新种“红胫裸蝗”C.rufitibia与C.alajense Misth.

Three new species of Tropodiaptomus from southern Africa are described, Tropodiaptomus zambeziensis, T. bhangazii, and T. capriviensis. Type localities are a rice paddy on the Zambezi river delta, a coastal lake in Zululand, and temporary pools in Bushmanland and the eastern Caprivi in Namibia. Speciation of Tropodiaptomus in the warm inland waters of southern Africa is much more extensive than was formerly realised.

A new species of poecilostomatoid copepod, Ostrincola humesi (Myicolidae), is described, based on specimens collected from the mantle cavity of the rock oyster, Saccostrea cucullata (Born), cultured in the Gulf of Thailand. A close comparison was made between the new species and Ostrincola koe Tanaka with which the new species was previously confused. A key to the nine species of Ostrincola is provided.

A non-pigmented, unicellular alga isolated from the faeces of British anuran tadpoles and which is associated with growth inhibition in these tadpoles, was described and identified using cytological, ultrastructural, nutrient assimilation and immunological studies. The alga possessed all the distinctive morphological features of the genus Prototheca, it grew weakly on Prototheca Isolation Medium (PIM), it required thiamine for continued growth and replication, and it could assimilate the five major substrates used to speciate the protothecans. All of these characteristics, together with previous nucleic acid hybridisation studies, indicated that the microorganism belonged to the genus Prototheca. There are currently five species recognised as valid (Pore, 1985 & 1986): Prototheca zopfii Kruger, 1884, P. wickerhamii Tubaki & Soneda, 1959, P. moriformis Kruger, 1884, P. stagnora Cooke, 1968 and P. ulmea Pore, 1986.The immunology showed that the new species was related to two of the protothecans, but overall it showed that the alga was antigenically distinct from the other protothecans tested in the immunoassay. This, together with its inability to grow strongly on PIM, its ability to assimilate a wide rage of carbon substrates and its ability to mediate growth inhibition in anuran tadpoles, indicated a new species of Prototheca. We therefore propose the name Prototheca richardsi sp. n.

Four fish species,Pollimyrus isidori (Mormyridae),Barbus paludinosus, Labeo forskalii (Cyprinidae), andNemacheilus abyssinicus (Balitoridae), new to the Omo-Turkana basin, were recorded from the Gojeb River, a tributary of the Omo River (south-western Ethiopia). Occurrence of the latter species in the upper reaches of the Blue Nile and of the Omo drainage substantiates the belonging of the upper parts of these water systems to the Abyssinian highlands ichthyofaunal province.

A new species of Boeckella from limnetic samples of Laguna del Diamante, a high lake in the Andes (34°10 S) is described and illustrated. The species is defined by the characters of the male fifth leg: the right two segmented endopod bears four peculiar, short, claw-like spines, the left endopod is a simple finger-like projection. This species is related to B. gibbosa, also a species from the Andes and B. vallentini from Malvinas (Falkland Islands) and other subantarctic islands. It is distinguished from them by diagnostic features of the fifth legs of the male and abdominal structure and fifth legs of the female. Some current views on the features used in the taxonomy of the genus Boeckella are discussed.

A nematode isolated from the termite Reticulitermes flavipes (Koller) was identified and described as a new genus and species, Neosteinernema longicurvicauda. Primary distinguishing characters, by contrast to members of the genus Steinernema, were females having prominent phasmids, a curved tail longer than the body width at the anus, a spiral shape in juvenile-bearing females, and juveniles becoming infective-stage juveniles before emerging from the female; males having prominent phasmids, a digitate tail tip, a characteristic shape of the spicules (foot-shaped with a hump on the dorsal side), and 13-14 pairs of genital papillae, with eight pairs preanal; and infective juveniles having prominent phasmids and a filiform curved tail as long as the esophagus. Adult nematodes are found outside the termite cadaver. Diagnosis of the family Steinernematidae was emended to accommodate the new species.

A new polyclonal antibody was raised against centrin isolated from the flagellate green alga Spermatozopsis similis (Chlorophyta; anti-SSC). It stains by immunofluorescence and immunoelectron microscopy well-known reference systems for centrin like the nucleus–basal body connectors in Chlamydomonas reinhardtii (Chlorophyta) and the system II fibers (rhizoplasts) of Scherffelia dubia (Chlorophyta). In addition, it recognizes in immunoblots a single 20-kDa protein in isolated cytoskeletons of Spermatozopsis similis and Tetraselmis striata (Chlorophyta) as well as purified centrin isolated from Tetraselmis striata. Using this antibody, centrin was localized in whole cells and isolated cytoskeletons of Oxyrrhis marina Dujardin (Dinophyceae) by immunofluorescence and immunogold electron microscopy. In the flagellar apparatus of O. marina, five different structures were antigenic. Four short fibers (connectives 1–4) link the basal bodies to the four major fibrous flagellar roots, which do not cross-react with anti-centrin. The most prominent of the labeled structures (connective 5), a crescent-shaped fiber, extends from the flagellar canal of the transverse flagellum along the base of the tentacle to the flagellar canal of the longitudinal flagellum, interconnecting the distal parts of the microtubular roots/bands in the basal apparatus. For most of its length, it underlies and is connected to a transversely oriented subamphiesmal microtubular band. In immunoblot analyses, anti-SSC recognizes only a single 20-kDa protein in cytoskeletons of O. marina. Functional and phylogenetic aspects of centrin-containing structures in dinoflagellates are discussed.
