The rate of suspended material transported with the current and its deposition in the Vistula River and its main tributaries was estimated to determine the effects of river regulation in the following periods: (1) between the beginning of engineering works on the Vistula River and the construction of the first dams on its tributaries, (2) in the years 1946-1995 when transport measurements were taken, (3) after the planned completion of the dam system. Those estimates were based on the results of long-term measurements of the rivers, carried out by the State Hydrological Survey at numerous gauging stations, as well as on analysis of maps published after 1780. The combined methods allowed estimating both the differences in deposition of the suspended material along the river and the long-term variability of that process. The initial increase in transport and deposition of the suspended material in the Vistula River during the four decades succeeding the river regulation (1890s–1930s) was followed by a rapid decrease of the material transport caused by the construction of dams and changes in land-use in the river basin. 相似文献

Neanthes succinea (Frey & Leuckart, 1847) is a common nereidid polychaete of both epifaunal and infaunal estuarine habitats. The gut contents of individuals collected from two epifaunal and two infaunal habitats are compared. Our a priori expectation was that individuals from epifaunal habitats would be classified as macrophagous with guts indicating carnivory and/or macroalgal herbivory, while individuals from infaunal habitats would be classified as microphagous with guts indicating deposit feeding. At all four locations gut contents indicated deposit feeding with little indication of macrophagous feeding. Average particle sizes for mineral grains did not differ between the four collection sites. For the two infaunal locations mean size of the mineral grains in gut contents was significantly smaller than ambient sediments. In addition to mineral grains, guts contained diatoms, dinoflagellates, macrophytic detritus, protozoan tests, and a variety of metazoans. Our study demonstrates that caution is necessary when inferring feeding type from morphology and that population and habitat specific differences in diet can occur within the same species. 相似文献

Twenty eight-day old plants of two spring wheat cultivars differing in salinity tolerance were subjected to varying levels
of nitrogen (56, 112, and 224 mg N·kg−1 soil) for 42 days. Both cultivars performed differently under varying soil N levels in terms of growth, and grain yield and
yield components. Nitrogen levels, 112 and 224 mg·kg−1 soil, caused maximal growth in Sarsabz and Barani-83, respectively. Cv Sarsabz maintained higher leaf water and turgor potentials,
but lower leaf osmotic potential than those of Barani-83 at all external N regimes. Sarsabz had higher Chl a, Chl b and carotenoids contents in leaves than those in Barani-83 at 56 and 112 mg N·kg−1 soil. Sarsabz had higher contents of leaf soluble proteins, soluble sugars, and free amino acids than those in Barani-83
at all external N levels. In Barani-83 net CO2 assimilation rate remained almost unchanged, whereas in Sarsabz it decreased consistently with increase in external N level.
The better growth performance of Sarsabaz as compared to Barani-83 under varying soil N levels except 224 mg N·kg−1 soil was associated with maintenance of high leaf turgor potential but not with net CO2 assimilation rate. 相似文献

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency use a four tiered evaluation process to assess the potential for significant impacts from open water disposal of dredged material to the aquatic environment. This tiered approach requires only the appropriate level of analysis to estimate potential chemical and biological effects. Uncertainty is inherent in each tier and can lead to delayed, costly, and potentially inappropriate decisions. This paper discusses sources of uncertainty in the tiered approach with the goal of improving dredged material management decisions. These potential uncertainty sources are common to many dredging projects but might not be applicable to all projects. Although not all uncertainty sources can be quantified, even using the simple scoring procedure described here, they can still contribute significantly to uncertainty in predictions of adverse effects. Of the sources that could be scored and ranked, those identified as most uncertain include trophic transfer, chronic bioassay interpretation, fate and transport model parameter uncertainty, toxicity endpoints based on body burdens, human dose-response models, toxicity of complex mixtures, and estimation of population-level effects. Stomach contents of 75 specimens of the cornetfish Fistularia commersonii, collected in shallow water off Kuchinoerabu-jima Island, southern Japan were analyzed. Many fish contained multiple prey.
The prey were mostly fish, grouped into two types, pelagic and reef fishes. The size of prey increased as the size of F. commersonii increased. All the small individuals (<50 cm SL) had fed on only small reef fish. However, most of the large individuals
(>50 cm SL) had fed on either prey type. Both pelagic and reef fishes usually occurred simultaneously in shallow water, suggesting
that most of the large cornetfish may selectively hunt either type of prey.
