As shown in single-sensillum recordings, iodobenzene has a bimodal effect on the receptor cell tuned to benzoic acid (BA) of the female silk moth Bombyx mori. Exposure to iodobenzene causes an inhibition of the response to BA. With stimulation by iodobenzene alone, a reduction of basic nerve impulse firing during exposure is followed by a transient post-stimulus excitation (rebound). We suggest that inhibition suppresses excitation during exposure but fades afterwards more rapidly than excitation. Due to the spatial equivalence of the iodine and the acid residue, these effects might indicate opposing interactions of iodobenzene with the specific site for the key compound BA. This is supported by the fact that substitutions by smaller halogens are less effective in both inhibition and rebound. The inhibitory effect but not the rebound with iodobenzene alone was also observed in receptor cells tuned to key compounds other than benzoic acid, e.g. in the cell most sensitive to 2,6-dimethyl-5-heptene-2-ol (DMH-cell) occurring in the same sensillum as the BA-cell, or in the bombykol- and bombykal-cells of the male. At least in these cells the inhibitory effect might reflect the action of iodobenzene on a general site, e.g. the lipid matrix of the plasma membrane of the receptor cells. 相似文献

Odor quality is thought to be encoded by the activation of partially overlapping subsets of glomeruli in the olfactory bulb (odor maps). Mouse genetic studies have demonstrated that olfactory sensory neurons (OSNs) expressing a particular olfactory receptor target their axons to a few individual glomeruli in the bulb. While the specific targeting of OSN axons provides a molecular underpinning for the odor maps, much remains to be understood about the relationship between the functional and molecular maps. In this article, we ask the question whether intensive training of mice in a go/no-go operant conditioning odor discrimination task affects odor maps measured by determining c-fos up-regulation in periglomerular cells. Data analysis is performed using a newly developed suite of computational tools designed to systematically map functional and molecular features of glomeruli in the adult mouse olfactory bulb. This suite provides the necessary tools to process high-resolution digital images, map labeled glomeruli, visualize odor maps, and facilitate statistical analysis of patterns of identified glomeruli in the olfactory bulb. The software generates odor maps (density plots) based on glomerular activity, density, or area. The Internet and the Grid are changing the face of high performance computing. Rather than tightly-coupled SPMD-style components running in a single cluster, on a parallel machine, or even on the Internet programmed in MPI, applications are evolving into sets of cooperating components scattered across diverse computational elements. These components may run on different operating systems and hardware platforms and may be written by different organizations in different languages. Complete applications are constructed by assembling these components in a plug-and-play fashion. This new vision for high performance computing demands features and characteristics not easily provided by traditional high-performance communications middleware. In response to these needs, we have developed ECho, a high-performance event-delivery middleware that meets the new demands of the Grid environment. ECho provides efficient binary transmission of event data with unique features that support data-type discovery and enterprise-scale application evolution. We present measurements detailing ECho's performance to show that ECho significantly outperforms other systems intended to provide this functionality and provides throughput and latency comparable to the most efficient middleware infrastructures available. 相似文献

In mammals, the part of the nervous system responsible for most circadian behavior can be localized to a pair of structures in the hypothalamus known as the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN). Importantly, when SCN neurons are removed from the organism and maintained in a brain slice preparation, they continue to generate 24h rhythms in electrical activity, secretion, and gene expression. Previous studies suggest that the basic mechanism responsible for the generation of these rhythms is intrinsic to individual cells in the SCN. If we assume that individual cells in the SCN are competent circadian oscillators, it is obviously important to understand how these cells communicate and remain synchronized with each other. Cell-to-cell communication is clearly necessary for conveying inputs to and outputs from the SCN and may be involved in ensuring the high precision of the observed rhythm. In addition, there is a growing body of evidence that a number of systems-level phenomena could be dependent on the cellular communication between circadian pacemaker neurons. It is not yet known how this cellular synchronization occurs, but it is likely that more than one of the already proposed mechanisms is utilized. The structure of male songs and the timing of female replies with respect to the male songs are described for four species of the palaearctic bushcricket genus Barbitistes (B. constrictus, B. ocskayi, B. serricauda, B. yersini). In a male song, 3 to 16 syllables form a chirp followed by a trigger syllable after a longer interval. The trigger syllable releases a female reply with a latency of 30 to 50 ms in all four species. In B. serricauda songs, there is no clearly separated trigger syllable. Instead, the first syllable of a chirp functions as a trigger syllable. Some B. serricauda males may produce a short female-type syllable just at the moment, when a female would reply. The possible function of such a syllable is acoustical mimicry. When comparing at least two song parameters, each species occupies a specific combination of values. According to the overlap of parameters a close phylogenetic relationship between B. constrictus and B. serricauda and between B. ocskayi and B. yersini is assumed. Acoustic communication signals change over distance due to lossof
amplitude and fidelity, and it is assumed that signal degradationinfluences
the receiver's ability to detect and decode signals.The degree of degradation
depends on the signal's structureand the environment through which it
transmits. We broadcastthe advertisement calls of 22 species of Central
American frogsat two heights within forested and open environments in Panama.
Werecorded these calls at five distances from the source and estimatedsignal
degradation with a cross-correlation analysis, a measurethat combines the
effects of decrement in signal amplitude andfidelity. Calls degraded less
when broadcast higher above theground compared to on the ground, and less in
open habitat comparedto forested habitat; there was an additional interaction
betweenheight and environment. Furthermore, calls with low dominant
frequenciesexperienced less degradation than calls with high dominant
frequencies.There was no evidence, however, that the calls of these frogs

评述了天牛成虫信息素及嗅觉感受机制的研究进展。天牛雌、雄成虫均可释放性信息素,迄今已对31种天牛的性信息素进行了研究,其中完成组分鉴定的有13种。天牛性信息素包括长距离、短距离和接触性信息素3种类型。天牛性信息素存在变异现象,同种天牛分布在不同地区,其性信息素组分之间存在差异。触角是天牛感受性信息素的主要器官,也是判别成虫通讯方式的形态指标,性信息素发达的种类其触角常具显著的性二型现象。天牛利用寄主信息素(如萜烯类、醇类和酯类)寻找寄主。性信息素和寄主信息素在林间复合使用可提高诱捕率。天牛信息素还包括异种信息素、忌避信息素和产卵干扰素,能够提高天牛寄主定位效率。天牛触角嗅觉感受的神经细胞(RNs)有3类,气味信息经神经细胞群传输至中枢神经系统,神经信号按标记路线或交叉纤维样式输导。天牛气味结合蛋白(OBP)方面的研究尚未见报道。 相似文献
