We studied serum testosterone levels in the endemic Mexican cottontail, Sylvilagus cunicularius, which has been reported to show seasonal breeding. Animals were trapped in the wild and in a field enclosure in the National Park La Malinche in central Mexico over a period of five years. Serum testosterone (T) levels were quantified by ELISA from blood samples. T levels of adult males were lowest around 4 months after the onset of the annual reproductive season and were already high prior to the onset of breeding. As expected, the T levels of adult females were consistently lower than in males, and there were no differences in T level with respect to female reproductive state. There were no detectable sex-specific differences in juveniles and subadults, but there was a marked increase in T levels between juvenile and adult males. Overall, our study clearly reflects and confirms the seasonal breeding strategy of this species, showing high similarities to the much better studied European rabbit.  相似文献

The purpose of this paper is to develop a model for simulation of the formation of organelle traps in fast axonal transport. Such traps may form in the regions of microtubule polar mismatching. Depending on the orientation of microtubules pointing toward the trap region, these traps can accumulate either plus-end or minus-end oriented vesicles. The model predicts that the maximum concentrations of organelles occur at the boundaries of the trap regions; the overall concentration of organelles in the axon with traps is greatly increased compared to that in a healthy axon, which is expected to contribute to mechanical damages of the axon. The organelle traps induce hindrance to organelle transport down the axon; the total organelle flux down the axon with traps is found to be significantly reduced compared to that in a healthy axon.  相似文献

To determine whether latitudinal variation in herbivore impact exists, we examined three major herbivorous insect feeding types (chewers, gallers, and miners) on/in leaves of Japanese beech. Herbivores were collected with litter traps deployed in forests across a latitudinal gradient of 10°. Leaf litter analyses demonstrated that chewing herbivory increased with increasing latitude of collection site. However, the densities of miners and gallers decreased with latitude. To test whether latitudinal variation in herbivore damage occurs in the absence of geographically differentiated environmental cueing (e.g., physical stresses or herbivore damage), we measured both genetically determined constitutive leaf traits and herbivore damage in a common-garden experiment. In this experiment, miner density decreased with latitude, but chewing herbivory did not vary latitudinally. Galler density was higher on trees from native provenances than on trees from unrelated provenances likely because of local adaptations. Leaf mass per unit area (LMA), tannin, and phenolics all decreased with latitude of provenance. The latitudinal variation in one constitutive leaf trait (LMA) best explained latitudinal variation in chewing herbivory. Thus, different mechanisms account for feeding type-specific patterns of latitudinal variation in herbivore damage among different herbivore feeding types.  相似文献

Previous investigations, performed on isolated rat atria, showed that the lipophylic spin-trapping agent N-tert-butyl-alpha-phenylnitrone (PBN) is able to prevent the acute cardiotoxic effects produced by doxorubicin (DXR), whereas the hydrophylic compound 5,5-dimethyl-pyrroline-N-oxide (DMPO) is inactive. The present study was designed to ascertain whether differences in the pharmacological effects of the two spin traps are related to their different subcellular distribution. Langendorff rat hearts were perfused for 60 minutes with [I4C]-DXR and either PBN or DMPO. The subcellular mapping of the three compounds was performed by measuring DXR by liquid scintillation counting, PBN by GC/MS, and DMPO by HPLC in the following isolated fractions: nuclei, mitochondria, sarcoplasmic reticulum, sarcolemma, cytosol. DMPO was shown to accumulate in the cytosolic compartment; both PBM and DXR are taken up by nuclei and mitochondria, while only trace amounts of DXR were detected in the sarcoplasmic reticulum. These results suggest that mitochondrial (and not sarcoplasmic) enzymes are mainly involved in DXR-induced free radical production, which is thought to cause the acute cardiotoxic effects of DXR. An involvement of DXR-induced free radical generation in the nuclear compartment seems unlikely in the short-term “in vitro” effects observed with the experimental model adopted for these studies, although it may play a role in the delayed pathology.  相似文献

The susceptibility of populations of the summer fruit tortrix moth, Adoxophyes orana, from apple orchards in Kent, England, to chlorpyrifos was determined in 1992, 1994 and 1995, by topically dosing larvae feeding on leaves or adults adhered to pheromone trap sticky bases. LD50 values (range 6.3 to 23.2 ng chlorpyrifos per individual) for first or second generation males, second generation females or for first generation fourth instar larvae collected in the field were significantly greater (2–3 fold) for populations from orchards with a long history of treatment with broad-spectrum organophosphorous and other insecticides than for those from untreated orchards (range 1.6 to 8.1 ng chlorpyrifos per individual), though there was considerable variation between sites and years. Twelve replicated orchard experiments between 1993 and 1995 were used to examine a range of different strategies for insecticidal control. Applications of chlorpyrifos against overwintered larvae feeding in trusses in spring gave, at best, a 75% reduction in larval numbers, insufficient to prevent damage by the subsequent generation in summer. However, two applications of fenoxycarb (one immediately pre-and one immediately post-blossom of apple cv. Cox) completely prevented successful subsequent development of the pest, and a single (post-blossom) spray nearly so. The timing of application of chlorpyrifos against first generation larvae hatching from eggs in June was shown to be critical and currently used methods of spray-timing were unreliable. The effective persistence of chlorpyrifos was short (< 7 days). Though good control could be achieved with a single spray, a better strategy was to apply a series of sprays at 7-day intervals to cover the egg hatch period. Sprays of Bacillus thuringiensis at the same timing intervals gave, maximally, an 80% reduction in larval numbers, but usually less: improved control was not achieved by applying a programme of sprays compared to a single spray, though a novel, more potent, formulation was significantly more active. Triazophos was also effective as an egg hatch spray. Sprays of chlorpyrifos or tebufenozide between late September and mid-October 1995 against second or third instar larvae migrating to overwintering sites before diapause, failed to reduce significantly the numbers of subsequent overwintering larvae or the numbers that emerged to feed on blossom trusses in spring.  相似文献

Gundersen et al . (2001 , Source-sink dynamics: how sinks affect demography of sources. Ecol. Lett. , 4, 14–21.) suggested that sinks can severely affect the demography of populations in source habitats. We propose this is a common result when animals lack cues associated with reduced fitness inside sinks and consequently select habitat inappropriately. These attractive sinks can result either from undetected risks of mortality (as in the experiment of Gundersen et al . 2001 ) or from undetected poor breeding probabilities (due to bioaccumulation of pesticides, for instance). Thus, individual habitat choice is a key process underlying source–sink dynamics.  相似文献

Abstract: Ips typographus is one of the major forest pests in the Italian Alps. From 1996, populations of I. typographus in Friuli‐Venezia Giulia region (NE Italy) have been permanently monitored in areas of outbreak by using pheromone traps. At the same time, damage caused by the insect was estimated annually. Preliminary analysis of the data (1996–2002) reveals some interesting information: (i) the flight activity of I. typographus is very extended and occurs over a period of about 4 months (May to August); (ii) there is a high correlation between mean captures per trap and annual damage; (iii) there is a high correlation between spring captures (May to mid‐June) and total captures (May to August), and between spring captures (May to mid‐June) and annual damage. The correlation between spring captures and damage allows the determination of a reliable risk‐damage threshold (about 5000 beetles/trap, in spring), reducing at the same time, the monitoring period and the general costs.  相似文献
