The phenotype of a mother and the environment that she provides might differentially affect the phenotypes of her sons and daughters, leading to change in sexual size dimorphism. Whereas these maternal effects should evolve to accommodate the adaptations of both the maternal and offspring generations, the mechanisms by which this is accomplished are rarely known. In birds, females adjust the onset of incubation (coincident with the first egg or after all eggs are laid) in response to the environment during breeding, and thus, indirectly, determine the duration of offspring growth. In the two house finch (Carpodacus mexicanus) populations that breed at the extremes of the species' distribution (Montana and Alabama), females experience highly distinct climatic conditions during nesting. We show that in close association with these conditions, females adjusted jointly the onset of incubation and the sequence in which they produced male and female eggs and consequently modified the growth of sons and daughters. The onset of incubation in newly breeding females closely tracked ambient temperature in a pattern consistent with the maintenance of egg viability. Because of the very different climates in Montana and Alabama, females in these populations showed the opposite patterns of seasonal change in incubation onset and the opposite sex bias in egg-laying order. In females with breeding experience, incubation onset and sex bias in laying order were closely linked regardless of the climatic variation. In nests in which incubation began with the onset of egg laying, the first-laid eggs were mostly females in Montana, but mostly males in Alabama. Because in both populations, male, but not female, embryos grew faster when exposed to longer incubation, the sex-bias produced highly divergent sizes of male and female juveniles between the populations. Overall, the compensatory interaction between the onset of incubation and the sex-biased laying order achieved a compromise between maternal and offspring adaptations and contributed to rapid morphological divergence in sexual dimorphism between populations of the house finch breeding at the climatic extremes of the species range.  相似文献

在室内研究了温度对双纹须歧角螟Trichophysetis cretacea (Butler)生长发育及繁殖的影响。结果表明,在19~31℃范围内,双纹歧角螟的发育速率随着温度的升高而加快;当温度超过31℃时,发育速率减慢。在各虫态中,蛹期的存活受温度变化的影响最大,35℃时蛹全部死亡。19℃、23℃、27℃、31℃和35℃下的世代存活率分别为87.1%、83.0%、85.2%、70.1%和0%。卵、幼虫、预蛹、蛹及从卵至成虫的发育起点温度分别为9.08℃、8.95℃、7.80℃、9.09℃和8.86℃,有效积温分别为62.4、122.0、16.0、108.1和309.1日·度。成虫的寿命随温度的升高而缩短,27℃时成虫的产卵量最高,平均为91.3粒。19℃、23℃、27℃和31℃条件下,实验种群的净生殖率分别为31.0、41.8、46.7、0.8,内禀增长率分别为0.0813、0.1439、0.1710、-0.0094,平均世代周期分别为42.2、26.3、23.1和19.2天。  相似文献

Coupled climate–ecosystem models predict significant alteration of temperate forest biome distribution in response to climate warming. Temperate forest biomes contain approximately 10% of global soil carbon (C) stocks and therefore any change in their distribution may have significant impacts on terrestrial C budgets. Using the Sierra Nevada as a model system for temperate forest soils, we examined the effects of temperature and soil mineralogy on soil C mineralization. We incubated soils from three conifer biomes dominated by ponderosa pine (PP), white fir (WF), and red fir (RF) tree species, on granite (GR), basalt (BS), and andesite (AN) parent materials, at three temperatures (12.5°C, 7.5°C, 5.0°C). AN soils were dominated by noncrystalline materials (allophane, Al‐humus complexes), GR soils by crystalline minerals (kaolinite, vermiculite), and BS soils by a mix of crystalline and noncrystalline materials. Soil C mineralization (ranging from 1.9 to 34.6 [mg C (g soil C)?1] or 0.1 to 2.3 [mg C (g soil)?1]) differed significantly between parent materials in all biomes with a general pattern of ANδ13C values of respired CO2 suggest greater decomposition of recalcitrant soil C compounds with increasing temperature, indicating a shift in primary C source utilization with temperature. Our results demonstrate that soil mineralogy moderates soil C mineralization and that soil C response to temperature includes shifts in decomposition rates, mineralizable pool size, and primary C source utilization.  相似文献

Genetic diversity and structure of populations of the wild progenitor of barleyHordeum spontaneum in Iran was studied by electrophoretically discernible allozymic variation in proteins encoded by 30 gene loci in 509 individuals representing 13 populations of wild barley. The results indicate that: a)Hordeum spontaneum in Iran is extremely rich genetically but, because of predominant self-pollination, the variation is carried primarily by different homozygotes in the population. Thus, genetic indices of polymorphismP-1% = 0.375, range = 0.267–0.500, and of genetic diversity,He = 0.134, range = 0.069–0.198, are very high. b) Genetic differentiation of populations includes clinal, regional and local patterns, sometimes displaying sharp geographic differentiation over short distances. The average relative differentiation among populations isGst = 0.28, range = 0.02–0.61. c) A substantial portion of the patterns of allozyme variation in the wild gene pool is significanctly correlated with the environment and is predictable ecologically, chiefly by combinations of temperature and humidity variables. d) The natural populations studied, on the average, are more variable than two composite crosses, and more variable than indigenous land races of cultivated barely,Hordeum vulgare, in Iran. — The spatial patterns and environmental correlates and predictors of genetic variation ofH. spontaneum in Iran indicate that genetic variation in wild barley populations is not only rich but also at least partly adaptive. Therefore, a much fuller exploitation of these genetic resources by breeding for disease resistance and economically important agronomic traits is warranted.  相似文献

A(2A) adenosine receptors are considered an excellent target for drug development in several neurological and psychiatric disorders. It is noteworthy that the responses evoked by A(2A) adenosine receptors are regulated by D(2) dopamine receptor ligands. These two receptors are co-expressed at the level of the basal ganglia and interact to form functional heterodimers. In this context, possible changes in A(2A) adenosine receptor functional responses caused by the chronic blockade/activation of D(2) dopamine receptors should be considered to optimise the therapeutic effectiveness of dopaminergic agents and to reduce any possible side effects. In the present paper, we investigated the regulation of A(2A) adenosine receptors induced by antipsychotic drugs, commonly acting as D(2) dopamine receptor antagonists, in a cellular model co-expressing both A(2A) and D(2) receptors. Our data suggest that the treatment of cells with the classical antipsychotic haloperidol increased both the affinity and responsiveness of the A(2A) receptor and also affected the degree of A(2A)-D(2) receptor heterodimerisation. In contrast, an atypical antipsychotic, clozapine, had no effect on A(2A) adenosine receptor parameters, suggesting that the two classes of drugs have different effects on adenosine-dopamine receptor interaction. Modifications to A(2A) adenosine receptors may play a significant role in determining cerebral adenosine effects during the chronic administration of antipsychotics in psychiatric diseases and may account for the efficacy of A(2A) adenosine receptor ligands in pathologies associated with dopaminergic system dysfunction. The simulation of the dynamics of a cellular systems based on cellular automata (CA) can be computationally expensive. This is particularly true when such simulation is part of a procedure of rule induction to find suitable transition rules for the CA. Several efforts have been described in the literature to make this problem more treatable. This work presents a study about the efficiency of dynamic behavior forecasting parameters (DBFPs) used for the induction of transition rules of CA for a specific problem: the classification by the majority rule. A total of 8 DBFPs were analyzed for the 31 best-performing rules found in the literature. Some of these DBFPs were highly correlated each other, meaning they yield the same information. Also, most rules presented values of the DBFPs very close each other. An evolutionary algorithm, based on gene expression programming, was developed for finding transition rules according a given preestablished behavior. The simulation of the dynamic behavior of the CA is not used to evaluate candidate transition rules. Instead, the average values for the DBFPs were used as reference. Experiments were done using the DBFPs separately and together. In both cases, the best induced transition rules were not acceptable solutions for the desired behavior of the CA. We conclude that, although the DBFPs represent interesting aspects of the dynamic behavior of CAs, the transition rule induction process still requires the simulation of the dynamics and cannot rely only on the DBFPs.  相似文献

用适量BrdU处理中华大蟾蜍外周血淋巴细胞,能以较高频率得到形态多样的染色质(体)结构。本文以两栖类和人类细胞为材料,采用Feulgen染色、Ag-NOR染色、DAPI荧光染色及放射自显影等方法,证实了其染色质性质,初步讨论了其产生原因,并将其命名为:“G,期后期染色质”。在此基础上,进一步从形态学角度初步分析了从G_2期后期到M期染色质转变为染色体的动态过程,提出不同染色体形成其高级结构是非同步的,有可能存在染色体包裹顺序的设想。  相似文献

ABSTRACT

In Portugal, the European clam (Ruditapes decussatus) is an important commercial resource. Óbidos Lagoon is a strong candidate as a cultivation area to increase European clam exploitation. However, the reproductive biology of this population has not been described. In this work, the reproductive cycle of R. decussatus was characterized by determining gonadal development stages, gonad index, condition index, and biochemical composition. The relationship between reproduction and environmental parameters (sea surface temperature, chlorophyll a, and particulate organic matter) was assessed. Ruditapes decussatus had an annual reproductive cycle. The gametogenic cycle started in late winter, and the ripe stage in spring was followed by spawning that began at the end of spring/early summer and extended until early autumn. The subsequent period of sexual rest occurred during the winter. Condition index showed seasonal variations related to food availability (chlorophyll a). The European clams in Óbidos Lagoon recovered rapidly after their reproductive period, most likely owing to the availability of food. This study will help to improve sustainable management of this wild stock and is important for future aquaculture development of this species.  相似文献

EF-hand Ca2+-binding proteins (CBPs), such as S100 proteins (S100s) and calmodulin (CaM), are signaling proteins that undergo conformational changes upon increasing intracellular Ca2+. Upon binding Ca2+, S100 proteins and CaM interact with protein targets and induce important biological responses. The Ca2+-binding affinity of CaM and most S100s in the absence of target is weak (CaKD > 1 μM). However, upon effector protein binding, the Ca2+ affinity of these proteins increases via heterotropic allostery (CaKD < 1 μM). Because of the high number and micromolar concentrations of EF-hand CBPs in a cell, at any given time, allostery is required physiologically, allowing for (i) proper Ca2+ homeostasis and (ii) strict maintenance of Ca2+-signaling within a narrow dynamic range of free Ca2+ ion concentrations, [Ca2+]free. In this review, mechanisms of allostery are coalesced into an empirical “binding and functional folding (BFF)” physiological framework. At the molecular level, folding (F), binding and folding (BF), and BFF events include all atoms in the biomolecular complex under study. The BFF framework is introduced with two straightforward BFF types for proteins (type 1, concerted; type 2, stepwise) and considers how homologous and nonhomologous amino acid residues of CBPs and their effector protein(s) evolved to provide allosteric tightening of Ca2+ and simultaneously determine how specific and relatively promiscuous CBP-target complexes form as both are needed for proper cellular function.  相似文献

Terbium(III)-doped yttrium aluminate perovskite (YAP:xTb3+) (x = 0.01–0.08 mol) was synthesized using a simple gel-combustion method. Structural elucidations were performed using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Rietveld analysis. Fourier-transform infrared spectral studies validated the efficient synthesis of designed doped samples. Transmission electron microscopic images showed the agglomerated irregular dimensions of the synthesized nanocrystalline materials. When excited at 251 nm, a strong emissive line attributed to 5D47F5 electronic transition was observed at 545 nm (green emission). The maximum luminescence was found at the optimized concentration (0.05 mol) of Tb3+ ions; this emission was quenched by dipolar–dipolar (d–d) interactions. Chromaticity (x and y) and correlated colour temperature parameters were obtained by analysing the emission profiles. Finally, the colour coordinates of nanophosphors were closer to the National Television Standards Committee green coordinates, which replicates their potency in the design and architecture of R-G-B-based white LEDs.  相似文献
