Sexual conflict has been suggested as a general cause of genetic diversification in reproductive characters, and as a possible cause of speciation. We use individual-based simulations to study the dynamics of sexual conflict in an isolated diploid population with no spatial structure. To explore the effects of genetic details, we consider two different types of interlocus interaction between female and male traits, and three different types of intra-locus interaction. In the simulations, sexual conflict resulted in at least the following five regimes: (1) continuous coevolutionary chase, (2) evolution toward an equilibrium, (3) cyclic coevolution, (4) extensive genetic differentiation in female traits/genes only, and (5) extensive genetic differentiation in both male and female traits/genes. Genetic differentiation was hardly observed when the traits involved in reproduction were determined additively and interacted in a trait-by-trait way. When the traits interacted in a component-by-component way, genetic differentiation was frequently observed under relatively broad conditions. The likelihood of genetic differentiation largely depended on the number of loci and the type of within-locus dominance. With multiple loci per trait, genetic differentiation was often observed but sympatric speciation was typically hindered by recombination. Sympatric speciation was possible but only under restrictive conditions. Our simulations also highlight the importance of stochastic effects in the dynamics of sexual conflict.  相似文献

Diversity occurs at multiple scales. Within a single population, there is diversity in genotypes and phenotypes. At a larger scale, within ecological communities, there is diversity in species. A number of studies have investigated how diversity at these two scales influence each other through what has been termed eco‐evolutionary feedbacks. Here we study a three‐species ecological module called apparent competition, in which the predator is evolving in a trait that determines its interaction with two prey species. Unlike previous studies on apparent competition, which employed evolutionary frameworks with very simple genetics, we study an eco‐evolutionary model in which the predator's trait is determined by two recombining diallelic loci, so that its mean and variance can evolve, as well as associations (linkage disequilibrium) between the loci. We ask how eco‐evolutionary feedbacks with these two loci affect the coexistence of the prey species and the maintenance of polymorphisms within the predator species. We uncover a novel eco‐evolutionary feedback between the prey densities and the linkage disequilibrium between the predator's loci. Through a stability analysis, we demonstrate how these feedbacks affect polymorphisms at both loci and, among others, may generate stable cycling.  相似文献

  • Investigating spatial variation in the relative importance of sexual reproduction and clonal propagation is critical to obtain more accurate estimates of future effective population sizes and genetic diversity, as well as to identify ecological correlates of clonality.
  • We combined a stratified sampling scheme with microsatellite genetic analyses to estimate variation in the proportion of sexual versus clonal recruits among saplings in five populations of the tree Pyrus bourgaeana. Using a likelihood framework, we identified clones among the genotypes analysed and examined variation among populations regarding the proportion of saplings coming from clonal propagation. We also examined the relationship between the relative abundance of clonal shoots across the studied populations and their herbivory levels.
  • Our results revealed that one third of the saplings examined (N = 225 saplings) had a probability above 0.9 of being clones of nearby (<10 m) trees, with the ratio between clonal propagation and sexual recruitment varying up to eight‐fold among populations. A small portion of these putative clonal shoots reached sexual maturity. Relative abundance of clonal shoots did not significantly relate to the herbivory by ungulates.
  • Our results call into question optimistic expectations of previous studies reporting sufficient levels of recruitment under parental trees without animal seed dispersal services. Nevertheless, given that some of these clonal shoots reach sexual maturity, clonal propagation can ultimately facilitate the long‐term persistence of populations during adverse periods (e.g. environmental stress, impoverished pollinator communities, seed dispersal limitation).

Although Tropicoperdix has been considered to be either a full genus or a species complex within the Phasianid genus Arborophila (hill partridges), there is long‐standing uncertainty regarding the degree of difference that warrants generic separation, including reported anatomical cranial differences. In addition, the intra‐generic taxonomy remains under dispute. Most studies hypothesize that Tropicoperdix comprises three species, while others postulate from one to four species. However, no molecular study has been performed to clarify the systematic and taxonomic uncertainties surrounding Tropicoperdix. In the present study, we performed a series of molecular phylogenetic analyses of Tropicoperdix and Arborophila taxa based on two mitochondrial genes and five nuclear introns. All the results are consistent with the finding that Tropicoperdix and Arborophila are phylogenetically distinct and distant genera, although the precise phylogenetic position of Tropicoperdix remains undetermined. Retrospective examination of external characteristics also supports the generic separation, as well as providing evidence of remarkable multiple character convergence. We propose that Tropicoperdix comprises at least two full species based on mitochondrial data obtained from museum specimens by using a next‐generation sequencing method. © 2015 The Linnean Society of London  相似文献

Mutation may impose a substantial load on populations, which varies according to the reproductive mode of organisms. Over the past years, various authors used adaptive landscape models to predict the long‐term effect of mutation on mean fitness; however, many of these studies assumed very weak mutation rates, so that at most one mutation segregates in the population. In this article, we derive several simple approximations (confirmed by simulations) for the mutation load at high mutation rate (U), using a general model that allows us to play with the number of selected traits (n), the degree of pleiotropy of mutations, and the shape of the fitness function (which affects the average sign and magnitude of epistasis among mutations). When mutations have strong fitness effects, the equilibrium fitness of sexuals and asexuals is close to ; under weaker mutational effects, sexuals reach a different regime where is a simple function of U and of a parameter describing the shape of the fitness function. Contrarily to weak mutation results showing that is an increasing function of population size and a decreasing function of n, these parameters may have opposite effects in sexual populations at high mutation rate.  相似文献

The taxonomic genus Rickettsiella (Gammaproteobacteria; Legionellales) comprises intracellular bacteria associated with a wide range of arthropods including insects, arachnids and crustaceans. The present study provides ultrastructural together with genetic evidence for a Rickettsiella bacterium in the common rough woodlouse, Porcellio scaber (Isopoda, Porcellionidae), occurring in Germany, and shows that this bacterium is very closely related to one of the same genus occurring in California that infects the pill bug, Armadillidium vulgare (Isopoda, Armadillidiidae). Both bacterial isolates displayed the ultrastructural features described previously for crustacean-associated bacteria of the genus Rickettsiella, including the absence of well-defined associated protein crystals; occurrence of the latter is a typical characteristic of infection by this type of bacteria in insects, but has not been reported in crustaceans. A molecular systematic approach combining multilocus sequence analysis (MLSA) with likelihood-based significance testing demonstrated that despite their distant geographic origins, both bacteria form a tight sub-clade within the genus Rickettsiella. In the 16S rRNA gene trees, this sub-clade includes other bacterial sequences from woodlice. Moreover, the bacterial specimens from P. scaber and A. vulgare are found genetically or morphologically different from each of the four currently recognized Rickettsiella species. Therefore, the designation ‘Candidatus Rickettsiella isopodorum’ is introduced for this new lineage of isopod-associated Rickettsiella bacteria.  相似文献

Among eukaryotes, sexual reproduction is by far the most predominant mode of reproduction. However, some systems maintaining sexuality appear particularly labile and raise intriguing questions on the evolutionary routes to asexuality. Thelytokous parthenogenesis is a form of spontaneous loss of sexuality leading to strong distortion of sex ratio towards females and resulting from mutation, hybridization or infection by bacterial endosymbionts. We investigated whether ecological specialization is a likely mechanism of spread of thelytoky within insect communities. Focusing on the highly specialized genus Megastigmus (Hymenoptera: Torymidae), we first performed a large literature survey to examine the distribution of thelytoky in these wasps across their respective obligate host plant families. Second, we tested for thelytoky caused by endosymbionts by screening in 15 arrhenotokous and 10 thelytokous species for Wolbachia, Cardinium, Arsenophonus and Rickettsia endosymbionts and by performing antibiotic treatments. Finally, we performed phylogenetic reconstructions using multilocus sequence typing (MLST) to examine the evolution of endosymbiont‐mediated thelytoky in Megastigmus and its possible connections to host plant specialization. We demonstrate that thelytoky evolved from ancestral arrhenotoky through the horizontal transmission and the fixation of the parthenogenesis‐inducing Wolbachia. We find that ecological specialization in Wolbachia's hosts was probably a critical driving force for Wolbachia infection and spread of thelytoky, but also a constraint. Our work further reinforces the hypothesis that community structure of insects is a major driver of the epidemiology of endosymbionts and that competitive interactions among closely related species may facilitate their horizontal transmission.  相似文献

Perennial grasses constitute a major group of species showing a dramatic decline of biodiversity in successional plant communities. Using AFLP markers, we examined 12 populations of the expansive grass Brachypodium pinnatum differing in habitat age (30–50, ca. 100 and >300 years old) in order to determine whether clonal diversity of populations, genetic variation, and the relative importance of clonal propagation versus sexual reproduction change with grassland age. Five AFLP primer combinations gave a total of 517 bands, 79% of which were polymorphic. 314 different multilocus lineages were distinguished among the 453 samples analyzed. The number of genotypes (G) and clonal richness (R) decreased with habitat age, while the distribution of the frequency of genets changed from many clones of similar size to dominance by one or a few large clones. We consider these results to give evidence of significant role of sexual reproduction in the early phases of colonization and prevalence of clonal growth and competitive exclusion of less adapted genotypes in the later ones. However, habitat age had only marginal effect on genetic diversity, as percentage of polymorphic loci (PPL) within all the populations analyzed was similar, viz. 38.6–43.5%.  相似文献

Leptospirosis, a widespread zoonosis, is a re-emerging infectious disease caused by pathogenic Leptospira species. In Taiwan, Leptospira santarosai serovar Shermani is the most frequently isolated serovar, causing both renal and systemic infections. This study aimed to generate a L. santarosai serovar Shermani genome sequence and categorize its hypothetical genes, particularly those associated with virulence. The genome sequence consists of 3,936,333 nucleotides and 4033 predicted genes. Additionally, 2244 coding sequences could be placed into clusters of orthologous groups and the number of genes involving cell wall/membrane/envelope biogenesis and defense mechanisms was higher than that of other Leptospira spp. Comparative genetic analysis based on BLASTX data revealed that about 73% and 68.8% of all coding sequences have matches to pathogenic L. interrogans and L. borgpetersenii, respectively, and about 57.6% to saprophyte L. biflexa. Among the hypothetical proteins, 421 have a transmembrane region, 172 have a signal peptide and 17 possess a lipoprotein signature. According to PFAM prediction, 32 hypothetical proteins have properties of toxins and surface proteins mediated bacterial attachment, suggesting they may have roles associated with virulence. The availability of the genome sequence of L. santarosai serovar Shermani and the bioinformatics re-annotation of leptospiral hypothetical proteins will facilitate further functional genomic studies to elucidate the pathogenesis of leptospirosis and develop leptospiral vaccines.  相似文献
