We investigated the effect of elevated [CO2] (700 μmol mol?1), elevated temperature (+2 °C above ambient) and decreased soil water availability on net photosynthesis (Anet) and water relations of one‐year old potted loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) seedlings grown in treatment chambers with high fertility at three sites along a north‐south transect covering a large portion of the species native range. At each location (Blairsville, Athens and Tifton, GA) we constructed four treatment chambers and randomly assigned each chamber one of four treatments: ambient [CO2] and ambient temperature, elevated [CO2] and ambient temperature, ambient [CO2] and elevated temperature, or elevated [CO2] and elevated temperature. Within each chamber half of the seedlings were well watered and half received much less water (1/4 that of the well watered). Measurements of net photosynthesis (Anet), stomatal conductance (gs), leaf water potential and leaf fluorescence were made in June and September, 2008. We observed a significant increase in Anet in response to elevated [CO2] regardless of site or temperature treatment in June and September. An increase in air temperature of over 2 °C had no significant effect on Anet at any of the sites in June or September despite over a 6 °C difference in mean annual temperature between the sites. Decreased water availability significantly reduced Anet in all treatments at each site in June. The effects of elevated [CO2] and temperature on gs followed a similar trend. The temperature, [CO2] and water treatments did not significantly affect leaf water potential or chlorophyll fluorescence. Our findings suggest that predicted increases in [CO2] will significantly increase Anet, while predicted increases in air temperature will have little effect on Anet across the native range of loblolly pine. Potential decreases in precipitation will likely cause a significant reduction in Anet, though this may be mitigated by increased [CO2]. 相似文献

Environmental change has a wide range of ecological consequences, including species extinction and range expansion. Many studies have shown that insect species respond rapidly to climatic change. A mountain pine beetle epidemic of record size in North America has led to unprecedented mortality of lodgepole pine, and a significant range expansion to the northeast of its historic range. Our goal was to determine the spatial genetic variation found among outbreak population from which genetic structure, and dispersal patterns may be inferred. Beetles from 49 sampling locations throughout the outbreak area in western Canada were analysed at 13 microsatellite loci. We found significant north-south population structure as evidenced by: (i) Bayesian-based analyses, (ii) north-south genetic relationships and diversity gradients; and (iii) a lack of isolation-by-distance in the northernmost cluster. The north-south structure is proposed to have arisen from the processes of postglacial colonization as well as recent climate-driven changes in population dynamics. Our data support the hypothesis of multiple sources of origin for the outbreak and point to the need for population specific information to improve our understanding and management of outbreaks. The recent range expansion across the Rocky Mountains into the jack/lodgepole hybrid and pure jack pine zones of northern Alberta is consistent with a northern British Columbia origin. We detected no loss of genetic variability in these populations, indicating that the evolutionary potential of mountain pine beetle to adapt has not been reduced by founder events. This study illustrates a rapid range-wide response to the removal of climatic constraints, and the potential for range expansion of a regional population. 相似文献

Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L., Pinaceae) produces a terpenoid resin which consists of monoterpenes and resin acids that offer protection against herbivores and pathogen attacks. Methyl jasmonate (MJ) is a potential plant elicitor which induces a wide range of chemical and anatomical defence reactions in conifers and might be used to increase resistance against biotic damage. Different amounts of MJ (control, 10 mm , and 100 mm ) were applied to Scots pine to examine the vigour, physiology, herbivory performance, and induction of secondary compound production in needles, bark, and xylem of 2‐year‐old Scots pine seedlings. Growth decreased significantly in both MJ treated plants, and photosynthesis decreased in the 100 mm MJ treated plants, when compared to 10 mm MJ or control plants. The large pine weevil (Hylobius abietis L.) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) gnawed a significantly smaller area of stem bark in the 100 mm treated plants than in the control or 10 mm treated plants. The 100 mm MJ treatment increased the resin acid concentration in the needles and xylem but not in the bark. Furthermore, both MJ treatments increased the number of resin ducts in newly developing xylem. The changes in plant growth and chemical parameters after the MJ treatments indicate shifts in carbon allocation, but MJ also affects plant physiology and xylem development. Terpenoid resin production was tissue‐specific, but generally increased after MJ treatments, which means that this compound may offer potential protection of conifers against herbivores. 相似文献

We report a strategy for developing codominant PCR-based genetic markers by using sequenced cDNA clones from loblolly pine
(Pinus taeda L.). These clones were previously used as probes for detecting restriction fragment length polymorphisms (RFLPs) to generate
linkage maps. After assessing the complexity of banding patterns from Southern blots, we selected clones representing relatively
simple gene families, and then determined nucleotide sequences for about 200 bp at each end of the cDNA inserts. Specific
PCR primers were designed to amplify samples of genomic DNA derived from two loblolly pine mapping populations. Polymorphisms
were detected after digesting the amplified DNA fragments with a battery of restriction endonucleases, and most polymorphisms
were inherited in a Mendelian fashion. These newly identified genetic markers are codominant and relatively simple to use.
By assaying DNA from individuals used to construct RFLP maps, we show that most of these markers map to the same position
as the RFLP loci detected using their corresponding cDNAs as probes, implying that these markers have been converted from
RFLP to PCR-based methods. These PCR-based markers will be useful for genome mapping and population genetics.

The Chinese white pine beetle, Dendroctonus armandi Tsai & Li (Coleoptera: Curculionidae, Scolytinae), is considered the most destructive forest pest in the Qinling and Bashan Mountains of China. In recent years, winter temperature has dropped in these regions, and extremely low temperatures are hard to survive for insects. Cold hardiness becomes a crucial strategy because temperature change often leads to fluctuations in insect abundance, and the metabolism rate is a key index of resistance to cold in overwintering insects. Therefore, we investigated the relationship between the change in respiratory rate and the activity of metabolism-related mitochondrial enzymes in D. armandi larvae under cold conditions. We found that the respiratory rate decreased, and it was matched with the activity of glutamate dehydrogenase, aconitase, and lipase during overwintering. Among the various test times under cold conditions, the respiratory rate also decreased with decreasing temperature and increased under very low temperatures. At all cold stress periods, glutamate dehydrogenase and lipase showed increased activity at higher temperatures and decreased activity under lower temperatures, but the activity of NAD-malic enzyme, NADP-malic enzyme, mitochondrial isocitrate dehydrogenase, and aconitase were contrary. Under all low temperatures, the activity of enzymes – except for NADP-malic enzyme, glutamate dehydrogenase, and lipase – increased in short-term cold stress and decreased in long-term cold stress at 4, 0, −4, −6, −8, and −10 °C. However, at −2 °C, the activity of enzymes showed a decreasing trend in short-term treatments and an increasing trend in long-term treatments, except for mitochondrial isocitrate dehydrogenase. The results not only improve our understanding of the metabolic mechanism of cold adaptation in D. armandi, but also provide an important experimental basis for further study and biological pest control. 相似文献

天然林择伐改变了林分的树种组成和结构,导致林木竞争关系发生变化,进而影响树木的生长和种群的动态.关键树种在维持群落结构和生态系统功能方面具有至关重要的作用.为了弄清长白山区阔叶红松林典型林型关键树种竞争关系的特点,本研究以红松、紫椴和水曲柳为研究对象,运用Hegyi竞争指数分析了受不同程度采伐干扰后形成的原始林(未受干扰)、轻度择伐林、中度择伐林和重度择伐林的林分结构和竞争关系.结果表明: 与原始林相比,轻度择伐林中关键树种的种群结构没有显著变化;中度择伐林和重度择伐林中3个关键树种大树(胸径DBH≥20 cm)的密度和平均胸径均显著减少,但幼树(2 cm≤DBH<10 cm)的数量增加.所有样地中关键树种的竞争指数均随径级的增加而减小,且二者服从幂函数分布,而林木胸径生长到20 cm后,竞争指数进入稳定状态.在原始林、轻度和中度择伐林中,3个树种的幼树的竞争指数受到非冠层树种的影响最大,而红松小树(10 cm≤DBH<20 cm)和大树主要受红松种内和非冠层树种的影响;水曲柳主要受红松和非冠层树种的影响,紫椴主要受种内和红松的影响.重度择伐林中,白桦是3个树种的主要竞争来源,贡献率均超过50%.根据以上关键树种竞争关系的特点,抚育非冠层树种有利于3个关键种幼树的更新和生长;对于小树来说,还需要根据树种类型来采取相应措施,而大树不需要采用抚育措施.本研究对关键树种培育和天然林择伐后快速恢复具有指导意义. 相似文献

This paper discusses the moisture content of sound and decayed Corsican pine (Pinus nigra) after modification with isocyanates {n-butyl isocyanate (BuNCO) and 1,6-diisocyanatehexane (HDI)} at specified intervals of weight percent gain (WPG). The main effects of decay fungi (brown and white rot) and levels of modification (WPG) on moisture contents of modified samples are also examined. Corsican pine reacted with isocyanates enhanced the hydrophobic (restrained water) nature of wood. The equilibrium moisture content of chemically modified wood decreases progressively with increasing WPG. Basidiomycete decay tests demonstrated protection by chemical modification. Wood moisture contents after soil block testing are significantly influenced by decay fungi and by the extent of reaction (WPG). Moisture uptake and susceptibility to decay of modified wood are higher when exposed to Coniophora puteana than other decay fungi. Corsican pine cross-linked by reaction with HDI is less susceptible to decay and is more hydrophobic than samples reacted with the single-site reactant BuNCO at comparable WPG. 相似文献

Human activities have resulted in increased nitrogen inputs into terrestrial ecosystems, but the impact of nitrogen on ecosystem function, such as nutrient cycling, will depend at least in part on the response of soil fungal communities. We examined the response of soil fungi to experimental nitrogen addition in a loblolly pine forest (North Carolina, USA) using a taxonomic marker (large subunit rDNA, LSU) and a functional marker involved in a critical step of cellulose degradation (cellobiohydrolase, cbhI) at five time points that spanned fourteen months. Sampling date had no impact on fungal community richness or composition for either gene. Based on the LSU, nitrogen addition led to increased fungal community richness, reduced relative abundance of fungi in the phylum Basidiomycota and altered community composition; however, similar shifts were not observed with cbhI. Fungal community dissimilarity of the LSU and cbhI genes was significantly correlated in the ambient plots, but not in nitrogen‐amended plots, suggesting either functional redundancy of fungi with the cbhI gene or shifts in other functional groups in response to nitrogen addition. To determine whether sequence similarity of cbhI could be predicted based on taxonomic relatedness of fungi, we conducted a phylogenetic analysis of publically available cbhI sequences from known isolates and found that for a subset of isolates, similar cbhI genes were found within distantly related fungal taxa. Together, these findings suggest that taxonomic shifts in the total fungal community do not necessarily result in changes in the functional diversity of fungi. 相似文献

Appearance of nitrate reductase (NR, EC 1.6.6.1–3), nitrite reductase (NiR, EC 1.7.7.1) and glutamine synthetase (GS, EC 6.3.1.2) under the control of nitrate, ammonium and light was studied in roots, hypocotyls and needles (cotyledonary whorl) of the Scots pine ( Pinus sylvestris L.) seedling. It was found that appearance of NiR was mainly controlled by nitrate whereas appearance of GS was strongly controlled by light. In principle, the NR activity level showed the same dependency on nitrate and light as that of NiR. In the root, both nitrate and ammonium had a stimulatory effect on GS activity whereas in the whorl the induction was minor. The level of NiR (NR) activity is high in the root and hypocotyl and low in the cotyledonary whorl, whereas the GS activity level per organ increases strongly from the root to the whorl. Thus, in any particular organ the operation of the glutamine synthetase/glutamate synthase (GS/GOGAT) cycle is not closely connected to the operation of the nitrate reduction pathway. The strong control of GS/GOGAT by light and the minor sensitivity to induction by nitrate or ammonium indicate a major role of the GS/GOGAT cycle in reassimilation of endogeniously generated ammonium. 相似文献

Detailed information from the Swedish National Forest Inventory was used to simulate the carbon balance for Sweden by the
process-based model Biome-BGC. A few shortcomings of the model were identified and solutions to those are proposed and also
used in the simulations. The model was calibrated against CO2 flux data from 3 forests in central Sweden and then applied to the whole country divided into 30 districts and 4 age classes.
Gross primary production (GPP) ranged over districts and age classes from 0.20 to 1.71 kg C m−2 y−1 and net ecosystem production (NEP) ranged from −0.01 to 0.44. The 10- to 30-year age class was the strongest carbon sink
because of its relatively low respiration rates. When the simulation results were scaled up to the whole country, GPP and
NEP were 175 and 29 Mton C y−1, respectively, for the 22.7 Mha of forests in Sweden. A climate change scenario was simulated by assuming a 4°C increase
in temperature and a doubling of the CO2 concentration; GPP and NEP then increased to 253 and 48 Mton C y−1, respectively. A sensitivity analysis showed that at present CO2 concentrations NEP would peak at an increase of 5°C for the mean annual temperature. At higher CO2 levels NEP showed a logarithmic increase. 相似文献
