The ‘uncanny valley’ response is a phenomenon involving the elicitation of a negative feeling and subsequent avoidant behaviour in human adults and infants as a result of viewing very realistic human-like robots or computer avatars. It is hypothesized that this uncanny feeling occurs because the realistic synthetic characters elicit the concept of ‘human’ but fail to satisfy it. Such violations of our normal expectations regarding social signals generate a feeling of unease. This conflict-induced uncanny valley between mutually exclusive categories (human and synthetic agent) raises a new question: could an uncanny feeling be elicited by other mutually exclusive categories, such as familiarity and novelty? Given that infants prefer both familiarity and novelty in social objects, we address this question as well as the associated developmental profile. Using the morphing technique and a preferential-looking paradigm, we demonstrated uncanny valley responses of infants to faces of mothers (i.e. familiarity) and strangers (i.e. novelty). Furthermore, this effect strengthened with the infant''s age. We excluded the possibility that infants detect and avoid traces of morphing. This conclusion follows from our finding that the infants equally preferred strangers’ faces and the morphed faces of two strangers. The nectar-feeding bat Glossophaga can be trained to discriminate two hollow forms, a hollow hemisphere and a paraboloid with the same diameter and depth, in total darkness. During training a saturation level of about 85-90% correct choices or more can be reached within 50-100 visits. To investigate generalization abilities, the bats were tested with pairs of the same shape but of different size. Although no reward was offered, they preferred the hollow sphere (30 mm and 50 mm diameter, but not 18 mm) over the corresponding paraboloids. Thus, the bats were able to generalize some features of the rewarded form and detect them in forms of the same shape but different size. This transposition is remarkable, since the bats could not use absolute spectral characters, but had to pay attention to size-independent features common to hollow hemispheres. In this paper I present a transcendental argument based on the findings of cognitive psychology and neurophysiology which invites two conclusions: First and foremost, that a pre-condition of visual perception itself is precisely what the Aristotelian and other commonsense realists maintain, namely, the independent existence of a featured, or pre-packaged world; second, this finding, combined with other reflections, suggests that, contra McDowell and other neo-Kantians, human beings have access to things as they are in the world via non-projective perception. The measurement of time is fundamental to the perception of complex, temporally structured acoustic signals such as speech and music, yet the mechanisms of temporal sensitivity in the auditory system remain largely unknown. Recently, temporal feature detectors have been discovered in several vertebrate auditory systems. For example, midbrain neurons in the fish Pollimyrus are activated by specific rhythms contained in the simple sounds they use for communication. This poses the significant challenge of uncovering the neuro-computational mechanisms that underlie temporal feature detection. Here we describe a model network that responds selectively to temporal features of communication sounds, yielding temporal selectivity in output neurons that matches the selectivity functions found in the auditory system of Pollimyrus. The output of the network depends upon the timing of excitatory and inhibitory input and post-inhibitory rebound excitation. Interval tuning is achieved in a behaviorally relevant range (10 to 40 ms) using a biologically constrained model, providing a simple mechanism that is suitable for the neural extraction of the relatively long duration temporal cues (i.e. tens to hundreds of ms) that are important in animal communication and human speech. 相似文献

Evolution requires the genotype–phenotype distinction, a primeval epistemic cut that separates energy-degenerate, rate-independent genetic symbols from the rate-dependent dynamics of construction that they control. This symbol–matter or subject–object distinction occurs at all higher levels where symbols are related to a referent by an arbitrary code. The converse of control is measurement in which a rate-dependent dynamical state is coded into quiescent symbols. Non-integrable constraints are one necessary condition for bridging the epistemic cut by measurement, control, and coding. The majority of the public in industrial countries believes that pollution and low doses of radiation are threats to good
health. As a matter of fact, when these putative risks are compared to those originating from lifestyle, they appear very
small. In particular, the risks associated with low doses of irradiation, even when they are assessed with the most pessimistic
models, appear extremely small. Public anxiety is fuelled by the uncertainty regarding the magnitude of this risk and the
use of the linear no threshold (LNT) hypothesis, which gives credence to the concept that even the smallest doses are harmful.
There are a number of scientific and epidemiological data currently under debate that are not consistent with the LNT hypothesis.
For example, no difference in the incidence of cancers or of birth defects has been observed between regions with low or high
natural irradiation. This inconsistency between perceptions and data underlines the role of psychological factors studied
since 1957 which should be placed in the perspective of the public’s present attitude toward risk and technology. Social amplification
or attenuation of risk may occur in several ways. Fearful concern about radiation began in 1955, with the beginning of the
Cold War, when the possibility of a nuclear holocaust appeared very real. Analysis of the data shows that these fears of technology
could have a detrimental effect; they should therefore be investigated and understood.

A new method will be presented which allows the perception of body odors in humans to be studied objectively. The analysis
of body odor‐evoked potentials was used to investigate if and how the human brain is able to differentiate self from non‐self
body odor for the first time. Six subjects (three females) participated in two experimental sessions. In each session, two
body odors (axillary hair) were presented within an olfactory oddball paradigm. One of the odors was collected from the subject
and the other from an odor donor of the same sex. In the first session the subjects' attention was distracted to a secondary
task (passive paradigm), in the second session the subjects were asked to actively differentiate the odors (active paradigm).
For the EEG recordings the odors were presented within a constantly flowing airstream. The results show that the subjects
could hardly differentiate the body odors subjectively. However, it could be demonstrated that the central nervous processing
of one's own odor was faster than the processing of the chemosensory non‐self signal. Moreover, in the active paradigm, the
potentials appeared to be larger when the subjects perceived their own body odor. The conclusion is reached that the measurement
of chemosensory event‐related potentials (CSERP) is the method of choice for the investigation of HLA‐associated body odors.

Autophagy plays a key role in the pathophysiology of schizophrenia as manifested by a 40% decrease in BECN1/Beclin 1 mRNA in postmortem hippocampal tissues relative to controls. This decrease was coupled with the deregulation of the essential ADNP (activity-dependent neuroprotector homeobox), a binding partner of MAP1LC3B/LC3B (microtubule-associated protein 1 light chain 3 β) another major constituent of autophagy. The drug candidate NAP (davunetide), a peptide fragment from ADNP, enhanced the ADNP-LC3B interaction. Parallel genetic studies have linked allelic variation in the gene encoding MAP6/STOP (microtubule-associated protein 6) to schizophrenia, along with altered MAP6/STOP protein expression in the schizophrenic brain and schizophrenic-like behaviors in Map6-deficient mice. In this study, for the first time, we reveal significant decreases in hippocampal Becn1 mRNA and reversal by NAP but not by the antipsychotic clozapine (CLZ) in Map6-deficient (Map6+/−) mice. Normalization of Becn1 expression by NAP was coupled with behavioral protection against hyperlocomotion and cognitive deficits measured in the object recognition test. CLZ reduced hyperlocomotion below control levels and did not significantly affect object recognition. The combination of CLZ and NAP resulted in normalized outcome behaviors. Phase II clinical studies have shown NAP-dependent augmentation of functional activities of daily living coupled with brain protection. The current studies provide a new mechanistic pathway and a novel avenue for drug development. 相似文献
