The control efficiency and performance ofEncarsia formosa Gahan (Hymenoptera: Aphelinidae) as influenced by the density of its host, the Poinsettia-strain ofBemisia tabaci Gennadius (Homoptera: Aleyrodidae), were investigated by laboratory experiments on Poinsettia (Euphorbia pulcherrrima Willd.).E. formosa showed a Type II functional response to fourth instar larvae ofB. tabaci, the response plateau increasing with temperature. A response model for randomly searching parasitoids incorporating temperature-dependent handling time and temperature-independent search rate was in accordance with the results, and gave an estimated search rate of 0.033 leaf·hour−1 and handling times of 1.54, 2.86 and 20.1 h at 28°C, 22°C and 16°C, respectively. From the latter, the maximum number of hosts that can be parasitized at the three temperatures are 10.4, 5.6 and 0.8 larvae per day (provided the light period is 16 h). The number of hosts with ovipositor punctures was higher than the number of parasitized hosts, especially at 22°C and 28°C, implying thatE. formosa refrains from laying eggs in some of the hosts examined with the ovipositor. About 31% of the punctured larvae did not contain any eggs. Superparasitism occured during the experiment presumably originating from young, inexperienced parasitoids. Individual larvae were occasionally punctured several times, also by non-superparasitizingE. formosa. The resulting distribution of ovipositior holes was random, indicating thatE. formosa on the basis of antennal testing is unable to determine if a larva has previously been examined with the ovipositor. Almost fifty percent of the punctures were not followed by egg-depositions. Besides parasitizationE. formosa used hosts as food source. The number of hostfed larvae was independent of density, but varied with temperature being highest at 28°C (0.12 hostfed larvae per parasitoid per day).  相似文献

The headgroup conformation of the phospholipid dipalmitoyl-glycero-phosphocholine (DPPC) in monolayers at the air/water interface has been studied by neutron reflection in the fluid like liquid-expanded (LE) and in the crystal like solid (S) phase. Information on the headgroup conformation in the two phases has been obtained by scattering contrast variation of the lipid monolayer using four differently deuterated species of DPPC: perdeuterated, chain perdeuterated, choline group perdeuterated and selectively headgroup deuterated. Since the measurements were done mainly on a subphase of null reflecting water (i.e. water scattering contrast matched to the air) there is no subphase contribution to reflectivity and the simplest one layer model can be employed for the data analysis, thus minimising the number of free parameters. A remarkable change of the headgroup orientation was observed between the LE and the S phase. We found that the phosphate-nitrogen dipole of the DPPC headgroup exhibits an in-plane orientation with respect to the monolayer in the LE phase but it assumes a more parallel orientation to the surface normal at lateral pressures above 30 mN/m (S phase). Geographic variation in birdsong and differential responses of territorial males to local and non‐local song variants have been documented in a number of songbird species in which males learn their songs through imitation. Here, we investigated geographic song variation and responses to local and non‐local song in the grasshopper sparrow (Ammodramus savannarum), a species in which males develop song by improvisation rather than imitation, as a first step toward understanding how the extent and salience of geographic song variation is related to the mode of song development. To describe the geographic variation in song, we compared songs from populations in eastern Maryland and central Ohio, USA, using multiple acoustic analysis techniques. We then conducted a playback experiment in Maryland using local and non‐local (Ohio) songs to test how territorial males responded to this geographic variation. We found acoustic differences between songs from the two sites. However, males responded similarly to playback of these songs, suggesting that this geographic variation is not behaviorally salient in a territorial context. Together with previous studies, our results suggest that across species, geographic song variation and the extent to which this variation functions in communication may be correlated with the accuracy with which song models are imitated during song development.  相似文献

Correct orientation of the mitotic spindle determines the plane of cellular cleavage and is crucial for organ development. In the developing cerebral cortex, spindle orientation defects result in severe neurodevelopmental disorders, but the precise mechanisms that control this important event are not fully understood. Here, we use a combination of high‐content screening and mouse genetics to identify the miR‐34/449 family as key regulators of mitotic spindle orientation in the developing cerebral cortex. By screening through all cortically expressed miRNAs in HeLa cells, we show that several members of the miR‐34/449 family control mitotic duration and spindle rotation. Analysis of miR‐34/449 knockout (KO) mouse embryos demonstrates significant spindle misorientation phenotypes in cortical progenitors, resulting in an excess of radial glia cells at the expense of intermediate progenitors and a significant delay in neurogenesis. We identify the junction adhesion molecule‐A (JAM‐A) as a key target for miR‐34/449 in the developing cortex that might be responsible for those defects. Our data indicate that miRNA‐dependent regulation of mitotic spindle orientation is crucial for cell fate specification during mammalian neurogenesis.  相似文献

The interpretation of the function of the ammonoid phragmocone as a buoyancy device is now widely accepted among ammonoid researchers. During the 20th century, several theoretical models were proposed for the role of the chambered shell (phragmocone); accordingly, the phragmocone had hydrostatic properties, which enabled it to attain neutral buoyancy, presuming it was partially filled with gas. With new three‐dimensional reconstructions of ammonoid shells, we are now able to test these hypothetical models using empirical volume data of actual ammonoid shells. We investigated three Palaeozoic ammonoids (Devonian and Carboniferous), namely Fidelites clariondi, Diallagites lenticulifer and Goniatites multiliratus, to reconstruct their hydrostatic properties, their syn vivo shell orientation and their buoyancy. According to our models, measurements and calculations, these specimens had aperture orientations of 19°, 64° and 125° during their lives. Although none of our results coincide with the aperture orientation of the living Nautilus, they do verify the predictions for shell orientations based on published theoretical models. Our calculations also show that the shorter the body chamber, the poorer was the hydrodynamic stability of the animal. This finding corroborates the results of theoretical models from the 1990s. With these results, which are based on actual specimens, we favour the rejection of hypotheses suggesting a purely benthonic mode of life of ammonoids. Additionally, it is now possible to assess hydrodynamic properties of the shells through ontogeny and phylogeny, leading to insights to validate theoretical modes of life and habitat through the animal's life.  相似文献

Acquisition of mineral nitrogen by roots from the surrounding environment is often not completely efficient, in which a variable amount of leakage (efflux) relative to gross uptake (influx) occurs. The efflux/influx ratio (E/I) is, therefore, inversely related to the efficiency of nutrient uptake at the root level. Time‐integrated estimates of E/I and other nitrogen‐use traits may be obtainable from variation in stable isotope ratios or through compartmental analysis of tracer efflux (CATE) using radioactive or stable isotopes. To compare these two methods, Populus balsamifera L. genotypes were selected, a priori, for high or low nitrogen isotope discrimination. Vegetative cuttings were grown hydroponically, and E/I was calculated using an isotope mass balance model (IMB) and compared to E/I calculated using 15N CATE. Both methods indicated that plants grown with ammonium had greater E/I than nitrate‐grown plants. Genotypes with high or low E/I using CATE also had similarly high or low estimates of E/I using IMB, respectively. Genotype‐specific means were linearly correlated (r = 0.77; P = 0.0065). Discrepancies in E/I between methods may reflect uncertainties in discrimination factors for the assimilatory enzymes, or temporal differences in uptake patterns. By utilizing genotypes with known variation in nitrogen isotope discrimination, a relationship between nitrogen isotope discrimination and bidirectional nitrogen fluxes at the root level was observed.  相似文献

I use data from the 2011 Pew Survey (N?=?1,033) to examine the prevalence and correlates of perceived discrimination across Muslim American racial/ethnic groups. Asian Muslims report the lowest frequency of perceived discrimination than other Muslim racial/ethnic groups. Nearly, all Muslim racial/ethnic groups have a few times higher odds of reporting one or more types of perceived discrimination than white Muslims. After controlling for socio-demographic characteristics, the observed relationships persist for Hispanic Muslims but disappear for black and other/mixed race Muslims. Women are less likely than men to report several forms of discrimination. Older Muslims report lower rates of perceived discrimination than younger Muslims. White Muslim men are more likely to report experiencing discrimination than white, black and Asian Muslim women. The findings highlight varying degrees of perceived discrimination among Muslim American racial/ethnic groups and suggest examining negative implications for Muslims who are at the greatest risk of mistreatment.  相似文献
