Mechanisms of magnesium homeostasis intensively studied over the last 10–15 years by means of pathophysiological and molecular genetic approaches have been considered. Impairments of magnesium homeostasis causes the development of magnesium-deficient states, which have been found in many common diseases (diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular diseases, chronic fatigue syndrome, alcoholism, psychiatric and neurologic diseases, etc.), stress condition, effects of some environmental factors as well as therapy with some drugs. Special attention is paid to familial hypomagnesemias caused by genetic defects of magnesium transport systems. The review considers clinical and biochemical characteristics of twelve familial disorders including mechanisms of their development. Deeper understanding of mechanisms of regulation of magnesium homeostasis will results in the development of new approaches in diagnostics, prophylaxis and treatment of magnesium-deficient conditions. 相似文献

Mesocestoides corti (syn. vogae), as many other cestode platyhelminthes, contains abundant mineralized structures called calcareous corpuscles. These concretions may constitute as much as 40% of the dry weight of the organisms, but their function remains poorly understood. In this work, we reviewed the mineral composition of the calcareous corpuscles of M. corti. X-ray diffraction pattern showed that the major mineral component of the corpuscles is a hydrated form of calcium carbonate, monohydrocalcite, also confirmed by infrared spectrometry. The baseline shift of the X-ray diffraction spectra suggested the presence of amorphous calcium carbonate, accordingly to previous reports, and an organic matrix was confirmed by FTIR. Monohydrocalcite is a rare mineral unusually found in biominerals. Although the significance of monohydrocalcite in biominerals has not been determined, the knowledge of corpuscles composition is of relevance to establish their function and for the elucidation of the mechanisms involved in mineralization processes. 相似文献

A peculiar inward growth, named a “cell wall sac”, formed in mulberry (Morus alba) idioblasts, is a subcellular site for production of calcium carbonate crystals. On the basis of ultrastructural observations,
a fully expanded cell wall sac could be divided into two parts—an amorphous complex consisting of multi-layered compartments
with multiple fibers originating from the innermost cell wall layer, and a peripheral plain matrix with fiber aggregates.
Immunofluorescent localization showed that low and highly esterified pectin epitopes were detected at the early stages of
development of the cell wall sac, followed by complete disappearance from the both parts of fully enlarged mature sac. In
contrast, the xyloglucan epitope remained in the compartment complex; this was supported by the observation that the xyloglucan

The complexity of natural ecosystems makes it difficult to compare the relative importance of abiotic and biotic factors and to assess the effects of their interactions on ecosystem development. To improve our understanding of ecosystem complexity, we initiated an experiment designed to quantify the main effects and interactions of several factors that are thought to affect nutrient export from developing forest ecosystems. Using a replicated 2 × 2 × 4 factorial experiment, we quantified the main effects of these factors and the factor interactions on annual calcium, magnesium, and potassium export from field mesocosms over 4 years for two Vermont locations, two soils, and four different tree seedling communities. We found that the main effects explained 56%–97% of total variation in nutrient export. Abiotic factors (location and soil) accounted for a greater percentage of the total variation in nutrient export (47%–94%) than the biotic factor (plant community) (2%–15%). However, biotic control over nutrient export was significant, even when biomass was minimal. Factor interactions were often significant, but they explained less of the variation in nutrient export (1%–33%) than the main effects. Year-to-year fluctuations influenced the relative importance of the main effects in determining nutrient export and created factor interactions between most of the explanatory variables. Our study suggests that when research is focused on typically used main effects, such as location and soil, and interactions are aggregated into overall error terms, important information about the factors controlling ecosystem processes can be lost. 相似文献

Summary In the Western Dinarides the Lower Liassic carbonates are underlain by Upper Triassic “Hauptdolomit”, whereas the first appearance
of the foraminiferOrbitopsella praecursor (Gümbel) marks the beginning of the Middle Liassic. Their composition, observed at several localities in Western Croatia,
shows a correlation of sedimentation events, which took place during Early Liassic on the Adriatic-Dinaridic carbonate platform.
Facies variability is interpreted as result of autocyclic sedimentary processes on which the carbonate platform reacted by
periodical oscillations of sea-bottom near the fair-weather wavebase. As a consequence, the Lower Liassic carbonate successions
in the Dinarides is characterized by stacking of two main types of coarsening-upward parasequences: (1) the basal part of
the Lower Liassic succession is represented by parasequences composed of mudstones or pelletal-bioclastic wackestones as their
lower members, and peloidal-bioclastic wackestone/packstones to grain-stones as their upper members; and (2) the upper part
of the Lower Liassic succession with parasequences consisting of mudstones or pelletal-bioclastic wackestones overlain by
ooid grainstones. Judging from the composition of parasequences and thickness relations of their members, the first type is
interpreted to comprise late transgressive system tract (ITST) and/or early highstand system tract (eHST), while the second
type corresponds to a late highstand system tract (1HST) and/or early lowstand system tract (eLST) of a third-order sequence. 相似文献

Aim Electronic distribution atlases and lists of ecological indicator values are becoming important tools in plant geography. In this contribution, we combine a geographical and an ecological data bank, and map out patterns of indicator value spectra (instead of single or average values) across a physiographically complex landscape. For our study, we select indicators of soil pH and carbonate content as key environmental factors that strongly affect overall plant diversity patterns in the temperate zone. Our goal is to relate the distribution and diversity of plant groups that are indicators of soil pH and carbonate content to environmental controls at the landscape‐scale, and thus contribute to a causal understanding of species pools. Location We studied the Bavarian Alps, which represent the German portion of the Northern Alps. Methods Based on the existing floristic survey, we calculated relative frequencies of nine classes of indicator plants for soil pH and carbonate content in grid cells. The resulting attribute matrix (cells by indicator class frequencies) was subjected to principal components analysis and to k‐means clustering. Results were compared and mapped out in the grid array of the whole region, resulting in continuous and discrete representations of species pool structure. We used a geographical information system to derive physiographical landscape properties from a geological map and a digital elevation model, and analysed their statistical relationship with the shapes of indicator spectra. Results and Main conclusions Averages of indicator values for soil pH and carbonate content follow the geological structure quite closely. Surprisingly, the diversity of indicator plant groups does not appear to be a function of geological or topographic heterogeneity. Rather, it seems to be related to areas of high elevation with uniform geology. The effect is a matter of additional acidophytes in high mountain areas and, in the high calcareous Alps, extreme calciphytes, while species with intermediate requirements are rarer than usual. For explanation, we suggest two facts: (1) a frequent lack of mature soils at high elevations and (2) particularities in soil genetic processes occurring under the harsh climatic conditions of high mountains. 相似文献

The present investigation has been performed to evaluate nitrate reductase (NR) and nitrogenase activities as well as growth
and mineral nutrition of wheat plants grown under drought stress and inoculated with different Azospirillum strains (NR− and NR+). Fresh, dry mass and water content decreased with decreasing soil moisture content, which was accompanied with low soluble
sugars and soluble protein content and increase in the total amino acids content. Azospirillum inoculation with either bacterial strain (NR− and NR+) significantly increased the above characteristics even at 40 % moisture content. NR activity decreased in both the shoots
and roots by decreasing soil moisture content. NR+ strain exhibited increased root NR activity compared with uninoculated plants or inoculated with NR− strain. However, plants inoculated with NR−strain increased NR activity in the shoot more than in the root of the same plant and in the shoot of control plants. Inoculation
with either NR− and NR+
Azospirillum strains gave higher nitrogenase activity than uninoculated control plants. The low N supply (0.5 mM) did not affect nitrogenase
activity. NR−strain was less effective than NR+strain in promoting total N-yield, spike numbers and their mass per pot. Azospirillum inoculation exhibited no significant changes in wheat Mg2+ content. However, K+ and Ca2+ have shown significantly increased values. Azospirillum beneficial effect on plant N balance and growth are most probably composed of multiple mechanisms and beneficial NR is one
of them. The importance of Azospirillum NR+strains for increasing wheat resistance to water stress is also supported by the obtained data.

Summary Cool-water carbonates in the aphotic zone of deep shelf and continental margin settings in the Northeast Atlantic are produced
by the deep-water coral reefs withLophelia pertusa as the major framework builder. Through a compilation of side scan sonar, airgun and manned submersible surveys from several
cruises to the mid-Norwegian Sula Reef Complex (SRC), the facies pattern and zonation of one of the largest deep-water reefs
in the Northeast Atlantic is described in relation to the overall seabed topography. The late glacial to early postglacial
iceberg scour on the crest and shoulder of the Sula Ridge provides settling ground for the scleractinian corals already in
the early Holocene. Since then coral growth continues until today but was supposed to be disturbed by an environmental hazard,
the so-called second Storegga event. The distinct distribution pattern of individualLophelia reefs on the Sula Ridge has stimulated a discussion on intrinsic environmental controls such as the bentho-pelagic coupling
and the alternative hydrocarbon-based nutrition hypothesis. 相似文献

The altered plasma statuses of selected minerals (Ca, Mg, Cu, Zn) have been noted in a cluster of insulin resistance syndromes, including hypertension and diabetes mellitus. The differences in plasma values of these minerals in hypertensive men with and without insulin resistance, as evaluated by an insulin suppression test, were investigated. The results showed that the plasma values of determined minerals at fasting, 2 h after an oral glucose challenge, and after the insulin suppression test did not markedly differ between hypertensive subjects with and without insulin resistance. However, hypertensive subjects had significantly lower plasma Ca values at fasting and 2h after an oral glucose load, and higher fasting plasma Zn values, than normotensive controls. Hypertensive subjects also had higher steady-state plasma glucose values, higher Zn and lower Mg and Cu values after the insulin suppression test, when compared with controls. The present study suggests that altered plasma status of selected minerals in hypertension cannot be totally ascribed to the coexhibition of insulin resistance. 相似文献
