Acinetobacter baumannii is emerging as a major cause of nosocomial infections particularly in high risk patients. Being resistant to adverse environmental
conditions, it can stay for prolonged periods in the hospital environment. We report an outbreak in the medical oncology ward
where nine patients suspected of bacteraemia were blood culture positive forA. baumannii from the two samples each, one collected through the i.v. cannula and another through the peripheral venous puncture. The
bacteria was also isolated from the environmental sources from the various samples collected. The biotype, antibiogram, cellular
protein profiles on SDS-PAGE and the restriction enzyme analysis patterns of the patient isolates and the environmental isolates
were similar. This points to the environment as a source of infection. With reinforcement of proper barrier nursing and use
of disposable heparine ampoules it was possible to control the outbreak. 相似文献

On July 2009, 5 fly larvae were discovered inside the nose of a 76-year-old female. She was living in Cheonan-si, and in a state of coma due to rupture of an aortic aneurysm. Surgery was performed on the day of admission, and the larvae were found 4 days later. By observing their posterior spiracle, the larvae were identified as Lucilia sericata. Considering the rapid development of this species, the infection was likely acquired during hospitalization. Further investigation on the hospital environment should be needed to know the origin of the infection. 相似文献

Corynebacterium striatum is a potentially pathogenic microorganism
that causes nosocomial outbreaks. However, little is known about its virulence
factors that may contribute to healthcare-associated infections (HAIs). We
investigated the biofilm production on abiotic surfaces of multidrug-resistant (MDR)
and multidrug-susceptible (MDS) strains of C. striatum of
pulsed-field gel electrophoresis types I-MDR, II-MDR, III-MDS and IV-MDS isolated
during a nosocomial outbreak in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The results showed that
C. striatum was able to adhere to hydrophilic and hydrophobic
abiotic surfaces. The C. striatum 1987/I-MDR strain, predominantly
isolated from patients undergoing endotracheal intubation procedures, showed the
greatest ability to adhere to all surfaces. C. striatum bound
fibrinogen to its surface, which contributed to biofilm formation. Scanning electron
microscopy showed the production of mature biofilms on polyurethane catheters by all
pulsotypes. In conclusion, biofilm production may contribute to the establishment of
HAIs caused by C. striatum. 相似文献

Pyrolysis mass spectrometry was used to characterise Staphylococcus aureus isolates from an outbreak of post-operative wound infections on a mixed surgical ward. The PyMS results were compared with those of phage typing. Both suggested a single strain of S. aureus, of phage type 3C, 55,71, was responsible for six of the 13 wound infections. PyMS differentiated an isolate from a member of staff of similar phage type to the epidemic strain, which had previously been considered to be the point source for the outbreak. PyMS is a rapid and inexpensive technique for investigating nosocomial outbreaks, including those caused by S. aureus and, in this instance, was more discriminatory than phage typing. 相似文献
