Our previous field studies suggested that the two chiral centers in the sex pheromone of pink hibiscus mealybug, Maconellicoccus hirsutus, could elicit different male responses. The chiral center in the acid moiety of the pheromone seemed to be more critical than the alcohol portion of the pheromone molecule for attractiveness. The objective of the current study was to test this hypothesis by deploying stereoisomeric blends in pheromone traps. Captures of male M. hirsutus showed that pheromone with the naturally occurring (R)-maconelliyl (S)-2-methylbutanoate and (R)-lavandulyl (S)-2-methylbutanoate [R-S configuration] was most attractive and that pheromone with the unnatural S-S configuration was less attractive. In addition, the RS-R blend (containing R-R and S-R stereoisomers) yielded captures of male M. hirsutus that were comparable to blank controls, and an inhibitory effect was observed when R-R and S-R were combined with naturally occurring R-S blend. These results suggest a unique chirality recognition mechanism; olfactory discrimination among different pheromone stereoisomers depends upon both asymmetric centers. The S configuration on the acid moiety elicits attraction, whereas the R configuration induces inhibition. However, the attractive activity shows some degree of tolerance toward chirality change in the alcohol portion of the pheromone molecules.  相似文献

Abstract  The first Australian records of mango shield scale ( Milviscutulus mangiferae ) from north Queensland and additional records from parts of Papua New Guinea are presented. The majority of specimens were collected from mango leaves ( Mangifera indica ). A summary of its known distribution, other hosts, identification and damage levels is also presented. Also, the detection of rice mealybug ( Brevennia rehi ) in far north Queensland is reported for the first time. This pest is known to occur in the Northern Territory. The north Queensland detections are from native grasses. The records presented here, for both species, are regarded as new detections, rather than new incursions.  相似文献

In Pakistan, the cotton mealybug, Phenacoccus solenopsis Tinsley (Sternorrhyncha (Homoptera): Pseudococcidae), is a serious pest of many cultivated plants. A parasitoid, Aenasius bambawalei Hayat (Hymenoptera: Encyrtidae), is associated with P. solenopsis. In order to mass rear A. bambawalei for a biological control programme, it is important to investigate the parasitoid’s host stage preference and its parasitism behaviour for P. solenopsis in order to optimise production. The present study showed that under both choice and no-choice conditions, the parasitoid preferred third instar and pre-reproductive host stage mealybugs for parasitism. Parasitoid larva developing inside the host exhibited a greater longevity, shorter developmental period and longer body size in these preferred host stages. Our study also confirmed that A. bambawalei showed no attraction to male mealybugs and no host feeding on any host stage was recorded. The ability of the parasitoid to effectively discriminate between suitable and non-suitable stages means that it is feasible to rear it on a mixed population.  相似文献

Life table studies were conducted to assess the effect of constant temperature on the rate of population growth of the cassava mealybug, Phenacoccus manihoti Matile-Ferrero. Four temperatures, between 20 and 30.5°C, were tested. An inverse relationship was observed between temperature and most demographic parameters.The intrinsic rate of natural increase (rm) increased from 0.1 at 20°C to 0.2 at 27°C and 30.5°C. The net reproductive rate varied between 426.3 at 30.5°C and 584.7 at 20°C. The mealybug population reached 50% mortality after 37.5, 21.5, 19.0 and 19.0 days respectively at 20, 23.5, 27 and 30.5°C. The results indicate that P. manihoti can persist and increase in numbers within the range between 20 and 30.5°C.
Influence de températures constantes sur les taux de croissance de populations de la cochenille du manioc Phenococcus manihoti
Résumé Des tables de vie ont été établies pour déterminer l'effet de températures constantes sur les taux de croissance de populations de la cochenille du manioc, Phenacoccus manihoti Mat.-Ferr., et ainsi comprendre les changements au sein des populations du ravageur dans les champs et mener à bien le programme de lutte biologique organisé à l'I.I.T.A. contre cette cochenille. P. manihoti, introduit à partir de l'Amérique latine en Afrique, y menace la production du manioc (Manihot esculenta Crantz).Le taux intrinsèque d'accroissement natural (rm) a augmenté de 0.114 à 20°C, à 0.185 à 27°C, avant de descendre à 0.182 à 30.5°C. Le taux net de reproduction (Ro) a été relativement élevé (426–584 oeufs femelles/génération). Dans nos conditions expérimentales, la mortalité a atteint 50% au bout de 37.5, 21.5, 19.0 jours respectivement à 20, 23.5, 27 et 30.5°C. La durée du cycle et le coefficient d'accroissement () étaient inversement liés à la température. Le ravageur possède la capacité de doubler sa population en 6.08 jours à 20°C alors que 3.81 jours seulement suffisent pour doubler la population à 30.5°C.Ces résultats nous ont permis de comprendre et d'expliquer l'énorme pouvoir de pullulation de la cochenille observé dans les champs pendant la saison sèche; il s'ensuit que les lâchers des entomophages produits en élevages doivent se faire très tôt au début de la saison sèche, afin de contrecarrer la grande fertilité et la capacité d'augmentation rapide des populations de P. manihoti.

In unifested fields, 80 cassava tips were artificially infested with 0, 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, or 64 third instars, and 20 or 100 eggs of cassava mealybug,Phenacoccus manihoti Matile-Ferrero (Hom., Pseudococcidae). Another 80 uninfested tips served as a control. Tips were arranged in a circle of 28 m diameter, in the centre of which the following exotic natural enemies ofP. manihoti were released:Apoanagyrus (Epidinocarsis) lopezi De Santis andA. diversicornis (Howard) (Hym., Encyrtidae),Hyperaspis notata (Mulsant) andDiomus hennesseyi Fürsch (Col., Coccinellidae), and others. This experiment was repeated six times. During the 4–14 days following release, all experimental tips were inspected at two-hour intervals during each day and the presence of exotic as well as indigenous natural enemies, likeExochomus troberti Mulsant (Col., Coccinellidae), ants and spiders was noted. The experiment was repeated six times measured the aggregative response by the natural enemies to different host densities, achieved through host attractance and arrestment. All exotic natural enemies, except the males ofApoanagyrus spp., were fast attracted to the host colonies. As compared to the control tips, they concentrated on the infested tips about 50-fold for the twoApoanagyrus spp. and 10 to 20-fold for the exotic coccinellids. By contrast, non-coevolved indigenous coccinellids, as well as generalist predators like ants and spiders were attracted to the infested tips only 2 to 5-fold.A. lopezi responded best to different host densities, followed byA. diversicornis and the coccinellids, followed by ants and spiders. None of the parasitoids or predators was particularly attracted to egg masses. These results correspond closely to the known efficiencies of these natural enemies,A. lopezi standing out among all candidates. The results of such aggregation studies are compared with those of life-table studies.  相似文献

Honeydew produced by hemipterans is known as a possible kairomonal resource for parasitoids. The application of artificial honeydew effectively improves the performance of natural enemies. Aenasius bambawalei is a particularly dominant and aggressive endoparasitoid of the invasive mealybug Phenacoccus solenopsis. Our previous study showed that tending by the ghost ant Tapinoma melanocephalum significantly reduced the parasitism of A. bambawalei. We hypothesize that ghost ant tending influences host location of parasitoids by manipulating the composition of the honeydew produced by mealybugs. In this study, we tested whether the honeydew composition differs between treatments with and without ant attendance and whether changes in the honeydew influence the performance of A. bambawalei. Our results show that the sucrose concentration increased significantly in the ant‐attendance treatment but decreased when ant attendance was switched to an ant‐exclusion treatment; the inverse was true for the glucose concentration. Compared with the plastic honeydew treatment (mealybug with ant attendance), parasitoids spent much more time searching, had longer lifespans and showed higher parasitism on filter papers treated with natural honeydew (mealybug without any pre‐treatment) and those treated with convalescent honeydew (mealybug having experienced ant attendance and then switched to ant exclusion). These results support the hypothesis that ant tending influences the performance of parasitoids by manipulating honeydew composition.  相似文献

Infestation of sugar cane nodes by the mealybug Saccharicoccus sacchari (Cockerell) was studied in two commercial fields over a 7-month period in 1987. Natural enemies associated with S. sacchari were fungi Aspergillus parasiticus Speare, Metarhizium anisopliae (Metschnikoff) Sorokin, and Penicillium spp.; the dipteran Cacoxenus perspicax Knab; and the hymenopteran parasitoid Anagyrus saccharicola Timberlake. A. parasiticus was the predominent natural enemy of S. sacchari whereas all other natural enemies showed a low level of activity. The highest prevalence of A. parasiticus was in March when it occurred on 84% of S. sacchari-infested nodes. The prevalence of A. parasiticus declined rapidly during April and May and was absent in the winter months during which nodal infestation of S. sacchari increased. In laboratory bioassays all fungal isolates originating from S. sacchari were more virulent at 28°C than at 24°C. Laboratory studies supported the hypothesis based on field observations that temperature highly influenced the efficacy of A. parasiticus against S. sacchari.  相似文献

Abstract:  Planococcus ficus (Signoret) and Planococcus citri (Risso) (Hom., Pseudococcidae) are important phytophagous components in different agroecosystems. The two species may coexist in the same environment and are most difficult to distinguish by morphological features. The aim of this study was to find genetic markers suitable for distinguishing P. ficus from P. citri , to assist in the rapid identification of field specimens. By using synthetic sex pheromone-baited traps, pure male populations of both species were collected from a vineyard and from a citrus orchard in northern Sardinia, Italy. Individual males of citrus and vine mealybugs were preliminarily examined by the random amplification of polymorphic DNA (RAPD) technique. Among twelve 10-mer random primers, the oligonucleotide OPL-12 generated several markers suitable for distinguishing between the two species. This primer was then used to characterize individual males and females of both mealybug species collected near pheromone-baited traps in vineyards and orange orchards from different geographic areas. Reference samples from other regions of southern Italy were also included. A clear differentiation of the two species was accomplished according to their pattern of amplification, thus confirming a high level of intra-specific genetic homogeneity. Consequently, two fragments of the cytochrome c oxidase I gene from P. citri and P. ficus were compared and two pairs of species-specific polymerase chain reaction (PCR) primers were developed based on diverging sequences. These primers allowed sensitive and reliable PCR identification of both males and females of P. citri and of P. ficus of different geographic origin.  相似文献

In lecanoid Coccids, or mealybugs, the male development is accompanied by the facultative heterochromatization of the entire, paternally derived, haploid chromosome set. This epigenetic phenomenon occurs in all the cells of mid-cleavage male embryos. Consequently, the Coccid chromosome system offers a powerful tool for gaining insights into the structure of facultative heterochromatin, and into the epigenetic mechanisms of its imprinted, developmentally regulated formation. This paper will present new data and summarize recent studies on genomic imprinting and facultative heterochromatization in mealybugs. First, the existence and the possible role of DNA methylation as an epigenetic modification that fulfills the requisites of the imprinting process in mealybugs will be considered. The second part of this paper will focus on proteins involved in the facultative heterochromatization process. In particular, the involvement of an HP-1-like protein in the silencing of the paternally derived haploid chromosome set and its interaction with the lysine 9 methylated isoform of histone H3 will be discussed.  相似文献
