Although considerable anecdotal evidence suggests that pregnancy affects olfactory sensitivity, scientific evidence is limited and inconclusive. Whereas hedonic ratings are affected by pregnancy, odor identification is not. The aim of the current study was to examine odor perception in women across pregnancy and in the postpartum period. One hundred nonsmoking women who were pregnant, postpartum, or had never been pregnant were tested on the University of Pennsylvania Smell Identification Test (UPSIT). Intensity ratings and scratch patterns were collected as potential indicators of sensitivity, and participants rated the odors' pleasantness. Participants also rated their own sense of smell. Mean UPSIT scores did not differ significantly across groups indicating no difference in odor identification. Trends in planned comparisons suggested that in the first trimester, odors were rated as more intense and less pleasant. In the first trimester, women scratched the odor strips significantly fewer times. Consistent with previous reports, 90% of pregnant women reported that specific odors smelled less pleasant and 60% reported that some odors smelled more pleasant. Although nearly two-thirds of pregnant women rated their olfactory sensitivity to be enhanced during pregnancy and overall pregnant women's self-rated olfactory sensitivity was higher than controls', self-ratings were not correlated with UPSIT scores nor odor intensity ratings. These results suggest that these and previous findings may reflect the fact that the effect of pregnancy on olfaction is small and inconsistent. 相似文献

It has been estimated that approximately 30% of the population is unable to detect the odor of androstenone. These estimates, however, were made using tests and criteria optimized for identifying detection. Such criteria favor Type II over Type I errors--that is, they are excellent at identifying true detectors at the cost of erroneously labeling some detectors as non-detectors. Because these criteria were used to identify non-detectors, it is possible that the rate of non-detection may have been overestimated. To test this we screened 55 subjects for non-detection employing previously used methods. This screen yielded nine putative non-detectors, a 16.3% putative non-detection rate. We then retested these putative non-detectors using a forced choice (yes-no) paradigm to obtain a precise measure of their sensitivity. We found that this group of putative non-detectors was significantly above chance at detecting androstenone (P < 0.001), despite very low self-confidence in their performance. Based on the results of the signal detection analysis in this sample, we estimate the rate of actual androstenone non-detection in young healthy adults is between 1.8 and 5.96%, which is significantly lower than previously estimated. ABSTRACT Brood:pair ratios could provide an economical method for assessing spatial or temporal variation in waterfowl productivity, but such estimators are severely biased by incomplete detection of broods. We conducted 3 sequential counts of 1,357 waterfowl broods in northeastern North Dakota, USA, and used closed-population mark-recapture models to estimate total brood abundance while controlling for variation in detection probabilities (p). Blue-winged teal (Anas discors) broods had the lowest average detection probability (p = 0.305), whereas diving-duck broods had the highest average detectability (p = 0.571). Detection was generally highest in morning or evening, but temporal patterns varied among species and there was no survey window that maximized detection probabilities for all species. Detection probabilities averaged 0.108 (SD = 0.056) higher for an experienced observer versus an inexperienced observer. Detection probabilities were 0.044 higher for roadside versus walk-up surveys and increased with increasing brood size, total brood abundance, survey date, wind speed, temperature, cloud cover, and amount of time spent surveying each wetland. Detection probabilities declined with increasing wetland size and amount of tall peripheral vegetation. Our mark-recapture results indicated that a traditional unreplicated brood survey would have missed 67.5% of estimated broods, summed over all species. Use of closed-population mark-recapture techniques provided an effective method for reducing this bias and identifying and quantifying factors that reduce detection probabilities of waterfowl broods. We recommend that future brood surveys incorporate 2 or 3 temporally segregated replicate counts to allow for formal estimation of detection probabilities. 相似文献

【目的】通过分子方法检测近海污染环境优势种灰黄青霉,并为由此而推断污染程度做准备。【方法】根据GenBank中青霉属不同种和相近属种的ITS序列差异和灰黄青霉特有的IAO序列,设计了污染区优势种灰黄青霉的特异性引物AS1/RS4和IAO1/IAO2,建立相应的特异探针检测体系。通过PCR和套式PCR技术,分析比较两对特异序列检测灰黄青霉的差异。【结果】建立的分子检测体系可以排除其它近似或相关菌株干扰,从环境中扩增到目的基因片段。利用引物AS1/RS4作为核酸探针,通过套式PCR菌株DNA的检测灵敏度可达到10fg/μL,当仅有10个数量级分生孢子时即可检测出,从沉积物中检测灵敏度为102个数量级孢子/0.25g。特异酶基因IAO1/IAO2检测灵敏度较前者稍低。【结论】利用特异序列作为探针检测污染环境优势种灰黄青霉的方法可行,在一定范围内,灰黄青霉的出现频率及数量对污染程度有较好的指示作用。 相似文献

Anionic polysaccharides, such as glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) and alginate, readily undergo source-induced fragmentation when analyzed by electrospray mass spectrometry with the use of high source cone voltage. The dissociation chemistry converts all components of a polysaccharide into a small set of structurally characteristic small saccharides. This chemistry enables the collective detection of a polysaccharide through the detection of one or more small saccharides. This ability, combined with the elution of polysaccharides as relatively compact bands using ion-pairing reverse phase liquid chromatography, created a unique opportunity for the development of LC–MS methods suitable for the quantitative analysis of intact anionic polysaccharides. Apartment electrical wiring: a cause of extremely low frequency magnetic field exposure in residential areas 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Extremely low frequency (ELF) magnetic fields (MFs) were measured at 696 points in a room of a Japanese apartment building. The building had 124 rooms with layouts and wiring identical to those of the studied room. ELF-MFs exceeded 0.4 microT in 24% of the living space, and the maximum value, 1.8 microT, was detected at floor level. Analysis of the MF distribution revealed that 60 Hz 100 V electrical wiring for room lights within the floor and ceiling had been laid out in large rectangles, equivalent to 1 turn coils. Further plotting of the vertical components every 0.01 m on the floor indicated that the depth of the cable was 0.23 m. Further studies should be conducted in order to confirm that the building investigated in this pilot study is typical of Japanese apartment buildings in terms of ELF-MFs. 相似文献

在室内研究了温度对双纹须歧角螟Trichophysetis cretacea (Butler)生长发育及繁殖的影响。结果表明,在19~31℃范围内,双纹歧角螟的发育速率随着温度的升高而加快;当温度超过31℃时,发育速率减慢。在各虫态中,蛹期的存活受温度变化的影响最大,35℃时蛹全部死亡。19℃、23℃、27℃、31℃和35℃下的世代存活率分别为87.1%、83.0%、85.2%、70.1%和0%。卵、幼虫、预蛹、蛹及从卵至成虫的发育起点温度分别为9.08℃、8.95℃、7.80℃、9.09℃和8.86℃,有效积温分别为62.4、122.0、16.0、108.1和309.1日·度。成虫的寿命随温度的升高而缩短,27℃时成虫的产卵量最高,平均为91.3粒。19℃、23℃、27℃和31℃条件下,实验种群的净生殖率分别为31.0、41.8、46.7、0.8,内禀增长率分别为0.0813、0.1439、0.1710、-0.0094,平均世代周期分别为42.2、26.3、23.1和19.2天。 相似文献

Acoustic signals transmit information by temporal characteristics and envelope periodicity as well as by their frequency content.
Many animals can extract the frequency content of a signal by means of specialized organs such as the cochlea but for the
detection and identification of higher-order periodicity, e.g., amplitude modulations, this type of organ is useless. In addition,
many animals do not have a cochlea but still depend on a reliable identification of different frequencies in the vast variety
of acoustic signals they perceive in their natural environment. Hence, neural mechanisms to decode periodicity information
must exist. We present a detailed mathematical analysis of a recurrent and a feedforward model of neuronal periodicity extraction
and discuss basic constraints for neuronal circuitry performing such a task in a biological system. Both the recurrent and
the feedforward model perform well using neuronal parameters typical for the auditory system. Performance is limited mainly
