Aims Major patterns and determinants of the species richness of Sphingidae in the Malesian archipelago were investigated, including a distinction of richness patterns between subfamilies and range‐size classes. Location Southeast Asia, Malesia. Methods Using a compilation of specimen‐label data bases, geographic information system (GIS)‐supported estimates of distributional ranges for all Sphingidae species of Southeast Asia were used to assess the species richness of islands. Range maps for all species and checklists for 114 islands can be found at http://www.sphingidae‐sea.biozentrum.uni‐wuerzburg.de . Potential determinants of the species richness of islands were tested with general linear models. Results The estimated species richness of islands in the region is determined by biogeographical association, seasonality, availability of rain forest and island size. Species–area relationships are linear on a semi‐logarithmic representation, but not on a double‐logarithmic scale. Species richness of all sphingid subfamilies is influenced by biogeography. The presence of large rain‐forest areas affects mainly Smerinthinae, whereas distance from continental Asia is conspicuously irrelevant for this group. Widespread rather than geographically restricted species shape the overall distribution patterns of species richness. The altitudinal range of islands does not significantly affect species‐richness patterns, but its potential effects on geographically restricted species are discussed. Main conclusions As well as being affected by climatic and vegetation parameters, sphingid species richness is strongly influenced by a historical, directional dispersal process from continental Southeast Asia to the Pacific islands. This process did not apply equally to species of different taxonomic groups or range sizes. Widespread species decline in species richness towards the south‐east, whereas geographically restricted species exhibit an inverse pattern of species richness, probably because speciation becomes more important in this group within the more isolated island groups.  相似文献

Bulbuls (Aves: Pycnonotidae) are a fairly speciose (ca. 130 sp.) bird family restricted to the Old World. Family limits and taxonomy have been revised substantially over the past decade, but a comprehensive molecular phylogeny for the family has not been undertaken. Using nuclear and mitochondrial DNA sequences, we reconstructed a well-supported phylogenetic hypothesis for the bulbuls. Three basal lineages were identified: a large African clade, a large Asian clade that also included African Pycnonotus species, and the monotypic African genus Calyptocichla. The African clade was sister to the other two lineages, but this placement did not have high branch support. The genus Pycnonotus was not monophyletic because three species (eutilotus, melanoleucos, and atriceps) were highly diverged from the other species and sister to all other Asian taxa. Additional taxon sampling is needed to further resolve relationships and taxonomy within the large and variable Hypsipetes complex.  相似文献

Although the Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex (MTBC) infects a third of all humans, little is known regarding the prevalence of mycobacterial infection in nonhuman primates (NHP). For more than a century, tuberculosis has been regarded as a serious infectious threat to NHP species. Advances in the detection of MTBC open new possibilities for investigating the effects of this poorly understood pathogen in diverse populations of NHP. Here, we report results of a cross-sectional study using well-described molecular methods to detect a nucleic acid sequence (IS6110) unique to the MTBC. Sample collection was focused on the oral cavity, the presumed route of transmission of MTBC. Buccal swabs were collected from 263 macaques representing 11 species in four Asian countries and Gibraltar. Contexts of contact with humans included free ranging, pets, performing monkeys, zoos, and monkey temples. Following DNA isolation from buccal swabs, the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplified IS6110 from 84 (31.9%) of the macaques. In general, prevalence of MTBC DNA was higher among NHP in countries where the World Health Organization reports higher prevalence of humans infected with MTBC. This is the first demonstration of MTBC DNA in the mouths of macaques. Further research is needed to establish the significance of this finding at both the individual and population levels. PCR of buccal samples holds promise as a method to elucidate the mycobacterial landscape among NHP, particularly macaques that thrive in areas of high human MTBC prevalence.  相似文献

Knowledge of what constitute normal serum immunoglobulin (Ig) concentrations are important for the diagnosis of immunologic disorders. Data on normal Ig evaluated by nephelometry are limited in healthy Asian children, none being available for Thai children. One hundred and forty-eight healthy Thai children aged 2-15 years were tested for serum immunoglobulins G, A, M, G1, G2, G3, and G4 (Ig G, A, M, G1, G2, G3, and G4) by nephelometry. Sixty-three percent were girls of median interquartile range age 6.9 (4.8-9.7) years. The geometric means for each Ig were summarized and categorized by age. Statistical analyses were used to compare Igs between sexes and age groups, and to compare IgG in this study with data from other published studies. The average ratios of IgG subclasses/IgG for Ig G1:2:3:4 were 66:22:5:7%. IgG, IgA, IgG2, and IgG3 concentrations showed a gradual increase with increasing age. There were no significant sex differences for any immunoglobulin isotype (P= 0.971). Our mean IgG concentration was lower than that measured by the radial diffusion method in healthy Thai children (P < 0.05). In all age groups, the mean IgG concentration in our study was significantly higher than that reported in Turkish and USA children, evaluated by the nephelometric and radial diffusion techniques, respectively (both P < 0.001). This study provides information about normal Ig concentrations measured by nephelometry in healthy Asian children and illustrates the importance of ascertaining normal Ig values for age- and ethnic-matched controls using the same assay to diagnose immunologic disorders correctly.  相似文献

The oriental fruit fly, Bactrocera dorsalis, is a serious pest of fruits and vegetables in South‐east Asia, and, because of quarantine restrictions, impedes international trade and economic development in the region. Revealing genetic variation in oriental fruit fly populations will provide a better understanding of the colonization process and facilitate the quarantine and management of this species. The genetic structure in 15 populations of oriental fruit fly from southern China, Laos and Myanmar in South‐east Asia was examined with a 640‐bp sequence of the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI) gene. The highest levels of genetic diversity were found in Laos and Myanmar. Low to medium levels of genetic differentiation (FST ≤ 0.134) were observed among populations. Pooled populations from mainland China differed from those in Laos and Myanmar (FST = 0.024). Genetic structure across the region did not follow the isolation‐by‐distance model. The high genetic diversity observed in Laos and Myanmar supports the South‐east Asian origin of B. dorsalis. High genetic diversity and significant differentiation between some populations within mainland China indicate B. dorsalis populations have been established in the region for an extended period of time. High levels of genetic diversity observed among the five populations from Hainan Island and similarity between the Island and Chinese mainland populations indicate that B. dorsalis was introduced to Hainan from the mainland and has been on the island for many years. High genetic diversity in the recently established population in Shanghai (Pudong) suggests multiple introductions or a larger number of founders.  相似文献

An antitropical distribution represents an intriguing disjunction, in which a given species or sister lineages occupy regions north and south of the tropics but are absent from the intervening areas. Solenogyne mikadoi endemic to the Ryukyu Archipelago is regarded as an Australian element. Testing the phylogenetic relationship with Australian congeners and discussing the onset timing and causes of the disjunction would potentially enhance the understanding of antitropical distribution. A nuclear ribosomal DNA phylogeny was reconstructed using Bayesian and most parsimonious criteria with allied genera. Solenogyne was monophyletic and clustered with Lagenophora huegelii endemic to Australia, indicating the antitropical distribution and Australian origin of Solenogyne. Multispecies coalescent analysis based on nuclear ribosomal DNA and chloroplast DNA indicated the divergence of S. mikadoi and Australian congeners in the Plio‐Pleistocene. Phylogenetic network analyses suggested that the ancestral lineage of S. mikadoi first colonized the southernmost island in the archipelago and then dispersed northward. The migration to the archipelago likely followed the flourishing of Solenogyne in open vegetation communities that radiated in south‐eastern Australia during the late Pliocene. This disjunction might arise through long‐distance dispersal across the tropics or, alternatively, through extinction in the tropics as a result of unsuitably high temperatures during climate oscillation and/or competitions from diverse tropical flora surviving since the early Tertiary. © 2011 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2012, 105 , 197–217.  相似文献

The genus Entoloma comprises diverse trophic modes and basidiome morphologies. Although Entoloma includes some sequestrate species, their origins are not clearly understood in relation to phylogenetic position and trophic status. In this study, we collected 34 sequestrate Entoloma specimens in Japan over a 9-y period. Their identities and phylogenetic positions were determined by molecular analyses using three nuclear loci [internal transcribed spacer (ITS) and large subunit (LSU) regions of rDNA and RNA polymerase II second LSU (rpb2) gene]. Based on species delimitation of 97 % sequence matches in the ITS region, which is a suitable region for species-level identification of higher fungi, we identified four sequestrate Entoloma species. Molecular phylogenetic analyses that included all related sequences in the International Nucleotide Sequence Database revealed that the four sequestrate Entoloma species belonged to two major phylogroups. One of the phylogroups was InocephalusCyanula, which is composed only of saprotrophic species. Three of the Japanese sequestrate species, as well as three previously known sequestrate species from other regions, fell into at least two independent clades in this phylogroup, indicating multiple origins of sequestrate forms within this saprotrophic lineage. Another phylogroup, Rhodopolioid, was also shown to include a sequestrate species for the first time. Because the Rhodopolioid phylogroup is composed exclusively of mycorrhizal species (ectomycorrhizal and tuberculate mycorrhizal species), the sequestrate form may also have evolved from a mycorrhizal ancestor. Our results suggest that sequestrate basidiomes have evolved multiple times, irrespective of their trophic status in Entoloma. Finally, based on molecular and morphological characteristics, here we describe two new sequestrate Entoloma species, i.e., Entoloma prismaticum Sasaki, Kinoshita et Nara, sp. nov. and Entoloma hypogaeum Sasaki, Kinoshita et Nara, sp. nov.  相似文献

The Southeast Asian species of the Aenictus javanus and Aenictus philippinensis groups are revised. Six species (four named and two new species) of the Aenictus javanus group occurring in this area are: Aenictus doydeei Jaitrong & Yamane, 2011, Aenictus duengkaei Jaitrong & Yamane, sp. n., Aenictus javanus Emery, 1896, Aenictus longinodus Jaitrong & Yamane, sp. n., Aenictus nishimurai Terayama & Kubota, 1993, and Aenictus piercei Wheeler & Chapman, 1930. Four species (three named and one new species) are recognized in the Aenictus philippinensis group: Aenictus pangantihoni Zettel & Sorger, 2010, Aenictus philippinensis Chapman, 1963, Aenictus punctatus Jaitrong & Yamane, sp. n., and Aenictus rabori Chapman, 1963. Aenictus piercei is removed from the members of the Aenictus piercei group sensu Jaitrong and Yamane (2011) and transferred to the Aenictus javanus group. Lectotypes and paralectotypes are designated for Aenictus piercei and Aenictus rabori. Size variation occurs among individuals from single colonies of the Aenictus javanus group, while the workers in the Aenictus philippinensis group are clearly monomorphic.  相似文献
