Summary Ontogenetic patterns of volatile compounds identified in Dufour's gland extracts from queens and workers of the primitively eusocial sweat beeLasioglossum malachurum (K.) were compared. Only young unmated queens showed high proportions of isopentenyl esters, while macrocyclic lactones were dominant in old breeding queens, spring queens, and workers. In young queens the relative and absolute amounts of volatiles changed one day after mating. A discriminant analysis revealed significant differences in odor patterns of unmated and mated young queens. The fat body was the largest in young females, while eggs could be recorded only in breeding queens. Possible functions of different odor components in the investigated female groups are discussed.  相似文献

We investigated the influence of variation in body size and growth rate on age of smolting in Atlantic salmon and brown trout in four different Norwegian rivers. In Atlantic salmon smolt ages varied between 2 and 6 years, and in brown trout between 2 and 7 years. Smolt age was negatively correlated with parr growth, and positively correlated with smolt size. Age at smolting was more variable in the two northern than the two southern rivers. Smolt sizes and ages were also more variable in brown trout than in Atlantic salmon. Based on the observed variation in smolt size and age, we reject the hypothesis that a threshold size alone regulates age at smolting. Within populations smolt age depends on growth rate so that fast-growing parr smolted younger and smaller than slow-growing parr. We hypothesize that smolt size and age is a trade-off between expected benefits and costs imposed by differences in individual growth rate.  相似文献

We investigated the winter feeding ecology of cod ( Gadus morhua ) in the Risørfjord and Flødevigen areas on the Skagerrak coast, southern Norway. Diets from the ice-covered Risørfjord were compared with diets from the more coastal Flødevigen area. In the Risørfjord area the diet featured numerically both decapods (56.0%) and fish (27.8%), but fish dominated by mass (75.1%). The most numerous dietary items from the Flødevigen area were decapods (48.1%) and isopods (30.6%), although fish still made up the bulk of the diet's mass (52.6%). Diets at Flødevigen shifted from winter to spring, as polychaetes became important numerically (67.8%) and also contributed substantially by weight (53.6%). Since cod feed opportunistically, differences between areas and seasons probably reflected differences in prey diversity and abundance. Prey size variability increased with increasing predator length, but maximum prey size relative to predator length was constant at about 9%. Prey fish increased in both length and numbers with the length of cod, particularly in the Risørfjord area, where fish were more important in the diet than at Flødevigen. However, the majority of fish consumed in both areas were small gobiids. Based on growth patterns observed in otoliths, with opaque zones (indicating faster growth) formed during winter, the quality and quantity of the winter diet may determine annual growth rates of cod on the Skagerrak coast. Fish and decapods constituted important, high energy food sources, and there was little indication that cod were food limited during winter in this area.  相似文献

Recent progress in plant transformation for insect resistance has increased the interest in the potential toxicity of proteins towards insect pests. While studies have been targeted to a large array of insect species, phloem-feeding Homoptera have not been investigated yet. The paper describes a routine test for screening toxicity and growth inhibition of purified proteins in artificial diets onAcyrthosiphon pisum (Harris). Twenty-five commercially available proteins of different classes were tested and compared to some non-protein chemicals (an insecticide, an antibiotic …).A. pisum proved to be very sensitive to all proteases tested and to some venoms with general cytolytic properties. A plant lectin, concanavalin A, displayed significant toxicity and growth inhibition, while various proteins such as a soybean proteinase inhibitor, a chitinase, and bovine serum albumin showed measurable impairments of growth only at higher dose (≥250 μg.ml−1). Some proteins were without short-term effect onA. pisum physiology. The influence of these results on aphid-plant interactions are discussed.
Résumé L'effet de protéines alimentaires sur les insectes phloémophages, dont les pucerons, n'a jamais été étudié. Nous proposons ici un test biologique standardisé sur milieu artificiel permettant d'analyser les effets de différentes classes de protéines sur la physiologie d'A. pisum. La validité de ce test est éprouvée (protocole, reproductibilité) et les différentes données récoltées (mortalité et inhibition de croissance) permettent de définir des paramètres toxicologiques tels que concentration létale 50 ou concentration inhibitrice 50. Cette caractérisation toxicologique a été réalisée sur 25 protéines appartenant à des classes différentes, ainsi que plusieurs substances non protéiques utilisées comme témoin de toxicité (insecticide, antibiotique, inhibiteur de synthèse protéique et glucoside phénolique). Les regroupements de protéines par proximités de profils toxicologiques ont été corrélés aux activités biochimiques des différentes protéines. Les implications de ces résultats sur les interactions plante-puceron sont discutées, ainsi que le potentiel d'une stratégie de création de variétés transgéniques résistantes aux pucerons.

The amino acid composition of the diet ingested by reference and cafeteria diet-fed lean and obese Zucker rats has been analyzed from day 30 to 60 after birth. Their body protein amino acid composition was measured, as well as the urinary and faecal losses incurred during the period studied. The protein actually selected by the rats fed the cafeteria diet had essentially the same amino acid composition as the reference diet. The mean protein amino acid composition of the rat showed only small changes with breed, age or diet.Cafeteria-fed rats had a higher dietary protein digestion/absorption efficiency than reference diet-fed rats. Obese rats wasted a high proportion of dietary amino acids when given the reference diet, but not on the cafeteria diet. In all cases, the amino acids lost as such in the urine were a minimal portion of available amino acids.In addition to breed, the rates of protein accretion are deeply influenced by diet, but even more by the age — or size — of the animals: cafeteria-fed rats grew faster, to higher body protein settings, but later protein accrual decreased considerably; this is probably due to a limitation in the blueprint for growth which restricts net protein deposition when a certain body size is attained. Obese rats, however, kept accuring protein with high rates throughout.Diet composition — and not protein availability or quality-induced deep changes in amino acid metabolism. Since the differences in the absolute levels of dietary protein or carbohydrate energy ingested by rats fed the reference or cafeteria diets were small, it can be assumed that high (lipid) energy elicits the changes observed in amino acid metabolism by the cafeteria diet. The effects induced in the fate of the nitrogen ingested were more related to the fractional protein energy proportion than to its absolute values. Cafeteria-fed rats tended to absorb more amino acids and preserve them more efficiently; these effects were shown even under conditions of genetic obesity.There were deep differences in handling of dietary amino acids by dietary or genetically obese rats. The former manage to extract and accrue larger proportions of their dietary amino acids than the latter. The effects of both models of amino acid management were largely additive, suggesting that the mechanisms underlying the development of obesity did not run in parallel to those affecting the control of amino acid utilization. The possible structure of human blood-group antigens, as found in cochlear hair cells of 3-day-old rats, is suggested. Data were obtained from immunocytochemical studies using 77 antibodies against the major human blood group antigens of the ABO, H, I and Lewis genetic systems. Neither the anti-A-related nor the anti-Lewis-related antibodies showed any positive immunoreaction on hair cells. In contrast, anti-B, anti-AB and anti-H antibodies displayed specific positive immunoreactive patterns on the hair cells. The results suggest that, in immature hair cells, two main glycoconjugate structures of the lactoseries are present: H type 2 antigen, which is the precursor of the B type 2 antigen, and the B type 2 antigen itself. Similar H and B carbohydrate structures have been reported in rat olfactory receptors. The type 2 glycoconjugates carrying these H and B antigens of auditive and olfactory receptors are resistant to fixation and paraffin embedding, suggesting that they might be glycoproteins. These auditive and olfactory H and B antigens must be different from the B-related antigens that are expressed by pseudo-unipolar neurons of rat posterior root ganglia, that are built from type 4 core chains, and that are destroyed by routine paraffin embedding procedures.  相似文献

The first sign of developing intrafusal fibers in chicken leg muscles appeared on embryonic day (E) 13 when sensory axons contacted undifferentiated myotubes. In sections incubated with monoclonal antibodies against myosin heavy chains (MHC) diverse immunostaining was observed within the developing intrafusal fiber bundle. Large primary intrafusal myotubes immunostained moderately to strongly for embryonic and neonatal MHC, but they were unreactive or reacted only weakly with antibodies against slow MHC. Smaller, secondary intrafusal myotubes reacted only weakly to moderately for embryonic and neonatal MHC, but 1–2 days after their formation they reacted strongly for slow and slow-tonic MHC. In contrast to mammals, slow-tonic MHC was also observed in extrafusal fibers. Intrafusal fibers derived from primary myotubes acquired fast MHC and retained at least a moderate level of embryonic MHC. On the other hand, intrafusal fibers developing from secondary myotubes lost the embryonic and neonatal isoforms prior to hatching and became slow. Based on relative amounts of embryonic, neonatal and slow MHC future fast and slow intrafusal fibers could be first identified at E14. At the polar regions of intrafusal fibers positions of nerve endings and acetylcholinesterase activity were seen to match as early as E16. Approximately equal numbers of slow and fast intrafusal fibers formed prenatally; however, in postnatal muscle spindles fast fibers were usually in the majority, suggesting that some fibers transformed from slow to fast.  相似文献

We have used electron-microscopic studies, bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU) incorporation and antibody labeling to characterize the development of the Drosophila larval photoreceptor (or Bolwig's) organ and the optic lobe, and have investigated the role of Notch in the development of both. The optic lobe and Bolwig's organ develop by invagination from the posterior procephalic region. After cells in this region undergo four postblastoderm divisions, a total of approximately 85 cells invaginate. The optic lobe invagination loses contact with the outer surface of the embryo and forms an epithelial vesicle attached to the brain. Bolwig's organ arises from the ventralmost portion of the optic lobe invagination, but does not become incorporated in the optic lobe; instead, its 12 cells remain in the head epidermis until late in embryogenesis when they move in conjunction with head involution to reach their final position alongside the pharynx. Early, before head involution, the cells of Bolwig's organ form a superficial group of 7 cells arranged in a rosette pattern and a deep group of 5 cells. Later, all neurons move out of the surface epithelium. Unlike adult photoreceptors, they do not form rhabdomeres; instead, they produce multiple, branched processes, which presumably carry the photopigment. Notch is essential for two aspects of the early development of the visual system. First, it delimits the number of cells incorporated into Bolwig's organ. Second, it is required for the maintenance of the epithelial character of the optic lobe cells during and after its invagination.  相似文献

Vertical stratification is a key feature of tropical forests and structures plant–frugivore interactions. However, it is unclear whether vertical differences in plant-frugivore interactions are due to differences among strata in plant community composition or inherent preferences of frugivores for specific strata. To test this, we observed fruit removal of a diverse frugivore community on the liana Marcgravia longifolia in a Peruvian rain forest. Unlike most other plants, Marcgravia longifolia produces fruits across forest strata. This enabled us to study effects of vertical stratification on fruit removal without confounding effects of plant species and stratum. We found a high number of visits of a few frugivore species in the understorey and a low number of visits of many different frugivores in the canopy and midstorey. Whereas partial and opportunistic frugivores foraged across strata with differing frequencies, obligate frugivores were only found eating fruits in the higher strata. Avian frugivores foraging in the canopy were mainly large species with pointed wings, whereas under- and midstorey avian foragers were smaller with rounded wings. Our findings suggest a continuous shift in the frugivore community composition along the vertical gradient, from a few generalized frugivores in the understorey to a diverse set of specialized frugivores in the canopy. This shift in the frugivore community leads to correlated, reciprocal changes from specialized to generalized plant-frugivore interactions. Thus, we conclude that vertical niche differentiation between species in tropical forests persists even when food resources are available across strata. This highlights its role for promoting biodiversity and ecosystem functioning.  相似文献

Abstract: There are three major breeding populations of southern elephant seals centered on Macquarie Island, Kerguelen-Heard Islands and South Georgia-Antarctic Peninsula. The composition of the diet differs between these populations based on published data from Signy Island and data presented here from Macquarie and Heard Islands. These differences in diet appear to be linked to the location at which seals were sampled ranging from the least Antarctic (Macquarie Island) to the most Antarctic (Signy Island). The major food remains consisted of cephalopod beaks and fish eye lenses. More benthic material was found at Heard Island than at Macquarie Island. The diet at Macquarie Island differed between summer and winter and between young animals and adults. The difficulty in collecting dietary samples of southern elephant seals near their main foraging areas makes the study of the feeding ecology of this species extremely difficult in comparison with other Southern Ocean species.  相似文献
