1. The thermal regime of rivers plays an important role in the overall health of aquatic ecosystems, including water quality issues and the distribution of aquatic species within the river environment. Consequently, for conducting environmental impact assessments as well as for effective fisheries management, it is important to understand the thermal behaviour of rivers and related heat exchange processes. 2. This study reviews the different river thermal processes responsible for water temperature variability on both the temporal (e.g. diel, daily, seasonal) and spatial scales, as well as providing information related to different water temperature models currently found in the literature. 3. Water temperature models are generally classified into three groups: regression, stochastic and deterministic models. Deterministic models employ an energy budget approach to predict river water temperature, whereas regression and stochastic models generally rely on air to water temperature relationships. 4. Water temperature variability can occur naturally or as a result of anthropogenic perturbations, such as thermal pollution, deforestation, flow modification and climate change. Literature information is provided on the thermal regime of rivers in relation to anthropogenic impacts and such information will contribute to the better protection of fish habitat and more efficient fisheries management. 相似文献

A variety of behavioural traits have substantial effects on the gene dynamics and genetic structure of local populations. The mating system is a plastic trait that varies with environmental conditions in the domestic cat (Felis catus) allowing an intraspecific comparison of the impact of this feature on genetic characteristics of the population. To assess the potential effect of the heterogenity of males' contribution to the next generation on variance effective size, we applied the ecological approach of Nunney & Elam (1994) based upon a demographic and behavioural study, and the genetic 'temporal methods' of Waples (1989) and Berthier et al. (2002) using microsatellite markers. The two cat populations studied were nearly closed, similar in size and survival parameters, but differed in their mating system. Immigration appeared extremely restricted in both cases due to environmental and social constraints. As expected, the ratio of effective size to census number (Ne/N) was higher in the promiscuous cat population (harmonic mean = 42%) than in the polygynous one (33%), when Ne was calculated from the ecological method. Only the genetic results based on Waples' estimator were consistent with the ecological results, but failed to evidence an effect of the mating system. Results based on the estimation of Berthier et al. (2002) were extremely variable, with Ne sometimes exceeding census size. Such low reliability in the genetic results should retain attention for conservation purposes. 相似文献

Scaling of folding times in Go models of proteins and of decoy structures with the Lennard-Jones potentials in the native contacts reveal power law trends when studied under optimal folding conditions. The power law exponent depends on the type of native geometry. Its value indicates lack of kinetic optimality in the model proteins. Tobacco use leads to 6 million deaths every year due to severe long‐lasting diseases. The main component of tobacco, nicotine, is recognized as one of the most addictive drugs, making smoking cessation difficult, even when 70 percent of smokers wish to do so. Clinical and preclinical studies have demonstrated consistently that nicotine seeking is a complex behavior involving various psychopharmacological mechanisms. Evidence supports that the population of smokers is heterogeneous, particularly as regards the breadth of motives that determine the urge to smoke. Here, we review converging psychological, genetic and neurobiological data from clinical and preclinical studies supporting that the mechanisms controlling nicotine seeking may vary from individual to individual. It appears timely that basic neuroscience integrates this heterogeneity to refine our understanding of the neurobiology of nicotine seeking, as tremendous progress has been made in modeling the various psychopharmacological mechanisms driving nicotine seeking in rodents. For a better understanding of the mechanisms that drive nicotine seeking, we emphasize the need for individual‐based research strategies in which nicotine seeking, and eventually treatment efficacy, are determined while taking into account individual variations in the mechanisms of nicotine seeking. 相似文献

Leg movements of stick insects (Carausius morosus) making turns towards visual targets are examined in detail, and a dynamic model of this behaviour is proposed. Initial results
suggest that front legs shape most of the body trajectory, while the middle and hind legs just follow external forces (Rosano
H, Webb B, in The control of turning in real and simulated stick insects, vol. 4095, pp 145–156, 2006). However, some limitations
of this explanation and dissimilarities in the turning behaviour of the insect and the model were found. A second set of behavioural
experiments was made by blocking front tarsi to further investigate the active role of the other legs for the control of turning.
The results indicate that it is necessary to have different roles for each pair of legs to replicate insect behaviour. We
demonstrate that the rear legs actively rotate the body while the middle legs move sideways tangentially to the hind inner
leg. Furthermore, we show that on average the middle inner and hind outer leg contribute to turning while the middle outer
leg and hind inner leg oppose body rotation. These behavioural results are incorporated into a 3D dynamic robot simulation.
We show that the simulation can now replicate more precisely the turns made by the stick insect.

The cost-benefit model for the evolution of carnivorous plants posits a trade-off between photosynthetic costs associated with carnivorous structures and photosynthetic benefits accrued through additional nutrient acquisition. The model predicts that carnivory is expected to evolve if its marginal benefits exceed its marginal costs. Further, the model predicts that when nutrients are scarce but neither light nor water is limiting, carnivorous plants should have an energetic advantage in competition with non-carnivorous plants. Since the publication of the cost-benefit model over 20 years ago, marginal photosynthetic costs of carnivory have been demonstrated but marginal photosynthetic benefits have not. A review of published data and results of ongoing research show that nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium often (co-)limit growth of carnivorous plants and that photosynthetic nutrient use efficiency is 20 - 50 % of that of non-carnivorous plants. Assessments of stoichiometric relationships among limiting nutrients, scaling of leaf mass with photosynthesis and nutrient content, and photosynthetic nutrient use efficiency all suggest that carnivorous plants are at an energetic disadvantage relative to non-carnivorous plants in similar habitats. Overall, current data support some of the predictions of the cost-benefit model, fail to support others, and still others remain untested and merit future research. Rather than being an optimal solution to an adaptive problem, botanical carnivory may represent a set of limited responses constrained by both phylogenetic history and environmental stress. 相似文献

Abstract: In an article on the role of temporal information in life-cycle assessment in this journal, Field and colleagues argued that frequently it is not the single product but the \"fleet\" (or cohort) of products that \"is the appropriate unit of analysis,\" and that in focusing on the fleet one \"explicitly introduces the notion of time as a critical element of comparative life-cycle assessments. …\" Major transitions, such as replacement of one fleet of products by an alternative fleet, correspond to a system in a transient rather than steady state, and explicit consideration of time is central to transient analysis.
One tool increasingly used as part of life-cycle assessment, economic input-output (EIO) analysis, at best deals with time in an implicit fashion. This article illustrates how the sequential interindustry model (SIM), a formulation of the EIOmodel that explicitly represents time, might be utilized in life-cycle assessment. AIMS: To assess the effect of different concentrations of gossypol (0, 2, 4, 10 and 20 mg l(-1)) in combination with NaCl and Na(2)SO(4) (20 mS cm(-1)) on the conidial germination and viability of Fusarium oxysporum f.sp. vasinfectum (Fov). METHODS AND RESULTS: A multinomial logistic model was developed to estimate the germination probability of Fov. The inhibitory effect was markedly evident at the two highest concentrations of gossypol; it varied among the isolates tested and with time, and it was attenuated by the presence of sodium salts. The inhibition was temporary as the germination probability increased after 8 h. Fluorescent staining revealed that gossypol either killed the conidia or retarded the elongation of the germ tubes. CONCLUSION: Fov showed the ability to overcome gossypol inhibition over time, and the inhibitory effect is reduced under saline conditions. Differential responses among Fov isolates to the presence of gossypol suggest that gossypol tolerance is genetically determined in the pathogen. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: This study suggests that selecting for high plant gossypol cultivars would have minimal effect on the overall Fov resistance of cotton. A new statistical model was developed to explore the statistical significance of plant-pathogen interactions. 相似文献
