Low phosphorus availability stimulates root hair elongation in many plants, which may have adaptive significance in soil phosphorus acquisition. We investigated the effect of low phosphorus on the elongation of Arabidopsis thaliana root hairs. Arabidopsis thaliana plants were grown in plant culture containing high (1000 mmol m?3) or low (1 mmol m?3) phosphorus concentrations, and root hair elongation was analysed by image analysis. After 15d of growth, low-phosphorus plants developed root hairs averaging 0.9 mm in length while high-phosphorus plants of the same age developed root hairs averaging 0.3 mm in length. Increased root hair length in low-phosphorus plants was a result of both increased growth duration and increased growth rate. Root hair length decreased logarithmically in response to increasing phosphorus concentration. Local changes in phosphorus availability influenced root hair growth regardless of the phosphorus status of the plant. Low phosphorus stimulated root hair elongation in the hairless axr2 mutant, exogenously applied IAA stimulated root hair elongation in wild-type high-phosphorus plants and the auxin antagonist CM PA inhibited root hair elongation in low-phosphorus plants. These results indicate that auxin may be involved in the low-phosphorus response in root hairs.  相似文献

In order to study the influence of Arbuscular Mycorrhiza (AM) on the development of root rot infection, tomato plants were raised with or withoutGlomus mosseae and/orPhytophthora nicotianae var.parasitica in a sand culture system. All plants were fed with a nutrient solution containing one of two phosphorus (P) levels, 32µM (I P) or 96µM (II P), to test the consequence of enhanced P nutrition by the AM fungus on disease dynamics. Mycorrhizal plants had a similar development to that of control plants. Treatment withPhytophthora nicotianae var.parasitica resulted in a visible reduction in plant weight and in a widespread root necrosis in plants without mycorrhiza. The presence of the AM fungus decreased both weight reduction and root necrosis. The percentage reduction of adventitious root necrosis and of necrotic root apices ranged between 63 and 89% The enhancement of P nutrition increased plant development, but did not appreciably decrease disease spread. In our system, mycorrhiza increased plant resistance toP. nicotianae var.parasitica infection. Although a contribution of P nutrition by mycorrhiza cannot be excluded, other mechanisms appear to play a crucial role.  相似文献

At Mono Lake, California, we investigated field water relations, leaf and xylem chemistry, and gas exchange for two shrub species that commonly co-occur on marginally saline soils, and have similar life histories and rooting patterns. Both species had highest root length densities close to the surface and have large tap roots that probably reach ground water at 3.4-5.0 m on the study site. The species differed greatly in leaf water relations and leaf chemistry. Sarcobatus vermiculatus had a seasonal minimum predawn xylem pressure potential (ψpd) of -2.7 MPa and a midday potential (ψmd) of -4.1 MPa. These were significantly lower than for Chrysothamnus nauseosus, which had a minimum ψpd of -1.0 MPa and ψmd of -2.2 MPa. Sarcobatus had leaf Na of up to 9.1 % and K up to 2.7 % of dry mass, and these were significantly higher than for Chrysothamnus which had seasonal maxima of 0.4% leaf Na and 2.4 % leaf K. The molar ratios of leaf K/Na, Ca/Na, and Mg/Na were substantially lower for Sarcobatus than for Chrysothamnus. Xylem ionic contents indicated that both species excluded some Na at the root, but that Chrysothamnus was excluding much more than Sarcobatus. The higher Na content of Sarcobatus leaves was associated with greater leaf succulence, lower calculated osmotic potential, and lower xylem pressure potentials. Despite large differences in water relations and leaf chemistry, these species maintained similar diurnal patterns and rates of photosynthesis and stomatal conductance to water vapor diffusion. Sarcobatus ψpd may not reflect soil moisture availability due to root osmotic and hydraulic properties.  相似文献

Selected nutritional and developmental factors regulating the predatory behavior of first-instar spined assassin bugsSinea diadema (Fabricius) (Hemiptera: Reduviidae) were investigated. The longevity of unfed nymphs provided with free water, bean pod sections, or glucose solutions was not significantly greater than that of unfed nymphs which were not provided with a source of water. First-instarS. diadema that were provided with larvae ofEphestia kuehniella Zeller (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) as prey began feeding 1.9 (±0.9) days after hatching. In contrast, first-instarS. diadema that were provided with conspecifics of the same age did not begin feeding until they were 3.9 (±0.9) days old. These results suggest that the potential nutritional benefits to be gained from feeding equal or outweigh the risk of attacking prey capable of effective self-defense only when nymphs have not fed for 4 days after hatching. Providing the nymphs with water or glucose solutions significantly delayed the onset of conspecific predation. Additional data are presented which demonstrate that first-instarS. diadema are not restrained from preying on siblings by kin recognition.  相似文献

Spinach plants (Spinacea oleracea L. cv. Estivato) were grown on nutrient solutions under deficient, normal and excess sulfate supply. In both young and mature plants net uptake of sulfate and its transport to the shoot increased with increasing sulfate supply, but both processes proceeded at a higher rate in young as compared to mature plants. The relative sulfate transport, i.e. the relative amount of the sulfate taken up that is transported to the shoot, decreased with increasing sulfate supply. Apparently, net uptake of sulfate is not strictly controlled by the sulfur demand of the shoot, but xylem loading appears to counteract excess transport of sulfate to the shoot. Fumigation with H2S or SO2 reduced net uptake of sulfate by the roots in sulfur-deficient plants and absolute as well as relative sulfate transport to the shoot independent of the three sulfate levels supplied to the plant. At the same time thiol contents of the shoot and the root were enhanced by fumigation with H2S and SO2. These findings are consistent with the idea that thiols produced in the leaves can mediate demand-driven control of sulfate uptake by the roots and its transport to the shoot.  相似文献

We studied the nest defense behavior of Eurasian kestrels (Falcotinnunculus) towards a stuffed pine marten (Martes martes) througha 3-year vole cycle (1990–92) in western Finland. Survivalprobability of offspring decreases with a later start of breeding,and, therefore, early breeders should protect their offspringmore than late ones. We found this true for males during theincubation period, but not for females. In addition, we expectedthe nest defense intensity to increase with offspring number.During the incubation period, this was true for females, butnot for males. During the nestling phase, parents did not adjusttheir defense effort to natural or manipulated (by one to twoyoung) brood size. Survival prospects of kestrel offspring werehighest in the increasing vole year 1991 and lowest in the decreasingvole year 1992, and, therefore, we expected the defense activityof kestrels to follow the same trend. However, the oppositeresult appeared true for females with a similar tendency formales. Most hypotheses predicting avian nest defense behaviorwere not supported by our data. Temporally heterogeneous environmentand low degree of nest-site tenacity of migratory kestrels maymake them unfamiliar with environmental variation and survivalprospects of their offspring. Therefore, fitness benefits ofparental care are not predictable, and kestrels may thus adjusttheir parental effort to their own future reproductive potential(i.e., number of future breeding attempts), rather than to somecurrent investment indicator, like offspring age and number.  相似文献

Summary Wyeomyia smithii mosquitoes distribute their eggs across available oviposition sites (water-holding pitcher plant leaves) of varying quality. I experimentally examined responses to three components of site quality: conspecific larval density, larval density of the pitcher plant midge,Metriocnemus knabi, and pitcher size. Responses to larval treatments were complex and apparently suboptimal. Although mosquito larval performance is better in leaves with fewer conspecific and more midge larvae, females did not lay more eggs in such pitchers. Instead, more eggs were laid in experimental pitchers containing either midge or mosquito larvae, but fewer eggs in pitchers with neither or both. More eggs were laid in larger pitchers, which tend to accumulate more resources and dry out less often. Therefore, although the oviposition decisions made were suboptimal, they were better than random.  相似文献

Severely yellowed ten-year-old spruce trees growing in the Vosges Mountains on an acidic soil were fertilised with Magnesium lime during the spring of 1990. The effects of this treatment were assessed 18 months later. A very significant improvement of the mineral status of the trees was detected, with increasing Mg contents in the needles, and as a consequence, reduced yellowing and improved chlorophyll content. Only slight differences with control trees were observed for height increase. Effects of this improved nutrition on photosynthesis were tested measuring net CO2 assimilation rates and chlorophyll a fluorescence. Light-saturated net assimilation rates of current-year needles were high, reaching 5.3 mol m–2 s–1 on a total needle area basis. The improvement in chlorophyll and Mg content had no significant effect on net assimilation rates or on any parameter describing photochemical functions of both current-and previous-year needles. Despite the strong inter-individual variability in needle chlorophyll and Mg contents (ranging from 0.2 to 0.8 mg g–1 fresh weight, and 0.05 to 0.5 mg g-1 dry weight respectively), photochemical efficiency of PS II under limiting irradiance only decreased significantly on older needles displaying Mg contents below 0.1 mg g–1. Amino acid release from roots of sterile and non-sterile, solution-grown, 7-, 21- and 60-days-old forage rape plants (Brassica napus L.), was measured over periods of up to 6 hours. With sterile plants, release of amino acids into a fixed volume of collection medium (6, 12, 70 mL) was concentration-limited, giving rise to similar convex accumulation profiles for individual acids. In contrast, amino acid accumulation in continuously circulating collection medium was not concentration limited, giving a linear accumulation pattern. The compositions of accumulating amino acids, which were similar to those measured in root extracts, did not change significantly. However, the proportions of ALA, GABA, GLU and ILE in both root extracts and root-derived amino acids increased as plants aged. Older plants released more amino acids per plant, while younger plants released more amino acids g-1 root DW. Using non-sterile plants, the patterns of change in amino acid concentration and composition in the collection medium were completely different from those determined with sterile plants. In general, with 7-days-old plants, and 60-days-old plants that had recently become non-sterile, an initial rise in the concentration of all acids was followed by a fall to low levels. The loss of amino acids was apparently due to microbial consumption. Individual amino acids attained maximum concentration at different times during the collection process. This is attributed mainly to concentration-dependent differential assimilation of amino acids, since those with the highest initial concentrations, the major components of the mixtures released from roots, declined the earliest. When calculated rates of amino acid release from roots (Rr) and microbial consumption of amino acids (Rc) were compared (for 7-days-old plants), the highest ratios of Rc/Rr were found for ASN, ARG, GLU, GLN, and LYS. This suggests a degree of selectivity for glutamate and nitrogen-rich acids on the part of the consuming micro-organisms. With 21-days old plants and 60-days old plants grown entirely under non-sterile conditions, fluctuations in amino acid concentration were similar for all acids.  相似文献

The pH of the nutrient solution bathing the roots of four-month-oldPinus contorta var.latifolia Englm. seedlings was monitored continuously between additions of nutrients. Nitrogen was supplied in the form of NH4NO3, and was added three times per week in amounts relative to seedling fresh weight. No pH change was associated with the nutrient addition cycle; however, extinguishing of the lights at night resulted in a decrease in pH of almost half a pH unit in the first hour. The pH reverted to normal within a few hours. Re-illumination resulted in a pH increase of a smaller magnitude, but over a similar time span. Estimation of the proton extrusion rate gave values of about 17 µmol (g FW root)–1 h–1.  相似文献
