Animals of many species prefer some partners over others. Discriminating among potential mates causes strong sexual selection that shapes characters and behaviors. In bushcrickets the sexes shows different latencies to remate due to differences in investment in production of the nuptial gift by males and the induced refractory period in females. We conducted experiments with the Australian bushcricket Kawanaphila mirla to test the variation in male mating success by female choice. Male remating intervals under unlimited access to food and mates were around two days, whereas most females did not remate within 12 days. Males had therefore a much shorter “time-out” from mating than females. The adult sex ratio from field samples was near to 1:1. Consequently, the OSR was male-biased with more males than females ready to mate. This male-biased OSR led to mating competition in males and choosiness in females. In a field enclosure with unlimited supply of receptive females the number of matings varied widely between males, with twenty percent of males neglected by the females. The number of matings within this enclosure was neither related to male size nor to song characters, recorded previously in the lab. However, the number of matings by individual males was positively correlated to the size of their spermatophore producing accessory gland. Females appear to prefer males with a large nutritive donation, thereby receiving a direct fitness benefit.  相似文献

We review recent results obtained from simple individual-based models of biological competition in which birth and death rates of an organism depend on the presence of other competing organisms close to it. In addition the individuals perform random walks of different types (Gaussian diffusion and Lévy flights). We focus on how competition and random motions affect each other, from which spatial instabilities and extinctions arise. Under suitable conditions, competitive interactions lead to clustering of individuals and periodic pattern formation. Random motion has a homogenizing effect and then delays this clustering instability. When individuals from species differing in their random walk characteristics are allowed to compete together, the ones with a tendency to form narrower clusters get a competitive advantage over the others. Mean-field deterministic equations are analyzed and compared with the outcome of the individual-based simulations.  相似文献

In 1989, 313 foraging flights of common terns in the Wadden Sea were radio-tracked. The feeding trips lasted on average 115 min covering about 30 km per flight. Completely tracked flights had a mean radius of 6.3 km. The terns preferred distinct foraging areas in the Wadden Sea. These were visited at site-specific phases of the tidal cycle resulting in a temporal and spatial pattern of foraging, caused by the site-specific and tide-related fluctuations of food availability.Supported by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft  相似文献

In mating systems that are characterized by resource-dependentmale behavior like nuptial feeding, food limitation obviouslyplays a major role in male performance. In Panorpa vulgaris(Mecoptera: Panorpidae), the ability to produce nuptial giftshas major fitness consequences as the number of gifts determinescopulation duration, which then determines the number of eggsfertilized by a given male. In the present study, we are ableto show that males of P. vulgaris were limited in their productionof salivary secretions. The number of saliva secretions maleswere able to produce declined in successive matings. Moreover,males of nutritionally high status produced more gifts thanthose of nutritionally low status. The proximate factor determiningmale saliva secretion was the development of the salivary gland,which in turn depended on the amount of food a male could access.The degree of male mating effort corresponded to the size ofthe salivary gland, yet while absolute investment increasedwith gland size, the relative investment decreased. Females of most animal taxa mate with several males during theirlifespan. Yet our understanding of the ultimate causes of polyandryis incomplete. For example, it is not clear if and in what sensefemale mating rates are optimal. Most female insects are thoughtto maximize their fitness by mating at an intermediate rate,but it has been suggested that two alternative fitness peaksmay be observed if multiple costs and benefits interact in determiningthe relationship between mating rate and fitness. We studiedthe relationship between female fitness and mating rate in thebean weevil, Callosobruchus maculatus (Coleoptera: Bruchidae),a species in which several distinct direct effects of matingto females have been reported. Our results show that femalefitness, measured as lifetime offspring production, is lowestat an intermediate mating rate. We suggest that this patternis the result of multiple direct benefits to mating (e.g., spermreplenishment and hydration/nutrition effects) in combinationwith significant direct costs to mating (e.g., injury from malegenitalia). Females mating at low rates may efficiently minimizethe costs of mating, whereas females mating at high rates insteadmay maximize the benefits of mating. If common, the existenceof bimodal relationships between female mating rate and fitnessmay help explain the large intra- and interspecific variationin the degree of polyandry often seen in insects.  相似文献

Several hypotheses have been proposed to explain the evolutionof polyandry in species that provide nuptial gifts. When nuptialgifts are in the form of nutritional elements in the ejaculateand ejaculate size is correlated with male body size, femalescan accrue both direct (nutritional) and indirect (genetic)benefits from multiple mating. We examined remating decisionsin females of the seed beetle Stator limbatus and, using pathanalysis, examined the effects of male body size on the sizeof his ejaculate, the amount of ejaculate that was successfullytransferred to females, and the overall effect of these variableson female fecundity. Larger males produced larger ejaculatesand consequently transferred a larger ejaculate to females,but the effects on female fecundity differed between the females'first and second mates. Both larger first and second males wereable to transfer more of their ejaculate to females than weresmaller males. Both the total amount of ejaculate transferredby these males and polyandry (number of matings) were positivelycorrelated to female fecundity independently of each other.However, larger second males were more successful at stimulatingfemale fecundity independently of how much ejaculate they transferred.We also provide evidence that females are choosy during theirsecond mating opportunity. Both female choosiness and higherfemale investment after mating with larger second males suggestthat females may benefit from both direct and indirect effectsfrom multiple mating. We also conclude that male body size isunder both directional fecundity selection and directional sexualselection.  相似文献

The genetic basis of traits that are under sexual selection and that are involved in recognizing conspecific mates is poorly known, even in systems in which the phenotypic basis of these traits has been well studied. In the present study, we investigate genetic and environmental influences on nuptial colour, which plays important roles in sexual selection and sexual isolation in species pairs of limnetic and benthic threespine sticklebacks ( Gasterosteus aculeatus species complex). Previous work demonstrated that colour differences among species correlate to differences in the ambient light prevalent in their mating habitat. Red fish are found in clear water and black fish in red-shifted habitats. We used a paternal half-sib split-clutch design to investigate the genetic and environmental basis of nuptial colour. We found genetic differences between a red and a black stickleback population in the expression of both red and black nuptial colour. In addition, the light environment influenced colour expression, and genotype by environment interactions were also present. We found evidence for both phenotypic and genetic correlations between our colour traits; some of these correlations are in opposite directions for our red and black populations. We report on a simultaneous nuptial flight of ants of two sympatric ponerine species, Pachycondyla impressa and P. fauveli, on the top of Huayna Picchu (2700 m), Peru. After flying in and landing on the flat, hare rocks of the summit, the conspecific sexuals approached, antennated and mated without any previous female calling behaviour. During one hour of observation, the number of approximately 30 ♂ ♂ and ♀ ♀ Pachycondyla impressa and 70–86 of P. fauveli on the site remained constant because of individuals continuously arriving and leaving. Although nuptial flight seems to be the most common type of mating system in ants, this is one of the very few reports on the occurrence of this behaviour in ponerine species.  相似文献

In species where females preferentially select the most colourful males, males may strategically invest in courtship and nuptial colour according to the presence of rivals. In this experimental study, we tested this in the three‐spined stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus) in which mature males exhibit carotenoid‐based red coloration to attract mates and defend their territories against male competitors. We challenged experimental males with either a red‐ornamented dummy male or a non‐ornamented dummy for five min per day in six‐d experimental trial, which was repeated twice during the breeding season. We found that the males presented with a coloured rival exhibited more frequent courtship behaviours (i.e. fanning and gluing) to females than those presented with a non‐coloured intruder during the second experimental trial. At the end of each trial, the experimental males also showed a significantly larger area of red coloration in the presence of a coloured intruder. Our findings suggest that male sticklebacks regulate mating effort according to the presence of competitive rivals by increasing their investment in costly signals when successful mating and territory defence is at risk.  相似文献
