Biomass and nutrient allocation in sawgrass (Cladium jamaicense Crantz) and cattail (Typha domingensis Pers.) were examined along a nutrient gradient in the Florida Everglades in 1994. This north to south nutrient gradient, created by discharging nutrient-rich agricultural runoff into the northern region of Water Conservatio ea 2A, was represented by three areas (impacted, transitional and reference). Contrasting changes of plant density and size along the gradient were found for communities of both species. For the sawgrass community, more small plants were found in ref ce areas, whereas few large plants were found in impacted areas. In contrast, for the cattail community, bigger plants were found in reference areas, and smaller plants were found in impacted areas. Both species allocated approximately 60% of their total biomass to leaves and 40% to belowground tissues. However, sawgrass biomass allocation to leaves, roots, shoot bases and rhizomes (65%, 19%, 11%, and 5%, respectively) was similar among the three areas. In contrast, cattail plants growing in referen reas showed higher root allocation (27.3%), but lower leaf allocation (51.1%) than those growing in impacted areas (14.6% and 65.8% for root and leaf allocation, respectively). Cattail had higher phosphorus concentrations than sawgrass in tissues associated with growth functions (leaves, roots, and rhizomes). In contrast, sawgrass had higher phosphorus and nitrogen concentrations than cattail in tissues primarily associated with resource storage (shoot bases). From impacted to reference areas, for sawgrass, there was a decrease of leaf TP from 605 to 248 (mg/kg), root TP from 698 to 181 (mg/kg), rhizome TP from 1,139 to 142 (mg/kg), and shoot base TP from 5,412 to 400 to (mg/kg). For cattail, leaf TP decreased from 1,175 to 556 (mg/kg), root TP de sed from 1,100 to 798 (mg/kg), rhizome TP decreased from 1390 to 380 (mg/kg), and shoot base TP decreased from 2,990 to 433 (mg/kg). N/P ratios of sawgrass in reference areas were 27, 63, 38, and 50 for leaves, roots, rhizomes, and shoot bases, respectively, whereas in impacted areas they were 11, 21, 6, and 2, respectively. The greatest TP storage was found in impacted areas. Differences in seed output, seed number, and mean seed weight were found for both species as well. Each cattail flower stalk duced approximately 105 tiny seeds (0.048 ± 0.001 mg) while each sawgrass flower stalk produced about 103 large seeds (3.13 ± 0.005 mg). These results suggest that phosphorus is a limiting resource in the Everglades and that the two species have different life history strategies. These data provide an ecological basis for making informed management and planning decisions to protect and restore the Everglades.  相似文献

 Leaf features were examined in three Quercus species (Q. coccifera, Q. ilex and Q. faginea) along a steep rainfall gradient in NE Spain. The analyzed leaf traits were area, thickness, density, specific mass, leaf concentration of nitrogen, phosphorous, lignin, cellulose and hemicellulose, both on a dry weight basis (Nw, Pw, Lw, Cw, Hw) and on an area basis (Na, Pa, La, Ca, Ha). These traits were regressed against annual precipitation and correlated with each other, revealing different response patterns in the three species. Q. faginea, a deciduous tree, did not show any significant correlation with rainfall. In Q. coccifera, an evergreen shrub, Nw, Na, Lw, La and Ca increased with higher annual rainfall, while Hw decreased. In Q. ilex, an evergreen tree, leaf area, Pw and Lw increased with precipitation, whereas specific leaf mass, thickness and Ha showed the reverse response. Correlations between the leaf features revealed that specific mass variation in Q. faginea and Q. coccifera could be explained by changes in leaf density, while in Q. ilex specific leaf mass was correlated with thickness. Specific leaf mass in the three species appeared positively correlated with all the chemical components on a leaf area basis except with lignin in Q. ilex and with P in Q. ilex and Q. faginea. In these two tree species Pw showed a negative correlation with specific leaf mass. It is suggested that each species has a different mechanism to cope with water shortage which is to a great extent related to its structure as a whole, and to its habit. The uptake kinetics of ammonium and phosphate by Gracilaria tikvahiae McLachlan were studied under field conditions. Seaweeds, pulse fed once a week for 6 h over a 4-week period, had maximum uptake rates of 19 μmol·g fwt?1·h?1 for ammonium and 0.28 μmol·g fwt?1·h?1 for phosphate. For both nutrients there was a positive linear correlation between uptake rate (v) and concentration (S) over the entire range of concentration tested. In a nutrient depletion experiment, the phosphate uptake curve determined over a wide range of concentrations consisted of two stages of saturation at low concentrations, and a linear phase at high concentrations. Ash free dry weight, chlorophyll a, phycoerythrin, and protein content were higher in pulse fed plants than in control plants receiving no nutrient additions, while the reverse held true for carbohydrate contents and the C/N ratios. The C/N ratio inversely correlated with ammonium and phosphate uptake rate as well as protein and phycoerythrin content, and positively with carbohydrate content.  相似文献

Two-yr-old Scots pine ( Pinus sylvestris ) seedlings were grown in sand culture for 1 yr with a generous supply of a balanced nutrient solution. Trees were repotted into clean sand in February 1998 and given either a reduced or adequate nutrient supply containing enriched 15N, 41K and 26Mg to label nutrient uptake during spring 1998. Trees doubled their biomass during the experiment. Whole-tree net photosynthesis was reduced by 43% after 95 d in trees that received the lower nutrient supply ( P < 0.001), although differences in biomass between the two treatments were less pronounced. Remobilization contributed 83, 82 and 52% of the N, K and Mg, respectively, used to support growth of new tissues in trees that received reduced nutrient supply. Those receiving the higher nutrient supply still obtained 44–59% of nutrients used for spring growth of new tissues from remobilization. Current nutrient supply had no significant effect on the amount of N or Mg remobilized to new tissues but K remobilization was less in trees that received the lower nutrient supply ( P = 0.025). The importance of remobilization in young trees and problems associated with quantifying internal cycling of nutrients are discussed.  相似文献

Insect parasitoids lay their eggs in arthropods. Some parasitoid species not only use their arthropod host for oviposition but also for feeding. Host feeding provides nutrients to the adult female parasitoid. However, in many species, host feeding destroys an opportunity to oviposit. For parasitoids that attack Homoptera, honeydew is a nutrient‐rich alternative that can be directly imbibed from the host anus without injuring the host. A recent study showed that feeding on host‐derived honeydew can be an advantageous alternative in terms of egg quantity and longevity. Here we explore the conditions under which destructive host feeding can provide an advantage over feeding on honeydew. For 5 days, Encarsia formosa Gahan (Hymenoptera: Aphelinidae) parasitoids were allowed daily up to 3 h to oviposit until host feeding was attempted. Host feedings were either prevented or allowed and parasitoids had ad libitum access to honeydew between foraging bouts. Even in the presence of honeydew, parasitoids allowed to host feed laid more eggs per hour of foraging per host‐feeding attempt than parasitoids that were prevented from host feeding. The higher egg‐laying rate was not compromised by survival or by change in egg volume over time. In conclusion, host feeding can provide an advantage over feeding on honeydew. This applies most likely under conditions of high host density or low extrinsic mortality of adult parasitoids, when alternative food sources cannot supply enough nutrients to prevent egg limitation. Savannah are ecosystems in which mineral nitrogen is considered as a limiting factor for plant productivity. They are heterogeneous and spatially structured in patches, or islands, where mineral nitrogen content is concentrated. Among the soil macrofauna, termites of the Macrotermitinae subfamily are major determinants of soil heterogeneity through the biogenic underground nest structures (fungus‐comb chambers) they produce. To study the role of the heterogeneity created by termites on Pennisetum pedicellatum, an herbaceous grass species was grown in greenhouse. This was carried out using an homogeneous soil poor in mineral nitrogen, and an heterogeneous soil with patch, made of (i) Ancistrotermes cavithorax fungus‐comb chamber wall and (ii) soil with the same mineral nitrogen content as the termite handled soil. Plants exhibited a better growth on patch of termite‐modified soil whereas no significant differences were shown with the supply of mineral nitrogen. The presence of fungus‐comb chamber wall material resulted in an increase of fine root biomass and root/shoot ratio. We conclude that termites, through their building activities, may create nutrient patches available to grasses. Concurrently, our data illustrate that the higher mineral nitrogen content in termite‐built structures is not the only factor responsible for plant growth.  相似文献

This presentation will examine the impact of increased N mobilization on the global N cycle by contrasting N distribution in the late-19th century with those of the late-20th century. 高山林线是郁闭森林与高山植被之间的分布界限,作为重要的生态过渡带,对全球和区域性气候变化的反应极为敏感,被认为是气候变化的理想监测器.高山林线研究从最初的形态描述到林线成因假说都是为了寻找高山林线形成的原因.迄今出现的高山林线成因假说都能够在局地尺度解释高山林线成因,但仍然缺乏可以普遍解释全球高山林线现象的假说.温度是林线分布的限制因子,低温限制了林线树种的生存及生长,但是低温影响了哪一个生化过程仍不明确,其影响机理还需进一步探讨.本文对高山林线形成机理,特别是对低温对高山林线植物光合特性、养分特征、非结构性碳水化合物和抗氧化系统的影响等研究进展进行综述,并提出了未来林线研究应该关注的问题.  相似文献

对伊犁河谷野果林20个群落60个样方土壤及环境因子调查取样,研究了野果林0~10和10~20 cm土层土壤有机碳(C)、全氮(N)、全磷(P)及全钾(K)的化学计量特征及其影响因素.结果表明: 伊犁野果林0~10 cm土层土壤C、N、P、K含量分别为73.15、7.00、1.14和14.74 g·kg-1,C:N、C:P、C:K、N:P、N:K、P:K分别为10.37、62.73、5.05、6.05、0.48和0.08;除K和C:N外,0~10 cm土层均显著高于10~20 cm土层.P、K、C:N及P:K具有较高的稳定性(CV=8%~24%),其他指标具中等变异性(CV=28%~46%).土壤养分含量及化学计量比在不同取样地点、不同群落类型及不同坡向间均有显著差异.除C、N之间为幂函数关系外,土壤养分含量及其与化学计量比之间均为二次函数关系,体现了土壤养分化学计量特征之间的非线性耦合特征.坡向、降水量及温度是野果林土壤化学计量特征的主要影响因子.  相似文献

选择不同供钾能力的烟-稻轮作区稻田,研究了烟杆还田对水稻产量、钾素吸收利用的影响及其替代钾肥的效果.结果表明: 烟杆还田(2250 kg·hm-2)和施钾肥(K2O 75 kg·hm-2)均能增加水稻产量和地上部钾素的累积量,其中烟杆还田配施钾肥的增幅最大,低钾(土壤速效钾含量<100 mg·kg-1)、中钾(土壤速效钾含量100~150 mg·kg-1)和高钾(土壤速效钾含量>150 mg·kg-1)土壤的水稻分别增产13.3%、17.1%和13.5%.烟杆还田(St+NP)可以提高钾素吸收利用率和农学效率.但在水稻当前推荐施肥量(75 kg·hm-2)条件下,烟杆还田配施钾肥(St+NPK)对钾肥(素)吸收利用率和农学效率无显著影响,说明当前推荐施钾量可能偏高.通过对烟杆还田替代钾肥的计算,发现还田烟杆可以替代10%~22%的化肥钾(K2O),烟后晚稻在烟杆还田时钾肥施用可以减少7.2~16.5 kg·hm-2.因此,在烟杆还田条件下,高钾田块可减少化学钾肥的施用,而中钾和低钾田块为稳定水稻产量和维持土壤钾素平衡,则应保证目前推荐钾肥量的投入.  相似文献
