Epizoanthus species are generally found in association with other marine invertebrates such as hermit crabs and gastropods. Although Epizoanthus spp. are relatively common, there is limited information about their diversity and ecology due to their habitats or hosts, often being below the depths of SCUBA diving (>~50 m). In particular, the Epizoanthus fauna of the Indo-Pacific Ocean remains poorly understood. In this study, the diversity of Epizoanthus species associated with eunicid worm tubes from shallow waters in the Pacific Ocean we investigated using molecular analyses (mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit 1 = COI, mitochondrial 16S ribosomal DNA = mt 16S-rDNA, nuclear internal transcribed spacer region of ribosomal DNA = ITS-rDNA) combined with morphological and ecological data. The combined data set leads us to describe two new species; Epizoanthus inazuma sp. n. and Epizoanthus beriber sp. n. Both new species are found in low-light environments: Epizoanthus inazuma sp. n. on mesophotic coral reef slopes and reef floors, or on the sides of overhangs; Epizoanthus beriber sp. n. has only been found in caves. Morphological characteristics of these two new species are very similar to Epizoanthus illoricatus Tischbierek, 1930 but the two new species are genetically distinct. Mesentery numbers and coloration of polyps may be useful diagnostic characteristics among eunicid-associated Epizoanthus species. These results demonstrate that there is high potential for other potentially undescribed zoantharian species, particularly in underwater cave habitats.  相似文献

This study describes the successful implementation of a modified cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) protocol to isolate genomic DNA and amplify 14 microsatellite markers from fertilized eggs and larvae of an emerging South African farmed marine fish species, the dusky kob Argyrosomus japonicus. To test and validate the efficiency of this method, genetic data were utilized to resolve parentage and kinship of first‐generation (F1) offspring produced in mass‐spawning events of wild broodstock fish in a commercial hatchery.  相似文献

Based on the law of soil water movement in unsaturated zones, the study discusses the effect of preferential flow on the movement of the researched soil through a soil column experiment using homemade experimental apparatus in four successive stages—young, middle-aged, mature and over-mature and combining dye-tracer analyses of the field process. The study proves that the preferential flow occurs in the area, and as indicated by the Reynolds numerical calculation of the preferential flow path in the 4 different successive stages, the preferential flow in the Gongga Mountain forest ecosystem is a transition flow between the laminar flow and the turbulent flow. By applying the kinetic wave model with dispersion wave (KDW preferential flow model) and comparing this model with the field experiment, the study finds that the preferential flow model has good practicability and high credibility. Verifying the KDW preferential flow model through statistic analysis indicates that the model can simulate the water movement in columns very well and the results are better in low rainfall than in high rainfall.  相似文献

The majority of migrant monarchs (Danaus plexippus) from the eastern USA and south‐eastern Canada migrate to Mexico; however, some of them migrate to Cuba. Cuban migrants hatch in south‐east Canada and eastern USA, and then engage in a southern trip of 4000 km to this Caribbean island. In Cuba, these migrants encounter resident monarchs, which do not migrate, and instead move between plant patches looking for nectar, mating partners and host plants. These differences in flight behaviour between migrant and resident Cuban monarchs may have resulted in different selective pressures in the wing size and shape. Two modes of selection were tested, directional and stabilizing. In addition, wing condition was compared between these two groups. Monarchs were collected for 4 years in Cuba and classified as resident or migrant using two independent techniques: Thin‐layer chromatography and stable hydrogen and stable carbon isotope measurements. Wing size was measured and wing condition was rated in the butterflies. Fourier analysis and wing angular measurements were used to assess wing shape differences. Migrants have significantly longer wings than residents, thus supporting the action of directional selection on wing size. In addition, directional selection acts on wing shape; that is, migrant females differ significantly from resident females in their wing angles. However, the results do not support the action of stabilizing selection: there was no significant variance between migrant and resident monarchs in their wing size or shape. Also, migrant females and males differed in wing condition as a result of differences in flight behaviour. In conclusion, eastern North American monarchs offer a good opportunity to study the selective pressures of migration on wing morphology and how different migratory routes and behaviours are linked to wing morphology and condition. © 2007 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2007, 92 , 605–616.  相似文献

Theropoda was one of the most successful dinosaurian clades during the Mesozoic and has remained a dominant component of faunas throughout the Cenozoic, with nearly 10,000 extant representatives. The discovery of Archaeopteryx provides evidence that avian theropods evolved at least 155 million years ago and that more than half of the tenure of avian theropods on Earth was during the Mesozoic. Considering the major changes in niche occupation for theropods resulting from the evolution of arboreal and flight capabilities, we have analyzed forelimb and hindlimb proportions among nonmaniraptoriform theropods, nonavian maniraptoriforms, and basal avialans using reduced major axis regressions, principal components analysis, canonical variates analysis, and discriminant function analysis. Our study is the first analysis on theropod limb proportions to apply phylogenetic independent contrasts and size corrections to the data to ensure that all the data are statistically independent and amenable to statistical analyses. The three ordination analyses we performed did not show any significant groupings or deviations between nonavian theropods and Mesozoic avian forms when including all limb elements. However, the bivariate regression analyses did show some significant trends between individual elements that suggested evolutionary trends of increased forelimb length relative to hindlimb length from nonmaniraptoriform theropods to nonavian maniraptoriforms to basal avialans. The increase in disparity and divergence away from the nonavian theropod body plan is well documented within Cenozoic forms. The lack of significant groupings among Mesozoic forms when examining the entire theropod body plan concurrently suggests that nonavian theropods and avian theropods did not substantially diverge in limb proportions until the Cenozoic. Cattleya coccinea and C. brevipedunculata (Orchidaceae) are closely related species distinguished primarily by geographical distribution, vegetative morphology and flowering period. Both species inhabit high‐elevation regions in south‐eastern Brazil, but are traditionally associated with different habitats, located in cloudy forests and campos rupestres (rocky fields), respectively. We used morphometrics and genetic variation of microsatellite markers to test the occurrence of a hybrid zone between these species located in Parque Estadual do Ibitipoca (PEI), Brazil. Morphological data reveal a continuum of variation between the putative taxa, influenced mainly by characters of leaf, pseudobulb and peduncle. However, genetic data do not support the occurrence of hybridization and introgression in PEI, showing that it is a pure population of C. brevipedunculata. Differences in vegetative characters among individuals from cloudy forests and campos rupestres suggest that morphological variation may be related to phenotypic plasticity in response to environmental light fluctuations, an unknown situation for this species. These results highlight the inconsistency of morphology for the identification of hybrids and the role of vegetative characters as a possible complicating factor for the taxonomy of these species, as they are subject to environmental influence.  相似文献

Habitat assessments are often based on the premise that spatial variation in population density arises from, and accurately reflects, underlying differences in quality among habitats. Nonetheless, this premise has been criticized on both theoretical and empirical grounds. Habitat quality perhaps is best evaluated by examining behavioural processes which directly influence habitat use. We present an approach based on the assumption that measures of local movement, such as habitat-specific immigration and loss rates, provide useful indicators of habitat quality. A dynamic turnover model was used in conjunction with mark-recapture techniques to estimate movement parameters for brook charr, Salvelinus fontinalis, and Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar, in different stream habitats during the summer. Immigration and loss rates were derived from mark-recapture experiments covering short periods of time (6 days). Movement-based rankings of habitat quality for both charr (pools glides > riffles) and salmon (riffles > glides > pools) were in agreement with results from earlier studies. Over evaluation periods of up to 65 days, observed abundances were highly variable in time and fluctuated about the equilibrium abundances calculated from movement parameters in the short-term experiments, suggesting that movement-based parameters may be more stable than measures of abundance for evaluating salmonid habitat. Because the approach based on movement behaviour focuses on immigration and loss, two processes that directly generate density differentials between habitats, it provides a more reliable mechanistic basis for understanding habitat selection than do traditional approaches based on density–quality relationships.  相似文献

腺苷甲硫氨酸脱羧酶(SAMDC)是参与植物多胺合成的一个关键酶。根据GenBank中已报道的SAMDC基因编码序列保守区域设计特异引物, 运用PCR技术分别从十字花科6属14个物种中新克隆分离了SAMDC基因的同源序列。比较分析结果表明: 这些同源序列的相似性达87%以上, 所推导的氨基酸序列相似性达90%以上, 且两者种间差异分别为0.2%~10.1%和0.3%~6.6%, 属间差异除“圆白”萝卜外分别是4.9%~13.6%和3.1%~10.3%; SAMDC基因的核苷酸及其可能编码的氨基酸序列差异属间较种间大, 可用于属间的分类等级研究; 且氨基酸序列间的差异比核苷酸序列间的差异小的多, 因而根据核苷酸序列构建了NJ与ME分子系统树。进化树直观地表明在亲缘进化关系上芸薹属与萝卜属较近, 其他依次为山芥属、蔊菜属、拟南芥属, 与荠菜属最远。研究结果有助于从分子水平阐明十字花科植物间的亲缘进化关系, 可为其种质资源利用提供理论依据。  相似文献

Tertiary cormorant fossils (Aves: Phalacrocoracidae) from Late Oligocene deposits in Australia are described. They derive from the Late Oligocene – Early Miocene (26–24 Mya) Etadunna and Namba Formations in the Lake Eyre and Lake Frome Basins, South Australia, respectively. A new genus, Nambashag gen. nov. , with two new species ( Nambashag billerooensis sp. nov. , 30 specimens; Nambashag microglaucus sp. nov. , 14 specimens), has been established. Phylogenetic analyses based on 113 morphological and two integumentary characters indicated that Nambashag is the sister taxon to the Early Miocene Nectornis miocaenus of Europe and all extant phalacrocoracids. As Nambashag, Nectornis, and extant phalacrocoracids constitute a strongly supported clade sister to Anhinga species, the fossil taxa have been referred to Phalacrocoracidae. Sulids and Fregata were successive sister taxa to the Phalacrocoracoidea, i.e. phalacrocoracids + Anhinga. As phalacrocoracids lived in both Europe and Australia during the Late Oligocene and no older phalacrocoracid taxa are known, the biogeographical origin of cormorants remains unanswered. The phylogenetic relationships of extant taxa were not wholly resolved, but contrary to previous morphological analyses, considerable concordance was found with relationships recovered by recent molecular analyses.
