In the Mouhoun River basin, Burkina Faso, the main vectors of African animal trypanosomoses are Glossina palpalis gambiensis Vanderplank and Glossina tachinoides Westwood (Diptera: Glossinidae), both of which are riverine tsetse species. The aim of our study was to understand the impact of landscape anthropogenic changes on the seasonal dynamics of vectors and associated trypanosomosis risk. Three sites were selected on the basis of the level of disturbance of tsetse habitats and predominant tsetse species: disturbed (Boromo, for G. tachinoides) and half-disturbed (Douroula for G. tachinoides and Kadomba for G. p. gambiensis). At each of these sites, seasonal variations in the apparent densities of tsetse and mechanical vectors and tsetse infection rates were monitored over 17 months. Tsetse densities differed significantly between sites and seasons. Of 5613 captured tsetse, 1897 were dissected; 34 of these were found to be infected with trypanosomes. The most frequent infection was Trypanosoma vivax (1.4%), followed by Trypanosoma congolense (0.3%) and Trypanosoma brucei (0.05%). The mean physiological age of 703 tsetse females was investigated to better characterize the transmission risk. Despite the environmental changes, it appeared that tsetse lived long enough to transmit trypanosomes, especially in half-disturbed landscapes. A total of 3021 other biting flies from 15 species (mainly Tabanidae and Stomoxyinae) were also caught: their densities also differed significantly among sites and seasons. Their relative importance regarding trypanosome transmission is discussed; the trypanosomosis risk in cattle was similar at all sites despite very low tsetse densities (but high mechanical vector densities) in one of them.  相似文献

DNA hairpins consist of two distinct structural domains: a double stranded stem and a single-stranded loop that connect the two strands of the stem. Previous studies of short DNA hairpins have revealed that loop and stem sequences can significantly affect the thermodynamic stability of short DNA hairpins. In this work we present the effect of hydrostatic pressure on the helix-coil transition temperature (TM) for 11 16-base, hairpin-forming DNA oligonucleotides. All of the samples form a hairpin with a 6-base pair stem and a four-base loop. In addition, the four base pairs at the end of the stem distal from the loop are the same for every molecule. We have varied loop sequence and identity of the two duplex base pairs adjacent to the loop. Using the change in UV absorption to monitor the conformational state of the oligonucleotide the hairpin-coil transition temperature of these molecules was studied as a function of sodium ion concentration and pressure. From these data we calculated the volume change accompanying the transition. Model-dependent (van't Hoff) transition parameters such as ΔHvH and transition volume (ΔV) were estimated from the analysis of conformational transitions. Experiments revealed that the ΔV for denaturation of these molecules range from − 2.35 to + 6.74 cm3 mol−1. The expansibility (ΔΔV/ΔT) and the pressure dependence of cation release are also presented. The difference in the volume change for this transition is related to the differences in the hydration of these molecules.  相似文献

DNA barcoding is becoming an increasingly popular means to identify species. The obscure discrimination in the genus Pterygiella calls into question the re-assessment of the criterion for species delimitation. We collected 20 individuals, representing all five described species of this genus in its distributional range. The aim was to use three proposed barcode DNA regions (rbcL, matK, and ITS) to diagnose Pterygiella species, and examine which barcode is more suitable for discerning the congeneric and related species. The results showed that the core barcodes matK and rbcL were comparatively less effective. However, the ITS region, especially ITS-1and ITS-2, successfully identified all species in the genus. Furthermore, the secondary structure of ITS-2 RNA, especially compensatory base changes, appears complementary to classical primary sequence analysis for DNA barcoding.  相似文献

Otolith morphology is an efficient tool for the discrimination of fish stocks, populations and species when comparative genetic data are not available. Currently, the relationship between environmental factors and otolith shape is poorly characterized for the European eel (Anguilla anguilla), a highly migratory catadromous species constituting a single, randomly mating stock. The present study analyses the differences in otolith morphology between three Mediterranean eel local stocks from different environmental contexts (i.e. two brackish lagoons and one river). The relationship between otolith shape and otolith size was studied by means of Elliptic Fourier analysis and multivariate statistics. Otolith profile was digitally acquired and Cartesian coordinates were extracted. Partial Least Square (PLS) analysis pointed to continuous allometric growth in size and shape in otoliths from all three sites. In the three environments, shape variations occurred during growth as indicated by the presence of a significant and positive relationship between otolith size and the first PLS latent vector (i.e. which bears most of the information regarding otolith outline). Differences between smaller and larger sized otoliths were investigated using PLS Discriminant Analysis (PLSDA) and cluster analysis. Results indicate that otolith shape is highly uniform at smaller than at larger sizes. These shape differences apparently overlap the initial differentiation of the small otolith outlines acquired by eels during the growing phase as elvers in the marine environment. Data were discussed considering that the physical and chemical habitat variability in brackish lagoons and river could underlie a marked change in otolith shape during the animals' growth.  相似文献

Morphometric studies are a fundamental tool in paleontology to answer taxonomic, functional and evolutionary questions. In particular, appropriate functional interpretation often requires consideration of ontogenetic changes in the structures studied. The woolly mammoth (Mammuthus primigenius) is one of the most representative large mammal species of the Eurasian Pleistocene. Available ontogenetic studies on woolly mammoth mandible have focused on the first ontogenetic stages of the mandible development up to 4-5 years and have suggested that the symphysial process is sexually dimorphic. In the present work, we studied ontogenetic changes and sexual dimorphism in 45 mandibles from subadult and adult stages (8-56 African Elephant Years). Our results show positive correlations among almost all the morphometric variables measured, as well as an increase of mandible size with age. This increase does not differ among the variables examined, although the highest values are related with the symphysis height and the opening of the horizontal branches, and the lower ones with the greatest length (dimension), which implies the increase in the relative mandible width and height throughout the individual life. Sexual dimorphism in the mandible is at best slight, and the symphysial process is not diagnostic for sexing purposes. In addition, differences in age were an important confounding factor to assess sexual dimorphism and should be considered in future uses of sexual dimorphism assessment techniques.  相似文献

Increasing acceptance of the idea that evolution can proceed rapidly has generated considerable interest in understanding the consequences of ongoing evolutionary change for populations, communities and ecosystems. The nascent field of 'eco-evolutionary dynamics' considers these interactions, including reciprocal feedbacks between evolution and ecology. Empirical support for eco-evolutionary dynamics has emerged from several model systems, and we here present some possibilities for diverse and strong effects in Pacific salmon (Oncorhynchus spp.). We specifically focus on the consequences that natural selection on body size can have for salmon population dynamics, community (bear-salmon) interactions and ecosystem process (fluxes of salmon biomass between habitats). For example, we find that shifts in body size because of selection can alter fluxes across habitats by up to 11% compared with ecological (that is, numerical) effects. More generally, we show that selection within a generation can have large effects on ecological dynamics and so should be included within a complete eco-evolutionary framework.  相似文献

There is growing evidence that migratory species are particularly vulnerable to rapid environmental changes arising from human activity. Species are expected to vary in their capacity to respond to these changes: long-distance migrants and those lacking variability in migratory traits are probably at considerable disadvantage. The few studies that have assessed the degree of plasticity in behaviour of marine animals suggest that fidelity to non-breeding destinations is usually high. In the present study, we evaluated individual flexibility in migration strategy of a highly pelagic seabird, the Cory's shearwater Calonectris diomedea. Geolocation data from 72 different migrations, including 14 birds that were tracked for more than one non-breeding season, showed a remarkable capacity to change winter destinations between years. Although some birds exhibited high site fidelity, others shifted from the South to North Atlantic, from the western to eastern South Atlantic, and from the Atlantic to Indian Ocean. Individuals also showed flexibility in stopover behaviour and migratory schedule. Although their K-selected life-history strategy has the disadvantage that the chances of microevolution are slight if circumstances alter rapidly, these results suggest that Cory's shearwaters may be in a better position than many other long-distance migrants to face the consequences of a changing environment.  相似文献

以农大3号、农大4号、农大5号3个欧李品种为材料,测定果实发育过程中各组分糖、酸及总糖、总酸的含量,以明确欧李果实糖酸积累的动态变化特性.结果显示:(1)3个欧李品种果实成熟期糖含量、酸含量及糖酸比存在明显差异,其中农大3号品种的总糖含量最高,总酸含量最低,糖酸比值最高.(2)成熟期3品种各糖组分中均以果糖含量较高,葡萄糖和蔗糖含量较低,山梨醇含量微量;酸组分中均以苹果酸为主,柠檬酸少量.(3)3个品种果糖、蔗糖、葡萄糖、山梨醇含量在整个果实发育期均呈持续增加态势,并以果糖积累为主;农大3号果糖含量在8周后增幅明显高于另2个品种,且一直保持到果实成熟;3个品种蔗糖含量的变化趋势相近,在前期和中期增加缓慢,接近成熟的2~3周则迅速增加并占整个发育期积累量的70%以上.(4)3个品种酸含量的变化趋势较为相似,苹果酸和柠檬酸在果实发育的前期和中期含量均较低,在果实发育后期迅速增加,但接近果实成熟时又大幅下降.研究表明,果糖与苹果酸的含量及其动态变化是影响欧李果实糖酸比、决定果实风味的主要因素.  相似文献

1. Around the year 2000, historically abundant populations of brown trout ( Salmo trutta ) and Atlantic salmon ( S. salar ) co-occurring in rivers flowing along the Cantabrian corridor of north-western Spain showed a dramatic decline to alarming levels. For one reason or another, fishing was not banned and fishing pressure continued to reduce the few survivors. Unexpectedly, the populations recovered 'naturally' in a very short time period to the extent that in 2004–06 numbers had attained population sizes comparable to those of the mid 1980s.
2. The population of brown trout in Rio Chaballos showed a boom-and-bust pattern concurrent with those observed across broader geographical scales. This study revisits a 22-year data set to explore the nature of the severe decline and rapid recovery of this population.
3. Recruitment was related to stream discharge in March that covers the emergence period and the earliest search stages for food. Coefficients of variation for discharge and recruitment increased over the years and were highly correlated with each other, demonstrating that increased temporal variability in recruitment is strongly linked to increased variability in stream discharge. In turn, recruitment appears to be the major determinant of year-class strength and hence, of population size.
4. A number of factors appeared to operate as resilience mechanisms, permitting the population to increase rapidly when environmental conditions are optimal. These include strong recruitment-discharge relationships, short life-span, small stocks of eggs or offspring required to fill the amount of space suitable for the youngest juveniles and a few females surviving to spawn for a second time.
5. Implications for fishery management and conservation are discussed in the context of the expectation that these populations will vary over the coming years within ranges similar to those in this study.  相似文献
