Limited information is available regarding the development of systemic organ stress by dermal exposure to JP-8 fuel. In this study, the systemic stress potential of this fuel is evaluated in a rat model subjected to dermal applications of JP-8 for 7 days at 300 μl per day. Tissue histology indicated that JP-8 induces morphological alterations that suggest that tissue stress in the heart is more substantial than stress in the kidney and liver. Immunoblot analysis of tissues revealed increased levels of the inducible heat shock protein 70 (HSP70) in the heart, kidney, and liver after this dermal JP-8 exposure. This exposure also leads to increased levels of heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1/HSP3) in the liver. Additionally during this exposure, a negative regulator of inflammation, IκBα (inhibitor of NF-κB), was increased in the liver, slightly increased in the kidney, and not increased in the heart. Two regions of the rat brain were also examined and HSP70 and IκBα were increased in the cerebellum but not significantly increased in the cortex. This study indicates dermal JP-8 exposure causes systemic alterations that are associated with cytoprotective activities (e.g., in the liver) as well as potentially toxic mechanisms (heart and kidney).  相似文献

The importance of allometry as an analytic tool is well recognized in the literature of primate morphology. However, a number of recent studies have illustrated how interpretive difficulties can arise when researchers confound different types of allometric data. Such confusion is due less to carelessness than to uncertainty about how different types of allometry are related. The present study examines the relationship between two types—ontogenetic and interspecific allometry–in the case of organ weight scaling in six species of Old World monkeys. Accepting the interpretation of interspecific allometry as a reflection of functional scaling constraints, the results of this analysis indicate how ontogenetic patterns have been modified in different-sized species to maintain compliance with these constraints. Specifically, for the heart and lungs it appears that vertical transpositions of individual species' ontogenies are dictated by isometric interspecific allometry, while in the case of the kidneys and liver, the relation of negative allometry across species entails alteration of the relative growth coefficients of the individual species. While these conclusions can at present only be applied to organ weight scaling, the approach of examining interspecific patterns in light of developmental differences between species should prove very helpful in our efforts to understand the phenomena of size and scaling.  相似文献

  • Research rationale: Evolution of fused petals (sympetaly) is considered to be an important innovation that has repeatedly led to increased pollination efficiency, resulting in accelerated rates of plant diversification. Although little is known about the underlying regulation of sympetaly, genetic pathways ancestrally involved in organ boundary establishment (e.g. CUP SHAPED COTYLEDON [CUC] 1–3 genes) are strong candidates. In sympetalous petunia, mutations in the CUC1/2‐like orthologue NO APICAL MERISTEM (NAM) inhibit shoot apical meristem formation. Despite this, occasional ‘escape shoots’ develop flowers with extra petals and fused inter‐floral whorl organs.
  • Central methods: To To determine if petunia CUC‐like genes regulate additional floral patterning, we used virus‐induced silencing (VIGS) following establishment of healthy shoot apices to re‐examine the role of NAM in petunia petal development, and uniquely characterise the CUC3 orthologue NH16.
  • Key results: Confirming previous results, we found that reduced floral NAM/NH16 expression caused increased petal–stamen and stamen–carpel fusion, and often produced extra petals. However, further to previous results, all VIGS plants infected with NAM or NH16 constructs exhibited reduced fusion in the petal whorl compared to control plants.
  • Main conclusions: Together with previous data, our results demonstrate conservation of petunia CUC‐like genes in establishing inter‐floral whorl organ boundaries, as well as functional evolution to affect the fusion of petunia petals.

以洋葱JQS-1、MST-140、Red beauty 3个常规栽培品种的鳞茎为试材,观察统计洋葱花器数目的变化,探讨花器数目的变异与植物花器多样性的关系,为植物花器发育模式以及植物分类和系统发育研究提供依据。结果表明:(1)洋葱花序中正常的洋葱小花含有6枚雄蕊,一些异常小花雄蕊的数目减少到5枚或增加到7~11枚;正常花药中的花粉粒数量大、形状规则、分散均匀,而异常花药中的花粉粒形状不规则。(2)雌蕊数目也发生变异,子房由正常的3室,变成了2室、4室或6室;花柱从正常1枚,增加到2枚或3枚。(3)正常小花含有6片花被片,异常小花的花被片数目从5片到10片。(4)花被片与雄蕊数目的变异有同步增减和非同步增加2种类型。  相似文献

Length measurements of sperms of 51 species of Cypridoidea ostracods were taken to supplement the paucity of ostracod sperm data in the published literature. The lengths of the posterior regions (carrying the mitochondria) and the thinner anterior regions were also measured when appropriate. Maximum lengths of sperms for individual species varied from 268 μm for Fabaeformiscandona velifera Smith and Janz, 2008 through to 11 787 μm for Australocypris robusta De Deckker, 1974; these lengths represent the shortest so far recorded for the superfamily and the longest ever recorded in ostracods, respectively. There appears to be only a loose relationship between taxonomy and sperm lengths. Species of the subfamily Candoninae generally have the shortest sperms compared with other subfamilies, but one Candoninae species, Candona altoides Petkovski, 1961, has sperms longer than some species of the families Cyprididae, Ilyocyprididae and Notodromadidae. The family Cyprididae showed the most variation, with sperms ranging from 1000 μm through to 11 787 μm in length. No hypothesis satisfactorily explains the origin of giant sperms in ostracods or the longevity of this trait through geological eras, and their existence remains enigmatic.  相似文献

Lepidopteran spermatogenesis is dichotomous, producing eupyrene (nucleated) and apyrene (anucleated) spermatozoa. The eupyrene precedes the apyrene spermatogenesis. The timing of the switchover from eupyrene to apyrene spermatogenesis was determined by cultivating testes of accurately aged codling moth larvae in a medium containing mammalian serum but neither hemolymph nor insect hormones. In cultures, eupyrene spermatogenesis occurred in testes dissected from either 4th or 5th instar larvae, probably due to macromolecular factor-like activity of the serum of the medium. But apyrene spermatogenesis occurred only in testes explanted during or after the fourth day of the 5th instar larva. It is concluded that: (1) An apyrene spermatogenesis inducing factor (ASIF) becomes active on the fourth day of the 5th instar larva in addition to the already existing macromolecular factor. (2) Primary spermatocytes can develop into either eupyrene or apyrene spermatozoa. (3) The apyrene spermatogenesis commitment and pupal commitment of other tissues coincide about the fourth day of the 5th instar larva.  相似文献

A vertebrate eye was induced via a series of coordinated inductive interactions. Here, we describe a novel in vitro system to induce eye formation at high frequency using Xenopus early gastrulae. The eye formed in vitro is morphologically similar to the normal eye. When the in vitro eye was transplanted into a stage-33 tadpole, the optic nerve was seen extending from the grafted eye to the tectum of the host brain and the in vitro eye graft was retained after metamorphosis. In addition, we transplanted the eye formed in vitro into a tadpole with both eyes removed. The resultant juvenile frogs could perceive brightness using the grafted eye and thereby control their skin color, suggesting that the eye formed in vitro could function normally.  相似文献

从水稻 (OryzasativaL .)育种后代材料中获得一个受单隐性基因控制的颖花器官突变体。该突变体的内外稃变型、退化 ;雄蕊雌蕊化 ,每个颖花含 1~ 3个发育完整的雌蕊 ,其他雌蕊发育不完全。有的雌蕊化的雄蕊下部为花丝 ,其上着生不规则膨大组织和 0~ 3个羽毛状柱头。横切面和纵切面观察均可见每个颖花含 3个子房。人工辅助授粉后 ,每个颖花可产生 1~ 2粒种子。根据这些结果推断 ,该突变体为类似B功能缺失的突变体。  相似文献
