intrauterine exposures are associated with different metabolic profiles leading to growth and development characteristics in children and also relate to health and disease patterns in adult life. The objective of this work was to evaluate the impact of four different intrauterine environments on the telomere length of newborns. This is a longitudinal observational study using a convenience sample of 222 mothers and their term newborns (>37 weeks of gestational age) from hospitals in Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul (Brazil), from September 2011 to January 2016. Sample was divided into four groups: pregnant women with Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (DM) (n=38), smoking pregnant women (TOBACCO) (n=52), mothers with small-for-gestational age (SGA) children due to idiopathic intrauterine growth restriction (n=33), and a control group (n=99). Maternal and newborn genomic DNA were obtained from epithelial mucosal cells. Telomere length was assessed by qPCR, with the calculation of the telomere and single copy gene (T/S ratio). In this sample, there was no significant difference in telomere length between groups (p>0.05). There was also no association between childbirth weight and telomere length in children (p>0.05). For term newborns different intrauterine environments seems not to influence telomere length at birth.  相似文献
