Water drinking habits during flight in adult mayflies ofEpeorus ikanonis Takahashi were observed and the effect of water intake on their longevity was examined. The study was carried out in a mountain stream in western Japan. Adult males collected a water droplet under the head capsule while alighting on the water surface and consumed it after moving to nearby riparian vegetation. The amount of water intake was experimentally estimated to be 9.7% of the bodyweight for males. Although females did not show the water drinking behavior in the field, they imbibed as much as 5.5% of the bodyweight of water in an experimental situation. Morphological observation of the mouthparts revealed that the water was drawn in through the pits at the base of the labrum. In the field caging experiment, males with a water supply had a substantially longer life span than those without. Increase in adult life span by drinking water was less marked in females. Multiple copulation was observed in both sexes during the experiment. The water drinking behavior of the males may closely relate to mating success through increased longevity. Variation in the longevity of adult mayflies was discussed with regard to the possibility of water intake. We study bias-reduced estimators of exponentially transformed parameters in general linear models (GLMs) and show how they can be used to obtain bias-reduced conditional (or unconditional) odds ratios in matched case-control studies. Two options are considered and compared: the explicit approach and the implicit approach. The implicit approach is based on the modified score function where bias-reduced estimates are obtained by using iterative procedures to solve the modified score equations. The explicit approach is shown to be a one-step approximation of this iterative procedure. To apply these approaches for the conditional analysis of matched case-control studies, with potentially unmatched confounding and with several exposures, we utilize the relation between the conditional likelihood and the likelihood of the unconditional logit binomial GLM for matched pairs and Cox partial likelihood for matched sets with appropriately setup data. The properties of the estimators are evaluated by using a large Monte Carlo simulation study and an illustration of a real dataset is shown. Researchers reporting the results on the exponentiated scale should use bias-reduced estimators since otherwise the effects can be under or overestimated, where the magnitude of the bias is especially large in studies with smaller sample sizes.  相似文献

Analysts often estimate treatment effects in observational studies using propensity score matching techniques. When there are missing covariate values, analysts can multiply impute the missing data to create m completed data sets. Analysts can then estimate propensity scores on each of the completed data sets, and use these to estimate treatment effects. However, there has been relatively little attention on developing imputation models to deal with the additional problem of missing treatment indicators, perhaps due to the consequences of generating implausible imputations. However, simply ignoring the missing treatment values, akin to a complete case analysis, could also lead to problems when estimating treatment effects. We propose a latent class model to multiply impute missing treatment indicators. We illustrate its performance through simulations and with data taken from a study on determinants of children's cognitive development. This approach is seen to obtain treatment effect estimates closer to the true treatment effect than when employing conventional imputation procedures as well as compared to a complete case analysis.  相似文献

The gold standard for investigating the efficacy of a new therapy is a (pragmatic) randomized controlled trial (RCT). This approach is costly, time-consuming, and not always practicable. At the same time, huge quantities of available patient-level control condition data in analyzable format of (former) RCTs or real-world data (RWD) are neglected. Therefore, alternative study designs are desirable. The design presented here consists of setting up a prediction model for determining treatment effects under the control condition for future patients. When a new treatment is intended to be tested against a control treatment, a single-arm trial for the new therapy is conducted. The treatment effect is then evaluated by comparing the outcomes of the single-arm trial against the predicted outcomes under the control condition. While there are obvious advantages of this design compared to classical RCTs (increased efficiency, lower cost, alleviating participants’ fear of being on control treatment), there are several sources of bias. Our aim is to investigate whether and how such a design—the prediction design—may be used to provide information on treatment effects by leveraging external data sources. For this purpose, we investigated under what assumptions linear prediction models could be used to predict the counterfactual of patients precisely enough to construct a test and an appropriate sample size formula for evaluating the average treatment effect in the population of a new study. Characteristics of the reproductive cycle of Basilichthys microlepidotus (Jenyns), an atherinid fish living in a South American Mediterranean arid zone, are analysed. Specimens 9-170 mm in total length were captured from August 1982 to April 1984 in the Rio Choapa, in northern Chile (31%%45' S, 71°15' W). Analysis of gonadosomatic index fluctuations, and determination of the proportion of mature males and females captured during the study period, allowed the estimation of the duration of the reproductive cycle.
Females 70–170 mm in total length contained 2000–9000 intraovarian oocytes, of which approximately 80% were vitellogenic (100–1300 μm in diameter) and exhibited a polymodal distribution. A further 4 to 15% of the total oocytes, measured 1700–2000 μm in diameter and appeared ready to be spawned. In 30% of the examined ovaries some of the largest oocytes exhibited signs of degeneration, or atresia. Juveniles approximately 30 mm in total length were captured over most of the study period. Results strongly suggest that B. microlepidotus has multiple spawnings.  相似文献

Aim To quantify the influences of forest area, shape and isolation on tree species diversity in Ghana and to compare their significance with the influences of climate (average annual rainfall) and disturbance (fire burn, logging, agriculture). Location The forest zone of southern Ghana, West Africa (between 5 and 8° N). Methods For twenty‐two forest fragments (1) bivariate regression analyses of tree species diversity (number and composition) were employed with forest spatial geometry, climate and disturbance variables. (2) Multivariate regression analyses of tree species number and all seven environmental variables were used to determine the variability in tree species number that could be accounted for by these environmental variables. Results Forest area, shape and isolation accounted for sharply decreasing proportions of variability in tree species diversity. Large forest fragments contained the greatest numbers of tree species and the highest proportions of rare tree species; irregular fragments had high proportions of regenerating, light‐demanding pioneers and mature, animal‐dispersed species and isolated fragments were floristically similar to less isolated fragments. Fire burn and average annual rainfall accounted for small, but nevertheless significant, proportions of variability in tree species diversity. Logging and agriculture were non‐significant variables. Main conclusions (1) Forest area is the most important consideration when planning tropical forest reserves. (2) Management of disturbance should take priority over management of forest shape if higher levels of tree diversity and species quality are to be maintained. (3) If new reserves are to be designated, they should be located within different climatic zones in order to capture a large fraction of the regional biota. (4) Biogeographers have an important role to play in formulating and testing hypotheses at a broad spatial scale and ultimately, informing conservation management within the tropical biome.  相似文献

The regulation of surface water pCO2 was studied in a set of 33 unproductive boreal lakes of different humic content, situated along a latitudinal gradient (57°N to 64°N) in Sweden. The lakes were sampled four times during one year, and analyzed on a wide variety of water chemistry parameters. With only one exception, all lakes were supersaturated with CO2 with respect to the atmosphere at all sampling occasions. pCO2 was closely related to the DOC concentration in lakes, which in turn was mainly regulated by catchment characteristics. This pattern was similar along the latitudinal gradient and at different seasons of the year, indicating that it is valid for a variety of climatic conditions within the boreal forest zone. We suggest that landscape characteristics determine the accumulation and subsequent supply of allochthonous organic matter from boreal catchments to lakes, which in turn results in boreal lakes becoming net sources of atmospheric CO2.  相似文献

We monitored the haul-out behavior of 68 radio-tagged harbor seals ( Phoca vitulina ) during the molt season at two Alaskan haul-out sites (Grand Island, August-September 1994; Nanvak Bay, August-September 2000). For each site, we created a statistical model of the proportion of seals hauled out as a function of date, time of day, tide, and weather covariates. Using these models, we identified the conditions that would result in the greatest proportion of seals hauled out. Although those "ideal conditions" differed between sites, the proportion of seals predicted to be hauled out under those conditions was very similar (81.3% for Grand Island and 85.7% for Nanvak Bay). The similar estimates for both sites suggest that haul-out proportions under locally ideal conditions may be constant between years and geographic regions, at least during the molt season.  相似文献

The lifetime mating frequency of female butterflies is believed tobe dependent on the reproductive status of the males which they have mated. This report assesses those status usingPieris rapae L. Multiple mating females mated males with a short time interval after the last mating or males with many mating records. Such males, like small ones, produced small spermatophores during copulation, which may have resulted in high mating frequency of those females. The males with short time interval after the last mating or those with many mating records also showed a long mating duration. Alternative interpretations of the adaptive significance of this behavior for males are discussed.  相似文献
