The developmental threshold is the minimum size or condition that a developing organism must have reached in order for a life-history transition to occur. Although developmental thresholds have been observed for many organisms, inter-population variation among natural populations has not been examined. Since isolated populations can be subjected to strong divergent selection, population divergence in developmental thresholds can be predicted if environmental conditions favour fast or slow developmental time in different populations. Amphibian metamorphosis is a well-studied life-history transition, and using a common garden approach we compared the development time and the developmental threshold of metamorphosis in four island populations of the common frog Rana temporaria: two populations originating from islands with only temporary breeding pools and two from islands with permanent pools. As predicted, tadpoles from time-constrained temporary pools had a genetically shorter development time than those from permanent pools. Furthermore, the variation in development time among females from temporary pools was low, consistent with the action of selection on rapid development in this environment. However, there were no clear differences in the developmental thresholds between the populations, indicating that the main response to life in a temporary pool is to shorten the development time. 相似文献

Objective: A review of the literature for intravascular papillary endothelial hyperplasia is presented along with a case report of a geriatric patient. Review of the literature: Intravascular papillary endothelial hyperplasia (IPEH) is a reactive benign lesion of vascular origin, which is caused by an excessive proliferation of endothelial cells. Only a few cases with IPEH in the oral cavity have been recorded in the literature, reporting the lower lip as the main site. The treatment of choice mentioned in the literature is simple excision. Case report: In this case, an IPEH of the lower lip of a 79‐year‐old male was treated by a sclerosing agent, which was injected into the lesion, causing compression and fibrosis of the blood vessels, followed by a careful dissection and excision. Intra‐operatively no bleeding occurred. Post‐operatively an excellent aesthetic result was achieved, without recurrence. Conclusion: The use of sclerotherapy followed by surgery in mixed type intravascular papillary endothelial hyperplasia can provide an acceptable aesthetic result with minimal intra‐operative bleeding. 相似文献

Life is based on replication and evolution. But replication cannot be taken for granted. We must ask what there was prior to replication and evolution. How does evolution begin? We have proposed prelife as a generative system that produces information and diversity in the absence of replication. We model prelife as a binary soup of active monomers that form random polymers. ‘Prevolutionary’ dynamics can have mutation and selection prior to replication. Some sequences might have catalytic activity, thereby enhancing the rates of certain prelife reactions. We study the selection criteria for these prelife catalysts. Their catalytic efficiency must be above certain critical values. We find a maintenance threshold and an initiation threshold. The former is a linear function of sequence length, and the latter is an exponential function of sequence length. Therefore, it is extremely hard to select for prelife catalysts that have long sequences. We compare prelife catalysis with a simple model for replication. Assuming fast template-based elongation reactions, we can show that replicators have selection thresholds that are independent of their sequence length. Our calculation demonstrates the efficiency of replication and provides an explanation of why replication was selected over other forms of prelife catalysis. 相似文献

Field measurements of hearing thresholds were obtained from the Atlantic sharpnose shark Rhizoprionodon terraenovae using the auditory evoked potential method (AEP). The fish had most sensitive hearing at 20 Hz, the lowest frequency tested, with decreasing sensitivity at higher frequencies. Hearing thresholds were lower than AEP thresholds previously measured for the nurse shark Ginglymostoma cirratum and yellow stingray Urobatis jamaicensis at frequencies <200 Hz, and similar at 200 Hz and above. Rhizoprionodon terraenovae represents the closest comparison in terms of pelagic lifestyle to the sharks which have been observed in acoustic field attraction experiments. The sound pressure levels that would be equivalent to the particle acceleration thresholds of R. terraenovae were much higher than the sound levels which attracted closely related sharks suggesting a discrepancy between the hearing threshold experiments and the field attraction experiments. 相似文献

Novel synthetic collagen fibers, poly(PHG) made by polycondensation of Pro-Hyp-Gly, spontaneously assume polymeric structure with molecular weights greater than 105. Its application for biomaterials has been explored, but that for a platelet agonist has not been investigated. Poly(PHG)-induced platelet aggregation independently of thromboxane A2 and integrin α2β1. Poly(PHG)-induced tyrosine phosphorylation of glycoprotein VI (GPVI)-related molecules and failed to activate GPVI/FcRγ-deficient platelets. Binding of GPVI to poly(PHG) was confirmed by a surface plasmon resonance spectroscopy, suggesting that poly(PHG) activates platelets through GPVI. Poly(PHG) is an useful research tool to investigate GPVI-mediated signals and a substitute for collagen in platelet functional assays. 相似文献

Underground water in volcanic areas contains vanadium when the basalt layer exists among igneous rocks. The concentration
of vanadium in drinking water sometimes exceeds 0.8 μM in these areas, however, the physiological effects of vanadium, especially non-toxic effects, at concentrations lower than
1 μM are unknown. In the present experiments, we examined the effect of pentavalent vanadium and tetravalent vanadium at 0.8
and 8.0 μM concentrations on the recognition threshold to taste substances in healthy college students. Pentavalent vanadium, ammonium
vanadate, lowered the sweet taste threshold to glucose at 0.8 and 8.0 μM as well. Tetravalent vanadium, vanadium sulfate, did not alter the threshold to glucose either at 8.0 μM or at 0.8 μM. Ammonium vanadate also decreased the sweet taste threshold to l-proline at 8.0 μM. Ammonium vanadate did not influence the sour taste threshold to hydrogen chloride. Neither ammonium sulfate nor ammonium
bicarbonate altered the sweet taste threshold to glucose. Therefore, the effect of ammonium vanadate on the sweet taste threshold
is attained by vanadium but not by ammonium. It was concluded that pentavalent vanadium at 0.8 μM intensifies the sweet taste sense to glucose rather specifically. We have first shown the physiological effect of vanadium

The consequences of regulatory T cell (Treg) inhibition of interleukine 2 secretion is examined by mathematical modelling. We demonstrate that cytokine dependent growth exhibits a quorum T cell population threshold that determines if immune responses develop on activation. Secretion inhibition manipulates the growth dynamics and effectively increases the quorum threshold, i.e. to develop immune responses a higher number of T cells need to be activated. Thus Treg induced secretion inhibition can provide a mechanism for tissue specific regulation of the balance between suppression (control) and immune responses, a balance that can be varied at the local tissue level through the regulation of the local active Treg population size. However, nonspecific inhibition is prone to escape of initially controlled autoimmune T cells through cross reactivity to pathogens and bystander proliferation on unrelated immune responses. 相似文献

Compartmentalization of unlinked, competing templates is widely accepted as a necessary step towards the evolution of complex organisms. However, preservation of information by templates confined to isolated vesicles of finite size faces much harder obstacles than by free templates: random drift allied to mutation pressure wipe out any template that does not replicate perfectly, no matter how small the error probability might be. In addition, drift alone hinders the coexistence of distinct templates in a same compartment. Here, we investigate the conditions for group selection to prevail over drift and mutation and hence to guarantee the maintenance and coexistence of distinct templates in a vesicle. Group selection is implemented through a vesicle survival probability that depends on the template composition. By considering the limit case of an infinite number of vesicles, each one carrying a finite number of templates, we were able to derive a set of recursion equations for the frequencies of vesicles with different template compositions. Numerical iteration of these recursions allows the exact characterization of the steady state of the vesicle population-a quasispecies of vesicles-thus revealing the values of the mutation and group selection intensities for which template coexistence is possible. Within the main assumption of the model-a fixed, finite or infinite, number of vesicles-we find no fundamental impediment to the coexistence of an arbitrary number of template types with the same replication rate inside a vesicle, except of course for the vesicle capacity. Group selection in the form of vesicle selection is a must for compartmentalized primordial genetic systems even in the absence of intra-genomic competition of different templates. 相似文献

The tommotiid Paterimitra pyramidalis Laurie, 1986, is redescribed based on well‐preserved material from the lower Cambrian Wilkawillina, Wirrapowie and Ajax limestones of the Flinders Ranges, South Australia. The material shows that the scleritome of Paterimitra pyramidalis includes three sclerite morphotypes (S1, S2 and L). Detailed shell microstructure studies show striking similarities with both the paterinid brachiopod Askepasma toddense and the tommotiid Eccentrotheca helenia, which strengthens the suggested evolutionary link between tommotiids and brachiopods. Based on the partly articulated specimens and similarities in shell microstructure and sclerite morphology with Eccentrotheca, Paterimitra pyramidalis is reconstructed as a tube‐dwelling, epifaunal, sessile, filter‐feeder with an organic pedicle‐like attachment structure. The proposed reconstruction of the scleritome comprises a basal unit composed of one S1 and one S2 sclerite, as well as an unresolved number of L sclerites lining a coniform tubular structure. 相似文献

Sex determination is often seen as a dichotomous process: individual sex is assumed to be determined either by genetic (genotypic sex determination, GSD) or by environmental factors (environmental sex determination, ESD), most often temperature (temperature sex determination, TSD). We endorse an alternative view, which sees GSD and TSD as the ends of a continuum. Both effects interact a priori, because temperature can affect gene expression at any step along the sex‐determination cascade. We propose to define sex‐determination systems at the population‐ (rather than individual) level, via the proportion of variance in phenotypic sex stemming from genetic versus environmental factors, and we formalize this concept in a quantitative‐genetics framework. Sex is seen as a threshold trait underlain by a liability factor, and reaction norms allow modeling interactions between genotypic and temperature effects (seen as the necessary consequences of thermodynamic constraints on the underlying physiological processes). As this formalization shows, temperature changes (due to e.g., climatic changes or range expansions) are expected to provoke turnovers in sex‐ determination mechanisms, by inducing large‐scale sex reversal and thereby sex‐ratio selection for alternative sex‐determining genes. The frequency of turnovers and prevalence of homomorphic sex chromosomes in cold‐blooded vertebrates might thus directly relate to the temperature dependence in sex‐determination mechanisms. 相似文献
