Immunocytochemical identification of proctolinlike immunoreactivity in the terminal ganglion and hindgut of the cockroach Periplaneta americana (L.)

Summary In the American cockroach, the distribution and connections of neuronal elements of the terminal ganglion-proctodeal nerve-hindgut system were investigated by means of immunohistochemical methods and axonal CoCl₂ iontophoresis. Proctolinlike immunoreactivity was localized within neurons of the terminal ganglion projecting into the proctodeal nerve on the one hand, and in nerve cells without a direct connection to this system on the other. Immunohistochemically, in whole mount preparations fibres of the proctodeal nerve and terminal structures in the hindgut musculature exhibit strong proctolinlike immunoreactivity. At the light- and electron-microscopic levels the pathways of about 30 somata of the proctodeal neural system were characterized by cobalt chloride iontophoresis. The relationships of cobalt filled and immunoreactive neuronal structures are discussed.For the preparation of tritiated proctolin we thank Dr. S. Early events in calcium-induced liposome fusion

Calcium-induced interaction of liposomes composed of pure phosphatidylserine (PS) has been studied using a rapid-mixing, rapid-freeze device. Freeze-fracture electron microscopy of this material revealed that liposomes react very rapidly after addition of calcium ions. After only 10 ms (the resolution of the technique) vesicle fusion was apparent. At the same time, however, vesicles also collapsed, and appeared as aggregates of flattened membranes. This may explain controversies which have arisen over vesicle fusion studied with more indirect methods.     

甲肝病毒在人血白细胞中体外连续传代和在分类白细胞中增殖的研究

1985年我们采用间接免疫荧光法(IF法)检测出甲肝患者外周血白细胞中有甲肝抗原(HAAg)存在,继而又将HAAg阳性白细胞直接种入PLC/PRF/5细胞,分离到两株甲肝病毒(HAV)NJ—3株和H—1株。为了弄清白细胞所携带的病毒究竟仅为吸附吞饮,抑或能在其中复制增殖,我们将分离到的HAV用正常人血白细胞进行体外增殖试验,现将结果报告如下。     

Ovarian development, spawning frequency and batch fecundity in Encrasicholina heteroloba (Ruppell, 1858)

A histological and gravimetric analysis of oocyte development in Encrasicholina heteroloba (Ruppell, 1858) indicated that this species spawns serially and has a group-synchronous mode of ovarian development. A six stage maturity scale, based on both external morphology and oocyte composition, was proposed to classify ovarian development in E. heteroloba . The incidence of females with hydrated oocytes and post-ovulatory follicles in samples from two regions; the south Java Sea and Roviana lagoon, in the Solomon Islands were used to estimate spawning frequency. Estimates of mean inter-spawning intervals ranged from around 2 days in fish from Roviana lagoon to up to 16.7 days in fish from the south Java Sea. Batch fecundity was determined from the number of oocytes in the largest oocyte size class in ripe stage ovaries. Batch fecundity was related to size and was significantly greater for a given size in the Roviana lagoon population ( F = 0.081 × L ^4.89, Roviana population; F = 1.682 × L ^2.83, Jepara population).     

Erythropoietic progenitor cells from premature neonates studied using a validated serum-deprived medium

We have examined a serum-deprived culture system in order to verify that it is suitable for the study of burst forming unit erythroid (BFU-E) progenitor cells from premature neonates. Optimum growth of BFU-E from premature neonates was observed with each media constituent using the same concentration as that previously described for adult subjects. Growth of immature BFU-E from premature neonates were highly dependant upon a source of Burst Promoting Activity and mature BFU-E derived colonies emerged at day 12 compared to day 14 in adults. Out-Patient Peritoneal Lavage Cytology In the Detection of Residual Epithelial Ovarian Cancer

Peritoneal lavage fluid cytology was performed in 87 out-patients with histologically proven epithelial ovarian cancer undergoing primary management. A total of 246 peritoneal lavages were attempted, usually with temporary cannulae (n = 229). From these, 184 samples were obtained, of which 156 (85%) were suitable for cytological analysis. The sensitivity of peritoneal lavage fluid cytology in 67 patients with known residual disease was 57% whereas serum CA 125 levels were elevated in 58 (87%). Pre- and post-treatment peritoneal lavage fluid cytology had prognostic value, but this was less than that of serum CA 125 measurements.
