Sex-biased natal dispersal in long-lived species may resultin interactions between parents and mature young of the philopatricsex. To investigate the evolutionary basis of natal philopatryin a noncooperative species, the common goldeneye Bucephalaclangula, we studied possible costs and benefits of simultaneousbreeding of females and philopatric daughters. We did not find any fitness consequences of a daughter's breeding on their mother'sbreeding in terms of nest-site selection, body weight, clutchsize, hatching date, or hatching success. Our results, therefore, did not support the assumption of the local resource competitionhypothesis, that the natally philopatric sex should be morecostly to a breeding parent. As possible benefits for daughters returning to their natal area, we tested inheritance of nestsites from mothers and explored whether daughters utilize thepresence of their mother by parasitically sneaking into hermother's nest. Daughters' nest-site selection was not associatedwith the presence of their mothers. A comparison between daughtersand control females revealed that daughters chose their nestsite closer to their natal nest than expected by nest-siteavailability alone. Daughters could not expect to inherit anest site from their mother, and we did not find other indicationsof cooperation between relatives either. The mother's clutchsize did not increase in the year breeding with the daughter, indicating daughters do not parasitize their mother's nest.We suggest that benefits such as decreased nest predation riskassociated with nesting close to the natal nest site may beimportant in the natal philopatric behavior of the species.  相似文献

Studies of highly kin-structured mammal societies have revealedthe importance of natal philopatry in determining the distributionof genetic variation within populations. In comparison, therelationship between philopatry and genetic diversity withinpopulations of moderately kin-structured societies has receivedrelatively little attention. Previous studies of Neotoma macrotishave suggested that females form distinct kin clusters. Eachkin cluster overlaps spatially with the home range(s) of oneor more males that are not related to each other or to the femaleswith which they are spatially associated. To examine interactionsbetween philopatry and genetic structure in this apparentlymoderately kin-structured species, we characterized spatialand genetic relationships among individually marked femalesin a population of N. macrotis from central coastal California. Our field studies revealed that, contrary to expectation, femalesin this population were not strongly philopatric and spatiallyclustered females were not characterized by high levels of geneticrelatedness. Nevertheless, genetic structure was evident withinthe study population; spatial and genetic distances among femaleswere significantly correlated, suggesting that dispersal patternsinfluenced genetic structure even in the absence of marked femalephilopatry. Because females with overlapping spatial distributionswere not typically closely related to one another, opportunitiesfor the evolution of kin-selected social behavior (e.g., cooperativecare of young) appear to be limited in this population.  相似文献

Philopatry over the lifetime and its relationship with reproductivesuccess were examined using longitudinal records of nest locationand reproduction of individual blue-footed boobies. Males showedshorter natal dispersal than females, and natal dispersal distanceof both sexes were unrelated to either first reproductive successor lifetime reproductive success. Throughout the early lifetime, males and females nested closer to their first breeding sitesthan to their natal sites, and comparison with a simulationof successive breeding dispersals in random directions showedthat male and female blue-footed boobies are philopatric tothe first breeding site. Therefore, throughout the early lifetime, the first breeding site seems to function as a point of referencefor breeding site use together with the previous season's site.Males and females with shorter natal dispersal distances showedstronger lifetime philopatry to their first breeding sites, suggesting stable individual variation in competitive abilityor dispersal phenotype. However, early lifetime philopatry tofirst breeding sites was unrelated to annual breeding success.Compared with simple fidelity to previous breeding sites, lifetimephilopatry to first breeding sites should result in increasedkin interactions and greater selection for kin recognition, altruism and inbreeding avoidance, as well as long-term familiaritywith neighbors.  相似文献

We analyzed male migration during a 20-year period in the free-ranging Barbary macaque population of Affenberg Salem. Most natal migrations occurred around puberty, but only one third of all males left the natal group. Secondary group transfers were rare. All males immediately transferred to other bisexual groups. Migration rates were highest during periods with high adult female/male ratios within social groups. Immigrants highly preferred groups with fewer males of their own age than in the natal group, and many males immigrated into groups that had no male their own age. These groups originated from a skewed distribution of resident males during group fissions. A comparison of emigrants with their natal peers supports the inbreeding avoidance hypothesis as cause of emigration rather than the male competition avoidance hypothesis. Emigrants had no lower individual rank position and did not come from lower-ranking matrilines. Emigrants had more female maternal relatives, especially sisters. Males without female relatives almost never emigrated. Conversely, there is virtually no indication that emigrants were evicted from the natal group. Emigrants had no increased mortality. Paternity data revealed that the reproductive success of emigrants and natal males is similar, indicating that emigration had no reproductive cost. Many similarities between emigrants and natal males that separated from female maternal kin during group fissions suggest that inner migration during fissions is an alternative way to avoid maternal inbreeding. The mating system resulted in a genetic structure within social groups that largely diminished the chances for paternal inbreeding even without recognizing paternal kin.  相似文献

Effective conservation and management necessitate an understanding of the ecological mechanisms that shape species life histories in order to predict how variability in natural and anthropogenic impacts will alter growth rates, recruitment, and survival. Among these mechanisms, the interaction between parturition timing and prey availability frequently influences offspring success, particularly when postnatal care is absent. Here, we assess how parturition timing and nursery conditions, including prey abundance and environmental conditions, influence the growth and potential survival of blacktip sharks (Carcharhinus limbatus) in western Gulf of Mexico (GOM) estuaries over their first year. Catch data from long‐term gillnet monitoring allowed for clear delineation of cohorts based on size frequency distribution plots, and showed that late parturition cohorts born in estuaries with fewer prey resources exhibited more rapid growth than early parturition cohorts that experienced more abundant prey. Compensatory behaviors that promoted accelerated growth led to reduced second year residency, likely due to reduced survival resultant from greater risk taking and potentially due to reduced site fidelity attributed to larger body size. Water temperatures influenced blacktip growth rates through physiological increases in metabolism and potential premigratory foraging cues associated with cooling temperatures. Gradual warming of the GOM (0.03°C year−1) was also correlated with earlier parturition across the study period (1982–2017), similar to other migratory species. Considering current trends in climate and associated phenological shifts in many animals, testing hypotheses assessing compensatory growth‐risk trade‐offs is important moving forward to predict changes in life histories and associated recruitment in concert with current and future conservation actions, like wildlife management.  相似文献

The role of insecticidal application and host plant resistance in managing Spodoptera exigua has been well documented, but the effect of different host plants, on which the pest cycles its population in the field, has seldom been investigated. Therefore, we have studied the vulnerability of S. exigua against commonly used insecticides (cypermethrin, chlorpyrifos, lufenuron, and emamectin benzoate) with different mode of actions when it switches its generations from natal to auxiliary hosts and vice versa. Different field populations being established on different host plants including castor, cauliflower, cotton, okra, and spinach were collected and reared in the laboratory before insecticidal bioassays. The role of larval diet and host plant switching on their response to tolerate applied insecticides was studied using leaf‐dip bioassay methods. Host switching demonstrated a significant role in altering the vulnerability of S. exigua populations to tested insecticides. Spodoptera exigua sourced from castor, when switched host to okra and spinach, exhibited 50% higher mortality when treated with emamectin benzoate. This trend in mortality was consistent upon complete host switch cycle (natal—auxiliary—natal host). However, the highest increase (92%) in vulnerability was recorded when the larvae were shifted to spinach from cotton. In general, chlorpyrifos and lufenuron had highest efficacies in terms of larval mortality. The findings of present studies provide insights to a better understanding the behavior of polyphagous pests and the role of different host plants in altering the susceptibility of these pests against applied insecticides. Ultimately the results warrant that due consideration should be given to cropping patterns and time of host switching by pest population during planning and executing chemical control.  相似文献

Animals exhibit diverse dispersal strategies, including sex‐biased dispersal, a phenomenon common in vertebrates. Dispersal influences the genetic structure of populations as well as geographic variation in phenotypic traits. Patterns of spatial genetic structure and geographic variation may vary between the sexes whenever males and females exhibit different dispersal behaviors. Here, we examine dispersal, spatial genetic structure, and spatial acoustic structure in Rufous‐and‐white Wrens, a year‐round resident tropical bird. Both sexes sing in this species, allowing us to compare acoustic variation between males and females and examine the relationship between dispersal and song sharing for both sexes. Using a long‐term dataset collected over an 11‐year period, we used banding data and molecular genetic analyses to quantify natal and breeding dispersal distance in Rufous‐and‐white Wrens. We quantified song sharing and examined whether sharing varied with dispersal distance, for both males and females. Observational data and molecular genetic analyses indicate that dispersal is female‐biased. Females dispersed farther from natal territories than males, and more often between breeding territories than males. Furthermore, females showed no significant spatial genetic structure, consistent with expectations, whereas males showed significant spatial genetic structure. Overall, natal dispersal appears to have more influence than breeding dispersal on spatial genetic structure and spatial acoustic structure, given that the majority of breeding dispersal events resulted in individuals moving only short distances. Song sharing between pairs of same‐sex animals decreases with the distance between their territories for both males and females, although males exhibited significantly greater song sharing than females. Lastly, we measured the relationship between natal dispersal distance and song sharing. We found that sons shared fewer songs with their fathers the farther they dispersed from their natal territories, but that song sharing between daughters and mothers was not significantly correlated with natal dispersal distance. Our results reveal cultural differences between the sexes, suggesting a relationship between culture and sex‐biased dispersal.  相似文献

The kin structure and dispersal pattern of polar bears ( Ursus maritimus ) of the Barents Sea was investigated during the spring mating season using two complementary approaches. First, individual genotypes based on the analyses of 27 microsatellite loci of 583 polar bears were related to field information gathered from 1146 bears in order to reconstruct the animals' pedigrees and to infer geographical distances between adult bears of different relatedness categories. According to the data, the median natal dispersal distance of the male animals was 52 km while that of the females was 93 km. Second, the relatedness of pairs of adult bears was estimated and correlated to the geographical distance between them. The female dyads had a much stronger kin structure than the male dyads. The 'pedigree approach' revealed a male kin structure which could not be detected using the 'relatedness approach'. This suggests that, on a broader scale, effective dispersal is slightly male biased. Despite fidelity to natal areas, male-mediated gene flow may nevertheless prevent genetic differentiation. Males might occasionally shift their home range which could therefore lead to a male-biased breeding dispersal. Our results showed that a nonterritorial species such as the polar bear that has a high dispersal potential, lives in a highly unstable environment and migrates seasonally is still able to exhibit a distinct kin structure during the mating season.  相似文献
