Nanosized plastics are an emerging concern in freshwater ecosystems, raising the question whether they put freshwater ecological processes at risk. Litter decomposition is a major ecological function in forested streams which is mainly driven by aquatic hyphomycetes. Here we investigated whether increasing concentrations (up to 102.4 mg/L) of nanosized polystyrene plastics (NPPs; 100nm) affect litter decomposition by five widely distributed species of aquatic hyphomycetes. Results showed that average litter decomposition decreased by 8% relative to the control when exposed to 102.4 mg/L NPPs. Aquatic hyphomycete species differed in their sensitivity to NPPs. The greatest inhibition of litter decomposition was found with Tetracladium marchalianum, where it dropped from 37 (control) to 16% (102.4 mg/L of NPP). Overall our study highlights the emerging risks and potential dangers of NPPs to freshwater ecosystem functioning. It also indicates that the impact of NPPs may be species specific. 相似文献

Climate change may impact the distribution of species by shifting their ranges to higher elevations or higher latitudes. The impacts on alpine plant species may be particularly profound due to a potential lack of availability of future suitable habitat. To identify how alpine species have responded to climate change during the past century as well as to predict how they may react to possible global climate change scenarios in the future, we investigate the climatic responses of seven species of Meconopsis, a representative genus endemic in the alpine meadow and subnival region of the Himalaya–Hengduan Mountains. We analyzed past elevational shifts, as well as projected shifts in longitude, latitude, elevation, and range size using historical specimen records and species distribution modeling under optimistic (RCP 4.5) and pessimistic (RCP 8.5) scenarios across three general circulation models for 2070. Our results indicate that across all seven species, there has been an upward shift in mean elevation of 302.3 m between the pre‐1970s (1922–1969) and the post‐1970s (1970–2016). The model predictions suggest that the future suitable climate space will continue to shift upwards in elevation (as well as northwards and westwards) by 2070. While for most of the analyzed species, the area of suitable climate space is predicted to expand under the optimistic emission scenario, the area contracts, or, at best, shows little change under the pessimistic scenario. Species such as M. punicea, which already occupy high latitudes, are consistently predicted to experience a contraction of suitable climate space across all the models by 2070 and may consequently deserve particular attention by conservation strategies. Collectively, our results suggest that the alpine high‐latitude species analyzed here have already been significantly impacted by climate change and that these trends may continue over the coming decades. 相似文献

Signal divergence is an important process underpinning the diversification of lineages. Research has shown that signal divergence is greatest in species pairs that possess high geographic range overlap. However, the influence of range‐size differences within pairs is less understood. We investigated how these factors have shaped signal divergence within brightly coloured coral reef butterflyfishes (genus: Chaetodon). Using a novel digital imaging methodology, we quantified both colouration and pattern using 250 000 sample points on each fish image. Surprisingly, evolutionary age did not affect colour pattern dissimilarity between species pairs, with average differences arising in just 300 000 years. However, the effect of range overlap and range symmetry was significant. Species‐pair colour patterns become more different with increasing overlap, but only when ranges are similar in size. When ranges differ markedly in area, species‐pair colour patterns become more similar with increasing overlap. This suggests that species with small ranges may maintain non‐colour‐based species boundaries. 相似文献

For over 40 years, management of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park (GBRMP) in Australia has focused on limiting human‐use impacts to facilitate natural resilience and recovery. Compounding acute disturbances and chronic stressors have resulted in degradation of coral reef habitats in many areas of the Marine Park. Given current trends and predictions of escalating climate‐driven disturbances, it is increasingly evident that effective management of the GBRMP requires adaptive and novel approaches to protect and restore coral reef health. Here, we provide an overview of the logistical requirements and early‐stage ecological benefits of repositioning 400 tonnes of moderately sized (1–3 m diameter) Porites spp. coral colonies (bommies) that were displaced by cyclone‐generated swells that impacted reefs in the Whitsunday Islands during March 2017. An ecological survey conducted 16 months after the bommie repositioning revealed that several genera of hard coral had settled onto the bommies and that a range of reef fish species were associating with the restored habitat. Early findings suggest that the repositioning of the displaced bommies has assisted in restoring reef habitat structure and settlement habitat for juvenile corals, while improving natural aesthetics, vessel access and tourist experiences at Manta Ray Bay. 相似文献

ABSTRACTBackground: Tropical mountain ecosystems of the Northern Andes have long fascinated researchers because of the unique conditions associated with cold climates in equatorial latitudes. More than six decades have elapsed since the beginning of systematic ecological research in the Venezuelan páramos, making them one of the best-studied tropical alpine regions in the world.Aims: We review the conceptual development and state of the art of ecological research in the Venezuelan páramos, with emphasis on environmental and plant ecology research, presenting a general framework for the studies included in this special issue.Methods: We provide a historical sketch of the periods that have marked ecological studies in the Venezuelan páramos. Then, we synthesise research on environmental drivers, plant population and community ecology, ecosystem functioning, the response of the páramo to climate change and human disturbance; we finally consider agroecology and conservation.Results and conclusions: This review demonstrates the significant contributions made to alpine ecology in key areas such as biodiversity/ecosystem function changes during succession, nutrient cycling, species interactions and socio-ecological research. We indicate the need to develop a more integrated view of the links between evolutionary processes, functional diversity, community dynamics and ecosystem services both in natural and human-impacted areas. 相似文献

A phylogeographic study of the circumtropical glasseye Heteropriacanthus cruentatus was conducted. Molecular analyses indicate two mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (coI) lineages that are 10·4% divergent: one in the western Atlantic (Caribbean) and another that was detected across the Indo‐Pacific. A fixed single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) was detected at a nuclear locus (S7 ribosomal protein) and is consistent with this finding. There is evidence of recent dispersal from the Atlantic to the Indian Ocean with individuals of mixed lineages detected in South Africa and the Mozambique Channel. Using coalescent analyses of the mitochondrial dataset, time of divergence between lineages was estimated to be c. 15·3 million years. The deep divergence between these two lineages indicates distinct evolutionary units, however, due to the lack of morphological differences and evidence of hybridization between lineages, taxonomic revision is not suggested at this time. 相似文献

The Cambrian Series 3 Zhangxia Formation in Shandong Province, North China, includes small‐scale lithistid sponge–microbial reefs. The lithistid sponges grew on oolitic and bioclastic sediments, which were stabilized by microbial activities. The relative abundances of microbial components (e.g. calcimicrobe Epiphyton and stromatolites) vary among the reefs. However, the microbial components commonly encrusted or bound the lithistid sponges, formed remarkable encrustations on the surfaces of the sponges. Epiphyton especially grew upward and downward. The lithistid sponges thus provided substrates for the attachment and development of microbes, and the microbes played essential roles as consolidators, by encrusting reef‐building sponges. Additionally, the lithistid sponges were prone to degradation via microbial activities and diagenetic processes, and were thus preserved as micritic bodies, showing faint spicular networks or abundant spicules. Such low preservation potential within the reef environment obscured the presence of the sponges and their widespread contribution as reef‐building organisms during the Cambrian. During the prolonged interval after the demise of archaeocyaths, purely microbial reefs, such as stromatolites and thrombolites have been considered to be the principal reef builders, in association with rare lithistid sponge–microbial associations. However, recent findings, including those from Shandong Province and Korea, suggest that the lithistid sponge‐bearing reefs were more extensive during the Epoch 3 to the Furongian than previously thought. These lithistid sponge–microbial reefs were precursors of the sponge–microbial reefs that dominated worldwide in the Early Ordovician. 相似文献
