In the past great efforts have been made to gain a thorough understanding of the processes involved in carbon fixation but the fate of the acquired carbon has been somewhat neglected, although this aspect is crucial for improving yield performance without diminishing the quality of the harvested organs. To contribute to the crucial debate on that topic the aim of the present study was to propose some unbiased components concerning in particular grain legumes: ‘Is there any antagonism between high yield and increased nutritional quality, with a focus on protein content?’ An original approach has been used to study the impact of the modification of seed composition on the crop production, which combines theoretical calculations of energetic cost and field yield data. When applied to a wide range of species with varying seed composition, a plurispecific negative relationship between the theoretical carbon costs of seed production and the observed yields was demonstrated. The high-throughput of genetic markers could result in large-scale screening of seed quality parameters and such studies, while evaluating the impact of seed composition on crop yield, could also be used to provide data to forecast the economic impact of a new line with an original composition compared with its economically enhanced value.  相似文献

Six condition indices based on RNA, total soluble protein and two metabolic enzymes [lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and citrate synthase (CS)] were analysed in muscle tissue of individual larvae, post-flexion reared sea bass Dicentrarchus labrax using DNA and total soluble protein as standards for size. In addition, the effect of 2 days of food deprivation on the cell proliferation rates was assessed. The RNA:DNA best reflected short-term changes in feeding conditions. If standardized by DNA content, LDH activity was a better indicator of condition than any other index but RNA:DNA. Further, the analysis of cell proliferation rates in muscle from 26 day-old larvae proved useful in distinguishing continuously fed larvae from individuals subjected to 2 days of fast.  相似文献

In temperate climates, Pustula tragopogonis is rarely found on cultivated sunflower. In Europe, it was so far of little economic impact on other Asteraceae, except for some regions in the Mediterranean. In 2003, P. tragopogonis was found for the first time in sunflower fields in southern Germany. The pathogen has a widespread occurrence there, especially in the region around Stuttgart, BW. Fatty acid profiling, ultrastructural investigation and ITS sequencing revealed a high similarity to an 2002 isolate from southern Africa and an 2005 isolate from Australia, but revealed significant differences to P. tragopogonis s.l. on Cirsium arvense, a common weed, growing on or in the vicinity of sunflower fields in Germany. P. tragopogonis from this host can therefore be excluded from being the source of the reported infection.  相似文献

冬小麦“农大139”经40天左右的春化处理才能迅速而整齐地抽穗,但经14—21天低温处理,已经具有在夏季抽穗的可能性,虽然抽穗推迟且极不整齐;再将春化时间延长,则抽穗百分比增加,且从播种到抽穗的时间缩短。这表明,春化过程中低温对发育的作用有两种效应:前期低温是诱发生理状态的转变,后期低温则只具有加速发育的作用,两个时期的转变是在春化的中期。蛋白质合成抑制剂乙基硫氨酸和对-氟苯丙氨酸能抑制冬小麦的春化,抑制时期也是在春化过程的中期。不同时间低温处理后冬小麦幼芽中可溶性蛋白质含量及组成发生了变化,春化过程中期(低温处理14天之后)不仅含量比对照增加了一倍,而且有新的蛋白质谱带出现。春麦中无类似现象,未经低温处理的春麦已含有冬麦中新出现的谱带。说明冬小麦春化过程的第14—21天左右是与春化过程有关的蛋白质合成的关键时期,该时期新合成的蛋白质与植株的发育状态之间存在着密切的相关关系。  相似文献

Epilepsy is an ancient disorder which treatment over the centuries has been guided by preconceptions regarding its origin. The major improvements in epilepsy management came following the discovery of the EEG and the development of seizure suppressing agents. These advances in diagnosis and anticonvulsant therapy have further ingrained the conviction that epilepsy is a disease of neurons. Evidence presented here is intended to support a different point of view which suggests that the metabolic modifications in epileptogenic tissue denote subtle alterations in the anatomical and biochemical relationship between neurons and their glial envelopes. As a result the extracellular environment of these cells contain higher than normal levels of glutamic acid. This creates an unnatural functional connectivity between neurons so that they establish abnormal synchronous activity between them and become hyperexcitable due to the depolarizing milieu. To compensate for these biochemical changes it is suggested that some thought might be given to epilepsy management by metabolic manipulation. The measures should be directed specifically towards improving the ability of glia to remove glutamic acid from the extracellular milieu. Two obvious possibilities are to enhance glial glutamine synthesis and to improve the interstitial wash-out of glutamic acid in epileptogenic epicenters. Such a therapy would anticipate to gradually diminish seizure incidence and susceptibility without, however, having a direct action on convulsive episodes per se. Since chemical modulation of gap junctional intercellular communication has been implicated in several toxicological endpoints, a study to examine the ability of several biological toxins to inhibit this process was undertaken. Eight biological toxins were tested for their ability to inhibit metabolic cooperation, a measure of gap-junctional intercellular communication, in the Chinese V79 cell system. Aplysiatoxin, anhydrodebromoaplysiatoxin and debromoaplysiatoxin showed the strongest ability to inhibit metabolic cooperation while T2-toxin and vomitoxin inhibited metabolic cooperation to a lesser degree. Afatoxin B1, afatoxin B2 and palytoxin were inactive in the Chinese V79 system. Allometric methods can be used to test quantitative theories of the relationship between brain size and body size across species, and to search for ecological, behavioural, life history, and ontogenetic correlates of brain size. Brain size scales with an allometric exponent of around 0.75 against body size across mammals, but is closer to 0.56 for birds and for reptiles. The slope of the allometric line often varies depending upon the taxonomic level of analysis. However, this phenomenon, at least in mammals, may be a statistical artifact. Brain size for a given body size (relative brain size) varies among orders in birds and mammals, and some dietary associations with relative brain size have been found in particular taxa. Developmental status at birth is the most consistent correlate of relative brain size: precocial neonates have larger brains for a given maternal size than altricial neonates in both birds and mammals. Altricial neonates, however, have more brain growth following birth, and in birds also have larger relative adult brain sizes. Energetic explanations for differences in neonatal brain growth, although attractive on theoretical grounds, have largely failed to stand up to empirical tests.  相似文献

We attempted to indicate the requirements for biomedical applications of SIMS microscopy. Sample preparation methodology should preserve both the structural and the chemical integrity of the tissue. Furthermore, it is often necessary to correlate ionic and light microscope images. This implies a common methodological approach to sample preparation for both microscopes. The use of low or high mass resolution depends on the elements studied and their concentrations. To improve the acquisition and processing of images, digital imaging systems have to be designed and require both ionic and optical image superimposition. However, the images do not accurately reflect element concentration; a relative quantitative approach is possible by measuring secondary ion beam intensity. Using an internal reference element (carbon) and standard curves the results are expressed in micrograms/mg of tissue. Despite their limited lateral resolution (0.5 microns) the actual SIMS microscopes are very suitable for the resolution of biomedical problems posed by action modes and drug localization in human pathology. SIMS microscopy should provide a new tool for metabolic radiotherapy by facilitating dose evaluation. The advent of high lateral resolution SIMS imaging (less than 0.1 microns) should open up new fields in biomedical investigation.  相似文献
