Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and nitrogen (DON) are important energy and nutrient sources for aquatic ecosystems. In many northern temperate, freshwater systems DOC has increased in the past 50 years. Less is known about how changes in DOC may vary across latitudes, and whether changes in DON track those of DOC. Here, we present long-term DOC and DON data from 74 streams distributed across seven sites in biomes ranging from the tropics to northern boreal forests with varying histories of atmospheric acid deposition. For each stream, we examined the temporal trends of DOC and DON concentrations and DOC:DON molar ratios. While some sites displayed consistent positive or negative trends in stream DOC and DON concentrations, changes in direction or magnitude were inconsistent at regional or local scales. DON trends did not always track those of DOC, though DOC:DON ratios increased over time for ~30% of streams. Our results indicate that the dissolved organic matter (DOM) pool is experiencing fundamental changes due to the recovery from atmospheric acid deposition. Changes in DOC:DON stoichiometry point to a shifting energy-nutrient balance in many aquatic ecosystems. Sustained changes in the character of DOM can have major implications for stream metabolism, biogeochemical processes, food webs, and drinking water quality (including disinfection by-products). Understanding regional and global variation in DOC and DON concentrations is important for developing realistic models and watershed management protocols to effectively target mitigation efforts aimed at bringing DOM flux and nutrient enrichment under control.  相似文献

Through the analysis of the ESR spectra of spin labels, we investigated the thermotropic properties of dioctadecyl dimethylammonium bromide (DODAB) liposomes, in low and high ionic strength, with different cholesterol contents. The cationic lipid gel phase is stabilized by the presence of ions, the bilayer having a higher gel/fluid transition temperature (Tm) in high ionic strength. As found for low ionic strength [Benatti, C.R., Feitosa, E., Fernandez, R.M., Lamy-Freund, M.T., 2001. Structural and thermal characterization of dioctadecyldimethylammonium bromide dispersions by spin labels. Chem. Phys. Lipids, 111, 93-104], high salt DODAB membranes also present a clear coexistence of the two phases around Tm. Cholesterol solubility in DODAB bilayers seems to be rather low, as the coexistence of DODAB and cholesterol-rich domains can be clearly detected by spin labels, for cholesterol concentration as low as 15 mol% of the total lipid. For lower cholesterol concentrations, the effect of cholesterol in DODAB bilayers is similar to that in phospholipids. For concentrations at or above 45 mol% of cholesterol, spin labels do not detect the coexistence of structurally different domains.  相似文献

An anatomically accurate 3-dimensional numerical model of the right rat nasal cavity was developed and used to compute low, medium, and high flow rate inspiratory and expiratory mucosal odorant uptake (imposed patterning) for 3 odorants with different mucus solubilities. The computed surface mass flux distributions were compared with anatomic receptor gene expression zones identified in the literature. In general, simulations predicted that odorants that were highly soluble in mucus were absorbed dorsally and medially, corresponding roughly to receptors from one of the gene expression zones. Insoluble odorants tended to be absorbed more peripherally in the rat olfactory region corresponding to the other 2 zones. These findings also agreed in general with the electroolfactogram measurements and the voltage-sensitive dye measurements reported in the literature. This numerical approach is the first to predict detailed odorant flux information across the olfactory mucosa in the rat nasal cavity during inspiratory and expiratory flow and to relate it to anatomic olfactory receptor location, physiological function, and biochemical experiment. This numerical technique can allow us to separate the contributions of imposed and inherent patterning mechanisms on the rat olfactory mucosa.  相似文献

Learning processes in Drosophila have been studied through the use of Pavlovian associative memory tests, and these paradigms have been extremely useful in identifying both genetic factors and neuroanatomical structures that are essential to memory formation. Whether these same genes and brain compartments also contribute to memory formed from nonassociative experiences is not well understood. Exposures to environmental stressors such as predators are known to induce innate behavioral responses and can lead to new memory formation that allows a predator response to persist for days after the predator threat has been removed. Here, we utilize a unique form of nonassociative behavior in Drosophila where female flies detect the presence of endoparasitoid predatory wasps and alter their oviposition behavior to lay eggs in food containing high levels of alcohol. The predator-induced change in fly oviposition preference is maintained for days after wasps are removed, and this persistence in behavior requires a minimum continuous exposure time of 14 hr. Maintenance of this behavior is dependent on multiple long-term memory genes, including orb2, dunce, rutabaga, amnesiac, and Fmr1. Maintenance of the behavior also requires intact synaptic transmission of the mushroom body. Surprisingly, synaptic output from the mushroom body (MB) or the functions of any of these learning and memory genes are not required for the change in behavior when female flies are in constant contact with wasps. This suggests that perception of this predator that leads to an acute change in oviposition behavior is not dependent on the MB or dependent on learning and memory gene functions. Because wasp-induced oviposition behavior can last for days and its maintenance requires a functional MB and the wild-type products of several known learning and memory genes, we suggest that this constitutes a paradigm for a bona fide form of nonassociative long-term memory that is not dependent on associated experiences.  相似文献

Acridine orange (AO), dinitrobenzoic acid (DNB), bromocresol green (BCG), bromophenol blue (BPB), and methylene blue (MB) were chosen as model aromatic compounds of different polarity, charge, and solubility in water to examine the effects of solute properties on hydrophobic adsorption. These compounds show strict structural similarities to some herbicides and other potential xenobiotic pollutants and exhibit distinct absorption maxima in the visible region, which allows for their easy determination. A well-decomposed peat (medisaprist) at four different stages of drying was used to determine compound adsorption/desorption influences based on the degree of hydrophobicity and charge density of an organic surface. Adsorption and desorption isotherms were investigated using the batch equilibration method and determining the concentration of free chemicals by UV-Vis spectrophotometry. AO had a high tendency of adsorption and was strongly sorbed on peat samples that had been air-dried for 12 months. The lower Freundlich coefficient values found for MB when compared with AO at all the drying stages of the peat indicated that electrostatic attraction has a secondary contribution to sorption. On the contrary, the higher energy that must be spent to break solute-solvent interactions in the case of charged or polar molecules is one of the main factors in determining the position of the equilibrium. For a given solute, Kf values varied with the degree of hydrophobicity and the charge density of the surface, but again solute-solvent interactions appear to be much more important in the overall energy balance of hydrophobic pollutants than the electrostatic sorbate-sorbent interactions. A change in the solution pH does not improve the adsorption of the relatively polar DNB molecule, but sorption increases strongly for BCG and BPB when these molecules are in non-dissociated forms. The larger increase in BPB sorption observed on H+ saturated peat suggests that the degree of interaction increases with the suppression of the negative charge, but charge repulsion has a small effect in preventing adsorption of molecules bearing hydrophobic groups such as BCG. Desorption results differed depending on the chemical structure of the compound examined. For example, with AO there was no desorption from the more hydrophobic peat surfaces. A negative hysteresis was observed for DNB; the magnitude of hysteresis, evaluated using the ratio of Freundlich coefficients for adsorption and desorption, increased with the drying stage of the sorbent and was larger on oven-dried samples.  相似文献

Global climate change is predicted to alter growing season rainfall patterns, potentially reducing total amounts of growing season precipitation and redistributing rainfall into fewer but larger individual events. Such changes may affect numerous soil, plant, and ecosystem properties in grasslands and ultimately impact their productivity and biological diversity. Rainout shelters are useful tools for experimental manipulations of rainfall patterns, and permanent fixed-location shelters were established in 1997 to conduct the Rainfall Manipulation Plot study in a mesic tallgrass prairie ecosystem in northeastern Kansas. Twelve 9 x 14–m fixed-location rainfall manipulation shelters were constructed to impose factorial combinations of 30% reduced rainfall quantity and 50% greater interrainfall dry periods on 6 x 6–m plots, to examine how altered rainfall regimes may affect plant species composition, nutrient cycling, and above- and belowground plant growth dynamics. The shelters provided complete control of growing season rainfall patterns, whereas effects on photosynthetic photon flux density, nighttime net radiation, and soil temperature generally were comparable to other similar shelter designs. Soil and plant responses to the first growing season of rainfall manipulations (1998) suggested that the interval between rainfall events may be a primary driver in grassland ecosystem responses to altered rainfall patterns. Aboveground net primary productivity, soil CO2 flux, and flowering duration were reduced by the increased interrainfall intervals and were mostly unaffected by reduced rainfall quantity. The timing of rainfall events and resulting temporal patterns of soil moisture relative to critical times for microbial activity, biomass accumulation, plant life histories, and other ecological properties may regulate longer-term responses to altered rainfall patterns.  相似文献

The population of silvereyes Zosterops lateralis chlorocephalus , on Heron Island, Great Barrier Reef has been monitored accurately since 1965. Between 1979 and 1993, the breeding success of all birds was determined by monitoring nests. The population fluctuated between 225 and 483 individuals. Four cyclones led to substantial mortality. As this data set is long-term, has little observation error, and is from an effectively closed population, it provides an unusual opportunity to examine density dependence in reproduction or mortality. Using a stochastic logistic model, we found clear evidence of density dependence in adult population size. Logistic regression suggested that fledgling survival decreased with the numbers of birds attempting to breed. There was also some suggestion that adult survival might be density dependent. The fitted stochastic logistic model predicts negligible risks of extinction for this population, in contrast to the predictions of a published population viability analysis. Whilst our statistical model including density dependence may provide better predictions of the "usual" behaviour of a population than a population viability analysis, we suggest that caution should be exercised when statistically fitted models are used to predict the behaviour of the population at extremes, such as near extinction.  相似文献
