Valve abundances of marine planktonic, marine benthic and freshwater diatoms in 780 sediment surface samples from the North and Equatorial Atlantic between 20° S 75° W and 70° N 10° E display patterns that do not correspond to published records of primary production in the photic zone. On the contrary, their abundance is more closely related to dissolution and dilution by terrigenous minerogenic and biogenic carbonate material. Highest abundances of marine planktonic diatoms occur in the northern North Atlantic south of Iceland and in the equatorial regions. The central North Atlantic and the central Caribbean, which feature lower primary production in the photic zone, contain few or no diatoms in surface sediments. African derived freshwater diatoms are concentrated in a lobe between 5° S and 20° N latitude decreasing in numbers from the African continent westward.Lars Gronlien died unexpectedly in January 1992.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to assess the value of phantom midge Chaoborus (Diptera: Chaoboridae) larvae as a palaeoenvironmental proxy in northern Europe. The presence of Chaoborus was examined in 80 small shallow lakes across Finland (60–70°N), based on their subfossil mandibles preserved in lake sediments. Chaoborus flavicans was present in 33 lakes, but was the most abundant midge taxon in only one of the lakes. Chaoborus crystallinus/obscurripes mandibles were present in two lakes. Statistical analyses showed that the distribution of Chaoborus was significantly correlated with lake depth and mean July air temperature. Chaoborus was absent in the northern study lakes, whereas the results indicated that C. flavicans was frequently found in small shallow lakes in southern Finland. Chaoborus flavicans was particularly abundant in fish-free, macrophyte-rich, dystrophic lakes, but absent in oligotrophic clear-water lakes having fish. The results of this study indicate that the subfossil mandibles of Chaoborus can provide valuable information in multiproxy palaeolimnological studies, especially when investigating past changes in water level and temperature in small shallow lakes in northern Europe. Although catchments have been implicated as an important source of metals to lakes, the catchment contribution of different metals is poorly known, and the anthropogenic contribution is not known at all. We determine the anthropogenic lake sediment burdens of Zn, Cu, Ni, Cr, and Pb for several Quebec and Ontario lakes, not subject to point source loading, to obtain estimates of atmospheric loading and inputs from terrestrial sources. To do this, we first collected multiple cores across 11 lake basins to estimate the whole-lake Pb burdens. As the whole-lake Pb burdens did not differ among lakes that spanned over two orders of magnitude in drainage ratios (drainage basin area/lake area), we conclude that catchment retention of anthropogenic Pb is complete. The anthropogenic Pb burdens were then used as a correction for focusing for the other metals. Among the metals, Cr and Ni were the most readily exported from drainage basins, followed by Cu. Zn showed no increase with drainage ratio, indicating Zn to be effectively retained by catchments. The export coefficients of the Pb corrected metals correlate well with ocean residence time, revealing a similar metal sorption/precipitation sequence in both soils and oceans. Sediment metal burdens provide a relatively easy way to obtain not only metal export coefficients from drainage basins, but also the atmospheric deposition of anthropogenic metals (e.g. Pb: S.E. Quebec, 950 mg*m–2: Laurentians, north of Montreal, 420 mg*m–2). The export coefficients are not only simpler to obtain than by mass balance measurements, but, in addition, identify the anthropogenic component.  相似文献

Sediment chemistry of productive and non-productive wild rice sites was measured over 3 consecutive growing seasons Although productive sites differed from non-productive sites in terms of pH, N and potential N mineralization, redox potential was considered to be the major factor which distinguished these site classes. Productivity of wild rice in commercial stands could not be consistently correlated to sediment nutrients. However, growth appeared to be restricted in strongly reduced sediments and sediment Eh is considered to be a rapid, accurate method of estimating site potential. Good growth is expected if Eh is above –150 mB while poor growth is expected when Eh drops below –200 mV. Eh values of sediment samples changed as storage time increased. It is therefore recommended that Eh is recorded on-site.  相似文献

  1. Tracking the movement of organisms is a fundamental goal of many ecological studies. Several techniques exist in the study of terrestrial and aquatic fauna; however, to date, the ability to monitor aquatic fauna within the sediment layer efficiently and in multiple dimensions is lacking. Given the importance of subsurface sediments in supporting ecosystem functioning, this inability to observe organism behaviour represents a fundamental gap in our knowledge and limits our capability to holistically characterise the response of freshwater systems to stressors.
  2. Here we present an experimental study that employs novel transparent super absorbent polymer substrates (c. 8–12 mm in diameter) in combination with computer vision technology, which enables, for the first time, real-time observation and tracking of organisms within the sediment layer under lotic flow conditions. Use of these substrates allowed the successful extraction of organism trajectories, which enabled the velocity and body orientation of a freshwater amphipod (Gammarus fossarum) in the sediment layer to be calculated in response to a number of vertical hydrological exchange treatments (upwelling, downwelling, and no vertical exchange).
  3. Results indicate that under vertical hydrological exchange, a higher proportion of fast velocities (both horizontal and vertical) were recorded for G. fossarum in the sediment layer compared to no vertical exchange (control) conditions. This increase was most marked for upwelling flow exchange. We also observed a change in the body orientation of individuals in the sediment layer from a vertical alignment under no vertical exchange to a more horizontal one under downwelling and more notably upwelling flow exchange. This shift in body position was exacerbated under stronger vertical exchange rates.
  4. We identified that following the flow transition of downwelling to upwelling conditions, there was an immediate shift (0–2 min) in both the orientation angle and activity level of individuals. This increased rate of activity was maintained for the individuals' velocity but not for their changing orientation angle. These trends were not apparent within the flow transition of no vertical exchange to downwelling flow.
  5. Our new methodological approach enables vital insights into the behaviour of organisms within the sediment layer. Use of super absorbent polymer substrates allows real-time multi-directional tracking of multiple organisms in parallel. We believe the method represents an innovative tool that can be employed to tackle a wide range of ecological questions and thereby improve our mechanistic understanding of ecological responses to biotic and abiotic processes/stressors.

A geographical study of the littoral sponges from the Straits of Gibraltar was undertaken, where the origin of these sponges is observed to be a transition between the different geographic regions that meet in the Straits. A great affinity was also observed between the Mauretanian fauna, the fauna from the Straits of Gibraltar and that from the entire Spanish Peninsular Mediterranean, thus conforming a very homogeneous block within the group of areas studied. On the other hand, a numerous group of species traditionally considered endemic to the Mediterranean, such as: Haliclona mucosa , H. valliculata , H. cratera , H. fulva , H. aqueductus . H. mediterranea , Dendroxea lenis , Phorbas tenacior , Hexadella racovitzai , Ircinia oros , Dictyonella incisa , Acanthella acuta , Diplastrella bistellata , etc. are believed to have an origin in tropical or subtropical Alantic waters.  相似文献

Interest in climate change research has taken on new relevance with the realization that human activities, such as the accelerated release of the so‐called greenhouse gases, may be altering the thermal properties of our atmosphere. Important social, economic, and scientific questions include the following. Is climate changing? If so, can these changes be related to human activities? Are episodes of extreme weather, such as droughts or hurricanes, increasing in frequency? Long‐term meteorological data, on broad spatial and temporal scales, are needed to answer these questions. Unfortunately, such data were never gathered; therefore, indirect proxy methods must be used to infer past climatic trends. A relatively untapped source of paleoclimate data is based on hindcasting past climatic trends using the environmental optima and tolerances of algae (especially diatoms) preserved in lake sediment profiles. Paleophycologists have used two approaches. Although still controversial, attempts have been made to directly infer climatic variables, such as temperature, from past algal assemblages. The main assumption with these types of analyses is that species composition is either directly related to temperature or that algal assemblages are related to some variable linearly related to temperature. The second more commonly used approach is to infer a limnological variable (e.g. water chemistry, lake ice cover, etc.) that is related to climate. Although paleolimnological approaches are broadly similar across climatic regions, the environmental gradients that paleophycologists track can be very different. For example, climatic inferences in polar regions have focused on past lake ice conditions, whereas in lakes near arctic treeline ecotones, paleophycologists have developed methods to infer past lakewater‐dissolved organic carbon, because this variable has been linked to the density of coniferous trees in a drainage basin. In closed‐basin lakes in arid and semiarid regions, past lakewater salinity, which can be robustly reconstructed from fossil algal assemblages, is closely tied to the balance of evaporation and precipitation (i.e. drought frequency). Some recent examples of paleophycolgical work include the documentation of striking environmental changes in high arctic environments in the 19th century believed to be related to climate warming. Meanwhile, diatom‐based reconstructions of salinity (e.g. the Great Plains of North America and Africa) have revealed prolonged periods of droughts over the last few millennia that have greatly exceeded those recorded during recent times. Marked climatic variability that is outside the range captured by the instrumental record has a strong bearing on sustainability of human societies. Only with a long‐term perspective can we understand natural climatic variability and the potential influences of human activities on climate and thereby increase our ability to understand future climate.  相似文献

A four-year research program has been carried out to the aim of evaluating the effectiveness of Cr and Ni removal from secondary effluent. Tests were performed in small-scale (10 l/h) and full-scale (150 m3/d) sub-surface flow (SSF) constructed wetlands (cws). Metals removal was also assessed as a function of increased clogging conditions that occur in the cws. Cr and Ni content were evaluated in sediments at various points and in plant tissues by sampling phragmites australis roots, stems, and leaves. Clogging was evaluated by measuring hydraulic conductivity at the same sampling points at the beginning and at the end of the experiment. Residence Time Distribution – RTD - curves were also assessed at the beginning and after 48 months by using lithium chloride as tracer. Plotted results showed an increased skewness in the RTD curves at the end of the experiment. Proportionality between increasing clogging conditions and sediment adsorption was observed, especially for nickel that was absorbed mainly in the roots.  相似文献

Intra- and interspecific effects together with changing environmental conditions regulate the dynamics of the fragile bleak populations in Lake Balaton. Size- and age-structures, length-weight relationships and mortality were studied on 1493 individuals and growth history were determined using scales from 703 specimens. The population growth rate was slow and the basic population parameters showed area variations along the longitudinal axis of the lake. Gut contents were analyzed in 224 individuals. The bleak stocks are trophically strongly related to the littoral zooplankton and benthos; and they play a significant energy-mediating role in the food-webs between the periphytic communities and fish assemblages in the littoral zone of Lake Balaton.  相似文献
