The Asian long‐horned beetle (ALB) is one of the most important wood‐boring insects worldwide that damages broad‐leaved trees, primarily poplar, willow, elm and maple. Based on the color of the spots on the elytra, the beetles are separated into white‐spotted (ALB‐W) and yellow‐spotted (ALB‐Y) Asian long‐horned beetles. In order to clarify the morphology of sensilla on antenna, maxillary palp and labial palp of ALB‐W and ALB‐Y larvae, we studied the typology, morphology, number and distribution of the sensilla by scanning electron microscopy. The results showed that: (i) the antennae of two biotypes had five types of sensilla, including three types of sensilla basiconica (b.) and two types of sensilla twig basiconica (s.tb); numbers of b.1, b.2, b.3 and s.tb1 on antenna were not significantly different (P > 0.05) between two biotypes, and the numbers of s.tb2 were significantly different (P < 0.05); (ii) the maxillary palp of two biotypes had four types of sensilla, including sensilla styloconica (st.), two types of s.tb and digitiform sensilla (ds.); the numbers of st. and ds. on the maxillary palp were not significantly different (P > 0.05) between two biotypes, and the numbers of s.tb1 and s.tb2 were significantly different (P < 0.05); (iii) the labial palp of two biotypes had four types of sensilla, including b., st. and two types of s.tb, and the numbers of b.3, st., s.tb1 and s.tb2 on the labial palp were not significantly different (P > 0.05) between two biotypes. We discuss the relationships between sensilla and damage caused by the larvae inside the host trees.  相似文献

A parsimony analysis of parts of the mitochondrial genes 12S and 16S (722 base pairs) from 43 species of the advanced snakes (Caenophidia) resulted in two most parsimonious topologies. Based on a strict consensus of these the following objectives were addressed: (1) Which groupings of caenophidian taxa can be recognized? (2) Is Acrochordus sister group to, or included in, Caenophidia? (3) Are boigine snakes (sensu stricto) a monophyletic grouping and where do these taxa belong in a broader caenophidian context? (4) What are the systematic affinities of the African egg-eating genusDasypeltis ? The phylogeny was then used to discuss: (5) the evolution of the posterior maxillary dentition and the composition of the retinal visual cells. The results reveal that, when using Boa constrictor as outgroup,Acrochordus is the sistergroup to the remainder of the ingroup, and a further eight clades are defined. Five genera of elapids did not appear to be monophyletic and a number of colubrids (sensu lato) such as Mehelya,Lycodonomorphus , Lamprophis, Atractaspis, and Buhoma (formerly Geodipsas), which have traditionally been problematic to place systematically, did not group with any of the larger clades. These taxa are together with the elapids representatives of very early radiations in the evolution of the Advanced snakes. The homalopsine Enhydris enhydris appears as a sistergroup to the viperine clade (Clade 1). When plotted onto the topology the posterior maxillary dentition appear to express three, maybe four, independent origins of the Opistoglyph State. The retinal evolution also appeared very complex. The suggested very primitive placing of the Boigine snakes (sensu stricto) due to their lack of double cones in the retina of the eye was not supported here; instead the sequence data suggests this observation to be the result of a secondary loss.  相似文献

Three new species ofAspergillus isolated from clinical sources in China are described and illustrated:A. beijingensis, A. qizutongii andA. wangduanlii. The first species is characterized by spreading colonies, yellow to grayish green conidial heads, smooth-walled conidiophores with a clavate vesicle, uniseriate aspergilla and nearly globose, micro-verrucose conidia. The second is characterized by spreading colonies, olive-yellow conidial heads, conspicuously roughened conidiophores with a flask-shaped vesicle, uniseriate but often secondarily proliferating aspergilla and globose, smooth conidia. The third is characterized by rapidly growing colonies, dull green conidial heads, smooth to irregularly roughened conidiophores which are often surrounded by coiled hyphae in the basal part and are terminally swollen into a globose or irregular shaped vesicle, uniseriate aspergilla and globose, micro-verrucose conidia.  相似文献

Cusp six (C6) of the mandibular molars is well-represented in the Hominoid fossil record and occurs with irregular frequency in the various geographic populations of modernHomo as well as in many of the extant non-human primates. The literature reveals considerable controversy and confusion related to C6 anatomic location, definitions and scoring criteria, and a major problem exists in deciding what actually is the “real” or “true” C6, especially relative to variable hypoconulid (C5) expression (i.e., reduction forms and the “divided hypoconulid”). A method is proposed that involves dual 4-point ranking (absent, small, medium, large) and reporting of C5–C6 covariation within a framework of 13 morphological expressivity categories. When applied to 3 different human populations, the method provided a reasonably clear picture of the actual C5 and C6 covariation patterns observed in the mandibular molar dentition. Data obtained from this exercise illustrated that inter- and intrapopulation differences in reported C6 frequencies could be associated with variable scoring criteria as well as with different levels of occlusal attrition and age distribution of the samples.  相似文献

The maxillary first molar crowns of 48 male and 38 female Canadian Inuit (Eskimos) were analyzed three-dimensionally by using moiré contourography methods. Cusp heights were significantly higher in males while the mesial and distal marginal ridges were more proximally placed in males. The metacone and the oblique ridge appeared to be better developed in the males. Comparison of the present results with published results for Dutch and Japanese indicated that the Japanese and Inuit had lower cusps that were more widely spaced than the Dutch. Correlation coefficients suggest that height measurements were positively correlated as were linear measurements. However, there were few significant correlations between height and linear determinations, suggesting that the development of the "width" of a crown is nearly independent of the development of the height of the cusps and crown.  相似文献

Data on tooth use in eating fruits and seeds were collected on 12 West African monkeys representing five species of cercopithecines, Cercopithecus aethiops, Cercopithecus campbelli, Cercocebus atys, Erythrocebus patas, and Papio papio. Field observations and information in the published literature were used to select fruits for captive feeding trials. A total of over 27,000 tests were conducted to determine the preferences of the monkeys for 78 fruits. Data were collected on the selection of fruit parts, as well as tooth use, in eating 88 fruit species. All five monkey species had remarkably similar fruit part preferences. Seeds were eaten in 86% of the tested fruits and represent the fruit part most frequently eaten by all the tested monkeys. With few exceptions, molars were used to puncture and crush the seeds. It is suggested that the development of bilophodont molars might be an adaptation by Old World monkeys to seed predation. Given their large size relative to other arboreal frugivores, seed predation could provide a dietary niche for Old World monkeys.  相似文献

The infraorbital foramen (IOF) transmits the infraorbital nerve (ION) to specialized sensory cells (mechanoreceptors) in the maxillary region. The size of the IOF has been used in numerous paleoecological interpretations of the fossil record. However, these interpretations have been applied without an explicit analysis of the relationship between ecological variables and the IOF. ION and IOF cross‐sectional area show a strong positive correlation. As a result, IOF area can be a proxy for ION area, and it is hypothesized that IOF area may be a good measure for maxillary somatosensory acuity. Differences in diet, substrate preference, and/or activity pattern have been shown to correlate with differences in maxillary somatosensory acuity among mammals. This study examines how IOF area covaries with different ecological variables. IOF area was measured for 89 primate species. Ecological profiles were also created for each species and used to evaluate interspecific variation in relative IOF area within each ecological category. The results show a significant relationship between relative IOF area and diet, but not substrate preference or activity pattern. Frugivores have significantly larger relative IOFs than either folivores or insectivores, but the relative IOFs of folivores and insectivores do not differ significantly from one another. These results partially support the hypothesis that maxillary mechanoreception is a critical sensory cue for primates within a feeding context. Results for this study suggest the IOF can be used as an informative character in some paleoecological interpretations of the primate fossil record. The maxillary organ of Scutigera coleoptrata was investigated using light microscopy, electron microscopy, and maceration techniques. Additionally, we compared the maxillary organ of S. coleoptrata with those of two other notostigmophoran centipedes, Parascutigera festiva and Allothereua maculata, using SEM. The maxillary organ is located inside the posterior coxal lobes of the first maxillae and extends posteriorly as sac-like pouches. The narrow epidermis of the maxillae is differentiated to form the epithelium of the maxillary organ. Two types of epithelia are distinguishable: a simple cuboidal epithelium of different height and differentiation (types I, II, IV) and a pseudostratified columnar epithelium (type III). These epithelia are covered by a highly specialized cuticle. The pseudostratified epithelium is the most prominent feature of the maxillary organ. It is covered with hundreds of setae, protruding deep into the maxillary organ. Two different types of setae can be distinguished, filiform and fusiform. The maxillary organ communicates with the oral cavity, the maxillary organ gland, the maxillary nephridium, and with a large number of epidermal glands that secrete into the maxillary organ. Epithelium III allows the extension of the maxillary organ when its pouches are filled with secretion. The maxillary organ is a complex multifunctional organ. The organ probably stores excretion from the maxillary nephridia and secretory fluid from the maxillary organ gland and other epidermal glands. The fluid is primarily required as preening fluid. The ammonia of the excretory fluid is thought to evaporate via the setae and the wide opening of the maxillary organ. It is likely that parts of the fluid can be reabsorbed by the animal via the oral cavity.  相似文献

According to a hypothesis in the broader mammalian literature, secondary sexual characteristics that have evolved to signal fitness and size to other conspecifics should exhibit positive allometry across adult males within a species. Here this hypothesis is tested in the genus Mandrillus. The overbuilding of bony features in larger individuals necessitates a functional explanation as bone is metabolically expensive to produce and maintain. Canine size and size of the maxillary ridge are scaled against a body size surrogate in intraspecific samples of male Mandrillus sphinx (mandrills) and Mandrillus leucophaeus (drills). Areal dimensions are weighted more heavily as they represent the size of a feature as it is viewed by individuals. Measures of the maxillary ridge and canine tooth are significantly correlated with the size surrogate and scale with positive allometry in both samples supporting the hypothesis that these features function to advertise a male's body size and fitness to other males competing for mates and potential discerning females. This is the first study in primates to test for intraspecific positive allometric scaling of bony facial features in adult males based on a theory of fitness signaling and sexual selection.  相似文献
