Old World species of the genus Glenanthe are treated comprehensively with an emphasis on the unusually diverse morphological heterogeneity discovered in structures of the male terminalia. As perspective for this treatment, the tribe Lipochaetini, in which Glenanthe is placed, is characterized and discussed, and an annotated key to the four included genera is provided to facilitate their identification. Glenanthe is demonstrated to be a monophyletic lineage within Lipochaetini. Seven Old World species of Glenanthe are now known, including two new Afrotropical species as follows (type locality in parenthesis): G. namibia n. sp. (Namibia. Mukwe: Divuju: Okavango River [18°04’04”S, 21°28’51”E] and G. danielssoni n. sp. (Republic of South Africa. Cape Province: De Hoop Nature Reserve [34°27’S, 28°25’E]. The identity of G. fuscinervis Becker, revised status (raised from synonymy with G. ripicola (Haliday)), is clarified, and found to be conspecific with Hydrina ochracea Oldenberg, which is recognized as a junior synonym. Papp’s synonymy of Glenanthe fasciventris Becker with Hydrellia (Glenanthe) ripicola Haliday is confirmed, and herein we relegate G. iranica Canzoneri & Rampini also as junior synonym of G. ripicola. Thymus vulgaris is a gynodioecious species (in which females and hermaphrodites coexist) with a highly variable frequency of females among natural populations (5–95%) and a high average female frequency (60%). Sex determination involves both cytoplasmic genes responsible for male sterility, i.e. the female phenotype, and specific nuclear factors responsible for the restoration of male fertility, and thus a hermaphrodite phenotype. In this study, molecular markers of the mitochondrial genome have been used to quantify the cytoplasmic diversity in 11 clumps of individuals observed in four recently founded populations. The very low diversity within patches in conjunction with the strong diversity among patches strongly suggests that clumps of individuals are the result of single matrilinear families. In clumps that contain mainly females, all the analysed females showed the same cytoplasmic pattern. This pattern differed from that shown by neighbouring hermaphrodites, indicating that the determination of sex is locally cytoplasmic. A comparison of genetic diversity before and after fire in one population showed that disturbances may cause a reduction in genetic diversity and a concurrent induction of local cytoplasmic determination of sex. Such cytoplasmic determination of sex in colonizing populations, together with the greater seed set of females, may largely improve the colonizing ability of the species. 相似文献

When male insects guard females until oviposition, the benefitsfrom last-male sperm precedence must outweigh the costs of relinquishingadditional fertilizations. The profitability of guarding isincreased when males guard large, fecund females and when femalesare scarce because fewer fertilizations are sacrificed. However,the male reproductive success is not only determined by theprofitability of guarding but also by his ability to maintainguarding. In this study, we used male carrion beetles (Necrophilaamericana) to examine the effects of sex ratio, male relativesize, and female quality on the ability to guard. First, wepresent a model of mate guarding that explores factors, suchas sperm precedence, sex ratio, male size, and female quality,that influence the profitability of postcopulatory riding. Ourmodel predicts that large N. americana males should preferentiallyguard the largest female only when the sex ratio is male biasedand sperm precedence is above 80%. In contrast, small malesgain little from guarding because they are not likely to maintainit and be the last male to mate. Then, we tested these predictionsby manipulating sex ratio, relative male size, and female quality.All males in equal sex ratio and large males in male-biasedsex ratio guarded females significantly longer than did malesin female-biased sex ratio. In male-biased sex ratio, largemales guarded significantly longer and achieved more takeoversthan small males. Large females were guarded longer. (1–3 copies). Most of these copies were not linked and segregated in the next generation.

Female dominance and feeding priority are considered unique behavioral strategies in many Malagasy lemuriformes, particularly Lemur catta. Two hypotheses have been introduced to explain these behavior patterns: 1) females are agonistically dominant over males to mitigate female-male food competition so that females can compensate for high energy demands and inefficient reproductive physiology, and 2) males defer to females when feeding as a reproductive strategy. We tested these hypotheses by conducting controlled feeding experiments on free-ranging ring-tailed lemurs (Lemur catta) on St. Catherine's Island, GA. Food was dispersed in three ways to simulate varying patch sizes. All feeding and agonistic interactions were recorded during each trial (n = 24). The degree of relatedness between individuals was determined using DNA fingerprinting. There was a clear relationship between food dispersion and both expression of female dominance and feeding priority. Elements of both hypotheses were supported because male and female L. catta used different strategies depending on rank and the dispersion of food. Interpretation of the impact of male rank was complicated because the younger, low-ranking males had female relatives in the group. Females fed more than males, and rates of aggression decreased as food dispersion increased. High-ranking, older unrelated males deferred to females and received little aggression. The top-ranking male deferred the most and sired most if not all of the offspring. Low-ranking, younger related males fought with females for access to food sources, received more aggression, and did not sire offspring. 相似文献

Evolutionary theories of senescence assume that mutations with age-specific effects exist, yet until now, there has been little
experimental evidence to support this assumption. In this study, we allowed mutations to accumulate in an outbred, wild population
of Drosophila melanogaster to test for age-specific differences in both male mating ability and fecundity. We assayed for age-specific effects of mutations
after 10, 20, and 30 generations of mutation accumulation. For mating ability, we found the strongest effects of mutations
in the first half of the life span after 20 generations, and at nearly all ages by generation 30. These results are qualitatively
consistent with results from a companion study in which age-specific mortality was assayed on the same lines of D. melanogaster. By contrast, effects of fecundity were confined to late ages after 20 generations of mutation accumulation, but by generation
30, as with male mating ability, effects of novel mutations were distributed across all age classes. We discuss several possible
explanations for the differences that we observe between generations within traits, and among traits, and the relevance for
these patterns to models of aging as well as models of mate choice and sexual selection.

Effects of sequential pollination on the success of "fast" and "slow" pollen donors in Hibiscus moscheutos (Malvaceae) 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Competition among pollen grains for the chance to fertilize ovules typically involves two stages: arrival times on stigmas and/or the growth of pollen tubes through styles. In a previous study of Hibiscus moscheutos, we found that individual pollen donors often differed in pollen tube competitive ability. Here we determined whether short delays in pollen arrival time altered the average success of "fast" and "slow" pollen donors when both types of pollen experienced the same delays. Hand-pollination experiments were carried out using four pairs of pollen donors that differed in competitive ability. We allowed delays of 15 or 30 min between the first and second pollen donor and then determined seed paternity using allozyme markers. The second donor typically sired fewer seeds than pollen that arrived earlier, but, contrary to expectation, "faster" pollen did not always sire significantly more seeds than "slower" pollen when each was applied after delays of the same duration. In two of the four pairs of donors, differences that were seen following simultaneous pollinations disappeared when each type of pollen was applied following identical delays of 15 or 30 min. This unexpected response suggests that the dynamics of pollen tube competition are more complex than anticipated. 相似文献

The genetics of male fertility restoration and the RFLP of mitochondrial DNA were studied for 16 sunflower cytoplasms (15 male-sterile and a male-fertile).Male fertility restoration/male sterility maintenance patterns distinguished 12 cytotypes. Four cytoplasms were completely unrestored so they were not distinguished genetically. The sunflower lines, tested for their restorer/maintenance reaction, showed that there was a continuous range between 0% and 100% of restorer genotypes according to the CMS considered. Restoration/maintenance patterns indicated that at least some restorer genes are specific to certain CMS.RFLP of mitochondrial DNA revealed specific differences between the cytotypes studied. Three restriction enzymes and 12 probes permitted distinction of 13 cytotypes. No relationship exists between CMS cytotypes and the species from which they originated.For genetical and mitochondrial RFLP studies, phenograms were constructed according to the similarity indexes between cytotypes. Most of the CMS defined by restoration patterns correspond with a restriction fragment pattern of mitochondrial DNA. 相似文献

The organization, isolation and physiology of the angiosperm male gamete has recently emerged as an area of special interest. Detailed in vivo studies have revealed: (1) that the functional unit of male reproduction is a'male germ unit,'composed of two sperm cells and a physically associated vegetative nucleus; (2) that the two sperm cells are often cytoplasmically dimorphic, and (3) that some sperm cells appear to undergo preferential fertilization, preferentially fusing with either the egg or the proendospermaric central cell. Male gamete isolation has provided enrichments of up to 107 cells ml–1 , with sperm integrity and viability demonstrated by the flunrochromatic reaction and ATP levels. Although results from biochemical and hybridoma antibody characterization are still preliminary, they indicate that sperm cells possess polypeptide expression patterns that are different from those of surrounding cells. These findings suggest the existence of an independent developmental program in the angiosperm male gamete. 相似文献
