The analysis of animal tracking data provides important scientific understanding and discovery in ecology. Observations of animal trajectories using telemetry devices provide researchers with information about the way animals interact with their environment and each other. For many species, specific geographical features in the landscape can have a strong effect on behavior. Such features may correspond to a single point (eg, dens or kill sites), or to higher dimensional subspaces (eg, rivers or lakes). Features may be relatively static in time (eg, coastlines or home‐range centers), or may be dynamic (eg, sea ice extent or areas of high‐quality forage for herbivores). We introduce a novel model for animal movement that incorporates active selection for dynamic features in a landscape. Our approach is motivated by the study of polar bear (Ursus maritimus) movement. During the sea ice melt season, polar bears spend much of their time on sea ice above shallow, biologically productive water where they hunt seals. The changing distribution and characteristics of sea ice throughout the year mean that the location of valuable habitat is constantly shifting. We develop a model for the movement of polar bears that accounts for the effect of this important landscape feature. We introduce a two‐stage procedure for approximate Bayesian inference that allows us to analyze over 300 000 observed locations of 186 polar bears from 2012 to 2016. We use our model to estimate a spatial boundary of interest to wildlife managers that separates two subpopulations of polar bears from the Beaufort and Chukchi seas.  相似文献

Fire regimes are changing throughout the North American boreal forest in complex ways. Fire is also a major factor governing access to high‐quality forage such as terricholous lichens for barren‐ground caribou (Rangifer tarandus groenlandicus). Additionally, fire alters forest structure which can affect barren‐ground caribou's ability to navigate in a landscape. Here, we characterize how the size and severity of fires are changing across five barren‐ground caribou herd ranges in the Northwest Territories and Nunavut, Canada. Additionally, we demonstrate how time since fire, fire severity, and season result in complex changes in caribou behavioural metrics estimated using telemetry data. Fire disturbances were identified using novel gap‐free Landsat surface reflectance composites from 1985 to 2011 across all herd ranges. Burn severity was estimated using the differenced normalized burn ratio. Annual area burned and burn severity were assessed through time for each herd and related to two behavioural metrics: velocity and relative turning angle. Neither annual area burned nor burn severity displayed any temporal trend within the study period. However, certain herds, such as the Ahiak/Beverly, have more exposure to fire than other herds (i.e. Cape Bathurst had a maximum forested area burned of less than 4 km2). Time since fire and burn severity both significantly affected velocity and relative turning angles. During fall, winter, and spring, fire virtually eliminated foraging‐focused behaviour for all 26 years of analysis while more severe fires resulted in a marked increase in movement‐focused behaviour compared to unburnt patches. Between seasons, caribou used burned areas as early as 1‐year postfire, demonstrating complex, nonlinear reactions to time since fire, fire severity, and season. In all cases, increases in movement‐focused behaviour were detected postfire. We conclude that changes in caribou behaviour immediately postfire are primarily driven by changes in forest structure rather than changes in terricholous lichen availability.  相似文献

  1. A central theme for conservation is understanding how animals differentially use, and are affected by change in, the landscapes they inhabit. However, it has been challenging to develop conservation schemes for habitat‐specific behaviors.
  2. Here we use behavioral change point analysis to identify behavioral states of golden eagles (Aquila chrysaetos) in the Sonoran and Mojave Deserts of the southwestern United States, and we identify, for each behavioral state, conservation‐relevant habitat associations.
  3. We modeled behavior using 186,859 GPS points from 48 eagles and identified 2,851 distinct segments comprising four behavioral states. Altitude above ground level (AGL) best differentiated behavioral states, with two clusters of short‐distance movement behaviors characterized by low AGL (state 1 AGL = 14 m (median); state 2 AGL = 11 m) and two associated with longer‐distance movement behaviors and characterized by higher AGL (state 3 AGL = 108 m; state 4 AGL = 450 m).
  4. Behaviors such as perching and low‐altitude hunting were associated with short‐distance movements in updraft‐poor environments, at higher elevations, and over steeper and more north‐facing terrain. In contrast, medium‐distance movements such as hunting and transiting were over gentle and south‐facing slopes. Long‐distance transiting occurred over the desert habitats that generate the best updraft.
  5. This information can guide management of this species, and our approach provides a template for behavior‐specific habitat associations for other species of management concern.

动物细胞中,乙酰胆碱酯酶负责把乙酰胆碱水解为胆碱和乙酸以起到终止信号的作用。蚕豆(ViciafabaL.)保卫细胞原生质体表面具有特异的水解乙酰胆碱的酯酶,光可以激活该酶的活性。组织学定位的结果显示,酶反应产物主要分布于气孔保卫细胞内壁和腹壁的外侧及内壁和腹壁中,表明一种类似于动物突触传递的机制可能存在于气孔保卫细胞和周围细胞之间,即乙酰胆碱发挥作用后由乙酰胆碱酯酶分解以终止其作用;此外开放的气孔周围具有更高的酶活性,说明乙酰胆碱酯酶可通过水解气孔周围的乙酰胆碱而调控气孔运动  相似文献

Prolonged depolarization induces a slow inactivation process in some K+ channels. We have studied ionic and gating currents during long depolarizations in the mutant Shaker H4-Δ(6–46) K+ channel and in the nonconducting mutant (Shaker H4-Δ(6–46)-W434F). These channels lack the amino terminus that confers the fast (N-type) inactivation (Hoshi, T., W.N. Zagotta, and R.W. Aldrich. 1991. Neuron. 7:547–556). Channels were expressed in oocytes and currents were measured with the cut-open-oocyte and patch-clamp techniques. In both clones, the curves describing the voltage dependence of the charge movement were shifted toward more negative potentials when the holding potential was maintained at depolarized potentials. The evidences that this new voltage dependence of the charge movement in the depolarized condition is associated with the process of slow inactivation are the following: (a) the installation of both the slow inactivation of the ionic current and the inactivation of the charge in response to a sustained 1-min depolarization to 0 mV followed the same time course; and (b) the recovery from inactivation of both ionic and gating currents (induced by repolarizations to −90 mV after a 1-min inactivating pulse at 0 mV) also followed a similar time course. Although prolonged depolarizations induce inactivation of the majority of the channels, a small fraction remains non–slow inactivated. The voltage dependence of this fraction of channels remained unaltered, suggesting that their activation pathway was unmodified by prolonged depolarization. The data could be fitted to a sequential model for Shaker K+ channels (Bezanilla, F., E. Perozo, and E. Stefani. 1994. Biophys. J. 66:1011–1021), with the addition of a series of parallel nonconducting (inactivated) states that become populated during prolonged depolarization. The data suggest that prolonged depolarization modifies the conformation of the voltage sensor and that this change can be associated with the process of slow inactivation.  相似文献

For the prediction of the air and product temperatures, the product moisture, and the air humidity during a coating process in a Bohle Lab-Coater, a model was developed. The purpose of this work was to determine the limit moisture, the critical moisture, and the constant for the exchange rate between both zones and to use these values for other sets of experiments to test the model. The adaptation of the 3 parameters (limit moisture, critical moisture, and exchange rate constant), was done by calculation of the product temperature in both zones for several sets of parameters in order to minimize the sum of square deviation between the calculated and the measured product temperatures. This set of parameters was used to test the validity of the model. By applying the model, the product temperature could be predicted based on the product, process, and equipment-related parameters. Hence, the model can be used to theoretically investigate the influence of different process paramaters. The mean difference between the predicted, and measured product temperatures in the steady state is ≈2 up to 3 K using the determined parameter set for the limit moisture, the critical moisture, and the exchange rate constant. The model is useful for the prediction of the air and product temperatures, the product moisture, and air humidity during a coating process in the Bohle Lab-Coater using round, biconvex tablets.  相似文献

1. A number of planktonic cyanobacteria species form resting stages that survive in the sediments of lakes. The significance of this life history strategy to the ecology of new planktonic populations was investigated in Esthwaite Water, a mesotrophic lake in the English Lake District.
2. A simple trapping technique was used to quantify vertical movements of five species of buoyant gas-vacuolate cyanobacteria from close to the sediments, along a depth transect.
3. 'Recruitment' from the sediments was found to be widespread amongst the cyanobacteria species associated with the summer phytoplankton community.
4. Estimates of the vertical upward fluxes of cyanobacteria based upon trap catches could not account for observed increases in the planktonic populations suggesting that 'recruitment' was not a significant source of biomass.
5. Vertical upward movements of Anabaena solitaria were recorded prior to this species becoming established in the plankton suggesting that benthic populations might be a source of cells for initial pelagic growth of populations of this species.
6. Low numbers of vegetative filaments of Anabaena flos-aquae , Aphanizomenon flos-aquae and Oscillatoria agardhii were observed in the plankton through the winter. These small overwintering populations appeared to be the primary source of inocula for the large summer populations of these species.  相似文献

We have investigated the patterns of tissue flow underlying the formation of the primitive streak in the chick embryo. Analysis of time-lapse sequences of brightfield images to extract the tissue velocity field and of fluorescence images of small groups of DiI-labelled cells have shown that epiblast cells move in two large-scale counter-rotating streams, which merge at the site of streak formation. Despite the large-scale tissue flows, individual cells appear to move little relative to their neighbours. As the streak forms, it elongates in both the anterior and posterior directions. Inhibition of actin polymerisation via local application of the inhibitor latrunculin A immediately terminates anterior extension of the streak tip, but does not prevent posterior elongation. Inhibition of actin polymerisation at the base of the streak completely inhibits streak formation, implying that continuous movement of cells into the base of the forming streak is crucial for extension. Analysis of cycling cells in the early embryo shows that cell-cycle progression in the epiblast is quite uniform before the primitive streak forms then decreases in the central epiblast and incipient streak and increases at the boundary between the area pellucida and area opaca during elongation. The cell-cycle inhibitor aphidicolin, at concentrations that completely block cell-cycle progression, permits initial streak formation but arrests development during extension. Our analysis suggests that cell division maintains the cell-flow pattern that supplies the streak with cells from the lateral epiblast, which is critical for epiblast expansion in peripheral areas, but that division does not drive streak formation or the observed tissue flow.  相似文献
