Pollination ecology of an emergent tree species, Shorea (section Mutica) parvifolia (Dipterocarpaceae), was studied using the canopy observation system in a lowland dipterocarp forest in Sarawak, Malaysia, during a general flowering period in 1996. Although the species has been reported to be pollinated by thrips in Peninsular Malaysia, our observations of flower visitors and pollination experiments indicated that beetles (Chrysomelidae and Curculionidae, Coleoptera) contributed to pollination of S. parvifolia in Sarawak. Beetles accounted for 74% of the flower visitors collected by net-sweeping, and 30% of the beetles carried pollen, while thrips accounted for 16% of the visitors, and 12% of the thrips carried pollen. The apical parts of the petals and pollen served as a reward for the beetles. Thrips stayed inside the flower almost continuously after arrival, and movements among flowers were rare. Fruit set was significantly increased by introduction of beetles to bagged flowers, but not by introduction of thrips. Hand-pollination experiments and comparison of fruit set in untreated, bagged, and open flowers suggested that S. parvifolia was mainly outbreeding.  相似文献

Hormonal imprinting takes place perinatally at the first encounter between the developing receptor and its target hormone, resulting in the accomplishment of normal receptor development. In the presence of an excess of target hormone or the absence of it, or an excess of related molecules which can be bound by the receptor, faulty imprinting develops with life-long consequences. In previous experiments neonatal endorphin exposure caused a decrease in endorphin and serotonin content of peritoneal mast cells of adult animals. In the present experiment 25-day-old (weaned) female rats received 2 microg endorphin, and the endorphin as well as serotonin content of adult mast cells and white blood cells was studied by flow cytometry and confocal microscopy. Peritoneal lymphocytes and blood monocytes contained significantly (p<0.01) less endorphin and peritoneal mast cells less serotonin (p<0.07, i.e. of questionable significance) than the untreated control. The results bring attention to the possibility of durable imprinting of differentiating cells later in life and to the durable (possibly life-long) effect of an endorphin excess (perhaps caused by injury) manifested in the change of endorphin and serotonin content of immune cells.  相似文献

Does seed production of spring ephemerals decrease when spring comes early?   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
To predict the effect of global warming on plant reproductive success, seed-sets of spring ephemerals were compared between a year of extremely warm spring (2002) and normal years at cool-temperate deciduous forests in northern Japan. The spring of 2002 was the warmest in the last 40years and most spring-ephemeral plants bloomed 7–17days earlier than usual. The seed-set of bumblebee-pollinated Corydalis ambigua drastically decreased in 2002 in every population. The small bee-pollinated Gagea lutea also significantly decreased in 2002. However, the seed-sets of two fly pollinated species, Adonis ramosa and Anemone flaccida, were not influenced by early flowering. These results indicat that the effect of global warming on seed production of spring ephemerals differs between species depending on the type of pollinators, and that bee-pollinated species can have serious impacts on reproductive success as a result of climate change.  相似文献

Current research on somatic embryogenesis of bamboo uses reproductive tissue as explants. However, it was hard to obtain the explant. Shoots of a local accession (3–4 m high) were used for multiple shoot production. In order to obtain embryogenic callus, nodal and internodal tissues from in vitro plantlets were placed on Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium supplemented with 9.2 M kinetin (KN), 13.6 M 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D), 0.1% (v/v) coconut milk, and 6% (w/v) sucrose. We studied the effects of sucrose and thidiazuron (TDZ) on callus proliferation. Optimal additives to the MS medium for embryogenic callus proliferation were 0.046 M TDZ, 13.6 M 2,4-D and 3% (w/v) sucrose. TDZ also promoted the germination of bamboo somatic embryos. The germination rate of the somatic embryos exceeded 80% on MS-based medium supplemented with 0.455M TDZ. Naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA) reduced germination. Well-developed plantlets were successfully transferred to soil. There was no albino mutant in subsequent culture. In vitro regenerants and potted plants flowered, but no seeds were produced.  相似文献

Unlike herbaceous, annual crops, trees are not highly domesticated and, therefore, have wild relatives with which they are interfertile. They are also long-lived perennials that produce copious amounts of pollen and seed, which are often disseminated over considerable distances by the wind. Federal regulators have made it clear that before transgenic trees can be grown commercially in the U.S., it will be necessary to develop a strategy to mitigate the risk of transgene spread into the environment. One way to satisfy this requirement is to genetically engineer reproductive sterility. Because of its many useful attributes, poplar has becomethe model tree species for research community. However, because of its relatively long juvenile period, the development of a reliable sterility system for poplar is taking longer than expected. By having an early-flowering genotype of poplar, it will be possible to make much faster progress in our efforts to develop a reliable transgene-confinement system. We have identified a genotype ofPopulus alba that can be induced to flower within nine months of being regenerated.  相似文献

We used a novel, nonintrusive experimental system to examine plant responses to warming and drought across a climatic and geographical latitudinal gradient of shrubland ecosystems in four sites from northern to southern Europe (UK, Denmark, The Netherlands, and Spain). In the first two years of experimentation reported here, we measured plant cover and biomass by the pinpoint method, plant 14C uptake, stem and shoot growth, flowering, leaf chemical concentration, litterfall, and herbivory damage in the dominant plant species of each site. The two years of approximately 1°C experimental warming induced a 15% increase in total aboveground plant biomass growth in the UK site. Both direct and indirect effects of warming, such as longer growth season and increased nutrient availability, are likely to be particularly important in this and the other northern sites which tend to be temperature-limited. In the water-stressed southern site, there was no increase in total aboveground plant biomass growth as expected since warming increases water loss, and temperatures in those ecosystems are already close to the optimum for photosynthesis. The southern site presented instead the most negative response to the drought treatment consisting of a soil moisture reduction at the peak of the growing season ranging from 33% in the Spanish site to 82% in The Netherlands site. In the Spanish site there was a 14% decrease in total aboveground plant biomass growth relative to control. Flowering was decreased by drought (up to 24% in the UK and 40% in Spain). Warming and drought decreased litterfall in The Netherlands site (33% and 37%, respectively) but did not affect it in the Spanish site. The tissue P concentrations generally decreased and the N/P ratio increased with warming and drought except in the UK site, indicating a progressive importance of P limitation as a consequence of warming and drought. The magnitude of the response to warming and drought was thus very sensitive to differences among sites (cold-wet northern sites were more sensitive to warming and the warm-dry southern site was more sensitive to drought), seasons (plant processes were more sensitive to warming during the winter than during the summer), and species. As a result of these multiple plant responses, ecosystem and community level consequences may be expected.  相似文献

A model has been developed that can be used to determine the phases of sensitivity to photoperiod for seedlings subjected to reciprocal transfers at regular intervals between long (LD) and short day (SD) conditions. The novel feature of this approach is that it enables the simultaneous analysis of the time to flower and number of leaves below the inflorescence. A range of antirrhinum cultivars were grown, all of which were shown to be quantitative long-day plants. Seedlings were effectively insensitive to photoperiod when very young (juvenile). However, after the end of the juvenile phase, SD delayed flowering and increased the number of leaves below the inflorescence. Plants transferred from LD to SD showed a sudden hastening of flowering and a decrease in leaf number once sufficient LD had been received for flower commitment. Photoperiod had little effect on the rate of flower development. The analysis clearly identified major cultivar differences in the length of the juvenile phase and the photoperiod-sensitive inductive phase in both LD and SD.  相似文献

We examined patterns of genetic variance and covariance in two traits (i) carbon stable isotope ratio delta13C (dehydration avoidance) and (ii) time to flowering (drought escape), both of which are putative adaptations to local water availability. Greenhouse screening of 39 genotypes of Arabidopsis thaliana native to habitats spanning a wide range of climatic conditions, revealed a highly significant positive genetic correlation between delta13C and flowering time. Studies in a range of C3 annuals have also reported large positive correlations, suggesting the presence of a genetically based trade-off between mechanisms of dehydration avoidance (delta13C) and drought escape (early flowering). We examined the contribution of pleiotropy by using a combination of mutant and near-isogenic lines to test for positive mutational covariance between delta13C and flowering time. Ecophysiological mutants generally showed variation in delta13C but not flowering time. However, flowering time mutants generally demonstrated pleiotropic effects consistent with natural variation. Mutations that caused later flowering also typically resulted in less negative delta13C and thus probably higher water use efficiency. We found strong evidence for pleiotropy using near-isogenic lines of Frigida and Flowering locus C, cloned loci known to be responsible for natural variation in flowering time. These data suggest the correlated evolution of delta13C and flowering time is explained in part by the fixation of pleiotropic alleles that alter both delta13C and time to flowering.  相似文献

Age and size at reproduction are important components of fitness, and are variable both within and among angiosperm species. The fitness consequences of such life-history variation are most readily studied in organisms that reproduce only once in their lifetime. The timing of the onset of reproduction (bolting) in the monocarpic perennial, Lobelia inflata, occurs over a range of dates within a season, and may be postponed to a later year. Empirical relationships among life-history traits, derived from over 950 wild-growing and experimentally manipulated plants in the field, are used to model an optimal changing size threshold (norm of reaction) for bolting over the growing season. Comparisons are made between observed and expected norms of reaction governing bolting. An apparently suboptimal bolting schedule that precludes bolting beyond an early (conservative) date is observed, and is found to be qualitatively consistent with conservative bet hedging under unpredictable season lengths. On this basis we propose the schedule of bolting as a plausible example of a conservative bet-hedging strategy. The results underscore the critical need for long-term studies of fluctuating selection to distinguish suboptimality from bet hedging.  相似文献
