The “balloon hairs” of L1 caterpillars of Lymantria dispar (Lep., Lymantriidae) are jointed, hollow and filled with a fluid. Detection of nicotine in the balloon hairs as well as feeding-deterrent effects of whole larvae and nicotine on ants indicate that these setae serve for defense against predatory arthropods and parasitoids but not for soaring of the larvae. The geomagnetic field (GMF) is an environmental cue that provides directional information for animals. The intensity of GMF is varied over space and time. Variations in the GMF intensity affect the navigation of animals and their physiology. In this study, the phototaxis of the migratory insect rice planthopper Nilaparvata lugens (N. lugens) and frataxin in N. lugens (Nl‐fh), which is a mitochondrial protein required for cellular iron homeostasis and iron‐sulfur cluster assembly, were investigated by using different intensities of magnetic field. From the results, individuals of N. lugens showed decreased phototaxis when reared and tested in a behavioral arena under a strong magnetic field. Besides the reduction in performance, an accompanying effect of the strong magnetic field condition was a reduced level of Nl‐fh‐messenger RNA, and a Nl‐fh knockdown indeed impaired the phototactic behavior in a tested sample of insects. This leads to the conclusion that the expression of frataxin is dependent on the strength of the surrounding magnetic field and that functional frataxin facilitates phototactic behavior in N. lugens. 相似文献

ABSTRACT Legal removal of migratory birds from the wild occurs for several reasons, including subsistence, sport harvest, damage control, and the pet trade. We argue that harvest theory provides the basis for assessing the impact of authorized take, advance a simplified rendering of harvest theory known as potential biological removal as a useful starting point for assessing take, and demonstrate this approach with a case study of depredation control of black vultures (Coragyps atratus) in Virginia, USA. Based on data from the North American Breeding Bird Survey and other sources, we estimated that the black vulture population in Virginia was 91,190 (95% credible interval = 44,520-212,100) in 2006. Using a simple population model and available estimates of life-history parameters, we estimated the intrinsic rate of growth (rmax) to be in the range 7–14%, with 10.6% a plausible point estimate. For a take program to seek an equilibrium population size on the conservative side of the yield curve, the rate of take needs to be less than that which achieves a maximum sustained yield (0.5 × rmax). Based on the point estimate for rmax and using the lower 60% credible interval for population size to account for uncertainty, these conditions would be met if the take of black vultures in Virginia in 2006 was <3,533 birds. Based on regular monitoring data, allowable harvest should be adjusted annually to reflect changes in population size. To initiate discussion about how this assessment framework could be related to the laws and regulations that govern authorization of such take, we suggest that the Migratory Bird Treaty Act requires only that take of native migratory birds be sustainable in the long-term, that is, sustained harvest rate should be <rmax. Further, the ratio of desired harvest rate to 0.5 X rmax may be a useful metric for ascertaining the applicability of specific requirements of the National Environmental Protection Act. 相似文献

Open landfills seem to be playing an increasing role as target feeding areas for several species, not only in their breeding areas or during the winter, but also during the migration period. Evaluating the extent to which landfill sites are used by migrants is crucial to understanding their role in driving stopover decisions during migration, and in the potential health risks linked to feeding on refuse. The aim of this study was to evaluate the role of two open landfills located just before (France) and after (Spain) the East‐Atlantic flyway enters Iberia through the western Pyrenees as potentially important stopover sites for the White Stork populations moving along this route. Overall, we detected that these sites were used by storks that had been ringed from many western European breeding populations, mainly during the migration period, but also in winter. The mean distance between the stork breeding/ringing origin and the landfill sites increased from summer to winter, suggesting that storks breeding further away pass through Iberia later in the season, reflecting population‐specific timing of migration. During the autumn migration period (August–September), the first encountered landfill in France was estimated to be used by c. 1200 storks, and the other in Spain by 4000 storks. Our study hence contributes to a better understanding of the current and potentially hazardous role played by landfill sites in White Stork ecology, which is essential in order to provide management recommendations, and to evaluate the consequences of proposed open landfill closures in Europe. 相似文献

Humpback whales migrate seasonally from high latitude feeding areas to lower latitude breeding areas for mating and calving. In 2004–2006, a North Pacific basin‐wide study called SPLASH was conducted as an international collaboration among various groups of researchers. The Russian Far East consists of multiple high latitude feeding areas and during SPLASH, 102 whales were identified and compared to catalogs from breeding areas. Our goal in this study was to further investigate the migratory destinations of whales from the Russian Far East using a total of 1,459 photographs of whales identified from 2004 to 2014. We compared the latest Russian catalog with the SPLASH catalog from wintering areas (2004–2006) and with two additional regional catalogs from Okinawa (1989–2006) and the northern Philippines (2000–2006). We found a total of 152 matches: 106 with Asian, 35 with Hawaiian, and 11 with Mexican breeding grounds. The match rate was higher in mainland Kamchatka and consisted mostly of whales from the Asian breeding ground. In the Commander Islands, the proportion of whales from Asia was twice that of Hawaii and six times higher than Mexico. The total match rate was low, supporting the hypothesis of some undiscovered humpback whale breeding location in the North Pacific. 相似文献

Research on evolutionary forces determining optimal body sizes has primarily relied on experimental evaluation of respective selective pressures. Accounting for among‐species variation through application of phylogenetic comparative methods is a complementary although little used approach. It enables the direct association of body size values with particular environments. Using phylogenetically explicit comparative analyses, we show that small body size is associated with diurnal (rather than nocturnal) activity of adults among temperate species of the moth family Geometridae. The association of an exclusively adult trait with species‐specific body size suggests that optimal body sizes are at least partly determined by the costs being a large adult, as opposed to the more frequently considered costs of attaining large size. It appears likely that size‐selective predation by insectivorous birds is the primary factor responsible for selection against large body size in day‐flying moths. 相似文献

A structure-activity relationship study of Hez-PBAN was performed with respect to its pheromonotropic activity, using Heliothis peltigera as the test animal. The activity of N- and C-terminally derived sequences was examined in a time- and dose-dependent mode. Using a variety of Hez-PBAN-derived fragments at two doses (1 and 10 pmol) and at different times post-injection (5–120 min), we were able to demonstrate that peptides lacking 12 and 16 amino acids from their N-terminus are as potent as the full length PBAN, and that the C-terminally derived hexapeptide was capable of stimulating sex pheromone production to a similar extent as PBAN 1–33NH2, when its activity was analyzed at shorter post-injection times. Within the C-terminal sequence, the amide was found to play a crucial role. In addition, it was observed that the region between amino acids 9 and 13 is important for the biological activity of the full length PBAN. The fact that the pheromonotropic activity of the hexapeptide was similar to that of the full length PBAN, under specific conditions, suggests that this sequence constitutes the biologically active site of the neuropeptide. The discovery that PBAN-derived peptides reacted in a time- and dose-dependent mode, strengthens the assumption that proteolytic enzymes interfere with the pheromonotropic activity of the PBAN-derived fragments. The ability of a variety of peptides to stimulate sex pheromone biosynthesis suggests two possible mechanisms: (1) Existence of multiple pheromonotropic mechanisms which may be mediated by multiple PBAN receptors that are activated at different kinetics; (2) Existence of only one mechanism mediated by short C-terminally derived peptides. In the first case, the C-terminally derived sequences fulfill the conformational requirement of only one class of receptors, and other regions in the PBAN molecule (e.g., 9–13) fulfill the conformational requirements of a second (or other) class of receptors. In the second case, the C-terminally derived sequence is the only conformationally important sequence, and other sequences, which were found to be essential for the biological activity, serve other non-conformational purposes (e.g., protection against proteolytic degradation). © 1995 Wiley-Liss, Inc. 相似文献

Abstract.
- 1 Outbreaks of tussock moths (Orygia verusta Bdv.) on bush lupines (Lupinus arboreus Sims) may be very intense, although spatially localized, and may last >10 years. To understand better how such outbreaks may persist, we defoliated lupine bushes using variable realistic numbers of tussock moth larvae, and measured the immediate and delayed impacts of defoliation on the growth and seed production of lupine bushes.
- 2 Immediate effects of defoliation included the production of new leaves that were significantly smaller in diameter and biomass, and lower in water content, than the new leaves of undamaged bushes. Also, seed output was reduced by up to 80% on heavily damaged bushes.
- 3 In the longer term, surviving bushes recovered remarkably well, despite having received the full range of possible (survivable) insect densities. After 1 or 2 years’rapid growth, surviving bushes were not affected in terms of height, basal stem diameter or volume by their previous defoliation. However, there was a significant tendency for juvenile bushes to produce more seeds the more heavily they had been attacked the previous year.
- 4 The ability of the host plant to recover, in terms of its biomass, helps to explain the sustained nature of the insect outbreak.

Abstract.
- 1 It is possible to correlate distinct sequences of flight behaviour in caged females of the migrant butterfly Pieris brassicae with the main flight direction of released individuals of the same stock. The attempts to escape out of the cage point to the same mean direction as the flights of the released butterflies. This provides an experimental tool to investigate some unsolved questions concerning migration behaviour.
- 2 This study examines the constancy of the flight direction of a group of butterflies, the specificity of the direction in two populations of different geographical origin, and the frequently reported change in flight direction of subsequent generations.
- 3 The results indicate that the main flight direction of a tested group is very constant during 2 days of observation. Different directions have been detected in populations originating from Northern Germany and Southern France, respectively. The preferred directions are discussed as an adaptation to the geographical circumstances. Subsequent generations of the population from Northern Germany also show different directions. The spring generation flies to the north, the autumn generation in the opposite direction. This result corresponds to field observations that in P.brassicae a return flight occurs in subsequent generations of a year.

Information on the reproductive behaviour and population structure of female hawksbill turtles, Eretmochelys imbricata , is necessary to define conservation priorities for this highly endangered species. Two hypotheses to explain female nest site choice, natal homing and social facilitation, were tested by analyzing mtDNA control region sequences of 103 individuals from seven nesting colonies in the Caribbean and western Atlantic. Under the social facilitation model, newly mature females follow older females to a nesting location, and subsequently use this site for future nesting. This model generates an expectation that female lineages will be homogenized among regional nesting colonies. Contrary to expectations of the social facilitation model, mtDNA lineages were highly structured among western Atlantic nesting colonies. These analyses identified at least 6 female breeding stocks in the Caribbean and western Atlantic and support a natal homing model for recruitment of breeding females. Reproductive populations are effectively isolated over ecological time scales, and recovery plans for this species should include protection at the level of individual nesting colonies. 相似文献
