We have previously shown that computer simulations of processes that generate selectively advantageous changes together with random duplications and deletions give rise to genomes with many different genes embedded in a large amount of dispensable DNA sequence. We now explore the consequences of neutral changes on the evolution of genomes. We follow the consequences of sequence divergences that are neutral when they occur in dispensable sequences or extra copies of genes present in multigene families. We find that when divergence occurs at about the same frequency as duplication/deletion events, genomes carry repetitive sequences in proportion to their size. Inspection of the genomes as they evolved showed that multigene families were generated by relatively recent duplications of single genes and so would be expected to be highly homogeneous.  相似文献

A number of carbobenzoxy-dipeptide-amides raise the bilayer to hexagonal phase transition temperature of dielaidoylphosphatidylethanolamine (stabilizes the bilayer). The potency of the peptides in stabilizing the bilayer phase is Z-Tyr-Leu-NH2= Z-Gly-Phe-NH2>Z-Ser-Leu-NH2>Z-Gly-Leu-NH2>Z-Gly-Gly-NH2. A linear correlation was found between the respective HPLC retention time parameterk for the peptide and the slope of the bilayer stabilization curve determined with model membranes by differential scanning calorimetry. One dipeptide, Z-Ser-Leu-NH2, reduces measles virus cytopathic effect (CPE) in Vero cells. Because of the large μ mass compared to the electron mass, the muonic X-rays have energies very suitable for standard γ-ray spectroscopy (Ge detectors), so every element is easily recognized. By selecting the primary μ energies appropriately any part of the specimen, also well inside, can be nondestructively investigated. On the other hand, surface layers may be analyzed. Accuracies of quantitative analyses are 1% of the atomic abundance of the element in question in favorite cases. Results on applications in nuclear medicine and surface physics are presented, and ways of improving the muon flux density are discussed.  相似文献

In the preceding paper, an alternative method is described for obtaining information about the reorientational behavior of a fluorophore in a membrane system from frequency domain measurements. To demonstrate this new analysis procedure, we present data for the probe-molecule 1,6-diphenyl-1,3,5-hexatriene (DPH) in l--dimyristoyl- and l--dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (DMPC and DPPC) obtained with two different phase fluorometers: the SLM 4800A Subnanosecond Spectrofluorometer which has only three fixed frequencies available (6, 18 and 30 MHz) and the recently constructed continuously variable multifrequency phasefluorometer (Gratton and Limkeman 1983).It will be shown that reasonable information about the anisotropy behavior of a fluorophore can be obtained even if only three frequencies are used. The phase modulation technique was also used to check the new expression for the anisotropy, r(t), called the general model and introduced by Van der Meer et al. (1984). The parameters P 2, P 4 and D, obtained from the nonlinear least squares fit (Bevington 1969) for this general model, confirm the results from the pulse technique of Ameloot and coworkers (Ameloot et al. 1984; Pottel et al. 1986).  相似文献

Summary A method has been developed which enables the estimation of the plant gene flow parameters p (pollen dispersal), s (seed dispersal) and t (outcrossing rate) from a selection-free continuously structured population in equilibrium. The method uses Wright's F-coefficients and introduces a new F-function which describes the genetic similarity as a function of the spatial distance. The method has been elaborated for wind pollinated plant species but can be modified for insect pollination and for animal species. In practice allozymes will provide for the necessary neutral genetic variation. The more loci used and the more intermediate the gene frequencies, the more reliable the results. For the estimation of p and t together (when the outcrossing rate is not known) at least two chromosomally unlinked loci are required. The method for estimating s depends on whether the plant species is annual or perennial. The mechanism of selfing has been analysed by the explanation of the value of t by three components: population density (d), pollen flow (p) and relative fertilization potential of own pollen (Z). The concepts of neighbourhood size and isolation by distance, developed by Wright, who used a single gene flow parameter , have been extended to the situation which is realistic for seed plants, using all three parameters p, s and t. When p is large with respect to s, s largely determines the value of the neighbourhood size, whereas p is the most dominating factor in isolation by distance. The use of local effective population size and mean gene transport per generation instead of neighbourhood size and neighbourhood area, respectively, is proposed to avoid confusion. Computer simulations have been carried out to check the validity and the reliability of the method. Populations of 200 plants, using two or three loci with intermediate allele frequencies, gave good results in the calculation of p with known value of t and of s and Ne. Summary The most relevant properties of hypercycles were previously studied mainly from a theoretical point of view. We have developed a Monte Carlo method simulating hypercyclic organization to obtain information about the dynamics of this prebiotic organization. Nucleation, growth, and selective properties have been tested and the results obtained are in good agreement with those of the theoretical predictions. The influence of hypercyclic organization of the error threshold has also been studied. As a consequence of the emergence of a hypercycle, the value of this threshold decreases. The amount of this decrease depends on the population size. Moreover, for some interval of quality factor values, either the hypercycle organization or an error catastrophe can be produced, depending on the initial conditions. The influence of these phenomena on both the dynamic behavior and evolutionary advantages of the hypercycle, as well as their decisive roles on genome size, are discussed.Presented at the FEBS Symposium on Genome Organization and Evolution, held in Crete, Greece, September 1–5, 1986  相似文献

The absolute volume of biological objects is often estimated stereologically from an exhaustive set of systematic sections. The usual volume estimator is the sum of the section contents times the distance between sections. For systematic sectioning with a random start, it has been recently shown that is unbiased when m, the ratio between projected object length and section distance, is an integer number (Cruz-Orive 1985). As this quantity is no integer in the real world, we have explored the properties of in the general and realistic situation m . The unbiasedness of under appropriate sampling conditions is demonstrated for the arbitrary compact set in 3 dimensions by a rigorous proof. Exploration of further properties of for the general triaxial ellipsoid leads to a new class of non-elementary real functions with common formal structure which we denote as np-functions. The relative mean square error (CE 2) of in ellipsoids is an oscillating differentiable np-function, which reduces to the known result CE 2= 1/(5m 4) for integer m. As a biological example the absolute volumes of 10 left cardiac ventricles and their internal cavities were estimated from systematic sections. Monte Carlo simulation of replicated systematic sectioning is shown to be improved by using m instead of m . In agreement with the geometric model of ellipsoids with some added shape irregularities, mean empirical CE was proportional to m –1.36 and m–1.73 in the cardiac ventricle and its cavity. The considerable variance reduction by systematic sectioning is shown to be a geometric realization of the principle of antithetic variates.  相似文献

A simple simulation model is described to account for the rates at which plants take up nitrate and reduce it to protein. It is based on the pump and leak principle, with the pump working at a constant rate per unit sap volume provided that there is an adequate concentration of nitrate at the root surface. The rate of leakage is assumed to be proportional to the concentration difference between the inside and the outside of the plant. Nitrogen is removed from the plant nitrate pool (the buffer) at a constant fraction of the photosynthesis rate. When applied to data for the diurnal variation in nitrate uptake by ryegrass, the model predicts an uptake pattern similar to that actually observed, with a time lag of about 5 hours between photosynthesis and uptake.  相似文献

Modeling long-term crop response to fertilizer and soil nitrogen   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0  
A simple nitrogen balance model to calculate long-term changes in soil organic nitrogen, nitrogen uptake by the crop and recovery of applied nitrogen, is presented. It functions with time intervals of one year or one growing season. In the model a labile and a stable pool of soil organic nitrogen are distinguished. Transfer coefficients for the various inputs of nitrogen are established that specify the fractions taken up by the crop, lost from the system, and incorporated in soil organic nitrogen. It is shown how input data, model parameters and initial pool sizes can be derived and how the model can be used for calculating long-term changes in total soil organic nitrogen and uptake by the crop. For nitrogen applied annually as fertilizer or organic material the time course of nitrogen uptake and recovery of applied nitrogen is calculated. To test the sensitivity of the model, calculations have been performed for different environmental conditions with higher or lower risks for losses. The model has also been applied to establish fertilizer recommendations for a certain target nitrogen uptake by the crop. Finally, for agricultural systems where periods of cropping alternate with peroids of green fallow the time course of nitrogen uptake by the crop is calculated.  相似文献
