Islands are often considered to be natural laboratories where repeated ‘evolutionary experiments’ have taken place. Consequently, islands have been key model systems in our understanding of evolutionary theory. The greater white‐toothed shrew (Crocidura russula) is of interest as it has invaded French Atlantic islands within the last few thousand years and is considered to be morphologically and genetically stable in this area. In this article, we study the shape of the mandible of the greater white‐toothed shrew on four islands and compare it with that of individuals from populations on the mainland to quantify the effects of insularity. The degree of insularity (i.e. island size and distance to the continent) is thought to be linked to differences in ecological characteristics of islands compared with the mainland. We used geometric morphometric analyses to quantify differences in size and shape between populations and employed a simple biomechanical model to evaluate the potential effects of shape differences on bite force. Specimens from island populations are different from continental populations in shape and mechanical potential of the mandible. Among islands, the mandible shows various shapes that are correlated with both the distance from the coast and island area. The shape differences are located on different parts of the mandible, suggesting different ecological constraints on each island. Moreover, these shapes are linked to the ‘mechanical potential’, which is markedly different between islands. Mechanical potential has been suggested to evolve in response to prey size and or mechanical properties. In conclusion, our results show that, in spite of the relatively recent colonization of the Atlantic Islands, the mandible of C. russula possesses a distinct shape. Convergent evolution in similar environments constitutes strong evidence of adaptive evolution. Transported with people around the world, house mice colonized even remote areas, such as Sub‐Antarctic islands. There, they returned to a feral way of life, shifting towards a diet enriched in terrestrial macroinvertebrates. Here, we test the hypothesis that this triggered convergent evolution of the mandible, a morphological character involved in food consumption. Mandible shape from four Sub‐Antarctic islands was compared to phylogeny, tracing the history of colonization, and climatic conditions. Mandible shape was primarily influenced by phylogenetic history, thus discarding the hypothesis of convergent evolution. The biomechanical properties of the jaw were then investigated. Incisor in‐lever and temporalis out‐lever suggested an increase in the velocity of incisor biting, in agreement with observations on various carnivorous and insectivorous rodents. The mechanical advantage related to incisor biting also revealed an increased functional performance in Sub‐Antarctic populations, and appears to be an adaptation to catch prey more efficiently. The amount of change involved was larger than expected for a plastic response, suggesting microevolutionary processes were evolved. This study thus denotes some degree of adaptive convergent evolution related to changes in habitat‐related changes in dietary items in Sub‐Antarctic mice, but only regarding simple, functionally relevant aspects of mandible morphology.  相似文献

Species of Eunice are distributed worldwide, inhabiting soft and hard marine bottoms. Some of these species play significant roles in coral reef communities and others are commercially important. Eunice is the largest and most poorly defined genus in Eunicidae. It has traditionally been subdivided in taxonomically informal groups based on the colour and dentition of subacicular hooks, and branchial distribution. The monophyly of Eunice and of its informal subgroups is tested here using cladistic analyses of 24 ingroup species based on morphological data. In the phylogenetic hypothesis resulting from the present analyses Eunice and its subgroups are paraphyletic; the genus may be divided in at least two monophyletic groups, Eunice s.s. and Leodice , but several species do not fall inside these two groups. Most of the traditional characters used in the taxonomy of Eunice are homoplasies; however, characters used for the first time in this study, such as certain jaw characters and characters derived from a close examination of chaetal variation along the body, are promising sources of phylogenetic signal.  © 2007 The Linnean Society of London, Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2007, 150 , 413–434.  相似文献

BACKGROUND:

Bloom''s syndrome, an autosomal recessive inherited disorder, belongs to the group of chromosomal breakage syndromes. The clinical diagnosis of BS is confirmed cytogenetically. Its frequency in the general population is unknown but it is common in eastern European Ashkenazi Jews.

CASE REPORT:

A 12-year-old girl was referred to us because of short stature. She was the second child of the first cousin marriage. She had a slender body frame, short stature, and microcephaly. Her face was long and narrow with prominent nose, and malar and mandibular hypoplasia. The spots of hyper and hypo pigmentation were observed in the trunk and limbs. Telangectasia spots were observed in some areas of the trunk. Additionally, generalized hirsutism was present in the whole body. Cytogenetic findings revealed an abnormality in the structural chromosome.

CONCLUSION:

This is the first BS case that has been reported in Iranian female population.  相似文献

The Asian long‐horned beetle (ALB) is one of the most important wood‐boring insects worldwide that damages broad‐leaved trees, primarily poplar, willow, elm and maple. Based on the color of the spots on the elytra, the beetles are separated into white‐spotted (ALB‐W) and yellow‐spotted (ALB‐Y) Asian long‐horned beetles. In order to clarify the morphology of sensilla on antenna, maxillary palp and labial palp of ALB‐W and ALB‐Y larvae, we studied the typology, morphology, number and distribution of the sensilla by scanning electron microscopy. The results showed that: (i) the antennae of two biotypes had five types of sensilla, including three types of sensilla basiconica (b.) and two types of sensilla twig basiconica (s.tb); numbers of b.1, b.2, b.3 and s.tb1 on antenna were not significantly different (P > 0.05) between two biotypes, and the numbers of s.tb2 were significantly different (P < 0.05); (ii) the maxillary palp of two biotypes had four types of sensilla, including sensilla styloconica (st.), two types of s.tb and digitiform sensilla (ds.); the numbers of st. and ds. on the maxillary palp were not significantly different (P > 0.05) between two biotypes, and the numbers of s.tb1 and s.tb2 were significantly different (P < 0.05); (iii) the labial palp of two biotypes had four types of sensilla, including b., st. and two types of s.tb, and the numbers of b.3, st., s.tb1 and s.tb2 on the labial palp were not significantly different (P > 0.05) between two biotypes. We discuss the relationships between sensilla and damage caused by the larvae inside the host trees.  相似文献

Homology between the lacinia mobilis of peracarid crustaceans (Malacostraca) and movable appendages of the mandibular edge in other crustaceans, hexapods, and myriapods has been advocated in classical as well as recent phylogenetic studies, and in some cases this feature has been attributed major significance in arthropod systematics. A comparative SEM survey of the lacinia mobilis in Peracarida and its alleged homologues (prostheca of Hexapoda, internal tooth of Diplopoda, ‘lacinia mobilis’ of Symphyla and Remipedia) rejects the primary homology of these varied structures. The lacinia mobilis of Peracarida can be characterized precisely by asymmetry on the left and right mandibles, as a strong tooth-like structure on the left mandible which is oriented at a right angle to the remaining edge and as a stalked, spine-like structure on the right mandible. A fundamental difference to other Malacostraca is that the peracarid lacinia mobilis characterizes the adult mandibles. Supposed homologues of the peracarid lacinia mobilis are instead a modified pectinate lamella (Diplopoda, Chilognatha) or a movable appendage that is associated with the pars molaris rather than the pars incisivus (Symphyla), or an inner separation of the incisor process (Remipedia). The detailed structure of the prostheca in Campodeoida and Ephemeroptera weakens interpretations of its origin as a separation of the incisor process.  相似文献

Measurements of the height of the mandibular body and the length of the palate rest on the assumption that the alveolar parts of the mandible and maxilla are not altered. Unfortunately, in the skeletal remains of the past population most of the molar teeth are often antemortem lost and this tooth loss is followed by resorption of the alveolar ridge. A new method of taking mandibular and palate measurements, which could be used in these cases is proposed in the study.  相似文献

The male of the austrochilid spider Thaida chepu Platnick, 1987 is described for the first time. We analyzed the internal anatomy of the palpal organ by using micro-computed tomography to investigate the spermophor as well as the muscles and tendons in the cymbium and tibia in detail. As shown by our data, muscles 29 and 30 originate in the tibia and continue with tendons to the base of the bulb, which resembles the ancestral organization for the male palp of spiders; this condition has not been described for Araneomorphae until now. The 3D reconstruction of the spermophor confirms recent interpretations of the male palp sclerites within Austrochilidae.  相似文献
