That trade-offs result from the allocation of limited resources is a central concept of life history evolution. We quantified trade-offs between sexual and clonal reproduction in the aquatic plant, Butomus umbellatus, by experimentally manipulating sexual investment in two distinct nutrient environments. Increasing seed production caused a significant but nonlinear trade-off. Pollinating half of all flowers strongly reduced clonal bulbil production, but pollinating the remaining flowers did not cause any further trade-off. Trade-offs were not stronger under low nutrient conditions that clearly limited plant growth. Experimentally induced trade-offs were not reflected in negative phenotypic correlations between sexual and clonal allocation among plants within eight populations grown in a uniform greenhouse environment. Diminishing effects of increased sexual allocation plus a lack of accord between experimental manipulations and phenotypic correlations suggest that trade-offs between sexual and clonal reproduction are unlikely to constrain the evolution of reproductive strategy in this species.  相似文献

Summary Successful fundamental or basic research, while being stimulated by applied studies, provides the development of new technologies for the benefit of mankind. Photoautotrophic micropropagation or micropropagation using sugar-free medium is no exception from this generalization. The concept of photoautotrophic micropropagation is derived from research that revealed the relatively high photosynthetic abilities of chlorophyllous cultures such as leafy explants and plantlets in vitro. To meet the ever-increasing demand for quality transplants, the scaling-up of photoautotrophic micropropagation systems, for commercialization, has become necessary. This article reviews the recent advancement in the development and utilization of large culture vessels for photoautotrophic micropropagation with special emphasis on the feasibility of the system for the commercial-scale propagation. The review also includes choices for supporting material, ventilation type, planting density, vessel volume, and vessel sterilization procedure, and problems and solutions to achieve uniform growth in a large culture vessel. A case study of the commercial application of a photoautotrophic micropropagation system using large culture vessles, which recently has been established in Kunming, China, is also presented in this article.  相似文献

New directions and new questions raised in the study of health in the past justify this reanalysis of the pattern of dental attrition in the Medieval Danish population of Tirup. Dental attrition was scored on all permanent molars from the Tirup skeletal sample. Scores were analyzed by means of logistic regression of the probability of having entered a given stage of wear for a given tooth in a way that is very similar to transition analysis. The primary determinant of dental attrition was age at death. In addition to age, the effects of sex, side, and dating were analyzed. In order to assess the homogeneity of the process of wearing teeth down, a third-order polynomial in age-at-death was also fitted to the transition probabilities. It was found that age is the single most important determinant of dental attrition, and that sex or side did not differentiate the rate of attrition. In several transitions, there was evidence of heterogeneity, indicating both random and systematic interpersonal differences in the rate of attrition and an association between the rate of attrition and age-at-death. It was found that attrition proceeded more quickly after AD 1300 than prior to that date. It is suggested that this was due to a possible general deterioration of living conditions in Northern Europe and an increased reliance on grain for food during the first half of the 14th century. The temporal effect on attrition rate accounts for some but not all the observed heterogeneity wear.  相似文献

During the Neolithic, human health and lifestyle changed following the adoption of domesticated plants and animals and sedentism. This paper presents a study on human osteological remains from Alepotrypa Cave, an important and very well-preserved Late and Final Greek Neolithic site occupied from 5000-3200 BC. The Alepotrypa sample comes from primary and secondary burials as well as scattered bone, and consists of a minimum number of 161 individuals. It includes equal proportions of adults and subadults and males and females, is characterized by high child mortality, and falls within the range of other Neolithic sites in terms of age profiles and stature. The most frequent pathological conditions observed in this population are: 1) anemic conditions (cribra orbitalia and porotic hyperostosis), mild or healed in manifestation, most probably of nutritional origin, resulting from a poor diet focused on terrestrial resources such as domesticated cereals; 2) osteoarthritis and musculoskeletal stress markers, indicative of increased physical activity and heavy workloads; and 3) elevated prevalence of healed, depressed cranial fractures, serving as evidence of violent, nonlethal confrontations. Teeth exhibit a low prevalence of dental carries and linear enamel hypoplasia. The overall demographic, pathological, and behavioral results are consistent with observations of Neolithic populations elsewhere in Greece and the Mediterranean.  相似文献

This study assessed the effects of salinity and drought upon leaf construction (CC) and maintenance (MC) costs in Avicennia germinans growing under contrasting soil salinities in the field. Additionally, an analysis of leaf chemical composition was carried out to determine the underlying reasons for possible variation in CC. With the increase of external salinity, leaf osmotic potential (s) declined and a significant negative correlation was found between both variables. Changes in average CC were about 15 % when s changed by 85 %. Despite this, leaf ash-free heat of combustion per unit of leaf dry mass remained relatively constant at 21.3 ± 0.9 kJ g–1 in all conditions. The estimated maximum and minimum CC for the synthesis of protein present in leaves increased significantly with total leaf CC. Conversely, the estimated CC for lipid synthesis shows a tendency to decrease with total leaf CC. Under conditions of high salinity, ash content increased by 78 % compared to that of leaves collected at low salinity. It is concluded that undergoing changes in proteins and lipids (expensive) and ash (cheap) explain the changes in CC under contrasting salinities. Additionally, the average MC remained almost constant at moderate salinity and declined by 6 % under hyper-saline conditions. Thus, differences in CC and MC with salinity are explained in part by changes in the chemical composition of different compound fractions.  相似文献

Atherina presbyter is a common fish off the Canary Islands. Age, growth, reproduction, and mortality of the species are studied based on sampling carried out from July 1995 to June 1996. The parameters of the total length–total weight relationship are: a=0.004521, and b=3.0771. Otoliths age readings indicate that the sampled population consists of four age groups (0–III years). The von Bertalanffy growth parameters for all individuals are: L=122mm total length, k=0.79year–1, and t0=–0.21 years. Individuals grow quickly in their immature first year, attaining approximately 60% of their maximum length. After the first year, the annual growth rate drops rapidly, because the energy is probably diverted to reproduction. It is a gonochoristic species with no evidence of sexual dimorphism. The gonad is present as a single diffuse testis in males and as a single discrete ovary in females. The overall ratio of males to females is not significantly different from 1:1. The reproductive period of the species is protacted (February to June). The peak of the reproductive effort occurs in April–May. The size at first maturity is 68mm. The evaluation of epidemiological follow-up studies is frequently based on a comparison of the number O of deaths observed in the cohort from a specified cause with the expected number E calculated from person years in the cohort and mortality rates from a reference population. The ratio SMR = 100 x O/E is called the standardized mortality ratio (SMR). While person years can easily be calculated from the cohort and reference rates are generally available from the national statistical offices or the World Health Organization (WHO), problems can arise with the accessibility of the causes of death of the deceased study participants. However, the information that a person has died may be available, e.g., from population registers. In this paper, a statistical model for this situation is developed to derive a maximum likelihood (ML) estimator for the true (but unknown) number O* of deaths from a specified cause, which uses the known number O of deaths from this cause and the proportion p of all known causes of death among all decreased participants. It is shown that the standardized mortality ratio SMR* based on this estimated number is just SMR* = SMR/p. Easily computable confidence limits can be obtained by dividing the usual confidence limits of the SMR by the opposite limit of the proportion p. However, the confidence level alpha has to be adjusted appropriately.  相似文献

Theories for the evolution of aging rest on the assumption that at least some deleterious mutations have effects that are limited to certain ages. Many mutation accumulation studies have tried to measure the number and magnitude of deleterious mutations, but few studies have tried to determine the extent to which the effects of mutations are limited to particular ages. Here we estimate the age-specific effect of deleterious mutations on mortality rate in an outbred population of the fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster. We used the ‘middle class neighborhood’ approach to accumulation mutations in populations of flies that had recently been obtained from the wild. There are mutations that increase mortality rates, but whose effects are limited to specific ages. The age-specificity of mutational effects differs between the sexes, between virgin and mated flies, and over time. After 10 and 20 generations of mutation accumulation, there were clear age-specific effects of mutations. After 30 generations, however, the degree of age-specificity decreased. In addition, mutation accumulation led to a steady increase in larval mortality and a small but significant increase in the sex ratio of eclosing flies. We discuss the implications of these results for models of aging, and suggest approaches that future studies should take to obtain accurate information on the age-specificity of novel mutations. Timing of breeding and offspring size are maternal traits that may influence offspring competitive ability, dispersal, foraging, and vulnerability to predation and climatic conditions. To quantify the extent to which these maternal traits may ultimately affect an organism's fitness, we undertook laboratory and field experiments with Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar). To control for confounding effects caused by correlated traits, manipulations of the timing of fertilization combined with intraclutch comparisons were used. In the wild, a total of 1462 juveniles were marked at emergence from gravel nests. Recapture rates suggest that up to 83.5% mortality occurred during the first four months after emergence from the gravel nests, with the majority (67.5%) occurring during the initial period ending 17 days after median emergence. Moreover, the mortality was selective during this initial period, resulting in a significant phenotypic shift toward an earlier date of and an increased length at emergence. However, no significant selection differentials were detected thereafter, indicating that the critical episode of selection had occurred at emergence. Furthermore, standardized selection gradients indicated that selection was more intense on date of than on body size at emergence. Timing of emergence had additional consequences in terms of juvenile body size. Late-emerging juveniles were smaller than early-emerging ones at subsequent samplings, both in the wild and in parallel experiments conducted in seminatural stream channels, and this may affect success at subsequent size-selective episodes, such as winter mortality and reproduction. Finally, our findings also suggest that egg size had fitness consequences independent of the effects of emergence time that directly affected body size at emergence and, in turn, survival and size at later life stages. The causality of the maternal effects observed in the present study supports the hypothesis that selection on juvenile traits may play an important role in the evolution of maternal traits in natural populations.  相似文献
