In this paper we study a mathematical model of competition between two species of microorganisms for a single limiting nutrient in a laboratory device called a gradostat. A gradostat consists of several (we consider only two) chemostats (CSTR's) connected together so that material can flow between the vessels in such a way that a nutrient gradient is established. Our model is a slightly modified version of one considered recently by Jäger et al. [3], in that the rate of exchange of material between the two vessels (the communication rate) is allowed to differ from the dilution rate. The outcome of competition turns out to be surprisingly sensitive to variation of the communication rate. We identify several coexistence regimes in parameter space and describe a method for obtaining operating diagrams for given pairs of competing microorganisms.Research supported in part by NSF Grant DMS 8521605  相似文献

It is often reported that an animal with spotty coat markings on its body has a tail with stripe-shaped pattern. In other various biological and chemical phenomena in/on cylinder-like domains, longitudinally periodic band patterns are observed much more often than the other non-uniform patterns. This paper mathematically explains these observations by proving that, in/on a long and narrow cylinder-like domain, any solution of reaction-diffusion system asymptotically loses its spatial dependence in the transectional/circumferential direction.  相似文献

Realized heritabilities were estimated for the character of phenthoate resistance in two local strains of the diamond-back moth, Plutella xylostella L. (Lepidoptera: Yponomeutidae), by performing artificial laboratory selection for resistance and susceptibility to phenthoate. Heritability estimates indicated that such traits are moderately heritable ( 2=0.42 and 0.41 in the resistant selection and 2=0.31 and 0.21 in the susceptible selection), and give an experimental basis accounting for rapid evolutionary changes of phenthoate resistance observed in field populations of this insect.The observed changes in variances of phenthoate susceptibility are discussed in relation to the additive genetic variance eliminated by directional selection. The explanation stresses the importance on the underlying genetic system.
Résumé L'héritabilité de la résistance au phenthoate obtenue chez deux souches locales de P. xylostella L. (Lep.; Yponomeutidae) a été calculée en procédant au laboratoire à des sélections artificielles pour la résistance et pour la sensibilité à cet insecticide. Les calculs de l'héritabilité ont montré que de tels caractères sont moyennement héritables ( 2=0,42 et 0,41 lors de la sélection pour la résistance, et 2=0,31 et 0,21 lors de la sélection pour la sensibilité), et ont fourni la base expérimentale rendant compte des changements évolutifs rapides observés pour la résistance au phenthoate chez des populations naturelles de cet insecte.Les changements observés de la variance de la sensibilité au phenthoate sont discutés en fonction de la variance génétique additive éliminée par la sélection orientée. L'explication insiste sur l'importance du système génétique souligné.

Four aphid species (Aphis fabae cirsiiacanthoidis Scop., Brachycaudus cardui (L.), Capitophorus carduinus Walker and Uroleucon cirsii (L.)) feed on the creeping thistle Cirsium arvense. They utilize different parts of their host plant and at different times. A wide niche is typical of C. carduinus and U. cirsii, whereas A. f. crisiiacanthoidis and B. cardui, show narrower but overlapping niches. Morphological features such as stylet length and body size as well as colony size and density are associated with the choice of feeding site. C. carduinus, the smallest species with the shortest stylets was able to use leaf veins and lamina, while the other species mainly used the stem and peduncles. Within this group, A. f. cirsiiacanthoidis and B. cardui are restricted to the upper part of the stem because of their short stylets, but adult U. cirsii, the species with the longest stylets, can also feed at the base of the stem.

Zusammenfassung An der Ackerkratzdistel leben vier Blattlausarten (Aphis fabae cirsiiacanthoidis Scop., Brachycaudus cardui (L.), Capitophorus carduinus Walker und Uroleucon cirsii (L.)), die im Verlauf der Vegetationsperiode verschiedene Strukturen ihrer Wirtspflanze nutzen. Eine breite Nische ist für U. cirsii und C. carduinus typisch, während A. f. cirsiiacanthoidis und B. cardui engere Nischen besitzen, die sich nahezu überlappen. Die Nahrungsplatzwahl wird sowohl durch morphologische Parameter wie Stilettlänge und Körpergewicht als auch durch Koloniegröe und Dispersion innerhalb der Kolonie beeinflut. Die kleinste Art, C. carduinus, die auch das kürzeste Stilett besitzt, ist in der Lage, an Blattadern und auf der Blattspreite zu saugen. Die anderen Arten bevorzugen Stengel, Seitenstengel und Blütenstiele. Innerhalb dieser Gruppe können A. f. cirsiiacanthoidis und C. carduinus wegen ihrer kürzeren Stilette nur am oberen Teil des Stengels saugen, während adulte U. cirsii aufgrund ihrer längeren Stilette auch an der Stengelbasis leben können.

A glutathione transferase from human mononuclear leukocytes with a high activity towardtrans-stilbene oxide (GT-tSBO) has been studied in liver and blood from fetus and adults and in blood from neonates. Using starch gel electrophoresis, different phenotypes of GST1 have been determined, GST1 0, GST1 1, and GST1 2. As judged from activity measurements and the fact that only those individuals who express the null allele of GST1, the GST1 0, which has a low activity towardtrans-stilbene oxide, it is concluded that the hepatic transferase GST1 is identical to GT-tSBO, as well as to hepatic transferase μ. In addition, it has been shown that the different genotypes of GST1 1 (GST1 1-1, GST1 1-0) and GST1 2 (GST1 2-2, GST1 2-0) can be separated by measuring the GT-tSBO activity in whole blood from the same individual. It is also demonstrated that GT-tSBO activity is much lower in fetal liver, approximately 10 times, compared with adult liver, while this activity seems to be unchanged in the blood from fetus and adults, as well as in neonates.  相似文献

Biological sensors are becoming more important to monitor the quality of the aquatic environment. In this paper the valve movement response of freshwater (Dreissena polymorpha) and marine (Mytilus edulis) mussels is presented as a tool in monitoring studies. Examples of various methods for data storage and data treatment are presented, elucidating easier operation and lower detection limits. Several applications are mentioned, including an early warning system based on this valve movement response of mussels.  相似文献

The experiment was conducted to investigate the human thermoregulatory responses during rest, exercise and recovery atT a 20°C and 60% R.H. under the conditions of wearing two different types of clothing. Six healthy men wore two types of clothing: one covering the whole body area except the head (Type A, weight 1656 g), and the other covering only the trunk, upper arms and thighs (Type B, weight 996 g). The level of rectal temperature was kept significantly higher in Type B than in Type A during rest and recovery. The increased and decreased rates of rectal temperature during exercise and recovery were significantly greater in Type A than in Type B, respectively. These findings are discussed from the viewpoint of the differences of skin temperatures of the extremities between Type A and Type B.  相似文献

Summary Because seed size is often associated with survival and reproduction in plant populations, genetic variation for seed size may be reduced or eliminated by natural selection. To test this hypothesis we assessed genetic sources of variation in seed size in a population ofPhlox drummondii to determine whether genetic differences among seeds influence the size they attain. A diallel cross among 12 plants from a population at Bastrop, Texas, USA allowed us to partition variance in the mass of seeds among several genetic and parental effects. We found no evidence of additive genetic variance or dominance genetic variance for seed mass in the contribution of plants to their offspring. Extranuclear maternal effects accounted for 56% of the variance in seed mass. A small interaction was observed between seed genotype and maternal plant. Results of this study support theory that predicts little genetic variation for traits associated with fitness.  相似文献

Summary This paper reports the occurrence of an accumulation of lethally altered lymphocytes in the subcapsular sinus of a compartment or compartments of some lymph nodes, an unusual feature best developed in nodes of the mesenteric site in aging athymic animals. Many of these cells are rod-like. In other compartments, similar lymphocytes occurred at various depths in the nodal parenchyma. This was accompanied by the disappearance of a compartment's populations of normal lymphoid cells. The observations reveal that lymphocytes, altered in a tissue, may reach the subcapsular sinus of the draining node compartment and migrate into its parenchyma which then undergoes atrophy. Summary The caudal spinal cord of the coho salmon was investigated by means of immunocytochemistry using antisera against serotonin, urotensin I, urotensin II, somatostatin and a urea-extract of bovine Reissner's fiber (AFRU). Populations of serotonin-immunoreactive (IR) neurons were found rostral and dorsal to the urophysis in close spatial association with caudal secretory neurons. Thick, smooth serotonin-IR processes extended toward the external surface of the spinal cord where they displayed conspicuous terminal dilatations. Thin, beaded serotonin-IR fibers appeared to innervate populations of caudal secretory and somatostatin-IR cerebrospinal fluid-contacting neurons. Most caudal neurosecretory cells displayed both urotensin I and urotensin II immunoreactivities; only a minority reacted exclusively with either urotensin I or urotensin II antisera. Urotensin II-IR and somatostatin-IR cerebrospinal fluid (CSF)-contacting neurons were found as an integral component of the central canal wall in the caudal spinal cord and filum terminale; their dendritic processes appeared to contact Reissner's fiber, which displayed a weak AFRU-immunoreactivity while inside the central canal, but became strongly reactive in the interior of the terminal ventricle as it formed the massa caudalis. The distribution of serotoninergic processes points to a regulatory role in the function of caudal secretory and CSF-contacting neurons and to a putative serotonin release into the subarachnoid space and/or meningeal vasculature.
