We examined the effects of tail autotomy on survivorship and body growth of both adult and juvenile Uta stansburiana by directly manipulating tail condition. Tail loss decreased neither survivorship nor rate of body growth for individuals in two natural populations. Lack of an influence of tail loss on survivorship in these two populations may be the result of high mortality. Under high mortality any differential effects of tail loss will be lower than in populations facing lower mortality. Growth experiments in the laboratory demonstrated that, under conditions of minimal environmental variation and social interactions, there is no tradeoff between body growth and tail regeneration as has been suggested for other species of lizards. One possible reason for this difference is that U. stansburiana does not use the tail as a storage organ for lipids. The original and regenerated tails are composed mainly of protein. In general, any differential body growth between tailed and tailless individuals may be due to social interactions and not a diversion of limited energy into tail regeneration. 相似文献

During the mass settlement events of brachyuran crabs, there is a significant chance of density-dependent injury in the megalopae (last larval stage) because cannibalism can occur by larger conspecifics. Laboratory observations revealed that the appendages that are more prone to injury are eyestalks, as well as first (P1) and fifth (P5) pereiopods. The ability of Carcinus maenas megalopae to autotomize these structures and the effect of such injuries in their feeding ability and metamorphosis were investigated. All tested specimens were able to autotomize one or both of their P1 and P5, but not their eyestalks. Megalopae missing a single P1, as well as one or both P5, were able to capture and ingest prey, as well as intact specimens. Megalopae with either P1 and P5 appendages or at least one damaged eyestalk failed to ingest sufficient food to reach the nutritional threshold required to successfully metamorphose. 相似文献

Predicting fluid responsiveness, the response of stroke volume to fluid loading, is a relatively novel concept that aims to optimise circulation, and as such organ perfusion, while avoiding futile and potentially deleterious fluid administrations in critically ill patients. Dynamic parameters have shown to be superior in predicting the response to fluid loading compared with static cardiac filling pressures. However, in routine clinical practice the conditions necessary for dynamic parameters to predict fluid responsiveness are frequently not met. Passive leg raising as a means to alter biventricular preload in combination with subsequent measurement of the change in stroke volume can provide a fast and accurate way to guide fluid management in a broad population of critically ill patients. 相似文献

Chronic venous ulcer (CVU) is a major cause of chronic wounds of lower extremities and presents a significant financial and resource burden to health care systems worldwide. Defects in the vasculature, matrix deposition, and re-epithelialization are the main histopathological changes believed to impede healing. Supplementation of the amino acid arginine that plays a crucial role in the interactions that occur during inflammation and wound healing was proven clinically to improve acute wound healing probably through enhancing activity of inducible arginase (AI) locally in the wounds. However, the possible mechanism of arginine action and the potential beneficial effects of AI/arginine in human chronic wounds remain unclear. In the present study, using biopsies, taken under local anesthesia, from adult patients (n = 12, mean age 55 years old) with CVUs in lower extremities, we investigated the correlation between AI distribution in CVUs and the histopathological changes, mainly proliferative and vascular changes. Our results show a distinct spatial distribution of AI along the ulcer in the epidermis and in the dermis with the highest level of expression being at the ulcer edge and the least expression towards the ulcer base. The AI cellular immunoreactivity, enzymatic activity, and protein levels were significantly increased towards the ulcer edge. Interestingly, a similar pattern of expression was encountered in the proliferative and the vascular changes with strong correlations between AI and the proliferative activity and vascular changes. Furthermore, AI cellular distribution was associated with increased proliferative activity, inflammation, and vascular changes. Our findings of differential expression of AI along the CVU base, edge, and nearby surrounding skin and its associations with increased proliferative activity and vascular changes provide further support to the AI implication in CVU pathogenesis. The presence of high levels of AI in the epidermis of chronic wounds may serve as a molecular marker of impaired healing and may provide future targets for therapeutic intervention. 相似文献

Background aims
Preclinical and observational reports indicate that adipose tissue (AT) is a safe and promising tool to treat non-healing venous leg ulcers (VLUs).Methods
From an initial cohort of 38 patients, 16 patients affected by non-healing VLUs were randomly allocated to the experimental arm (5 men and 3 women) and control arm (5 men and 3 women). In the experimental arm, wounds were treated by debridement, centrifuged adipose tissue (CAT), advanced dressings and compression. No experimental treatment (CAT) was administered to the control arm. We investigated the functional and the immunophenotypical features of the harvested CAT-derived stem cells. The primary outcome measures were healing time and safety of the cell treatment. Secondary outcomes were pain evaluated by numeric rating scale (NRS), complete wound healing at 24 weeks by Margolis Index and wound-healing process expressed in square centimeters per week. The various immunophenotypic and functional characteristics of CAT-derived stem cells were then correlated with the clinical outcomes. Results
No major adverse events were recorded. The healing time was significantly faster by applying CAT, 17.5 ± 7.0 weeks versus 24.5 ± 4.9 weeks recorded in the control arm (P < 0.036). NRS dropped after the first week to 2.7 ± 2.0 in the experimental arm versus 6.6 ± 3.0 in the control group (P < 0.01). The rate of healing at the 24th week was not significantly different between arms. Interestingly, we found a strong reverse correlation between the percent of CD34+/CD45– non-hematopoietic cells, respectively, with the healing time (r?=?–0.894, P < 0.041) and NRS (r?=?–0.934, P < 0.020).Conclusions
CAT is safe and may accelerate healing time in VLUs as well as reduce wound pain. The percentage of CD34+/CD45– cells in stromal vascular fraction (SVF) seems to be a predictive biomarker of successful CAT treatment in these patients. 相似文献8.
For captive-reared cranes, pelvic limb abnormalities in chicks have been identified as significant morbidity/mortality factors. An important component of the diagnosis of limb abnormalities is the understanding of the normal limb. This study was undertaken to describe the normal, radiographic development of the femur, tibiotarsus, tarsometatarsus, and fibula of the whooping crane (Grus americana), Florida sandhill crane (Grus canadensis pratensis), and Siberian crane (Grus leucogeranus). Crane chicks were anesthetized and their pelvic limb bone development evaluated radiographically on a weekly to bimonthly basis from one to fourteen weeks of age. Body weight, bone length, diaphyseal width, and physeal development and closure were evaluated. Based on the radiographic analysis, the gross development of the long bones of the pelvic limb of whooping, Florida sandhill, and Siberian cranes was found to be similar among the three species, and not dissimilar from other avian species which have been studied. Repeated handling, anesthesia, and radiographic exposure did not produce any behavioral, developmental, or physical abnormalities in the studied cranes when compared to cranes of the same species raised using the same methods. This is the first work to describe pelvic limb bone development in these species. © 1996 Wiley-Liss, Inc. 相似文献

Inherited resistance to activated protein C has been recognized as a major risk factor for thrombosis. The factor V Leiden mutation, which is detectable by molecular DNA techniques, is responsible for 95% of cases of activated protein C resistance. In our study one patient with venous leg ulcers from a family with a history of thrombosis showed factor V Leiden mutation. Genotypic analysis demonstrated that the patient was homozygous for factor V Leiden. All family members of the index subject showed the same abnormalities. Two were homozygous and 3 were heterozygous for factor V Leiden mutation. The polymerase chain reaction was used to amplify exon 10 of the factor V gene, followed by enzymatic digestion with MnlI for mutation detection. Patients with a family history of thrombosis and factor V Leiden have an increased risk of venous leg ulcers. Screening for factor V Leiden may be indicated in patients with venous leg ulcers and their family members. 相似文献
