Measuring the number of co-dominants in ecological communities   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
We suggest a concept that allows the objective determination of the number of co-dominants in a community. We define co-dominants as a subset of species that are more abundant and more uniformly distributed than other species in a given sample. We compare the sample with a model community and use Simpsons diversity index to estimate the apparent number of co-dominants. Dominant species determined in this way are responsible for 70–90% of the total measure of abundance in the sample. The statistical significance of the apparent number of co-dominants may be assessed by a randomization test.  相似文献

Dominance relationships of female sooty mangabeys have thus far been studied exclusively in captive groups. In captivity, adult females form a stable linear hierarchy as would be expected in species exhibiting strong contest competition. However, the same individuals do not exhibit other aspects of behavior that would be expected where contest competition occurs. For example, they show no kin‐based alliances leading to hierarchies in which the members of each matriline occupy adjacent ranks. The goal of this study was to provide the first data on dominance relationships of sooty mangabey females in their natural environment in the Taï National Park, Ivory Coast. In our study group, adult females formed a linear dominance hierarchy. Aggression over food increased in food patches, as would be expected for species that experience contest competition. Many lemur species are characterized by some form of female dominance, ranging from female feeding priority to complete female dominance, although this is a rare trait in primates and other mammals. The status of the Milne-Edwards' sifaka (Propithecus diadema edwardsi), a diurnal lemur, is ambiguous. Some short-term studies have found little or no aggression. The aim of the current, long-term study was to quantify the intersexual-dominance patterns of this sifaka. The distribution, outcome, and context of aggressive interactions were studied in four groups of wild sifakas. The majority of intersexual aggressive interactions were decided, with the loser expressing submissive behavior. Intersexual aggressive interactions occurred in all social contexts, and within all social contexts the females won the vast majority (92.7-96.0%) of aggressive interactions. While aggression rates were low (0.22/hr), this evidence suggests female dominance. We propose that female dominance exists because it provides a fitness advantage to both males and females.  相似文献

Infant handling has been documented in numerous species. Among cercopithecines, interaction motivations are reported to range from aunting to kidnapping; these interactions are often distressful for both mother and infant. Here we examine handling by adult female yellow baboons (Papio cynocephalus cynocephalus) at the Tana River National Primate Reserve, Kenya, using a relatively new, computer-intensive statistical approach of permutation/randomization tests to deal with repeated measures effects and a skewed sample. We hypothesized 1) a tendency for handlers to handle the infants of females ranked similarly or lower than themselves, and 2) more successful infant handling by higher-ranked females, particularly with very young infants. We collected focal data on 23 females (11 mother-infant pairs) over an 11-mo period, with a total of 303 attempted and/or successful "handles" utilized in the permutation analyses. The general patterns apparent in the data seemed to support our hypotheses. However, the permutation tests showed that while females are somewhat more likely to attempt to handle the infants of females ranked "same or lower" than themselves, lower-ranked females are able to prevent more than three-fourths of the attempted interactions, and there is no statistically significant trend for females to successfully handle these infants. Further refinement of the analyses showed no significant tendencies for females to handle those infants ranked "lower" or "immediately lower" than themselves, casting doubt on the significant finding for "same or lower" attempts. Further, there was no significant effect for higher-ranked females to successfully handle an infant during its first month. Thus, rank does not seem to offer any privileges in terms of handling an infant in this population. We believe the permutation tests are an effective way to analyze repeated measures data and offer a more sensitive analysis tool for determining true significance.  相似文献

Primary stability is recognised as an important determinant in the aseptic loosening failure process of cementless implants. An accurate evaluation of the bone–implant relative micromotion is becoming important both in pre-clinical and clinical studies. If the biological threshold for micro-movements is in the range 100–200 μm then, in order to be discriminative, any method used to evaluate the primary stability should have an accuracy of 10–20 μm or better. Additionally, such method should also be able to report the relative micromotion at each point of the interface. None of the available experimental methods satisfies both requirements. Aim of the present study is to verify if any of the current finite element modelling techniques is sufficiently accurate in predicting the primary stability of a cementless prosthesis to be used to decide whether the micromotion may or may not jeopardise the implant osseointegration. The primary stability of an anatomic cementless stem, as measured in vitro, was used as a benchmark problem to comparatively evaluate different contact modelling techniques. Frictionless contact, frictional contact and press-fitted frictional contact conditions were modelled using alternatively node-to-node, node-to-face and face-to-face contact elements. The model based on face-to-face contact elements accounting for frictional contact and initial press-fit was able to predict the micromotion measured experimentally with an average (RMS) error of 10 μm and a peak error of 14 μm. All the other models presented errors higher than 20 μm assumed in the present study as an accuracy threshold.  相似文献

The hormonal regulation of axillary bud growth in Arabidopsis   总被引:11,自引:0,他引:11  
Apically derived auxin has long been known to inhibit lateral bud growth, but since it appears not to enter the bud, it has been proposed that its inhibitory effect is mediated by a second messenger. Candidates include the plant hormones ethylene, cytokinin and abscisic acid. We have developed a new assay to study this phenomenon using the model plant Arabidopsis. The assay allows study of the effects of both apical and basal hormone applications on the growth of buds on excised nodal sections. We have shown that apical auxin can inhibit the growth of small buds, but larger buds were found to have lost competence to respond. We have used the assay with nodes from wild-type and hormone-signalling mutants to test the role of ethylene, cytokinin and abscisic acid in bud inhibition by apical auxin. Our data eliminate ethylene as a second messenger for auxin-mediated bud inhibition. Similarly, abscisic acid signalling is not to be required for auxin action, although basally applied abscisic can enhance inhibition by apical auxin and apically applied abscisic acid can reduce it. By contrast, basally applied cytokinin was found to release lateral buds from inhibition by apical auxin, while apically applied cytokinin dramatically increased the duration of inhibition. These results are consistent with cytokinin acting independently to regulate bud growth, rather than as a second messenger for auxin. However, in the absence of cytokinin-signalling mutants, a role for cytokinin as a second messenger for auxin cannot be ruled out.  相似文献

Dominance competition among males of the same group is characteristic for most primates including humans, with the outcome—rank—being positively associated with fitness. However, because we do not observe an evolutionary arms race toward hyperdominance in primate social systems, the evolution of ever more dominating behavior characteristics may be checked by increased costs in fitness to top rank. Empirical evidence for such costs, particularly in humans, however, is almost nonexistent. Here, for the first time, we can demonstrate for a cohort of male humans, military officers, all graduates of the class of 1950 of the U.S. Military Academy, constituting a closed and cohesive social group, that competitive qualities leading to top rank may have a negative effect on fitness.  相似文献
