Stomatal control of transpiration from a developing sugarcane canopy   总被引:2,自引:2,他引:0
Abstract. Stomatal conductance of single leaves and transpiration from an entire sugarcane (Saccharum spp. hybrid) canopy were measured simultaneously using independent techniques. Stomatal and environmental controls of transpiration were assessed at three stages of canopy development, corresponding to leaf area indices (L) of 2.2, 3.6 and 5.6. Leaf and canopy boundary layers impeded transport of transpired water vapour away from the canopy, causing humidity around the leaves to find its own value through local equilibration rather than a value determined by the humidity of the bulk air mass above the canopy. This tended to uncouple transpiration from direct stomatal control, so that transpiration predicted from measurement of stomatal conductance and leaf-to-air vapour pressure differences was increasingly overestimated as the reference point for ambient vapour pressure measurement was moved farther from the leaf and into the bulk air. The partitioning of control between net radiation and stomata was expressed as a dimensionless decoupling coefficent ranging from zero to 1.0. When the stomatal aperture was near its maximum this coefficient was approximately 0.9, indicating that small reductions in stomatal aperture would have had little effect on canopy transpiration. Maximum rates of transpiration were, however, limited by large adjustments in maximum stomatal conductance during canopy development. The product of maximum stomatal conductance and L. a potential total canopy conductance in the absence of boundary layer effects, remained constant as L increased. Similarly, maximum canopy conductance, derived from independent micrometeorological measurements, also remained constant over this period. Calculations indicated that combined leaf and canopy boundary layer conductance decreased with increasing L such that the ratio of boundary layer conductance to maximum stomatal conductance remained nearly constant at approximately 0.5. These observations indicated that stomata adjusted to maintain both transpiration and the degree of stomatal control of transpiration constant as canopy development proceeded.  相似文献

Abstract. Xylem sap was collected from individual leaves of intact transpiring lupin plants exposed to increasing concentrations of NaCl by applying pneumatic pressure to the roots. Concentrations of Na+ and Cl in the xylem sap increased linearly with increases in the external NaCl concentration, averaging about 10% of the external concentration. Concentrations of K+ and NO3, the other major inorganic ions in the sap, were constant at about 2.5 and 1.5 mol m−3, respectively. There was no preferential direction of Na + or Cl to either young or old leaves: leaves of all ages received xylem sap having similar concentrations of Na+ and Cl, and transpiration rates (per unit leaf area) were also similar for all leaves. Plants exposed to 120–160 mol m−3 NaCl rapidly developed injury of oldest leaves; when this occurred, the Na+ concentration in the leaflet midrib sap had increased to about 40 mol m−3 and the total solute concentration to 130 osmol m−3. This suggests that uptake of salts from the transpiration stream had fallen behind the rate of delivery to the leaf and that salts were building up in the apoplast.  相似文献

Abstract. Electric-circuit analogue models of the water relations of crassulacean acid metabolism (CAM) succulents such as Agave deserti and Ferocactus acanthodes have predicted diel movement of water between the water-storage parenchyma and the photo-synthetic chlorenchyma. Injection of tritiated water into either tissue in the laboratory confirmed substantial and bidirectional water movements, especially under conditions of wet soil. For A. deserti , water movement from the water-storage parenchyma to the chlorenchyma increased at night as the chlorenchyma osmotic pressure increased. Although nocturnal osmotic pressure increases and transpiration for both species were minimal in the field under dry conditions, diel changes in the deuterium: hydrogen ratio (expressed as ΔD) were similar for the water-storage parenchyma and the chlorenchyma. Such indication of [substantial mixing of water between the tissues over a 24-h cycle was more evident under wet conditions in the field. For A. deserti , ΔD then increased by 32%o from the afternoon to midnight and was essentially identical in the water-storage parenchyma and the chlorenchyma. For F. acanthodes , the diel changes in ΔD were one-third those of A. deserti , and ΔD was always slightly higher for the chlorenchyma than for the water-storage parenchyma, apparently reflecting the lower surface-to-volume ratio of A. deserti. In summary, data obtained using radioactive and stable isotopes strongly supported model predictions concerning diel cycles of internal water distribution for these CAM species.  相似文献

CO2 and water vapour exchange rates of four alpine herbs namely: Rheum emodi, R. moorcroftianum, Megacarpaea polyandra and Rumex nepalensis were studied under field conditions at 3600 m (natural habitat) and 550 m altitudes. The effect of light and temperature on CO2 and water vapour exchange was studied in the plants grown at lower altitude. In R. moorcroftianum and R. nepalensis, the average photosynthesis rates were found to be about three times higher at 550 m as compared to that under their natural habitat. However, in M. polyandra, the CO2 exchange rates were two times higher at 3600 m than at 550 m but in R. emodi, there were virtually no differences at the two altitudes. These results indicate the variations in the CO2 exchange rates are species specific. The change in growth altitude does not affect this process uniformly. The transpiration rates in R. emodi and M. polyandra were found to be very high at 3600 m compared to 550 m and are attributed to overall higher stomatal conductance in plants of these species, grown at higher altitude. The mid-day closure of stomata and therefore, restriction of transpirational losses of water were observed in all the species at 550 m altitude. In addition to the effect of temperature and relative humidity, the data also indicate some endogenous rhythmic control of stomatal conductance. The temperature optima for photosynthesis was close to 30°C in M. polyandra and around 20°C in the rest of the three species. High temperature and high light intensity, as well as low temperature and high light intensity, adversely affect the net rate of photosynthesis in these species. Both light compensation point and dark respiration rate increased with increasing temperature. The effect of light was more prominent on photosynthesis than the effect of temperature, however, on transpiration the effect of temperature was more prominent than the effect of light intensity. No definite trends were found in stomatal conductance with respect to light and temperature. Generally, the stomatal conductance was highest at 20°C.The study reveals that all these species can easily be cultivated at relatively lower altitudes. However, proper agronomical methodology will need to be developed for better yields.  相似文献

The interdependence between changes in growth and water relations after waterlogging was investigated by recording simultaneously growth, transpiration, water potential, turgor, leaf diffusion resistance and abscisic acid content in Phaseolus vulgaris L. cv. bruine Noord-Hollandse. Growth was inhibited immediately after flooding, whereas transpiration decreased gradually to a low level in about three days. The first two days after flooding a small increase in abscisic acid content in the leaves was observed which was accompanied by an increase in diffusion resistance. The increase in abscisic acid content could result from an inhibited export from the leaves. After the first two days a decrease in water potential and turgor was accompanied by a drastic increase in both abscisic acid content and diffusion resistance. This large increase in abscisic acid content occurred before the turgor had reached its minimum value. The change in diffusion resistance kept showing a lag of about one day with the change in abscisic acid content. The possibility is discussed that besides abscisic acid also its metabolite phaseic acid is involved in stomatal closure. After the formation of adventitious roots on the hypocotyl, abscisic acid level, diffusion resistance, water potential and turgor returned to the control values. Transpiration showed a slow recovery from the sixth day after flooding, whereas growth was inhibited for at least nine days. A remarkable similarity exists between our observations on the responses of bean plants to flooding and the well known responses to drought.  相似文献

The gas exchange of 19 widely different warm climate species was observed at different leaf to air vapour pressure deficits (VPD). In all species stomata tended to close as VPD increased resulting in a decrease in net photosynthesis. The absolute reduction in leaf conductance per unit increase in VPD was greatest in those species which had a large leaf conductance at low VPDs. This would be expected even if stomata of all species were equally sensitive. However the percentage reduction in net photosynthesis (used as a measure of the relative sensitivity of stomata of the different species) was also closely related to the maximal conductance at low VPD. Similarily the relative sensitivity of stomata to changes in VPD was closely related to the weighted stomatal density or crowding index. The hypothesis is presented that stomatal closure at different VPDs is related to peristomatal evaporation coupled with a high resistance between the epidermis and the mesophyll and low resistance between the stomatal apparatus and the epidermal cells. This hypothesis is consistent with the greater relative sensitivity of stomata on leaves with a high crowding index. The results and the hypothesis are discussed in the light of selection, for optimal productivity under differing conditions of relative humidity and soil water availablility, by observation of stomatal density and distribution on the two sides of the leaf.Visiting scientist, plant physiologist and research assitant of the Cassava Program  相似文献
