After being placed equidistant from playbacks of two computer-generated male calls, females of the katydidAmblycorypha parvipennis preferentially moved toward call phrases that were louder, longer, and leading (initiated without being overlapped by other call phrase endings). Because earlier tests with calling males had indicated that male mating success was related to these call parameters, we suggest that mating success is partly a result of female choice. Females also preferentially responded to the initial, rather than the latter, half of male phrases. Results of other tests suggested that females were responding to increased phonatome rate characteristic of the first half of the phrase. Males may compete to lead in order to prevent jamming of initial phrase information. Females also preferentially phonoresponded (ticked) in response to longer phrases. In earlier studies of male mating success and female phonotaxis using live males, male weight, sound level, and leading were intercorrelated; however, none of these parameters were correlated with phrase length. We suggest that females may respond to different call parameters under different environmental conditions.  相似文献

Biocatalytic reactions can be carried out in aqueous-organic two-phase systems. Several models to describe the thermodynamically-determined equilibrium position in such systems have appeared in the literature. Some of these models are only valid for dilute systems, whereas others can also be used for nondilute systems. In this paper, these models are described and compared. We examined the function of the vertical bar pattern on maleswordtails (Xiphophorus multilinneatus) as a signal in bothmale-male competition and female choice. This pattern had previouslybeen described as an aggressive signal because males intensifiedthe bars during male-male encounters in the laboratory. Ourfield observations supported this observation and also showedthat bars intensified when males courted females. The intensityof bars was correlated with access to females in the field.Within the size range of males that have bars, however, neitherbar number nor male size appeared to influence access to females.We used freeze-branding to remove the bars from males in thelaboratory so that we could control for characters correlatedwith bar intensity, and tested males and females separatelyso that we could separate the influence of these two componentsof sexual selection. We compared the responses of males andfemales to males that had their bars removed and control malesfreeze-branded between the bars. Test males responded more aggressivelyto males without bars as compared to control males. In addition,females showed a preference for control males over males thathad their bars removed. These results suggest that the barsmay function as a signal that deters rival males and attractsfemales.  相似文献

Reproducing Varroa jacobsoni obtained from brood cells of Apis mellifera L. with 13–16 day old bees (pupae) and Varroa mites kept on adult bees for at least 8 days were simultaneously tested for their choice in three host types. Comparisons were made of attractiveness of Varroa jacobsoni to nurse bees, pollen foragers as to larvae from nearly capped brood cells. Host choices were observed in Petri dishes and in an Y-shaped olfactometer. Varroa jacobsoni obtained from capped brood cells showed a stronger preference for nurse bees in Petri dish simultaneous choice tests with pollen foragers or larvae than did mites which were previously kept on adult bees. In olfactometer simultaneous choice tests, the two mite test groups showed no clear difference in preferences for bees of different ages. The preference of Varroa jacobsoni for bees of different ages is therefore not only influenced by host factors but also by intrinsic factors in female mites that depend on the mite's reproductive stage.  相似文献

We determined the genetic basis of several traits related to overall fitness of Aquilegia caerulea, a perennial herb of the Rocky Mountains in western North America. To obtain measures of heritability relevant to the evolutionary potential of wild populations, we performed full and partial diallel crosses and studied progeny performance in the field. Based on a joint analysis of two designs with a total of 18 parents and 102 crosses, we detected significant maternal variance for seed mass and emergence time, but this component was negligible for later-expressed traits. Low heritability and evidence that maternal effects on seed mass are largely environmental suggest that in this population there is little evolutionary potential for change in seed mass under conditions experienced during the study. Seed mass varied depending on particular combinations of parents and cross direction. Such an interaction can have several different biological interpretations, including that particular maternal parents selectively provision embryos sired by particular pollen genotypes. Width of the first true leaf after 4 wk of growth and leaf size of juvenile plants at years one and two were significantly heritable and positively genetically correlated. Juvenile survival exhibited significant dominance variance, as expected from evidence of inbreeding depression in this trait. In contrast, for other traits that exhibit inbreeding depression in this population (seed mass and third-year leaf size), dominance variance was negligible.  相似文献

The breeding system of the extremely diverse species Persoonia mollis (Proteaceae) was characterized to, firstly, assess its importance as a mechanism promoting diversity and, secondly, to investigate the mode of control over selective fruit abortion. Fruit quantity and quality was assessed following self-and outcross-pollination manipulations. Twenty percent of outcrossed flowers set fruit, compared to only 1% of flowers fertilized with self-pollen. Fruits produced by self-fertilization were 72% of the weight of cross-fertilized fruits. Fruits produced by self-fertilization were significantly fewer in number and lighter than fruits following natural pollination of unmanipulated flowers (17% fruit set), but outcrossed and naturally pollinated fruits were equivalent. Flower to fruit demography suggested that a post-zygotic mechanism may be preferentially selecting the most vigorous zygote genotypes, as ovary abscission occurs mostly between 4 and 30 weeks after pollination, regardless of pollen source. Self-pollen tube growth was found to be inhibited within the styly, while pollen tubes were found in the ovary for 50% of all outcrossed flowers. These data suggest that a pre-zygotic pseudo self-incompatibility mechanism is the cause of low fruit set following self-pollination. Abstract.
  • 1 Gastrophysa viridula Degeer (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) and the pathogenic rust fungus Uromyces rumicis (Schum.) Wint. both occur on leaves of Rumex crispus L. and R.obtusifolius L. Individual stages of beetle development, and egg laying, were compared on healthy and infected leaves of each plant species in the laboratory. Oviposition choice was investigated in the field and laboratory.
  • 2 Beetles reared on infected leaves of each species had greater larval mortality and slower development than those reared on healthy leaves. Although larvae feeding on infected leaves consumed up to 2.5 times more dry weight than those reared on healthy leaves, they had a lower relative growth rate and pupated at a lower weight. These changes were consistent with the reduced nutritive quality of rust-infected Rumex leaves.
  • 3 Fecundity of beetles reared on infected leaves of both species was considerably reduced. Eggs laid by beetles feeding on infected R.crispus leaves also had a reduced viability.
  • 4 The beetle developed consistently poorer on healthy R.crispus than on healthy R.obtusifolius throughout its life-cycle. Differences in larval performance were greater between host species than between infected and healthy leaves.
  • 5 Oviposition was similar on infected and healthy R.crispus in both the laboratory and field. However, adults consumed less, and laid fewer eggs on infected than on healthy R.obtusifolius. The pattern of egg laying on different aged leaves was affected by rust infection: a greater proportion of eggs was laid on the older, infected leaves, than on the equivalent aged leaves on the healthy plants. Few larvae survived from eggs laid on rusted leaves in the field.

This paper examines the relationship between the early rearing experience of zoo-born, zoo-reared chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) and the subsequent occurrence of successful copulation as adults. Developmental histories were acquired for 71 subjects via questionnaires and phone interviews. The following variables related to aspects of chimpanzees' early rearing experience were examined: (1) Rearing conditions, that is, hand reared alone, reared with siblings or peers, or reared by at least one adult conspecific. (2) Age removed from mother. (3) Sex of subject, and/or (4) participation in shows. Each of these variables was then compared to the subjects' sexual competence, defined here as having been observed to exhibit functional copulatory behavior as adults. Seventy-five percent of the subjects were observed to exhibit functional copulatory behavior on at least one occasion. No single component of rearing was successful in producing sexually competent adults 100% of the time; no rearing condition, as defined in this study, resulted in reproductive failure for all subjects experiencing those conditions. Chimpanzees that were hand reared alone, that is, in the total absence of conspecifics, were least likely to copulate as adults; about half of those chimpanzees that were reared with siblings or peers (and in the absence of adult conspecifics) copulated as adults. Almost 90% of those chimpanzees that were reared with at least one adult conspecific copulated as adults. Chimpanzees removed from their mothers at an early age (less than one year of age) were less likely to reproduce as adults. Male and female chimpanzees were equally likely to reproduce as adults. If more females than males are available for mating in the breedingpopulation (i.e., the operational sex ratio, OSR, is femalebiased), males can afford to be choosy. In the pipefish (Syngnathustyphle) females compete for males, who are choosy. In natureOSRs are typically female biased, but may occasionally be malebiased. In a series of experiments, males were allowed to choosebetween a large and a small female under a perceived excessof either males or females. Under female bias, males preferredthe large female: they spent more time close to her than tothe small female; they courted the large female sooner thanthe small; and they tended to copulate sooner and more oftenwith the large female. Under male bias all these differencesvanished and males mated at random with respect to female size.Males reproduced at a faster rate under male than under femalebias because they received more eggs in their brood pouches.Thus, males switched from maximizing mate quality (i.e., beingchoosy) to minimizing the risk of not reproducing (i.e., beingquick) as the OSR became male biased.  相似文献

Mating activity was observed during four breeding seasons in two groups of black and white ruffed lemurs (Varecia variegata variegata) living in lowland rain forest on Nosy Mangabe island, Madagascar. The onset of the May-July breeding season was signalled by behavioral changes in adult males. Males made forays outside their usual home ranges, were more aggressive to other males, and performed appetitive and other sex-specific behaviors more frequently. Females showed receptive and proceptive behaviors during a 1-2 day behavioral estrus. Ruffed lemurs mated monogamously, polyandrously, and polygynously. These observations do not support previous assertions that they live only in monogamous families.
