To determine the relationship between drought, abscisic acid (ABA) levels, and membrane leakage, these aspects were studied in three woody species with contrasting ecological requirements. Physiological comparisons were made, during a 14-day drought-recovery cycle, on a drought resistant species, jack pine ( Pinus banksiana Lamb.), and two more drought susceptible species, black spruce ( Picea mariana (Mill) B.S.P.) and flooded gum ( Eucalyptus grandis W. Hill ex Maiden). As the xylem pressure potentials (Ψ), declined under drought, both foliar ABA and electrolyte leakage increased significantly. However, ABA increased prior to the increase in leakage, and there was a significant linear correlation between endogenous ABA and leakage in all 3 species. Addition of exogenous ABA to the bathing solutions also significantly increased leakage of both unstressed and (sorbitol) osmotically-stressed leaf segments in response to increasing (log) concentrations of (±) cis-trans ABA [0–10.0 μ M ]. Electrolyte leakage in black spruce and flooded gum was more sensitive to stress-induced ABA than in jack pine. The results suggest that drought increases foliar ABA which initiates membrane leakage, and that sensitivity of membranes to ABA accumulation varies, depending on the ecological requirements of a species.  相似文献

ABSTRACT Herbicides, commonly used for vegetation management in intensively managed pine (Pinus spp.) forests of the southeastern United States, with and without fire, may alter availability of quality forage for white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus; deer), an economically and socially important game species in North America. Because greater forage quality yields greater deer growth and productivity and intensively managed pine forests are common in the southeastern United States, forest managers would benefit from an understanding of fire and herbicide effects on forage availability to improve habitat conditions for deer. Therefore, we evaluated independent and combined effects of fire and herbicide (i.e., imazapyr) on forage biomass and deer nutritional carrying capacity (CC) on land owned and managed by Weyerhaeuser NR Company in east-central Mississippi, USA. We used a randomized complete block design of 6 pine plantations (blocks) divided into 4 10-ha treatment plots to each of which we randomly assigned a treatment (burn-only, herbicide-only, burn + herbicide, and control). We estimated biomass (kg/ha) of moderate- and high-use deer forage plants during July of 1999–2008, then estimated CC for diets to support either body maintenance (6% crude protein) or lactation (14% crude protein) with a nutritional constraints model. Herbaceous forages responded positively to fire and herbicide application. In most years, CC estimates for maintenance and lactation were greater in burn + herbicide than in controls. Maintenance-level CC was always greater in burn + herbicide than in controls, except at 1 year posttreatment. Burn + herbicide was 2.6–8.3 times greater ( = 4.0) than control for lactation-level CC in 8 of 9 years posttreatment. We recommend fire and selective herbicides to increase high-quality deer forage in mid-rotation, intensively managed pine plantations.  相似文献

对小兴安岭阔叶红松混交林林隙基本特征进行了研究。结果表明:林隙的线状密度为31.78个/km,冠空隙和扩展林隙所占的面积比例分别为15.71%和30.78%;冠空隙的年干扰频率为0.46%,干扰轮回期约为434.8a。冠空隙的大小变化在42.12—372.52m2之间,平均为153.37m2;扩展林隙的大小变化在98.65m2—633.10m2之间,平均为300.44m2。冠空隙和扩展林隙面积分布格局均符合Weibull分布。林隙形成方式主要为干基折断,占总形成木总数的35.29%,其次为掘根风倒,占28.43%。平均每个林隙的形成木为4.98株,由红松、白桦、枫桦、冷杉形成,径级在20—30 cm之间,高度在15—30 m之间。冠空隙的直径与高度比值的相对频率的分布呈单峰型曲线,当比值为0.30—0.45时,出现峰值;而扩展林隙的直径与高度比值的相对频率的分布呈双峰型曲线,当比值分别为0.75—0.90和1.05—1.15时,出现峰值。林隙边缘木胸径级的多度分布和高度级多度分布符合Weibull分布,但不符合正态分布。约13.41%的边缘木未出现偏冠现象,偏冠率在0.5—0.7之间的边缘木占70.49%。  相似文献

Hydraulic resistance to water flow was measured in branches and stems of Scots pine trees ranging from 7 to 59 years of age in Thetford (East Anglia, UK). On the basis of these measurements, tree above-ground conductance was calculated and related to the amount of leaf area sustained by each tree. Branches at the crown bottom had a lower proportion of sapwood area and a lower total hydraulic conductance than branches of the same diameter at the tree top. Within branches, most of the hydraulic resistance was located near the needles. Tree above-ground conductance was positively related to tree diameter and inversely related to tree height. Compared with young trees, mature trees had about 4 times less above-ground conductance per unit of leaf area. Apparently, the increase in pathway length associated with tree height growth could be only partially compensated for by the increase in conductive capacities resulting from diameter growth. We argue that this reduction may account for reported decreases of stomatal conductance with tree age. It is suggested that the increase in branchiness associated with tree maturation may represent a compensation mechanism to reduce the overall resistance to water flow in the crowns.  相似文献

Tree stems are an overlooked source of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Their contribution to ecosystem processes and total VOC fluxes is not well studied, and assessing it requires better understanding of stem emission dynamics and their driving processes. To gain more mechanistic insight into stem emission patterns, we measured monoterpene, methanol and acetaldehyde emissions from the stems of mature Scots pines (Pinus sylvestris L.) in a boreal forest over three summers. We analysed the effects of temperature, soil water content, tree water status, transpiration and growth on the VOC emissions and used generalized linear models to test their relative importance in explaining the emissions. We show that Scots pine stems are considerable sources of monoterpenes, methanol and acetaldehyde, and their emissions are strongly regulated by temperature. However, even small changes in water availability affected the emission potentials: increased soil water content increased the monoterpene emissions within a day, whereas acetaldehyde and methanol emissions responded within 2–4 days. This lag corresponded to their transport time in the xylem sap from the roots to the stem. Moreover, the emissions of monoterpenes, methanol and acetaldehyde were influenced by the cambial growth rate of the stem with 6–10-day lags.  相似文献

Three previous reports of microgeographical variation of glycerate dehydrogenase (Gly) frequencies in piñon, Pinus edulis, established the hypothesis that Gly frequencies contribute to adaptation to heterogeneous environments, specifically to variation in soil moisture. In each of these studies, the frequency of the Gly‐3 allele or of Gly‐33 homozygotes was higher on dry sites than on nearby moist sites. Here we attempt to extend these observations by testing the hypothesis that Gly frequencies respond to soil moisture variation on a range‐wide scale. Gly frequencies were surveyed in 11 natural populations, and the frequency of the Gly‐3 allele varied from 0.27 to 0.65 among the sample sites. Elevation varied from 1650 to 3100 m, and summer precipitation, defined as precipitation from April to August, varied from 13.7 to 26.4 cm. The soil types at the collection sites were schist, quaternary volcanic or a mixture of shale and sandstone. Logistic regression revealed that Gly frequencies did not respond to either elevation or soil type, but were related to summer precipitation (P < 0.01). The correlation between summer precipitation and the frequency of the Gly‐3 allele was r = ?0.92 (P < 0.001). Thus, the patterns of differentiation on microgeographical scales are consistent with greater differentiation on a range‐wide scale.  相似文献

Restoration of ponderosa pine ecosystems results in altered stand structure, potentially affecting microclimatic conditions and habitat quality for forest organisms. This research focuses on microclimatic changes resulting from forest and landscape structural alterations caused by restoration treatments in southwestern ponderosa pine forests. Three microclimate variables—light intensity, air temperature, and vapor pressure deficit (VPD)—were monitored over two field seasons. Differences in microclimate between the treated forest and the surrounding untreated forest were measured, and microclimatic gradients across the structural edge between these two forest types were quantified. Restoration treatments increased sunlight penetration to the forest floor but did not significantly impact ambient air temperature or VPD. Mean values for air temperature and VPD did not differ significantly between treatments, although temperature and vapor pressure deficit did exhibit a trend in the morning; both variables were higher at the structural edge and in the treated forest during morning hours. Significant edge gradients were detected for air temperature and VPD in the morning and evening, increasing from the structural edge into the untreated forest. Our results show that microclimatic effects of these restoration treatments are generally modest, but the changes are more prominent at specific locations and during certain times of day. Because even modest changes in microclimate have the potential to impact a range of key ecological processes, microclimatic effects should be considered when forest restoration treatments at the landscape scale are being planned and implemented.  相似文献

1 The mountain pine beetle Dendroctonus ponderosae is a major tree‐killing bark beetle in North America. We evaluated how the subsequent arrival of a competing bark beetle Ips pini influences the arrival of predators and their impact on both species. 2 The predators Temnochila chlorodia and Enoclerus sphegeus were strongly attracted to pheromones of D. ponderosae. By contrast, Enoclerus lecontei was mostly attracted to I. pini pheromones. The host compound myrcene synergized attraction of both D. ponderosae and E. sphegeus to the pheromone of D. ponderosae. However, it inhibited attraction of both I. pini and E. lecontei to I. pini’s pheromone. 3 Dendroctonus ponderosae were more attracted to trees than logs treated with its pheromones, whereas I. pini were more attracted to logs than trees treated with its pheromones. Some 78% of T. chlorodia were captured at hosts baited with D. ponderosae pheromones, whereas 83% of E. lecontei were captured at hosts baited with I. pini pheromones. We characterized the sequence of arrival to live trees baited with pheromones of D. ponderosae as: D. ponderosae, T. chlorodia, E. sphegeus, I. pini, E. lecontei. 4 Various combinations of I. pini and predators were added to logs colonized by D. ponderosae in the above sequence of arrival observed in live trees baited with D. ponderosae aggregation pheromones. Ips pini reduced D. ponderosae adult brood production. However, the combination of I. pini and E. lecontei did not raise D. ponderosae brood production above that observed with only I. pini present. Similarly, the combination of I. pini and T. chlorodia did not reduce D. ponderosae brood production below that observed with I. pini alone. By contrast, the combination of I. pini, T. chlorodia and E. lecontei caused more brood loss to D. ponderosae than I. pini alone. 5 Enoclerus lecontei did not reduce brood production by T. chlorodia, whereas T. chlorodia substantially reduced brood production by E. lecontei. 6 Secondary bark beetles that exploit the resource created by primary tree‐killing species exert negative effects through both competition and increased predator load. Implications to the population dynamics, ecology and evolution of tree‐killing bark beetles are discussed.  相似文献

Abstract

The two typical Mediterranean pines of Greece (Pinus halepensis Mill. and P. brutia Ten.) show a distinct, natural geographical distribution. However, in sites where they grow in sympatry (mainly due to extended reforestations), their morphological discrimination is not always easy. In the present study, three new morphometric indicators are introduced (at decreasing rank of reliability): (a) seed coat mass fraction, expressed as a percentage of the total seed mass (SM) (overall mean values 27.9 ± 0.5 (n = 160), and 58.0 ± 0.3 (n = 320) from 18 and 16 populations of Aleppo and East Mediterranean pine, respectively), (b) mean SM (16.70 ± 0.26 mg, n = 651, and 42.79 ± 0.61 mg, n = 425 from 18 and 16 populations of each of the two species, respectively) and (c) cone length/width ratio (2.20 ± 0.01, n = 651, and 1.77 ± 0.01, n = 606 from the same 18 and 16 populations, respectively). These three parameters are easily calculated, and constitute a reliable tool for the discrimination of the two pine species on the basis of their reproductive units (cones and seeds), provided that a minimal number of randomly collected samples is used for each indicator: 20 seeds for the measurement of seed coat mass fraction, about 1000 seeds for the estimation of mean SM, and 20 cones for the calculation of the cone length/width ratio. The functional implications of these adaptive traits are discussed.  相似文献
