Dryocosmus kuriphilus Yasumatsu (Hymenoptera: Cynipidae), is one of the most serious pests attacking chestnut trees. Recently it was incidentally introduced into Northwest Italy and it is now spreading throughout Europe. This pest was successfully controlled in Japan by introducing a parasitoid, Torymus sinensis Kamijo (Hymenoptera: Torymidae), from China’s mainland. Following this successful experience, the parasitoid was introduced into Italy from Japan. One year of preliminary studies led to a successful method of rearing imported galls with a synchronization between the parasitoid’s emergence and the presence of the target galls in the field. In two consecutive years, a total of 2,117 individuals were released in several sites covering most of the infested area. There are encouraging data about the settlement of the parasitoid and its synchrony with the host’s cycle: from about 64,000 host galls collected in the field over 200 T. sinensis were reared. The role of native parasitoids associated with the chestnut gall pest in its Italian distribution range is also discussed.  相似文献

A genetic variant of the entomopathogenic fungus Metarhizium anisopliae var. anisopliae, isolated from a soil in Alberta, Canada, from a location with a history of severe grasshopper infestations, was evaluated for pathogenicity in bioassays of living grasshoppers. Mortality in treated individuals drawn from a laboratory colony was 99% (LT50 = 6.7 days, LT90 = 9.6 days) at 12 days post-inoculation compared to 100% (LT50 = 4.1 days, LT90 = 5.8 days) mortality at 8 days in insects exposed to a commercial isolate of M. anisopliae var. acridum (IMI 330189). Experimental infection of field-collected grasshoppers under laboratory conditions with the native isolate of M. anisopliae var. anisopliae resulted in 100% (LT50 = 4.4 days, LT90 = 5.4 days) mortality attained within 7 days compared to 100% (LT50 = 4.7 days, LT90 = 6.3 days) mortality in 9 days in insects treated with M. anisopliae var. acridum. Amplification of fungal genomic DNA from the indigenous isolate with primers for the specific detection of M. anisopliae var. anisopliae produced a product almost 300 bp larger than expected based on previously known isolates. This is the first demonstration of a highly virulent, indigenous non-chemical control agent of grasshoppers in North America. GenBank Accession Nos. DQ342236, DQ342237.  相似文献

This paper reviews the current and potential methods to control the harlequin ladybird, Harmonia axyridis (Pallas) (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae), an Asian predatory beetle invasive in Europe and the Americas where it has become a human nuisance, a grape and wine pest and a threat to native biodiversity. Current methods to manage this invasive species include: techniques to mechanically prevent adult beetles from entering buildings in autumn or to remove aggregates of beetles inside buildings, e.g. using various trapping methods; the use of insecticides on buildings or in vineyards to prevent aggregation in houses or on grapes; cultivation practices in vineyards to lower the impact of the ladybird on grape production and wine quality; remedial treatments for wine tainted by the ladybird. Other methods are presently being developed or considered. Semiochemicals could be used as deterrents or as attractants to develop more efficient trapping systems in buildings and open fields. Natural enemies include pathogens, parasitoids, predators and a parasitic mite but few of them show potential as biological control agents. While management methods presently used or under development may eventually solve the problems caused by beetles aggregating in buildings or vineyards, the issue of H. axyridis populations outcompeting native species is much more challenging. Only the sudden adaptation of a native natural enemy or the importation of a natural enemy from the area of origin of the ladybird may ultimately lower population densities. The problems linked to the importation of an Asian natural enemy of H. axyridis are discussed.  相似文献

Few population genetics studies have been carried out on major locust species. In particular, an understanding of the population genetic structure of the Australian plague locust, Chortoicetes terminifera, is lacking. We isolated and characterized eight polymorphic microsatellite loci in C. terminifera, and described experimental conditions for polymerase chain reaction multiplexing and genotyping these loci. The number of alleles per locus ranged from 11 to 29 and the expected heterozygosity ranged from 0.797 to 0.977. One locus was found to be X-linked. Results of cross-taxon amplification tests are reported in four species of the Oedipodinae subfamily.  相似文献

The western flower thrips, Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande) (Thysanoptera: Thripidae), is a major pest in glasshouses, where light and photoperiod are often manipulated to grow crops. The effect of five photoperiods (L0:D24, L6:D18, L12:D12, L18:D6, and L24:D0) on the behaviour of adult females was investigated in the laboratory at 25 °C. The amount of walking, pollen consumption, and oviposition all increased with increasing photophase. The three behaviours occurred at a low rate in continuous darkness, and are therefore not exclusively diurnal. Three out of 16 thrips (19%) showed weakly rhythmic walking activity in continuous darkness, with an average circadian period of 25.3 ± 1.5 h. It is proposed that the length of the photophase determines the amount of nutrient intake, which in turn determines oviposition rate and thus affects population increase.  相似文献

This is the first report of the successful use of Pochonia chlamydosporia as a biological control agent against potato cyst nematodes (PCN) (Globodera pallida and G. rostochiensis) in potato crops grown under commercial field conditions and represents an important step in the development of biological control for PCN. Two field experiments were established in consecutive years (2006 and 2007) at different field sites in Shropshire, England. Treatments comprised of (1) untreated control, (2) P. chlamydosporia, (3) P. chlamydosporia with the nematicide fosthiazate and (4) fosthiazate alone. In both experiments, significant reductions in the nematode multiplication rate (Pf/Pi) for P. chlamydosporia treated plots were observed (48% and 51% control, respectively). The P. chlamydosporia treatment did not differ significantly from both fosthiazate treatments in terms of Pf/Pi in spite of the trend towards increased control particularly in Experiment 1. P. chlamydosporia therefore provided similar levels of nematode population control as fosthiazate. The combined treatment did not provide any additional reduction in Pf/Pi but demonstrated that P. chlamydosporia was compatible with fosthiazate. Over the different developmental stages of the juvenile nematodes, there was evidence of parasitism of adult females on the plant root by P. chlamydosporia. Root colonization by P. chlamydosporia was higher in the P. chlamydosporia treatment due to increased levels of nematodes in plant roots. Results from both experiments demonstrated the efficacy of P. chlamydosporia as a biological control agent of PCN and indicate its potential for use as part of an integrated pest management strategy.  相似文献

The effects of soil tillage on beneficial invertebrates within the vineyard   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
1 Tillage, commonly used in agroecosystems, can influence the abundance of invertebrates through factors such as habitat change and food availability.
2 The effects of tillage on the composition and abundance of invertebrates were examined in a vineyard near Mildura in Victoria, Australia, focusing particularly on groups that might act as natural enemies in vineyards. We used pitfall traps at ground level and sticky traps in the canopy.
3 The collections were first sorted to order. Beetles (Coleoptera) were sorted to family and ants (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) to genus.
4 Ants were the only group to be affected by tillage when all months were considered. The same genera occurred in both treatments but the abundance of several genera was reduced by tillage. Families of several beetles, including predators, increased in tilled areas. Spider, millipede, centipede and earwig numbers were decreased by tillage. In the canopy, Trichogrammatidae and other parasitoids decreased in abundance after tillage.
5 These results indicate that tillage influences the composition of invertebrates and has the potential to negatively affect the abundance of beneficial groups.  相似文献

We evaluated the compatibility of two entomopathogenic nematodes, Heterorhabditis bacteriophora HP88 and Steinernema carpocapsae All strain with selected pesticide formulations used in turfgrass in tank-mixes under laboratory conditions. The nematodes were exposed to the recommended rates of pesticides applied in either 100, 300, or 500 L/ha tank-mix volumes in 24-well plates at room temperature for 3 h and infective juveniles (IJ) viability determined, and then tested against Galleria mellonella larvae at 22-26°C for 96 h to assess IJ pathogenicity. We found that S. carpocapsae viability was not affected by any of the pesticides, while aluminum tris and trichlorfon significantly reduced S. carpocapsae pathogenicity at all concentrations. Thiamethoxam and trichlorfon significantly reduced H. bacteriophora viability, while halofenozide, aluminum tris, trichlorfon, and carbaryl significantly reduced H. bacteriophora pathogenicity. Imidacloprid, at the recommended rate 330-440 g AI/ha, significantly increased H. bacteriophora pathogenicity at 500 and 300 L/ha application volume. The integration of these nematode pesticide combinations in turf pest management programs is discussed.  相似文献

Highly polymorphic microsatellite markers can provide important demographic information on founder events and range expansion following initial introduction of invasive insect species. Six microsatellite loci were isolated from an enriched DNA library in order to study the invasion patterns of the western flower thrips, Frankliniella occidentalis. All loci tested were found to be polymorphic and successfully amplified in all individuals. The number of alleles per locus ranged from five to nine and heterozygosity ranged from 45 to 73%. Some of the loci were also successfully amplified in other thrips species.  相似文献

Six microsatellite loci were isolated from the bruchid Acanthoscelides obtectus Say (Coleoptera: Bruchidae). Each locus was polymorphic, with the number of alleles ranging from 3 to 18. We found high levels of within‐population variation at most loci, with heterozygosities ranging from 0 to 0.75. Cross‐species amplification of these loci was tested in two other species of the genus Acanthoscelides, A. obvelatus Bridwell and A. argillaceus Sharp.  相似文献
