1. The abundance of insect herbivores is mediated by interactions with higher and lower trophic levels. This research asks (i) how phenological change across trophic levels affects host plant quality and selection for aphids, and (ii) what higher trophic level mechanisms drive aphid abundance. 2. Ligusticum porteri is a perennial host for the sap-feeding aphid Aphis asclepiadis and intraguild mirid predators (chiefly Lygus hesperus) in Colorado. We used long-term observational data to discover that aphids and mirids respond differently to phenological cues. These unique responses can impact aphid abundance through changes to host plant selection and quality. 3. We used behavioural choice assays to assess how advanced mirid phenology influences aphid host plant selection. More alates landed and reproduced on mirid-free control plants relative to host plants with prior mirid feeding. However, this preference did not correlate with aphid performance when we compared aphid relative growth rates between treatments. This suggests that advanced mirid phenology would impact aphid populations more through host plant choice, rather than reductions in host quality. The addition of mirids to experimental aphid colonies also demonstrated reduced aphid colony growth via predation. 4. We measured plant cues involved in host selection and found differences in volatile composition between plants with prior mirid feeding compared to control plants, providing the potential for aphids to detect enemy-free space using volatile cues.  相似文献

The east Asian lacertid lizard genus, Takydromus , is well-defined but its relationships to other primitive Palaearctic lacertids are still uncertain and, although it has similarities to the lower Miocene Miolacerta, Takydromus does not appear to be identical with this. The 16 or 17 recognizable species are reviewed and a key provided for their identification; the remaining area of uncertainty about species boundaries is the Takydromus sexlineatus group in Assam. A phylogeny for Takydromus is estimated using a data set of 35 morphological characters drawn from external features, skeleton and soft-parts. There are two main constituent clades which may be informally recognized as Takydromus s.s. and Platyplacopus. Platyplacopus is subtropical and perhaps relict, whereas Takydromus ranges from temperate to tropical areas. The two clades have different ranges of eggs per clutch. In both of them, elongate forms that climb extensively in flimsy vegetation have evolved and have independently acquired similar features that confer performance advantages in this situation. Interestingly, the order of assembly of tliese features is markedly different.  相似文献

The nuclear DNA of fibroblasts from patients suffering with Bloom's syndrome, density labeled for less than one round of DNA replication to give heavy/light molecules, was examined for spontaneous amounts of heavy/heavy DNA (hybrid DNA). When compared to normal fibroblasts the Bloom's syndrome cells exhibited a sixfold increase in such DNA.  相似文献

In 1985 we resurveyed the sites on the Marlborough Downs in southern England at which Cain and Currey in 1960/61 sampled Cepaea snails and thence introduced the term 'area effects' to describe large areas of uniform morph frequency. Some sites no longer harboured Cepaea and at others the species composition had changed, with a general spread of Cepaea hortensis at the expense of Cepaea nemoralis. The majority, however, permitted comparison of morph frequencies between the two surveys. In C. nemoralis, we detected a significant overall decrease in the frequency of the brown morph and estimate selection as 5–9% per generation. There was no apparent change in frequencies of banded morphs. In C. hortensis we detected a significant overall increase in the frequency of unbanded shells (1–3% selection per generation) and an almost significant decrease in the frequency of fusions within the banded class. There was insufficient colour polymorphism in C. hortensis to allow analysis of colour morph frequencies. These changes—all in the direction of reduced absorption of solar energy—resemble others detected in both species at other localities in southern England. Possible explanations include large-scale climatic effects and changes in vegetation.  相似文献

Of 479 eggs laid by female Cimex lectularius Linnaeus and C.hemipterus (Fabricius) mated by males of the other species, one was fertile and gave rise to a first stage nymph. The egg showed sculpturing typical of C.hemipterus, the female parent, and the nymph conformed to the narrow pronotum and abdomen of this species, being significantly different from C.lectularius in the width of the abdomen. Because the orientation and lengths of the bristles on the sides of the abdomen were distinctly different from C.hemipterus and closely resembled C.lectularius, the single nymph obtained from the cross C.hemipterus x lectularius was interpreted as being a hybrid rather than a product of parthenogenesis.  相似文献

Chromosomal pairing of the three diploid hybrids Aegilops uniaristata × Ae. tauschii (ND), Ae. umbellulata × Ae. tauschii (UD) and Ae. comosa × Ae. uniaristata (MN), and a triploid hybrid Ae. cylindrica × Ae. caudata (DCC), was analyzed by electron microscopy in surface-spread-prophase-I nuclei and compared with light-microscopic observations of metaphase-I cells after C-banding and fluorescence in situhybridization. All hybrids showed extensive synapsis and complex multivalents in which up to 14 chromosomes were involved. In the diploid hybrids most metaphase-I chromosomal associations were between homoeologs, their frequencies being dependent on the relationship between the donor genomes. Despite the different overall bound-arm frequencies displayed by ND and MN hybrids at metaphase-I, chromosomes bearing rDNA sequences showed similar mean cell chromosomal association frequencies. In the triploid hybrid preferential associations involving C genomes were predominant. Various species of plants in the family Asteraceae were shown to be hosts for the European tarnished plant bug Lygus rugulipennis and one, Matricaria recutita, was chosen as a potential trap plant for adults of this capsid species on their migration into fields of late-season strawberries from other host plants in July. There was a delay in the build-up of populations of nymphs of L. rugulipennis on strawberries surrounded by a barrier strip of M. recutita compared to those without a barrier, but overall there were no consistent reductions in populations of the pest. Numbers of L. rugulipennis on the trap plant were small until late August. In a similar experiment using an alternative trap plant, Medicago sativa, no significant reductions in the numbers of L. rugulipennis were found on strawberries with the trap barrier, despite large numbers of the pest insect being found on this trap plant.Although predatory arthropods such as spiders, Orius spp., and nabids, and hymenopterous parasitoids were found on the trap plants, there was no indication that they became more numerous on the strawberry plots inside these barriers than on those without surrounding trap plants.  相似文献
