ABSTRACT The islands of the Caribbean contain habitat of critical importance to a large number of endemic and resident birds, as well as many overwintering Neotropical migrants, and they rank as a globally outstanding conservation priority ecoregion and biodiversity hotspot. Considerable research from the region has focused on the ecology of permanent resident species, and these studies have had particular significance for threatened species management, especially parrot biology and conservation, but also for tropical community ecology in general. Work by ornithologists in the Caribbean has been instrumental in improving our understanding of the ecology of overwintering Neotropical migrants and in developing long‐term monitoring programs. Although Caribbean‐based studies of birds have resulted in significant contributions in many important areas of ecological research, there is a great need for additional research. Especially needed are studies with application to the management of resident species, and studies of how bird populations may be affected by pathogens, parasites, plants, and other types of biotic interactions. Studies focusing on how bird species and populations are affected by global climate change, and cumulative, landscape‐level changes in land use are also needed. Along with additional research, scientists have an important role to play in building capacity to prepare the next generation of biologists in the region who will need to address mounting challenges related to biodiversity protection. As with many conservation efforts, funding is a critical need for almost all organizations and agencies involved in research, conservation action, and capacity building in the West Indies. 相似文献

Oil palm (Elaies guineensis) plantations are among the fastest growing agroecosystems in the Neotropics, but little is known about how Neotropical birds use oil palm habitats. To better understand the potential value of oil palm as an overwintering habitat for migratory birds, we surveyed birds in oil palm and native forest remnants in Tabasco, Mexico, from 19 December 2017 to 27 March 2018. We collected data on bird abundance and vegetative structure and used generalized linear models and multivariate analysis to assess how oil palm development influenced migrant bird diversity, community assemblages, and abundance. We found that species richness of migratory birds tended to be higher in forest patches than in oil palm, that community assemblages of migratory birds differed between native forest and oil palm plantations, and that differences in migratory bird abundance, and subsequent changes in community assemblages were driven by differences between native forest and oil palm plantations in vegetative structure. The bird community of native forest was characterized by migrant species sensitive to forest loss that forage low in the understory and in the leaf litter, whereas the bird community of oil palm plantations was represented by generalist species that occupy a wider range of foraging niches. Our results suggest that most species of migrant birds responded positively to several forest structural features and that integrating more native trees and increasing the amount of understory vegetation in oil palm plantations may increase the value of working landscapes for migratory birds. 相似文献

Drosophilid communities living in four different physiographical regions of the state of Rio Grande do Sul (27°/34°S; 49.7°/57.5°W), Brazil, were analysed. Ignoring cosmopolitan species, this is about the southern limit of the majority of typically neotropical Drosophila species distribution. Numerical fluctuations of the most frequent species populations from each place were investigated in relation to climatic data and trophic-resource availability. Of the four locations studied, Turvo is remarkable for being an enormous ecological reserve covered with subtropical perennially rainy forest, and for having stable weather conditions. Guaiba, on the other hand, is a more climatically unstable place, with unpredictable and more scarce resources. In Turvo, the community structure is shaped by the dominance of Drosophila willistoni and a low species diversity throughout the year. Low average niche-breadth and niche-overlap indices have also been found at feeding and breeding site levels. Guaíba showed the highest species-diversity levels and was better exploited by D. simulans, a cosmopolitan species with a well-known colonizing capacity. High niche breadth and overlap indices were characteristic for most species at this place. Results are discussed in the light of the communities' species composition and of environmental factors. 相似文献
