Review article number 6 : Plant molluscicides

A review on the application of plant molluscicides in the control of schistosomiasis is presented. Laboratory bioassays are discussed, together with criteria for activity. An attempt has been made to provide a comprehensive list of known molluscicidal natural products.

Effects of cold on CO2 exchange in winter rape leaves

A viable wheat hybrid intermediate of the same height as the parents was obtained by crossing the female parent of tall variety NP4 with the male parent of the dwarf variety HD2160. Seeds of the hybrid and its parents were germinated and their growth pattern as well as the activities of peroxidase, indolyl-3-acetic acid oxidase and amylase in extracts made from them were studied at the early seedling stages i.e. up to 96 h.
A positive correlation existed between the length of the axis at the early seedling stage and at mature plant height as far as the parental varieties are concerned but no such correlation was observed with the hybrid. Growth of the hybrid seedlings was less than of its parents. Light appeared to stimulate the longitudinal growth of the axis to different extents in the parents and hybrid. Higher activities of peroxidase, indolyl-3-acetic acid oxidase and amylase were observed in the hybrid as compared to both of its parents. Lethal wheat hybrid also exhibits increased activities of amylase, indolyl-3-acetic acid oxidase and peroxidase. Therefore, it appears that seedling growth and enzyme activities at the seedling stage are not always correlated with hybrid vigour.     

Personal reflections on the nature of intelligence in humans and machines

Computers, the human mind, and social systems have common problems of inadequate memory and insufficient data manipulation speed. In each of these domains, information compression techniques have evolved to reduce storage and processing needs. Among the techniques for information compression, coding of information in procedures stands out as exceptionally powerful. Procedural information coding also gives rise to behavior that may be defined as intelligent. It is found in the human mind, in machines and in social systems. Its use in human thought is aided by language development which promotes regular review of abstract procedures. A practical consequence of better understanding of procedural information coding is the possibility of training people to exhibit greater mental capacity, a controversial possibility. This paper explores the impact of data processing resource limitations, data compression and procedural thinking in men and machines.     

Hybridization of Gossypium species through in ovulo embryo culture

An interspecific hybrid of the sexually incompatible species G. hirsutum cv. Laxmi and G. arboreum cv. Jyoti was obtained through in ovulo embryo culture. Eightto twelve-day-old ovules were excised and cultured on Beasley and Ting's medium supplemented with Indol-3 acetic acid (5×10^-6 to 7×10^-6 M), Kinetin (5×10^-6 to 5×10^-8 M), Gibberellic acid (5×10^-7 to 5×10^-9M), Ammonium chloride (5 to 15mM) and Casein hydrolysate (50 to 200mg/l) added individually and in various combinations along with sucrose. No single medium was adequate to ensure complete development of the fertilized ovules to plantlets, thus necessitating a sequential five step transfer to different media. Effects of in vivo ultrasound hyperthermia on natural killer cell cytotoxicity in the hamster

The effects of in vivo ultrasound irradiation of the spleen on immunological functions were assessed with an in vitro natural killer (NK) cell cytotoxic assay. Anesthetized hamsters were exposed to 1 MHz ultrasound at intensity levels currently being used clinically for therapeutic diathermy and hyperthermia (1-5 W/cm2, for 500 sec with constant beam scanning). Hyperthermic levels in the spleen ranged from 38-43 degrees C. Significant depression of natural killer (NK) cell activity was seen 4 h after spleen irradiation as compared to sham irradiated and normal animals. A return towards normal levels was observed in experimental groups at 24 h after exposure. Sham and normal animals were not significantly different in NK activity, indicating no significant stress-related immunosuppressive effects due to handling. Differential leukocyte counts taken for each exposure condition showed significant lymphopenia at 4, 8, and 16 h after exposure, near normal levels at 24 h, and complete recovery by 48 h. The number of circulating mononuclear cells at 4 h showed a dose-related suppression as the exposure intensities were increased.     

Formation of partially phosphorylated phosphorylase in isoproterenol stimulated rat hearts

Summary Phosphorylase ab hybrid was demonstrated in perfused rat hearts and during the in vitro conversion of purified rat heart phosphorylase b. Phosphorylase ab hybrid was determined in rat heart extracts by the activating effect of AMP in the presence of caffeine. These results were confirmed by the quantitative determination of incorporated ³²P in vitro and through the characteristic inhibition of ab hybrid by glucose-6-phosphate.As shown by our results, in aerobically perfused control hearts only the ab hybrid represents the active form of phosphorylase, its activity reaching about 20% of the total. In response to isoproterenol (5–1000 ng), the amount of ab hybrid rose to about 30–40%, preceding the rise of the a form, which increased in a dose-dependent manner up to 45% of the total.The great sensitivity of the ab form to AMP activation and glucose-6-phosphate inhibition supports its physiological significance in heart under in vivo conditions as well. Our results strongly suggest that the activity ratio -AMP/+AMP reflects rather the percentage ratio of phosphorylated subunits than that of the activated (partially or totally phosphorylated) phosphorylase molecules.     

Irreversible Activation of the Opiate Receptor of Neuroblastoma × Glioma Hybrid Cells by an Alkylating Benzomorphan Derivative

The benozomorphan derivative (-)-2-[2-(p-bromoacetamidophenyl)ethyl]-5,9 alpha-dimethyl-2'-hydroxy-6,7-benzomorphan (BAB), capable of reacting with nucleophilic groups, acts on neuroblastoma X glioma hybrid cells as a potent, irreversible opiate agonist. Its potency in inhibiting the increase in cellular cyclic AMP, evoked by prostaglandin E1, is comparable to that of Leu-enkephalin. This also applies to its capacity to compete with [3H]D-Ala2-Met-enkephalinamide ([3H]DAEA) in binding on cell membrane preparations. The comparatively lower potency of (-)-2-[2-(p-acetamidophenyl)-ethyl]-5,9 alpha-dimethly-2'-hydroxy-5,7-benzomorphan (AB), which differs from BAB in the substitution of the bromoacetamido group by an acetamido group, is of the same order of magnitude as that of morphine. The covalent interaction of BAB with the opiate receptors is deduced from the observations that (1) it is not possible to wash away this compound from the receptors, (2) the potency of BAB in inhibiting the specific binding of [3H]DAEA increases with prolonged preincubation time, and (3) AB behaves as a reversible agonist.
