Ecological problems associated with current antifouling technologies have increased interest in the natural strategies that marine organisms use to keep their surfaces clean and free from fouling. Bacteria isolated from living surfaces in the marine environment have been shown to produce chemicals that are potential antifoulants. Active compounds from the cells and culture supernatant of two bacterial strains, FS‐55 and NudMB50–11, isolated from surface of the seaweed, Fucus serratus, and the nudibranch, Archidoris pseudoargus, respectively, were extracted using solid phase extraction. The extracts were combined with acrylic base paint resin and assayed for antifouling activity by measuring their ability to inhibit the growth of fouling bacteria. These formulations were found to be active against fouling bacteria isolated from marine surfaces. The formulation of antifouling paints that incorporate marine microbial natural products is reported here for the first time. This is a significant advance towards the production of an environmentally friendly antifouling paint that utilises a sustainable supply of natural biodegradable compounds.  相似文献

A screening of antifouling activity from plants extracts led to selection and further study of Maesa lanceolata Forssk. Two p‐benzoquinone compounds were isolated from the fruits and found to be active against Artemia salina. The anti‐crustacean activity of both p‐benzoquinones is reported for the first time.  相似文献

Close‐up underwater photography and image analysis were used to quantify mesh occlusion by biofouling of salmon‐cage netting. This technique allows fast, non‐destructive sampling of cages in situ for the determination of temporal and spatial changes in fouling. The area of net blockage can be easily determined, allowing rapid evaluation of cleaning or antifouling performance.  相似文献

This systematic review examines effects of surface texture on marine biofouling and characterizes key research methodologies. Seventy-five published articles met selection criteria for qualitative analysis; experimental data from 36 underwent quantitative meta-analysis. Most studies investigated fouling mechanisms and antifouling performance only in laboratory assays with one to several test species. Textures were almost exclusively a single layer of regularly arranged geometric features rather than complex hierarchical or irregular designs. Textures in general had no effect or an inconclusive effect on fouling in 46% of cases. However, effective textures more often decreased (35%) rather than increased (19%) fouling. Complex designs were more effective against fouling (51%) than were regular geometric features (32%). Ratios of feature height, width, or pitch to organism body length were significant influences. The authors recommend further research on promising complex and hierarchical texture designs with more test species, as well as field studies to ground-truth laboratory results.  相似文献

Abstract

Stimuli and events that animals have to learn about in both their natural environments and in modern environments, such as our homes and farms, are often “multisensory,” i.e., they usually occur in more than one sensory modality. There are studies in humans and animals showing that stimuli that are multisensory are learned more quickly than stimuli presented in just a single sensory modality. My aim is to highlight how animals can combine information from several sensory modalities simultaneously, and show how using multisensory stimuli in training can enhance an animal's ability to learn new behaviors.  相似文献

The present study tested two diver-operated rotating brush systems, coupled with suction and collection capabilities, to determine their efficacy in the management of vessel biofouling. Both rotating brush systems proved effective (>80%) in removing low-to-moderate levels of fouling from flat and curved experimental surfaces (Perspex plates). However, performance was generally poorer at removing more advanced levels of fouling. In particular, mature calcareous organisms were relatively resistant to the rotating brushes, with a high proportion (up to 50%) remaining on plates following treatment. On average, >95% of defouled material was collected and retained by both systems. The amount of lost material generally increased when treating curved plates with increasing biomass, whereas the material lost from flat plates was typically less and remained relatively constant throughout the trials. The majority (>80%) of fouling not captured by the systems was crushed by the brushes (ie non-viable). However, a diverse range of viable organisms (eg barnacles and hydroids) was lost to the environment during the defouling trials. When defouling a vessel, unintentional detachment of fouling organisms is likely to be high through physical disturbance by divers operating the devices and by associated equipment (eg hoses). Furthermore, residual biosecurity risks are also likely to remain due to diver error, persistent fouling remaining on treated surfaces and the inaccessibility of niche areas to the brush systems. To address these limitations, further research into alternative treatment methods is required.  相似文献

Submerged marine surfaces are rapidly colonized by fouling organisms. Current research is aimed at finding new, non-toxic, or at least environmentally benign, solutions to this problem. Barnacles are a major target organism for such control as they constitute a key component of the hard fouling community. A range of standard settlement assays is available for screening test compounds against barnacle cypris larvae, but they generally provide little information on mechanism(s) of action. Towards this end, a quick and reliable video-tracking protocol has been developed to study the behaviour of the cypris larvae of the barnacle, Balanus amphitrite, at settlement. EthoVision 3.0 was used to track individual cyprids in 30-mm Petri dishes. Experiments were run to determine the optimal conditions vis-à-vis acclimation time, tracking duration, number of replicates, temperature and lighting. A protocol was arrived at involving a two Petri dish system with backlighting, and tracking over a 5-min period after first acclimating the cyprids to test conditions for 2 min. A minimum of twenty replicates was required to account for individual variability in cyprid behaviour from the same batch of larvae. This methodology should be widely applicable to both fundamental and applied studies of larval settlement and with further refinements, to that of smaller fouling organisms such as microalgae and bacteria.  相似文献

Marine bacteria from the hull of a ship in the form of biofilms or microfouling were isolated, cultured, and identified by phylogenetic analysis using 16S rDNA sequences. With an average length of 946 bp, all the 16 sequences were classified using the Ribosomal database project (RDP) and were submitted to the National Center for Biotechnology Information. Phylogenetic analysis using 16S rDNA sequences indicated that the 16 strains belonged to the Firmicutes (IK-MB6 Exiguobacterium aurantiacum, IK-MB7 Exiguobacterium arabatum, IK-MB8 Exiguobacterium arabatum, IK-MB9 Jeotgalibacillus alimentarius, IK-MB10 Bacillus megaterium, IK-MB11 Bacillus pumilus, IK-MB12 Bacillus pumilus, IK-MB13 Bacillus pumilus, IK-MB14 Bacillus megaterium), High GC, Gram-positive bacteria (IK-MB2 Micrococcus luteus, IK-MB5 Micrococcus luteus, IK-MB16 Arthrobacter mysorens), G-Proteobacteria (IK-MB3 Halomonas aquamarina, IK-MB15 Halotalea alkalilenta), CFB group bacteria (IK-MB1 Myroides odoratimimus), and Enterobacteria (IK-MB4 Proteus mirabilis). Among the 16 strains, representatives of the Firmicutes were dominant (56.25%) compared to the high GC, Gram-positive bacteria (18.75%), G-Proteobacteria (12.5%), CFB group bacteria (6.25%), and Enterobacteria (6.25%). Analysis revealed that majority of marine species found in marine biofilm are of anthropogenic origin.  相似文献

Thermophilic and metal-oxidizing bacteria were identified in shallow hydrothermal vents on the western Mexican coast. The role of these bacteria in biomineralization processes observed in the vents is explained, and the effect of the vents on biodiversity of prokaryotes is discussed. Research was done at two shallow hydrothermal vent sites: Bahía Concepción (BC) in the Baja California Peninsula and Punta Mita (PM), on the central Pacific coast. Temperature at the sediments proximal to the vents was similar, but the redox potentials (0.5 V in BC and ?0.3 V in PM) and pH (6.2 in BC and as low as 4.5 in PM) differed. The composition of the discharged water ranged from nearly seawater to lower-salinity fluids, and the gas phase was mainly CO2 at BC and N2 and CH4 at PM. The study focuses on the biogeochemical processes related to the different species of bacteria present in the studied sites, which are involved in the anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM), seawater sulfate reduction, and metal oxidation. The detected bacterial lineages represented typical deep vent species, which disproves a previous hypothesis that proposed that different consortia were populating deep and shallow hydrothermal vents. The results obtained here show that the main parameter affecting the bacterial groups present in shallow vents was the redox potential: gamma-, delta-, and epsilon proteobacteria as well as Bacteriodetes are present under the oxidizing conditions of BC, and Thermotogae, Aquificae, and Planctomycetes are present in PM. Sunlight abundance favored the prevalence of halophilic and Chlorofleaxae bacteria in both areas.  相似文献

Hermit‐crab transported shells of the West Indian top shell Cittarium pica occur in numerous terrestrial fossil deposits on Bermuda, which is the most remote outpost of this Caribbean species. Cittarium is so far known only from deposits of interglacial ages corresponding to marine isotope stages (MIS) 11, 9, 5e, and 1 (Holocene). In at least the cases of MIS 11 and 5e, Cittarium appears at the very beginning of the interglacial. The species is definitely absent from well‐stratified cave deposits of the last glacial (MIS 4–2). It is hypothesized that colder sea‐surface temperatures (SSTs) during glacial periods caused Cittarium to be extirpated on Bermuda, and that it has made at least four independent colonizations of the island in the past 400 000 years. Because of the limited larval life of Cittarium, the window for colonization may be a very narrow period at the onset of interglacials when the SST has risen sufficiently to make Bermuda habitable but the velocity of the Gulf Stream is still sufficiently rapid to transport viable larvae from the Bahamas. © 2013 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2013, 110 , 235–243.  相似文献
